If i were to choose a principle that summarizes what’s behind a good design, that would absolutely be KISS : as the wise once said nobody is really up to the challenge of being a programmer. Simplicity often means humbleness, which in turn shows that the author has already learned his lesson.
That said, complexity is unavoidable. Code itself is complexity: no lines of code is always the most elegant solution but, zen value put aside, it accomplishes little. We have to deal with some amount of complexity no matter what, so i think it is better to know who your enemy is than to bury your head in the sand ( even if that’s really agile ).
Let’s take a look at the following snippet :

Now the car must be modified: it shouldn’t be able to move if the engine is not ignited. What should we do to implement this change in behavior?
Horizontal complexity

An if in the right place and voilà, the job is done. It’s the kind of change that TDD (and, by proxy, YAGNI) often brings to: the simplest thing that can possibly work, which is also very often the best thing you can do. It’s horizontal because it doesn’t add layers to your design: an atomic change is most likely to involve just one method or, at most, one class. It’s almost harmless when taken in small quantities but, when misused, can turn really, really bad.
I believe that the real problem about ifs (and conditional statements as a whole) is that they’re too easy. Providing such an easy way to fork the world in two at the language level is like putting RPGs for sale at the grocery store – no matter what’s your level of trust in people’s reasoning, somebody’s gonna get hurt… heck, there’s a whole movement out there trying to put them down.
Vertical complexity

Two new classes and constructor logic: that’s the price you pay so you don’t have to put one of that nasty ifs into your pristine method. It also hides some of the code away from sight: looking at the method only is no longer sufficient to understand its behavior. It’s vertical because the change in your code will be likely to be small in each single part but distributed in various layers.
If you write one if too much you ‘re shooting yourself in the foot; if you do this the wrong way you ‘re blowing your whole leg off.
Overengineering is cheap and often mistaken as quality. The damage done, which often presents itself in the form of Yet Another Crappy Framework destined for internal use, is massive if measures are not taken early so i think it’s a really good idea to stop coding if you don’t know what you’re doing, like when:

• You just finished reading a certain book which was totally sweet and you can’t wait to see memento in action. On the invoices module.
• You had a genius idea and you absolutely must put it in your code so everybody knows how freakin’ smart you are.
• You start to wonder how cool would that be to have all that nasty business logic in a XML file so the customer can edit it himself

In the end…
Which one is better? That depends on you and on the situation: if the code you’re writing will be not be seen by human eyes after it is deployed then i think design and quality are not that important. If you know from the start your code will be mantained (which is pretty much always) it might be a good idea to add some structure (just some) even if the task to accomplish is simple. But if you have no clue please be a good boy, stop coding that CommonMethods class and ask for guidance

So last night I finally cleared Metal Gear Solid 2; Sons of Liberty and let me just say that it by far is one of the best games I have ever played.
The perfect gameplay,characters, environment, stpryline, twists and depth of detail is so amazing…absolutely breathtaking.
Plus it was really fun playing as Raiden, I really got a strong connection with him and I could actually see myself in him in some ways, plus he looks totally badass!

Today I started playing Metal Gear Solid 3, an though I havnt come all that far at all, it clearly shows a great leap in the gametechnology, both in enemy AI, gameplay and design, so I know I am in for a real challenge.

I really love the intro musicvideo for the game; it gives a real spy feeling a la James Bond, doesnt it?

Now Im gonna continue playing…

Just like the the movie Hitch, there is a real life guy; his name is Jeremy Soul of Lovesystems, who has an interesting way of interacting and picking up women mainly in daytime environments.

I accidently misstook Jeremy Soul for Jeremy Soule; the famous game composer, for example to such games such as Elder Scrolls 4:Oblivion.
Ah, Oblivion…
One of my all time favorite games…it is so incredible, probably the most perfect Medieval RPG there is to date; though with a few flaws, it makes up in atmos, design, depth, gameplay and ofcourse the wonderful music.

The theme just screams ‘FUCKING BADASS GAME‘

I cant wait until Elderscrolls 5 is released next year of 2010…it is going to be epic…I am gonna pee my pants.
But until then, I will be able to satisfy my gaming needs with Metal Gear, and ofcourse to quenc my RPG thirst; Dragon Age!

But then again…there are so much more things to life that can stimulate the senses ^^

In 1921 un inginer german, Max Braun punea bazele unui mic atelier de produse electronice in Frankfurt pe Main. Cum perioada respectiva a cunoscut o explozie a radioului, specializarea atelierului era in componente pentru aparate radio. Aproape 30 de ani mai tarziu, in 1950, un medic stomatolog din cealalta parte a lumii crea prima periuta de dinti sub marca Oral-B. Modelul creat se numea Oral-B 60 dupa numarul firelor de nylon incluse.

Afacerea medicului Robert Hutson din California s-a extins rapid, de la afacere de familie, derulata in casa si portbagajul masinii cu care ducea periutele la posta pentru a le expedia clientilor, la un business solid care pana la sfarsitul anilor 70 exporta produsele in Europa, America Latina si Asia. Mai mult, periutele Oral-B au fost primele care au ajuns pe luna odata cu misiunea Apollo 11.

Intre timp, Braun crease un prototip de periuta de dinti electrica, numita “Mayadent” (1963), care simula miscarile unei periute normale. Produsul a fost initial unul de nisa, avand o raspandire redusa in primii ani. Orizontul s-a schimbat in 1967 cand Gillette a cumparat Braun care ajunsese deja unul dintre producatorii de top de aparatura electrocasnica mica. Din acest moment Braun a beneficiat de motorul de marketing al Gillette care a promovat si acest tip de produs. Insa abia in 1978 nisa a fost dezvoltata suficient incat produsul sa ajunga la productie de masa.

In 1984 Gillette a cumparat si Oral-B punandu-si serios amprenta pe acest segment de produse prin investitii masive in tehnologie si marketing. Acesta din urma a propulsat Oral-B in topul vanzarilor din Statele Unite si nu numai lansand prima periuta pentru copii sub licenta Star Wars in 1984. In acelasi an Braun, divizie separata a Gillette creeaza prima periuta electrica cu miscari pe 3 axe.

Ceea ce era de asteptat s-a intamplat in 1987 cand a fost lansata prima periuta in colaborare Braun si Oral-B, marcand un nou inceput de business. De aici marketingul si-a spus cuvantul ducand plasand Oral-B ca sub-brand al Braun si cucerind efectiv lumea cu produsele lor. Din 2001, capetele periutelor de dinti ii au pe Mickey Mouse, Winnie-the-Pooh si pe Buzz Lightyear prin semnarea unui nou acord cu Disney. Restul e business modern.

Astazi vorbim despre cei mari care sunt in top, aproape de neatins, care au o reputatie solida si piete de desfacere mature, adica venituri plafonate. Ce este de facut? Caci actionarii vor mai multi bani. Raspunsul este extindere. Iar variantele sunt doua: pe verticala sau pe orizontala.

In primul caz se cumpara ori furnizorul, ori distribuitorul. Asa incat banii care ar fi ramas partenerului din aval sau din amonte ca profit sa apara acum in conturile companiei care cumpara. Practic elimina un intermediar prin inghitirea lui.

In al doilea caz extinderea se face prin patrunderea in zone geografice noi sau in alte industrii, de regula complementare. Cruciala pentru succesul afacerii in noua zona sau industrie este reputatia firmei pentru ca odata ce cumparatorii au incredere in companie si produsele ei, dezvoltarea devine mai facila.

Un astfel de exemplu este Dell care tocmai a achizitionat Perot Systems, firma care in Romania este cunoscuta mai mult datorita car-kit-urilor sale. Perot este insa in multe tari un furnizor general acceptat in industria medicala si in zonele guvernamentale iar trecerea lui in portofoliul Dell da acestuia din urma o bula mare de oxigen in ceea ce priveste vanzarile catre sectorul public unde vanzarile de echipamente IT ale lui Dell sunt aproape blocate. La randul lor produsele Perot vor beneficia de reputatia Dell si probabil vor cunoaste o crestere a cotei de piata iar in final banii, profitul si market-share-ul raman la Dell.

Nothing but a snotnosed, spoiled, little fjortis writing about her ’successful’ life, she contributes nothing of interest or value to anyone who reads her blog; apart from the satisfaction of equally brainless and putrid fjortisar…
When she came to our school, she was litterally reaking with vile and sickening perfume that could be smellt a mile away; I didnt fret to express myself saying out loudly that “It stinks of filthy old whore here!” , and her very presense gave an awful tingle coursing thru ones body.
Attention whore, to make it simple…and what also is sad are her ‘friends’ that seem to love bascing in her fame and fortune, if she wasnt anything, they wouldnt be either.

Anyways, having that said…
Im going to play some MGS now, really wish I had all games though.
A Gamecube for Twin Snakes and a PS3 for Guns of the Patriots.
I think in the coming year I will most def get these, but for the PS3 we´ll have to get a full HD tv or it wont be worth a penny.
The new line of LED Tvs are very attractive right now, maybe one of those?

Smart Board Activity – Using a Venn Diagram to classify the states of matter and the changing phases.  The purpose of this activity was to visually represent how the states of matter and the phase changes are related to each other.

I pulled up the Venn diagram onto the Smart Board screen with the list of words and phrases listed on the right side.  This Venn diagram has circles/categories for solid, liquid, and gas. I reminded the students that wherever the circles overlap, it is something that both categories had to have in common, or it was a true statement for both. Where all 3 circles overlap, it is something that all 3 categories must have in common.

I divided the class into small groups.  I explained that each group would have a turn at the Smart Board, sending one person at a time as their representative. In their small groups, the students discussed amongst themselves what words or phrases they would like to place into the Venn diagram. They also had to decide who would go first, and so forth. I set this activity up to be a friendly competition to see which group can get the most items placed into the Venn diagram correctly.

Using the tri-fold brochure for their note taking, they took notes in blue or red colored pencil. They used the blue colored pencil for the phrases that were in blue and related to the properties for each state of matter,  red for the words that were in red and referred to each of the phase changes.  They only wrote down the answers if they were placed correctly into the Venn diagram, I didn’t want them working ahead.  This kept their focus on the board. If a student did place a word/phrase into the wrong spot, I moved it back to the list on the right.  The next team could either correctly place the word/phrase into the diagram or choose a new word/phrase.

From start to finish, this activity took about 25 minutes. Overall, the activity went really well and the students were engaged and enjoyed the friendly competition.

For HW, students will review the terminology related to phase changes, as well as read about hot water freezing faster than cold water.

Today we talked about the phases of matter and I broke the lesson up into 4 different activities using a variety of strategies.

Part 1 – Brief introduction to set the stage

I told the students to place their hands on the table and close their eyes.  I then asked them “Is the table moving?” Variety of answers.  I told them that the table is made up of billions of atoms that are vibrating, we just can’t feel it.  Atoms do not stay still, I mentioned absolute zero and how scientists think that atoms would stop moving at this extremely cold temperature. Last I checked, we got really close but have not reached absolute zero yet.  

Keeping their eyes closed, I ask them if they feel the air molecules hitting them right now.  Gasses move very quickly and are bouncing around the room, hitting each other, bumping into the wall, off the ceiling, off the floor, kind of like a pinball machine.  I also ask them to take a deep breath – the air is filling up their lungs.  I also mention that they are breathing the same air that the ancient Greeks and Australopithecus did (they just studied early man in History class).  All the matter on Earth has always been here and is constantly recycled.  The oxygen you are breathing right now was once part of a water molecule, or part of an animal, etc… They think its cool and gross at the same time, of course!

Part 2: BrainPOP movie on States of Matter.

I show the movie and paused it when it zoomed into the glass of water and showed the water molecules.  I ask the kids, “What do you notice about how the atoms are arranged?” We discuss it and I have them draw the atoms, in a color of their choice,  into their notes in the liquids box. Continue the movie.

Paused the movie again when it zoomed into the gas atoms up close.  ”What do you notice about how these are arranged compared to the liquid?”  Using a different color, they draw the gas atoms into the gas box.  Continue the movie.

Paused again when it zoomed into the solid atoms up close. “What do you notice about how these are arranged compared to the liquid and gas?” They came up with great observations, such as many more atoms, close together, not a lot of empty space between each, and they were neater – arranged almost in a pattern. Using a third color, we drew in the atoms for the solid.  Played the rest of the movie.

Part 3 – Notes – Jigsaw/read aloud

I assigned a paragraph to each group and gave them about 3 minutes to complete their assigned section.  Once they were done, each person in group 1 read a sentence out loud to the rest of the class. Student 1 read the 1st sentence, student 2, the next, and the group continued until the whole paragraph was done.  I used 3-4 students per group for this activity.

The other groups/students listened and filled in their notes.  We then moved to group 2 for the second paragraph, and so forth.  This worked really well.  Some of the kids noticed that it was exactly the same as the movie, which it was, I made a transcript and cut out important words and placed them in the word bank.

Part 4 – Closure using the matrix

Using the BrainPOP graphic organizer, we reviewed the main concepts that we learned today, making sure to fill it in completely and correctly.

Homework: cut ‘n paste vocabulary to review terms we discussed today.
