How did the Story End????

I Went over to her house she cooked me dinner, put on a DVD and closed her on the couch. She asked me to stay the night and I said no, she has been emailing/smsing me ever since then.

Important things to remember is that I was just very chilled with her, even though there were stages where I made my Intensions known. As soon as I got to her house I kissed her… just to make her feel comfortable… the rest is history. Hope u get some value out of this

There.  I said it.  Every year, the same real estate agent sends me a tacky “junk up your refrigerator” calendar magnet.  Every year, I throw it away.  I’ve never even had a conversation with this person.  If she actually knew me, she would know that I am also an agent and sending me her calendar is a complete waste of time and money.  To top it off, I also get calendars from my doctor, a few title companies, some mortgage lenders and a financial advisor I’ve never met.  I don’t want them – they are of absolutely no use to me.

I haven’t used a paper calendar in years.  Most people I know use a calendar on their computer, smart phone, etc.  Send them a paper calender?  You may as well send them rabbit ears for their TV….totally useless.

If you MUST send something to your SOI for the holiday season, wolkia has a few tips and suggestions:

Seems like Disney’s claim that their popular Baby Einstein videos, are truly just entertainment, and not educational, as has been the companies claim for years vi the marketing campaign for the series.

The problem with that is that there is no credible evidence that DVDs can educate infants, and that the claim was simply a lie.

Some parents who are committed to exposing Disney’s fraud, with the assistance of the CCFC (Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood) , chose to bring a class-action lawsuit for “unfair and deceptive practices against the Mouse house and filed a complaint with the FTC about Baby Einstein’s marketing claims to expose their deception.

 Disney buckled, so in order to avoid a lawsuit , they are offering refunds on Baby Einstein DVDs purchased between June 5, 2004 and September 4, 2009.

Customers can receive a refund on the purchase price (up to $15.99) for up to four Baby Einstein DVDs per household.

Buyers can also exchange DVDs for a “Baby Einstein” book or music compact disc, or receive 25 percent off a “Little Einstein” product. The offer expires March 4.

After three decades of continued growth, the semiconductor industry is facing unprecedented challenges and paradigm shifts that can be expected over the next decade. With the increasing complexity of VLSI designs (10M+ gates), time-to-market pressures, movement to finer process geometry’s (sub-sub micron) and changes in fabrication and EDA tools, it is clear that semiconductor design and manufacturing as we know it cannot be the same well into the 21st century. Innovations in fabrication and paradigm shifts in design methodologies herald changes in the way semiconductors will be made in the future. The microelectronics industry is facing unprecedented challenges at all levels – semiconductor process technology, fabrication/manufacturing equipment, design methodology and EDA tools.

On the technology front ….
The current silicon technology (CMOS scaling), the engine that delivered higher density and performance at lower power and cost in the past, will encounter fundamental (physics) limiting factors and could be running out of steam below 50nm line width dimensions, with the main limitation being quantum mechanical tunneling through a few atomic layers of silicon dioxide, the miraculous material that lies at the heart of all VLSI technology. However that does not mean scaling will come to a screeching halt. Devices will be pushed further at the expense of process complexity and chip power. It will be expensive to push up the clock frequency near the scaling limit, hence massive parallelism may become the preferred alternative to increase processor(s) throughput.

Currently there is a great deal of effort going on to find new materials and device structures to overcome these limiting factors. Notable examples are: high-k gate dielectric, strained Si channel, SOI, and double-gate MOSFETs. While a breakthrough in any of these areas will extend the CMOS performance or the scaling limit, they cannot be regarded as a sustained source for continuing performance gains.

In the next decade though, two opposing forces at work, specialization and consolidation will drive the microelectronics industry. For mainstream applications, like microprocessor and DRAM, optimization of particular functions seems to be the interim approach. Example: for DRAM cells, low leakage MOSFETs with small footprints will thrive in 3-D types of structures to push cell area to the ultimate foursquare limit. Integration and high frequency capability of scaled CMOS devices enable new, system-on-a-chip applications. Yield and cost issues will be a constant challenge for SOCs. Eventually chip economics can only be justified by increased wafer size. Currently the industry has moved to 300mm (12”) wafers which provide >2X die area over 8” wafers. This movement also entails significant changes in semiconductor manufacturing equipment technologies.

While there are numerous new device concepts being explored today namely single electron transistors, resonant tunneling diodes, quantum dots, carbon nano-tubes, molecular electronics, just to name a few, currently none shows the promise to replace Silicon CMOS in the foreseeable future. Today’s VLSI technology based on Si, SiO2 and CMOS is the ultimate outcome of the survival of the fittest and will probably continue to live on for the next decade and beyond. Complete paradigm shifts in the form of phototransistors or molecular (DNA) based electronic circuits may be the way of life towards the end of the 21st century?

On the fabrication front ….
In a rapidly shrinking world (90nm today going to 50nm in the next decade), coming together demands new solutions. As the semiconductor industry advances from one technology node to the next, feature sizes continue to shrink and even shorter wavelengths are being employed. This trend is resulting in a number of problems that eventually affect manufacturing yields and hence cost. The traditional method of designing a chip or mask and then “throwing it over the wall” to manufacturing is fast becoming obsolete. With the newer generations of semiconductor technologies the number of mask layers and the finer lithography requirements are resulting in exponential increase in mask costs. Mask costs are in excess of $1M for the 0.11 micron CMOS technology today. Finer sub-sub micron geometry’s are going to result in prohibitive mask costs, which will affect the overall semiconductor business model going forward. Escalating mask and fabrication costs demand a tight partnership between customers and suppliers. By providing solutions that play an integral role in a customer’s success, suppliers assume a greater level of responsibility.

On the Chip design front ….
Increasing wafer sizes (300mm), finer process geometry’s (60nm) and I/O intensive SOC designs are threatening to commoditize the silicon transistor/gate (10M+ pad limited designs). Paradigm shifts in semiconductor design methodology have a tendency to gradually take hold like the migration from schematic capture to verilog/RTL based design in the early 80’s. Moore’s law continues to relentlessly drive potential transistor counts upward at a 60% CAGR. Current 0.11 micron semiconductor technology enables a density of ~5 million gates on a square centimeter of silicon. Average System-On-a-Chip designs today are heavily I/O driven thus resulting in pad limited die cavities in the order of 5 sq. cm, which would potentially imply a 25 million-gate design. It’s like building a 100 story skyscraper brick by brick! Maybe doable but not practical!

Some hard realities are setting in for the extreme sub-sub-micron design world (60nm) in the near future. As we learnt migration to finer geometry processes results in increased and intricate masks, hence making mask costs and fabrication NREs prohibitive. Multimillion gate designs at the finer geometries are making the SOC designs more interconnect centric thus requiring accurate modeling of the interconnect, power density, metal migration, capacitive & inductive coupling, thermal issues etc. Large teams are required to accomplish the verification and testing of these SOC designs thus resulting in under achievement in design productivity. Significant changes in chip design (EDA) tools have taken place and are continuing to make strides to accommodate the migration of silicon technologies.

Paradigm shifts in VLSI design have emerged every decade over the last 50 years. The next chip design paradigm should accomplish the goal of significantly simplifying and increasing the confidence of designing and verification of embedded systems-on-a-chip with a higher probability of success, in a short time to market.

Platform based embedded systems-on-a-chip are starting to take root for economic and practical reasons rather than conceptual and architectural reasons. Embedded Systems-On-a-Chip platforms are being created by compiling a set of programmable processors, which offer scalability and programmability. Additionally with the large size of SOC platforms and with the transistor becoming a commodity, inefficiencies at the gate level are no longer significant in the grand scheme of things. This amounts to replacing gate level functionality with a scalable multi-processing environment of deeply embedded computing engines with configurable datapaths, embedded memory stacks and innovative packet like transmission mechanisms to enable them to talk to each other and the outside world without presenting a bottleneck for handling wire speed processes.

While these hardware platforms will initially face a run for their money from programmable hardware with hard-coded blocks optimized for vertical markets, the phenomenal silicon densities achievable with the sub-sub micron technology, will result in a torturous path from acceptable behavioral RTL to a reliable physical design. This is forcing the paradigm shift to materialize into reality with reconfigurable embedded systems-on-a-chip hardware platforms with their configuration and I/O optimized to address a broad application focus. As embedded microcomputer cores become faster and smaller, more and more tasks can be accomplished, with software running on these hardware platforms instead of dedicated hardware. This is vindicated by the fact that SOCs constitute the majority of ASIC design starts today. There are a number of approaches that have been taken by different companies to address this paradigm shift, however it is the belief of many in the industry that while these efforts are admirable, they have barely scratched the surface of this new paradigm shift and there is a lot to come with the advent of the sub-sub micron silicon technology.

The key to the successful deployment of these embedded systems-on-a-chip platforms is going to be the availability of System level EDA tools for architecture exploration, algorithm verification and architectural optimization. System Design tools that generate the retargettable compilers, cycle accurate models, user-friendly development environment. Additionally libraries of software IP modules will allow the ‘chip’ designer of tomorrow to realize the desired functionality in software in a matter of months rather than years with complete freedom to implement product variations and functionality changes at anytime.

Venturing to make a bold prediction in the area of VLSI design, it is my belief and that of many in the semiconductor industry, that by the mid 21st century, if you want to avoid designing the wrong multi-billion transistor chip with an army for a design team, platform based design will become a necessity (and not an alternative) for implementing Embedded Systems-On-a-Chip. I believe hardware designers are going to be writing firmware/software in the name of chip/system design, instead of doing hardware design.

Growing semiconductor milieu in India ….
With most of the top semiconductor powerhouses opening up their India development center, coupled with increasing need for off shoring VLSI services, there has been an increasing demand for VLSI talent in India. While India has been a powerhouse for software, VLSI training as part of the education curriculum has been weak and hence there is an extreme shortage of moderately experienced engineers with exposure in the leading edge of the VLSI arena. This is further affected by the traditionally large cost of VLSI tools, especially for the backend.

Despite these hurdles, the Indian environment is making great strides in the VLSI arena. Most of the activity has been relegated to front-end VLSI RTL design and verification activity in the services arena. HCL and Wipro have a significant presence in the VLSI services arena. Amongst the large corporations like Cisco, Intel and TI where the tool costs are not an issue, VLSI activity has been extended to porting of existing designs to different foundries thus encompassing backend work as well and even development of some new designs. VLSI product firms like Broadcom, AMD, AMCC, Xilinix etc and EDA firms like Synopsys, Cadence and Mentor maintain significant presence with their India centers. Top universities like IITs and IISC are developing in-house programs and collaborative R&D centers with industry giants like Intel, IBM and Applied Materials. Also these initiatives are bound to ensure the emergence of India as a power in the VLSI arena in the 21st century.

There are a few semiconductor related product companies emerging from India with reasonable success in the world markets like NSys Design Systems, Poseidon Design Systems, MOS Chip, Xambala, etc. The potential successes here will create a momentum whereby we could see many more of such companies from India. On the silicon fabs front, there are potential discussions going on in the press to setup a fabrication facility in Hyderabad. The demanding requirements of setting up a fab both investment wise and infrastructure wise, raises a question of whether India will be able to compete with the likes of Taiwan and China.

Summing up ….
Its clear that no single company can, or will be able to, offer the complete set of best-in-class solutions to address all the complex technical challenges ahead. Instead, chipmakers need a combination of solutions from several sources, requiring innovative business models that encourage co-operation among suppliers even as they continue to compete with one another. The continued ability to design and manufacture chips that are faster, cheaper, and better from generation to generation requires the industry to move to the next level of creativity and leadership. Despite the challenges, the outsourcing model with the availability of qualified talent and cost arbitrage portends a bright future for India as a player in the VLSI arena in the 21st century.

Chacun son cheval de bataille, la légalisation, l’anarchie, antitout ou antirien, jme fou de tout, être peace, être violent, les rebelles se font entendre généralement !
Être rebelle n’est pas qu’un état d’esprit ou un état de cœur, derrière tout cela on a des choses à dire, des chose à montrer, on a besoin de s’exprimer ! Car avant, personne ne nous a laissé le faire !
Il faut que ça sorte et ça sort comme ça peut ! L’adolescence et l’attitude rebelle arrivent généralement en même temps, il faut se définir face à ses parents, se faire sa propre image de soi dire qui l’on est…
Groupe de musique , addict, mode vestimentaire , piercing, tatou, l’on dégage un truc qui dit moi je ne suis pas comme vous, je suis différent, en quelque sorte je répugne à vos principes, votre société, vos valeurs…
Mais être rebelle c’est aussi de la frime. On veut être accepté sans l’être ! En étant rebelle on adopte des codes, des principes, on s’inclut dans un groupe auquel on croit correspondre, on se sent bien dedans on se sent compris ! On met un point d’honneur dans l’unité de ce groupe et ces valeurs sont prises très au sérieux ! On a nos opinions on les respecte mais les autres on ne les respecte pas forcément, « pense comme moi ou tais toi » !

D’où sors tout ça ? De mon vécu, mes confrontations, le vécu des autres, leurs frustrations, leurs incompréhensions, je crois que se sont elles qui m’ont le plus motivé ! J’ai voulu comprendre, pour savoir écouter et aider.

Lorsque vous venez de subir une épreuve physiquement éprouvante – un déménagement, une semaine de stress au bureau, une séance pénible chez le dentiste, une grève de méto ou de train, un long trajet en voiture, un ascenseur en panne… – première priorité: videz-vous la tête et dorlotez-vous!

Now that the Arctic 2009 trip is behind me and I’ve had a week or so at home to process and consider the experience, there’s a few things that have occurred to me that I think I’d like to share.

The experience for me had several levels. On one level, there was simply the experience of being a learner. Having never traveled to the Arctic before, there was a lot for me to learn. I’ve read and watch photos and videos of the ecosystems and landscapes, but I’m not sure it prepared me for the reality of it all. One word the kept coming up in my mind was simply ‘big’. Everything was big. Ocean, cliffs, fiords, sky. All big. As a science teacher, I was fairly well versed in the academic view of the north, but the reality and boldness of it took me a little bit by surprise. I can see how people get attracted and get ‘pulled’ to the region.

Another level of learning and interest was watching the logistics of the journey unfold. As someone who had taken students on canoe trips, I know how difficult logistics can be. Students On Ice is a machine when it comes to dealing with the difficulties of an expedition like this, which are magnitudes higher than anything I had ever dealt with. It was quite a thing to watch develop, and I learned just how good they are at doing it, since for the most part, it was never obvious what the staff were dealing with, but I know that the behind the scenes experience was far different sometimes. Kudos to all of the SOI team!

The greatest impact for me was as an educator and watching the students develop as a group and as individuals. As someone who has worked and taught environmental education for a number of years, it truly was a joy to behold the process that the SOI experience led them through. The days were absolutely packed with activities and experiences that were all focused on the goals and outcomes of the journey, which is to awake and ignite the fires that are in all of the students. It didn’t matter what the passions were, although environment is obviously a common theme, each student was given opportunities and encouragement to develop skills, knowledge and abilities that they may have had before, or may not have known that they had.

It was sheer joy for me as a teacher to watch and help students as they talked, discussed, wrote, blogged, painted, sketched, played or simply watched the world around them. It firmed up my belief in experiential education, getting students outside and the purpose of education as a whole. It energized me to take these ideas forward and attempt changes in my own practice and to develop ways of supporting others.

Post trip, it’s been fun as the students have continued the conversations and have posted photos and videos on their shared Facebook group. I’ve posted my journal entries, and about 200 photos on Flickr for all to see. I’ve read most of the student journal entries on the Students On Ice site, as well as blog posts that my roommate Mike was making from the ship.

We know that we live in a super-connected world and it was good for a time to be in a ‘quiet’ zone and offline. It’s also great to watch the conversations and sharing continue between the students and the staff, as we all move forward and support each other in whatever activities we pursue now that we’ve returned from the Arctic. It’s fun to watch that too!
