Se apropie vacanţa de iarnă aşa că am început de ceva vreme să căutăm o locaţie pentru revelion. Ca să fim în trend am hotărât anul acesta să facem revelionul la low budget, aşa că am decis să rămânem în ţară. Maaare greşeală de gândire!

Am ales Straja, în ideea că nu e Valea Prahovei şi ar trebui să fie ceva mai ieftină şi mai puţin aglomerată. Da de unde! Nu ştiu cum sunt preţurile pe Valea Prahovei de revelion, dar la Straja sub 11 milioane de persoană pe 5 nopţi cu demi pensiune nu am găsit nimic.

Acum să vă spun ce am făcut anul trecut. Anul trecut am fost 7 zile, 4 persoane, exact în perioada revelionului, în Sölden, cu cazare în Längenfeld (un sătuc la 10-15 km distanţă), excursie ce ne-a dus la aproximativ 650 – 700 de euro de persoană. Asta în condiţiile în care aveam peste 100 de km de pârtie (ski pass-ul pe 5 zile a fost 200 de euro de persoană), peisaje splendide, civilizaţie, neaglomeraţie. În fiecare seara după ski ne relaxam la AquaDom, un spa imens cu o grămadă de piscine (cu apă rece, caldă, piscine afară, piscine înăuntru, cu apă sărată, sulfuroasă, mai adânci, mai puţin adânci), cu o grămadă de tipuri de saună şi încă alte multe locuri de relaxare. Am avut închiriat un apartament într-o cabană (cu o privelişte dimineaţa ce îţi tăia respiraţia, cu nişte proprietari prietenoşi şi foarte amabili), aşa că am avut propria bucătărie şi ne-am descurcat minunat.

Să revin deci la întrebare. De ce în condiţiile astea, când în străinătate beneficiezi de un confort de necomparat, când pârtiile de ski sunt mult mai lungi şi mai bine întreţinute decât în România, să alegi (mai puţin atunci când eşti constrâns de situaţie) să rămâi aici?

Like virtually all other Europeans I’ve met, Daniel thinks he’s god’s gift to driving. Racing up to Solden in a KTM X-Bow (a watered down Formula 1 racecar that’s only available in Europe), I’m so puckered I’m on the verge of tears. There are no lines on the road (nor guardrails), but if there were I’m sure they’d be double yellow. With only Daniel’s reflexes preventing us from a several thousand foot vehicular tomahawk to the valley, at times I just close my eyes.

We’re headed up to watch the kick off of the 2009/2010 World Cup season at Solden. If you’re looking for a recap of the races, you won’t find it here. Although I’m a racing fan, the matter’s been covered ad nauseam. Instead, I’ll focus on the second (debatably) most important aspect of this Austrian mainstay: the party.

We arrive at the glacier and it’s nothing short of pandemonium. Fueled by beer and schnapps, the crowd of thousands is approaching mob mentality, particularly when Austrians are on course. The flag waving, smoke bomb bearing, air horn blasting fans make every other skiing event I’ve witnessed seem like a Michele Bolton concert. It’s refreshing to see people with such unbridled passion for skiing.

After another heart-pounding ride back from the glacier, I was eager to see how the relatively small town of Solden was going to handle the tens of thousands of fans that were about to descend on it. Apparently this wasn’t Solden’s first rodeo. Between the live concerts, beer gardens, clubs, bars, and strip clubs (yes, plural) there was no shortage of entertainment options. The Europeans were combatively drinking- attacking their beer, schnapps, and red bull vodkas with the same enthusiasm that they spectated with. Needless to say I was a bit out gunned, although I like to think I held my own.

Surprisingly, throughout the evening I rarely met anyone that was only there for the party. Like an annoying Red Sox fan, the more they partied, the more they wanted to talk about their team. Who knew skiing could have such fans?

My advice: regardless of how big a fan of ski racing you are, should you ever have the opportunity to watch World Cup in a country that treats their ski racers like national heroes, I suggest you take it- if for no other reason than to be around a group of people that truly love skiing.

After the Ski World Cup has had it’s kick off last weekend our Ski Cross team uses the great condition here for some training. After a fall with not so much snow on the glaciers skiing is great now. I have the feeling we have our first really goog trainingdays this season and that is what we really need to be well prepared for a hard season. Great snow & sunshine that’s how we like it

Joska Bodenmais Hersteller der FIS Ski Weltcup Pokale – besser bekannt als die sogenannte „Kristallkugel“

Die Pokale für die Weltcup-Sieger kommen aus der JOSKA Glashütte in Bodenmais / Bayerischer Wald

Bodenmais Sie ist 46 Zentimeter hoch und zur Hälfte eine Kugel mit einem Durchmesser von 23 Zentimetern. Sie wiegt stolze zwölf Kilogramm und sie ist durch und durch feinstes Kristall-Glas, edel geschliffen und handgraviert. Die Rede ist von den begehrten FIS Ski-Weltcup-Pokalen, bei den Skisportlern auch kurz „Kristallkugel“ genannt. Bereits seit 1987 werden diese Pokale exklusiv im Design-Atelier von JOSKA Kristall in Bodenmais, Bayerischer Wald, entworfen und in der Glashütte produziert. „Insgesamt fertigen wir diesen Winter 70 Pokale als Unikate für diesen Weltcup“, erklärt Chefdesigner Josef Kagerbauer.
