Enjoy alcohol sensibly

As the New Year is upon us, we wanted to post a friendly reminder not to drink or to use caution about drinking while you are soaking in your tub. Read on to find out why hot tubs and alcohol can be a risky combination.

Dehydration

• Alcohol dehydrates the body and so does sweating in a hot tub. Because there are two actions dehydrating you it may cause light-headedness, dizziness, nausea, or worse. Consider swapping your wine for a glass of water when you are in the hot tub.

Dizziness

• Drinking alcohol can cause dizziness, which makes it easier for you to stumble or fall—obviously not what you want to happen in or near a hot tub.

Sleeping or Unconsciousness

• The depressant effect of alcohol in combination with the high temperatures of a hot tub can cause you to fall asleep in the tub.

Body Temperature

• The heat in a hot tub expands your blood vessels and increases body temperature, as does drinking alcohol.

All About MAAX Spas

Pettis Pools & Patio Pool Park Is Open!

Pettis Pools is the only dealer in Rochester that has an outdoor pool display with both above ground and inground pools. You can see these real size pools in operation.

Here’s what you’ll find in the Pettis Pools and Patio Pool Park:

1. There are three above ground pools (18′ x 54″ deep, 24′ x 52″ deep and 27′ pool that is 54″ deep) All of them are actually filled and running so you can see how the skimmer works, how the filter is hooked up, and how it is to stand next to the variable pool heights.

2. Our 20′ x 34′ Fox inground pool features an in-pool bench, in-pool stair and 4 custom deck jets. This pool is heated by an Aqua Cal Heat pump and sanitized by an AutoPilot Salt Generator so you can see how these are hooked up as well as how they work. 4. Semi-Inground Pool on display in the Pettis Pool Park is a must-see! This pool is available in round and oval sizes and has a 52″ wall. The amazing thing is that you can put this pool entirely in the ground, entirely above ground or as shown with our 21′ round display pool, partially inground and partially above ground. Over the years, customers have expressed a desire to have their above ground pool partly in the ground and now it’s possible because of the structural integrity of the Ultimate Pool, a Fox pool product! This year, Fox also made it possible to have this pool installed with a walk-in stair. Now you’re talking about a pool that’s looking more and more like a full-fledged inground pool.

We understand that the purchase of a hot tub requires careful thought, so we have put together a short list of questions to help you through the process.

A Softub can be easily moved, indoors or out.

1. Size of Tub and Placement? There are many points to consider when answering this question, keep these in mind:

• Are you going to be using it inside or outside?
• If your answer is inside: Is there enough room to move the hot tub to where you want it? And is there enough ventilation in your room?
• If your answer is outside: What is the access like where you want to put it? Can you reach it easily?
• How many people will really be using the tub, the majority of the time?

It’s best to buy a tub that will fit your regular, daily needs and not buy one for that once-a-year family picnic! We all tend to think big; but bigger may not be better. Hot tubbing tends to be a fairly intimate activity.

2. 120 volt vs. 220 volt? The answer to this question will impact your initial installation costs and your ongoing monthly costs.

220 volt questions:

• How much will it cost per month to operate the hot tub, on average?  Look for energy-efficient models.
• What is the cost to have 220 volt power run from my electrical junction box to the hot tub?
• What other charges will I be responsible for? Items like quick disconnects, grounding rods, GFCI breakers, and so on need to be figured in.
• Does the dealership do this or will I need to hire a licensed electrician? Does the dealer work with someone that they trust and recommend for this service?
• Do I have room on my electrical panel to add a minimum 50amp, 220v power outlet?

120 volt questions:

• How much will it cost per month to operate the hot tub, on average?
• Can I run the jets and the heater at the same time? Hot tubs that heat with a traditional heater element cannot run both the jets and the heater at the same time; there simply isn’t enough power! This can lead to significant cooling down of the hot tub water during use in cold weather conditions.
• Will I need a dedicated 20amp circuit—and how much will that cost—or do I already have one?
• Will I need to install a GFCI outlet or is it an inherent part of the tub?

3. What is the Length of Time the Manufacturer and Dealer Has Been in Business?

• Will the manufacturer and my dealer be around if I require any warranty work and how is that handled?
• Do they have a service center or is the work performed by a third party?
• Are they ‘IN’ the hot tub business, or is it just a sideline for them?

4. Should I buy from a Specialty Retailer or a Big Box Store?

• “Big box” retailers typically carry off-brands or stripped down versions of larger manufacturers. Choices are limited and the wait for service can be very long. Also, they are more likely to offer no service. The lower price paid initially could cost you far more down the road.
• Most Hot Tub owners who’ve purchased from a reputable dealer say that their spa purchase was one of the best investments they’ve ever made. Choose a credible, qualified, expert hot tub retailer to ensure you get the right hot tub for your needs. After all, you want to experience relaxation and comfort in your own backyard…not stress.

5. How important is Portability?

• Hot tubs are often advertised as being portable when, in all practicality, that’s just not true. Most hard tubs weigh between 400-900 pounds, making them difficult to move yourself. They are also hard to relocate when you move: think about your lifestyle and if something more permanent fits into it.
• If you are like most people, you will find that over time you’ll want to change up the look of your backyard or deck. A portable model may be a good choice, especially if you want to use it inside during the winter and outside during the summer.

6.  What features do I want?

• If you decide something more permanent is the right fit, then you will want to consider what features are important to you.  Our hot tubs offer a myriad of choices like strategically placed specialty jets, physician designed seating for ultimate comfort, LED lighting and built-in stereos.  All our hot tubs also offer sanitization systems that are designed to minimize the amount of chemicals you need for greater ease of maintenance and bather enjoyment.
• Take a Test Soak! There’s no better way to decide if a particular model is right for you than to sit in it! We offer after-hours test soaks so you can try it out before you buy.

We hope these questions will help you decide which company and model best suits your needs. At Pettis, we have been selling Hot Tubs since 1982; when they were just a “fad” those strange people in California were into! Our longevity means we really know the hot tub business. With models and price ranges that suit any budget, we hope to have the opportunity to help you get “into hot water.”

• No retail. Buying things from eBay, craigslist, thrift stores and yard sales saves 75% or more off retail prices.
• No impulse buys. Staying out of retail stores and practicing the 24 hour rule with my kids (day 140) works great!
• Smart shopping. For the groceries and toiletries stuff I have to buy, I price shop shop in stores where I know the prices are generally lower.  I try and buy some generic brands and buy things with minimal packaging.
• Usage. Will I really use this?  Is it something I’ve wanted for a while or something that just popped into my head?  If I haven’t been looking at something for a while, I wait.  If I really want or need it, it will stay in my mind.
• Trading & sharing. I make trades with friends and share things like tools, yard equipment and things not used frequently.  This minimizes the amount of stuff I have, making cleaning and organizing much easier.
• Counterculture. We didn’t do Christmas like the rest of society.  No Christmas bills!  It was still a very good Christmas, just different than the rest of the USA.
• Look ahead. How long will this item last?  What’s the maintenance and upkeep cost?  Is it green?

Looking at all of this, my kids and I made a recent large item purchase.  It’s something we had in our old house and used quite a bit, all year long.  We’ve been wanting one for four years now, since we moved into this house.  The used market on the item has good availability, but difficult to find certain models.  Many are in working order, many are not.  Some require lots of extra money for set up, installation and transportation.  So what is it?  A hot tub. 

Actually, it’s a Softub spa.  Certainly, we did not need this, but after doing a lot of research on hot tubs, this was a great find.  And as opposed to all my friends who commented on Facebook that it looks like a birthing pool or a baptismal, it’s a not, it’s a real hot tub.  Check this out.

• $$$. I paid less than 20% of the original purchase price for the Softub 300+ by buying it on craigslist.
• It’s green. No, really, the color is green.  (we’ve nicknamed it the green machine)  Okay, the exterior color is green, which would not be my first choice, but what I really mean is that it’s environmentally green.  This tub, kept hot for a month and used once a day during that month, in our recent colder temperatures, will cost me approximately $10-$15 per month on my electric bill.  In doing my ‘homework’, I found some people with hot tubs that are spending $80-$175 per month.  Ouch!
• It’s portable. No, I didn’t say inflatable, I said portable.  The tub itself weighs only 75 pounds and is designed to ‘roll’ into a space.  It fits through standard door openings so you can put it in any place that’s water friendly.  The soft fabric on the outside is marine vinyl, similar to what they use on boats.
• No installation. Roll it, flip it, fill it, plug it, heat it, then get in.  It runs on a standard household plug outlet, no 220 addition needed.
• It has no heater. “What?!?” you say?  That’s what I said when I first read that info.  This is a great design, as it uses heat from the filtration motor to heat the tub.  What this means is less maintenance, less parts, less power usage, although it does take a little longer to heat up the tub.  That’s really only an issue on the initial set up.  We added hot water from the sink so we could use it the next day.  The cover is sealed and it’s well insulated so it holds the temperature nicely.
• What do others think? Besides that it looks like a birthing tub?  I’ve never seen one so I don’t know if it does or not.  I did some research on blogs and other forums to see what people say about these tubs.  There were very few bad comments.  As a matter of fact, the first bad comment I found is that a guy had one, loved it, but his HOA was giving him a hard time about having it on his condo patio.  (Don’t get me started on HOA’s)

Now we didn’t need this, although it’s great for my back, as it doesn’t bother the metal rods I have or my spine, which bruises on any hard surface.  This is a great thing for family time and friend time.  We paid cash for this with all of the money we saved on not buying lots of stuff at retail stores and by being diligent about saving money.  And no, I didn’t make my kids pay for any of it.  ;)

You can see they quickly left the trampoline to hit the tub.  I hope Tanya is wrong that Joe is looking for a way to jump from the trampoline into the hot tub…
