In build 49 QuoteWerks added a new feature for Canadian users.  Document level GST tax rate is now supported for all users who upgrade to build 49 and higher.  This feature was added because the Canadian government has started changing the GST tax rate; this will make it easier for users to update quotes with accurate taxes.

Users can run a SQL query to update all of their previous documents in QuoteWerks that had the older GST tax rate.    “UPDATE DocumentHeaders SET GSTTaxRate=0.05 WHERE LastModified < #01/01/2008#”, and for a MSSQL backend the SQL command would like similiar to “UPDATE DocumentHeaders SET GSTTaxRate=0.05 WHERE LastModified < ‘01/01/2008′”. After you run the SQL update query, run the Utilities|Rebuild CM Transport files to update all the DTF files with the new field and data.

The GSTTaxRate field is also available as a DataLink field.  This will allow QuoteWerks to pull in the tax from customers automatically when retrieving customer contact information.

New, in build 49 of QuoteWerks, is the ability to set default literature when creating a new Quote, Order, and/or Invoice.  Users can specify which literature should be included each time that document is emailed or printed.  This ensures users never forget to add Terms and Conditions, pricing considerations, payment options, etc when sending their documents to the customers.

Additionally, users can select multiple documents to be included or select just one.  Also, QuoteWerks can specify an entire folder’s contents to be included in the quote as well.

The default settings for the literature can be found in the Tools | Options menu under the documents tab.

Some days ago, some interested users downloading the newest version fo Chromium for Mac discovered a folder in the update section named Chrome OS and downloaded its content.  Google was nice enough to provide prepackaged .deb files.

Not surprisingly, this is Linux-only for the time-being, but that makes some sense since Chrome OS is Linux-based. Anyhow, there are already other folders dedicated to that (including a 64-bit variety), and the Chrome OS builds weigh in at 139 megabytes versus around 19 megabytes for Chromium.

It would seem to you like Chrome OS is open source, however it is not. The open source browser by Google is named Chromium. However, what you get after installation is something like this:

In the top-left, you have what appears to be the new logo. This is also only an assertion, since there is no larger image available of that tiny thumbnail. Clicking on it opens this Google Short Links window, which doesn’t really allow you to do anything unless you have a google.com email address, which I assume is restricted to Google employees only for the moment.

There’s also a new menu option in the drop-down menu found in the top bar. Its options are identical to those found in the standard options button below it, except for a few things. There are options to clear browsing data, import bookmarks and settings, and go into fullscreen mode. There is also a new menu option called “Compact Nav Bar”. Inside it you’ll find the “New Window” option as well as “Open tabs on left”, “Open tabs clobber”, and “Open tabs on right”.

The main reasons for Office satisfaction are that businesses are comfortable with it and Office is compatible with Microsoft’s ubiquitous Sharepoint enterprise collaboration software, as well as other business applications.

On the other hand, Web-based e-mail and productivity tools, though much less expensive than Office, require that IT managers retrain workers who are old hat with Microsoft Office. Also, storing company data on someone else’s servers in a cloud environment remains a sticking point with many businesses.

But with cloud computing becoming more prevalent, enterprises won’t resist Web-based apps forever. Microsoft knows this, and will include Web versions of Office 2010 apps when the software launches in the first half of next year.

Bing Is Holding Its Own

When Bing, Microsoft’s “decision engine,” launched back in June, nobody knew what to expect. Could Bing actually compete with Google search?

Well, Bing has not revolutionized the search engine world, but it has been surprisingly successful. Putting photos of exotic locations on its main page brought visual flair to search, and its categorized search results, hover preview feature and enhanced video search provided streamlined results in a way that made Google look both disorganized and boring.

Bing’s U.S. market share has increased to 9.9 percent, which is almost two percentage points higher than when it launched, according to October data from online market tracker comScore. Yet Bing has hardly taken any share from Google’s comfortable 65.4 percent. Bing’s share gains have come at the expense of Yahoo, not Google.

But Microsoft is committed to Bing growth, dedicating close to $100 million for marketing and advertising. Also, this month Microsoft unveiled new features in Bing.

The latest updates include Facebook previews, full-page weather reports, expanded hover preview showing a snapshot of the Web site you want to go to, and the integration of Wolfram Alpha, a computational technology that returns deeper search queries such as a person’s body mass index or how many grams of sugar are in a banana.

What’s next for Bing? You can expect Bing and Google to try to one-up each other with new search features in the coming months, and Bing will experience a market share jump as it gets rolled into Yahoo when the Microsoft-Yahoo search deal is finalized.

With Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft has finally abandoned the 32-bit world in server land in favor of a 64-bit only operating system. While this is a very good step in the right direction toward solving the 32-bit/64-bit selection dilemma, it can present some installation challenges.
I recently encountered this issue when our organization installed VMware vCenter Server on Windows Server 2008 R2. With older versions of Windows, there is a 32-bit option, so vCenter has no trouble installing; however, once things move in the 64-bit direction, there are two items that you’ll need to address before the vCenter installation will be successful:
The need for the .NET Framework 3.5.1.The need for a 32-bit Database Source Name (DSN)/ODBC connection pointing to the vCenter database.
I’ll outline tips that will help you with the installation process.

Important notes

Before we proceed, you should be aware of these important product and article notes:
Although VMware indicates that small organizations can safely run vCenter on a 32-bit OS, it recommends that administrators consider 64-bits for all new installations.If you’re installing vCenter on a virtual machine running under vSphere/ESX 4, you should know that support for Windows Server 2008 R2 is currently experimental. Even though everything will probably work just fine, VMware won’t provide support if you have problems.This article assumes that you have already followed VMware’s guidance as outlined in the documentation and created a database and database user for vCenter. For my purposes, I created a database named VCDB and a SQL Server account named vcenteruser.

.NET Framework 3.5.1

To install the .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows Server 2008 R2, follow these steps:
Open Server Manager.Select the Features navigation item.On the Feature Summary page, click Add Features.When you get to the Select Features page of the wizard, expand the .NET Framework 3.5.1 Features option.Select the .NET Framework 3.5.1 item. (Do not choose to install both the .NET Framework 3.5.1 and WCF Activation together — doing so will force the installation of IIS 7.5, which will interfere with vCenter’s Web services.) Figure A shows you the Select Features window.Click the Next button.On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click the Install button to complete the process.

32-bit DSN to the vCenter database

When you create a DSN on an out-of-the-box Windows Server 2008 R2 system, the DSN is created as a 64-bit object, whereas the vCenter installer will only be looking for 32-bit DSNs. In order to create a 32-bit DSN on your 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2 server, you need to download and install the SQL Server Native Client on your server and use the new client’s utilities to create the DSN. For this article, I’m using SQL Server 2005 because that is what we’re using in production at Westminster College.
The SQL Server Native Client is included as a part of the SQL Server 2005 Feature Pack. From the Feature Pack download page, download the X64 package under the SQL Server 2005 Native Client option. Although you’re installing the 64-bit package, this is only because you’re installing the tool to a 64-bit operating system; the package includes a method to create 32-bit DSNs. Once you download the package, install it.
Next, go to Start and, in the Search box, type odbcad32. Select the odbcad32 option under the Programs heading to run this utility.

This is a 32-bit version of the ODBC Data Source Administrator utility; in this utility, create a System DSN that points to your vCenter database. To do so, follow these steps:
Select the System DSN tab.Click the Add button.On the first page of the Create New Data Source wizard, choose SQL Native Client.When prompted, provide a name and description of the new System DSN and indicate on which SQL Server the vCenter database resides.For my example, I’ve used SQL Server authentication. On the authentication page, choose the authentication method most appropriate for your use. If you use SQL Server authentication, use the same login ID and password that you created as per the VMware documentation. This page is shown in Figure C.When prompted, test the data source to make sure it’s set up properly.

When you’re done, you will see the vCenter DSN appear in the ODBC Data Source Administrator.

Summary

With these two items in place, your vCenter installation should proceed without interruption. The true test will come when you get to the installation step that asks you to provide the 32-bit DSN that you want to use for the vCenter database. If you’ve set the DSN up properly that DSN will be available to you; if it’s not set up properly, make sure that you didn’t accidentally create a 64-bit DSN.

Looks like Microsoft’s new operating system isn’t exactly getting off on the right foot with early adopters.

A Microsoft support forum has been hit hard with reports of problems from people trying to upgrade to Windows 7. As one user complained:

“When attempting to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7 the upgrade attempt may fail with the message ‘This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it.’ However, the next reboot of the machine will launch the upgrade process again only to fail with the same message.”

That problem seems to be hitting users randomly across the board — it’s been reported by people who bought the new OS from Microsoft’s site, as well those who got their copy from a retail store and folks who downloaded the upgrade from Digital River, the Minneapolis-based company that distributes Microsoft’s $29.99 upgrade offer to college students.

A similar problem affected upgrades to Vista Service Pack 1 back in February 2008, and again a few months later with XP Service Pack 3.

The deja vu is bad news for Microsoft, especially after getting some much-needed positive press for Windows 7’s improvements over Vista.

Build 51 improves some existing integrations and also adds some new features for users.  The most notable features include:

• Support for QuickBooks 2010 (USA and Canadian versions)
• New enhanced Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 integration (including support for Multi-tenancy, quote entity support, and more)
• Improved Maximizer integration for Maximizer 10.0 and 10.5

In this release, the new QuoteWerks Communicator was introduced.  The QuoteWerks Communicator enables Aspire Technologies, Inc. to periodically send messages to QuoteWerks users informing them of build updates, new features available, and other pertinent information.  These messages are received and viewed from within the QuoteWerks application. These messages are designed to be sent infrequently so as to not inundate the customers with messages.  It also enables the users to reply directly to the messages that they receive.  They can send questions and suggestions about the product allowing for bi-directional communication for purposes of feedback and to gauge customer responses to new features.

Build 50 includes 12 new features highlighted by the compatibility with Windows 7 and a new PDF generator.

ORLANDO, FL November 17, 2009 — Aspire Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of sales quoting software solutions for the global small and mid-markets, announced today the latest build of QuoteWerks sales quoting software (Build 50) is now available for download and purchase.

Build 50 includes new features designed to enhance the user’s ability to create quotes quickly and accurately.  The most notable feature is the new PDF generator.  The new and improved PDF generator no longer requires that a printer driver be installed and alleviates the inconvenience and complexity of installing these drivers.  Organizations often set user restrictions which limit the ability for drivers or new software to be installed by non-administrators.  Although this is a helpful security setting, installing required drivers for software becomes increasingly difficult and user rights usually need to be modified to allow the install to continue.  Utilizing a PDF generator that does not install drivers not only eliminates this issue, but it also allows the CPU to operate without another process running too.

Additionally, the new PDF generator includes the ability to flag PDF’s as Read-only.  This option can also be enhanced to prevent the recipient of the file from copying text out of the PDF.  Organizations can use this feature to make it more difficult for customers or prospective customers to alter the quote.  Furthermore, users can now embed fonts into the PDF making the file even more tamper-resistant since only the characters embedded in the file are used which also reduces the size of the document.

Coupled with the above features, users can also activate the option to have the PDF generator automatically detect hyperlinks in the PDF file.  This option will underline and color the link blue and allow the hyperlink to be clicked.

By installing this new build, users will also be completely compatible with Windows 7 since the only previous issue involved the PDF generator which has been updated in build 50.

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we have added a brief post about allmyapps.com a useful website which allow you to easily install software on Ubuntu (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) and Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7).  After a simple registration you can choose the free software you prefere to install and in few clicks and some minutes you are ready to use your new programs. Allmyapps.com, automatically recognizes the OS you have installed on your PC. On allmyapps we found many useful softwares and every month more programs are submitted by readers and added to the website for the installation. For Windows we also positively tested another website ninite.com where we found many free softwares ready to be dowloaded and automatically installed.  Easy to use and useful!

QuoteWerks has just created a new community page specifically for ConnectWise users.  The new page includes many features tailored for users and some helpful videos as well.

The new page also officially announces the new integration between QuoteWerks and ConnectWise and when it will be released.  Moving forward, users will be able to use a QuoteWerks native integration to link to ConnectWise.  This will allow the link to be updated on a more consistent basis as well as allow QuoteWerks to troubleshoot the link directly instead of ConnectWise.  This link will be completely written and supported by QuoteWerks.

The link will have all the features currently in the ConnectWise link plus some new features not currently available.

The community page also contains many links to features, videos, and layouts that may be useful for companies in the IT industry.

Wenn man an einem Rechner sitzt und man muss unbedingt eine Datei entpacken, man hat aber gerade an diesem Rechner keine Administrationsrechte kann man auf WobZIP zurückgreifen.

Bei WobZIP handelt es sich um einen Onlineservice zum entpacken von Dateien, sogar Passwörter stellen kein Problem dar. Der Service basiert auf der Software 7zip, für (gelegentliche) Windowsuser ist vielleicht wichtig, dass die Datein mit einem Virenscanner gescannt werden. Folgende Features sind bis jetzt implementiert:

Maximale Dateigröße: 100 MB
Unterstützte Formate: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZHCHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB und NSIS
