Windows Media Player–Play music
Windows Mail–Send/Receive and organize e-mail
Windows Movie Maker– Create home movies
Windows Contacts– Organize Contacts
Calculator– Vista comes with Scientific and Standard, 7 comes with others to expand calculation possibilities
Windows Photo Gallery- import, organize, and edit pictures and videos.
Windows DVD Maker- Create DVDs
Windows Media Center- Allows to view pictures and videos, and listen to music. Also allows you to get live tv on your PC
Windows Meeting Space– Allows you to easily share documents with anyone anywhere.
Notepad and Word Pad– Assuming you only have basic word processing needs, these programs will be quite sufficient for all tasks. Windows 7 will also ship with Microsoft Office Starter which is comparable to Microsoft Works.
Microsoft Paint– Allows for picture editing and virtual “painting”
Many games– (Chess Titans, Freecell, Hearts, Inkball, Mahjong Titans, Minesweeper, Purple Place, Solitaire, and Spider Solitaire)
Internet Explorer– Allows you to surf the web, connect with friends, and expand the possibilities of your computer by downloading third party software (Which is less available for Mac.)

Making a home movie and creating a web site is part of a suite of applications known as iLife. Whether you know it or not, you’re paying for iLife, and if you don’t have it, it will cost a pretty penny (Approximately $200) to get this suite. All of these things can be done, however on Windows 7. Creating a website is actually part of Microsoft Office, however, there are thousands of third party applications available for PC which will allow you to do that absolutely free: something that’s a bit hard to come by on a Mac.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow so make sure to be thankful for all the things you like. The UD Alumni Relations Blog is thankful for Grotto’s cheese fries, Kate’s nachos, Deer Park bugers and pepto bismol. We’re thankful for all sorts of other things, many of which aren’t appropriate for a family blog like this one, but most of all, we’re thankful for the internet.

Without the internet we’d be crippled (both socially and physically) and, frankly, we are in awe of those who worked before the days of the world wide web.

How did people waste time at work before the internet?  Surely solitaire and minesweeper couldn’t occupy that many hours.  And what about the days before computers?  Did you play tic-tac-toe vs. yourself all day long?  Questions to be answered another day.

It’s been kind of a tough day already.  I haven’t heard any news about the cars I won on Sunday and Monday.  I’m not complaining as I have a car but I can’t help getting excited to see them.  It would also be nice to see all those British pounds promised me, especially after what happened yesterday.  I feel very embarassed to share this with you but I lost quite a bit of money last evening.  You see, The Mister plays solitaire on his computer to pass the time.  I see him doing this quite often and it seemed harmless.  I never asked him about it but yesterday I just pulled up the Solitaire game on my computer and began playing.  I don’t know how long I was at it before I realized that I had lost money playing.  Did you know about this?  I certainly didn’t it!  And now I’ve basically cleared out what little Christmas savings I have and it wasn’t even that much fun.

Another frustrating thing is that I can’t figure where to send the payment.  The Solitaire game just shows how much I owe them but not how to pay.  I help people with programs for a living so this shouldn’t be all that complicated.  I’m sure that there is a help file somewhere explaining everything and it’s just a matter of sitting down and reading the thing.  I guess I learned my lesson here though.  There really is no such thing as a free lunch.  Or a free hand of cards!

I’m thinking of sending my passport information on to those lottery people.  Maybe they don’t want to send me all that British money until they know for sure that I’m going to spend it across the pond, right?  Seems logical to me.  I’ll give them another day before I do that though.  I’m busy enough with other stuff right now to worry about my big trip to England.  Besides this week is about Thanksgiving and not about black pudding.

I’ve been missing The Mister and my kitties while I’ve been in Bismarck.  This is the longest I’ve been away from The Mister so I warn you that it might get mushier before it gets… less mushy.  The good thing about The Mister being human, and all, is that I can call him and text him and make him send me emails.  The kitties don’t even know what an emoticon is.  The only comfort I have is that their hair is still on most of my clothing even after I washed it.  I could probably make another cat out of what I’ve got here.  My parents have a cat named Sybil.  She’s very talkative and lovely.  She’s been busy protecting my Dad from me.  She thinks I’m trying to take Mom’s place, I’m guessing.  She’s typically very friendly but this visit I keep checking to make sure I don’t leave my toes or fingers dangling out in the open.  I’d hate to find that I’d lost one to her mouth.  Maybe we’ll make up over some turkey later this week. 

Lastly, I didn’t make it to Target last night.  I’m worried to see what this has done to the economy.  I would have spent far less at Target than I did on Solitaire though.  Aromatherapy or not.  Oh, well.  Maybe I’ll go to Target tonight anyway and try not to think about how I’m not going to be able to buy everyone those Santa hats for their pets like I was hoping.  I’m trying to keep my chin up here in Bismarck but I’m approaching the area of humbug quite rapidly.

[UPDATE:  I went to open the Solitaire game again to look for somewhere to send a payment and my Score read $0!  I'm guessing that they had a system issue and I'm really not that bad of a Solitaire player, after all.  I'm not going to chance it again.  So maybe don't tell my family about the Santa hats?  Because we're back on like Donkey Kong!  Tacos for everyone!]

Yeah! Everyone should remember this… your PC had no games installed when you purchased it… so what do you do??? That’s right, boot up Solitaire, scroll through the funky decks (I preferred the Palm Trees one), and get addicted.

And of course, as captured gloriously here, the ending of hyperactive bouncing cards. Amazing scenes.

Did you know that our politicians born of unmarried parents, our illegitimate political children have managed to post a deficit of $176 Billion JUST IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2009?!?!?!?!?! WTF?!?!?

Connecticut lawmakers caught on Facebook and playing solitaire in $37 billion budget hearing

Associated Press photographer Jessica Hill captured the essence of the clumsiness of government yesterday in a now widely circulated photo. While Connecticut House Majority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr. spoke on the budget issues that are plaguing yet another state, members of the Hall of House are playing solitaire, browsing Facebook, and checking out World Series highlights (it has been a great series though).

It’s understandable that Connecticut’s “public servants” obviously have very little concern for the details of a $37 billion dollar budget battle; it’s not their money, after all. As long as the public trough is large enough and the right politically connected pockets are filled, the intricacies and details of a budget matter little when you have endless supply of funds (the Connecticut taxpayers).

Republican Tom Foley, who is running against Crook “Chris” Dodd (D-Wall Street) in Connecticut, took the time to pounce on the Democrats in Connecticut’s legislature.

“I was disheartened to see a Hartford Courant front page photo showing members of our Democratically-controlled legislature playing solitaire on their computers while debate was occurring on a new state budget that raises taxes and contains no net reduction in spending. This is not a time for the Democrats who control our legislature to be playing games with Connecticut’s future. Our elected officials need to put away their computer toys and help working people by lowering taxes and keeping government spending down.”

Lower taxes and cutting government spending? It may be too good to be true to have a politician say AND mean these words at the same time, but a Dodd-less Senate would be something to cheer for (though my heart is with the smart and funny libertarian Republican Peter Schiff for the Senate seat).

Lastly, we see once again the Internet is leaving the dinosaurs in the mainstream press behind. Though I’m no fan of conservative pundit Michelle Malkin, she posted this picture on her blog post this morning, and combined with the Drudge Report’s coverage, it spread all over the web.

In a time when the government spies on our emails, phone calls, and medical records, it’s nice to know that there is finally an outlet for us to finally be able to watch the watchmen.

I have another confession to make. I’m a horrible game player.  Oh, I’m good at drawing games (pencils and paper are my friends)  and fair at word games such as Pass Word. But when it comes to computer games, I’m lousy.

My sister Amy is a champ. Of course, she spends part of most days playing. I just play a few times a year.

But, still! She wins EVERY game of solitaire she starts. I can’t win one. She plays Freecell, I have no idea how it works. She even plays a game with multi-colored jewels. I don’t even know the name of it.

I can play Spider solitaire, but rarely win. And I play ONE color only. Amy plays two colors and kicks butt.  

And get this: Amy is the one who, 18+ years ago was in a horrible wreck and had “permanent brain damage.”

As if.

So last night I had a killer arm workout. I mean I felt sore all over. Then I went to help a friend with getting groceries. Luckily the soreness didn’t last long. Yay for a good protein. So far my arms weren’t killing me this morning. Well they were kinda in the middle of the night. Well my right arm more then my left. So tonight I’m going to take off and watch my comedy Wednesday. Tomorrow Chest workout. It really annoys me how the only thing that is looking decent on my upper body is my back and I can’t see that. I mean my forearms don’t even look any bigger….ah crap I forgot to do reverse curls. Anyway so yeah there’s that. Yesterday was a pretty good day sales wise. Seemed like it went by at a fair pace. I’m also doing better on my tip of the day now that I admitted that I’m in a dry spell. My friends helped me think of today’s. My boss helped me with tomorrow’s. I mean they didn’t tell me what the tip is, but kinda got me started thinking and using it as a back bone. Today will be a very busy day that’s for sure. Oh and that reminds me. New personal best for me. I’m getting better at solitaire. Yeah whenever I’m waiting for a consultation to be over I play solitaire. Time for squibies. So this song has been in my head since last night. I’m not sure if y’all remember this, but Nickelodeon use to do what they called Nick Saturday night which was 4 shows for teens. One of the shows they had was called Taina. Taina was about a girl who lived in New York (shocker) and is trying to be famous (can’t believe it) and goes to a special school that is said to create the best of the best. Anyway each episode had the star singing some song. It was funny because they introduced the show by saying you’ll be saying her name. Or saying what’s her name and showing a girl in New York. Anyway here is the opening. Very interesting huh? Today’s tip is there is more than one way to put on pants. There is also more than one way to wear pants. Like on your head.
