Does your child have a hard time telling? Do you find yourself discussing incidents that could have

Does your child have a hard time telling? Do you find yourself discussing incidents that could have been avoided if your child reported it? Does your child always seem to get caught defending themselves? Developing the habit of reporting something wrong is not always easy. Some children can do it with ease while others find it more challenging.

What Hinders Your Child From Reporting?

There are often different reasons why children fail to report incidents, but I consider the main ones to be

(1) Fear of not being cool;

(2) Fear of retaliation against the person being told on;

(3) Not wanting to be seen as a tattletale and

(4) Wanting to handle things themselves.

If your child or someone you know has ever been victimized by name calling, bullying, teasing or isolation, you may probably think that those circumstances would most definitely be reported by the victim. However, studies show that twice the amount of reported instances of abuse goes unreported and in some cases that number triples. The unreported situation becomes repressed. The repression stays until it can no longer be contained and extreme action is taken. We see this in acts of teen violence, suicide, promiscuity, drugs and alcohol abuse. We do not have to look very far to remember the Virginia Massacre, Columbine Shootings and many other school-related incidents that were found to be the result of repressed emotions. Sometimes the instances that cause these feelings are easily identifiable and other times it is not so evident.

Developing a Citizen-Watch Child

When children are unable to develop a reporting habit from an early stage, it translates or follows them throughout their life. It can carry over in areas where a child is being physically abused and is afraid to tell someone or later in adult life, it can hinder them from reporting incidents in the workplace and community. Many persons experiencing sexual harassment, verbal and physical abuse fail to report it for fear of retaliation. Developing what I term a “citizen-watch” child promotes the idea that when he/she sees someone in trouble, calling a policeman, fireman or another community authority becomes second nature. Efforts should be made to not only encourage the child to report the incident involving them but also if they see others in trouble as well. This grooming and development must begin at the elementary school level.

How to Develop a Citizen-Watch Child?

ERR

Education: Educate your child. Talk with your child every day about situations that happen and the way it was handled or could have been handled. Use role play to devise situations that could occur and devise possible strategies for solutions. Encourage your child to share things with you even if they are at fault. Stress the importance of an open and honest relationship as a means of protection. Role model: Children learn a lot through observation. Let your child see how you handle situations that need reporting.

Repetition: In the same way that it takes numerous exposures to a concept like learning a new language, music or sport before it becomes retained or a learned behavior, you must educate your child constantly. Drill these concepts every day for maximum learning and optimal practice.

Reward: As adults, when we receive a bonus at work, a promotion on the job, lunch from a friend and/or a gift from our spouses, we are becoming conditioned to continue working at that which brought us the reward. Similarly, when working with children, good behavior and adherence to rules and promises should too be rewarded. Some may call it bribery but rewarding your child when he/she practices this behavior reinforces the established belief system and also removes the “not so cool” hindrance of reporting.

His sample based productions, some of them released on local Solid Bump Records, will probably remind you of those early French Cassius, Stardust or Superfunk sounds..
It probably figures, when asked for a small bio his response came down to: ‘vinyl records! vinyls forever!’.. Here’s one of his latest, a Daft Punk remix that would do absolutely no harm to a late night afterparty.

sometimes i look at my other friends, peering at what they’ve been up to lately and often i feel a tang of jealousy. they’re doing things that i would have loved to do: partying hard while studying smart. i won’t deny that i don’t enjoy partying, i do. i’m not really a party girl but i really like having fun. i mean, i’m eighteen and young.

Womens Campaign is trying to do something about that…check them out at the link above.
A 33-year-old man, Abas Hussein Abdirahman, was stoned to death in the port town of Merka off the southern coast of Somalia this month. Mr. Abdirahman confessed to committing adultery in front of an Islamic court in early November. His former girlfriend’s life will be spared temporarily because she is pregnant, but will most likely be killed after she gives birth. Relatives will look after the child if she is put to death.

The bigger picture lies with the Islamist groups who run the majority of southern Somalia. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Mogadishu, President of Somalia, has asserted that the al-Shabab, the Islam group responsible for the stoning of Mr. Abdirahman, is ruining the image of Islam with their inhumane acts. Just this past year, Islamists have stoned three adulterers, two other men accused of spying, and a 13-year-old girl in the southern town of Kismayo for adultery. Human rights groups state the girl was raped, illustrating the severity of their controversial actions.

Furthermore, women are forced to wear heavy clothing to cover their bodies, which President Sharif states is supported by underlying economic issues, as the Islamic groups sell this kind of clothing and then forces people to buy it.

Ideally President Sharif would put the Islamic law of Sharia into practice, but it is considered far too lenient by al-Shabab. Somalia has not had a functioning national government in 18 years.

I don’t know how you could not love me now
I don’t know when I lay down on the ground
You will find the (way it) hurts to love
Never cared, and the world turned hearts to love
We will see, oh now, in a day or two
You will wait
See me go
I don’t care, where your head turned (I don’t know)
Overhead, to know the way I see

The last few years have been difficult and you can always guarantee most of your so called friends will disappear when the going gets tough.

However, news has recently filtered out of my big lottery win. And I mean big! And now they’re all back, feigning concern that my problems have all gone and, of course, all with a worthy cause that I need to support. I can’t hold grudges and begin to do my best to help people out but it’s just never ending!

Eventually, I’ve had enough and decide it’s time to get out and do something for me. I tell my ‘friends’ I am off to visit family in Canada for a few weeks then buy myself a one way ticket to Almeria in Spain.

I live it up for a month or so, enjoying my freedom, soaking up the sun and drinking the Sangria. The ex-pat community are very welcoming and I soon make new friends who do not seem the slightest bit interested in what they can get from me financially.
Very quickly I have decided this is where I want to stay and start to make enquiries to the authorities about the right path to follow.

I have contacted Procoal Villas and other companies and have been to look at what they have on offer. I decide to buy a villa with my own pool – what a luxury. My villa faces onto the sea with gardens of lush greenery and a gorgeous, cooling evening breeze. I have room for my family to come and stay and when I want to go overseas to see them, I can rent my property out to holiday makers.

As soon as I move into my villa, I know I have done the right thing. Life in Spain is something I should have looked into long ago. With its deliciously warm climate all my aches and pains have gone. I get to enjoy the Spanish cuisine and when I’m hankering for some good old fashioned British food, its also on hand.

Spanish fiestas are a regular occurrence and the atmosphere of one of these carnivals is way above anything the British can do alone. The effort and planning that goes into these things is something that everybody likes to get involved with.

The siestas are also something I enjoy about this life. Shorter than popular opinion, the siesta lasts about half an hour and is well worth having in the hottest part of the day, if only for the recommended chocolate eaten on wakening.

I have even found work helping out at the Spanish grand prix. I’m helping to sell and distribute official merchandise for Ferrari and McLaren. I even get to keep some! Some of my so-called friends back in the UK would consider this quite priceless in itself!

I have no intention of going back to my life in the wet and dreary UK. I’m going to spend the rest of my life soaking up the sun and downing the Sangria in my sunny villa in Spain.

Orlando: The Haven City for Tourists Did you ever sit down with your family to plan your next vacati

Orlando: The Haven City for Tourists

Did you ever sit down with your family to plan your next vacation and then realize that you just couldn’t find that special somewhere where the parents and the kids, and perhaps another relative or 2, could all find something interesting to do?

Additionally, maybe you’ve been to all the interesting places within your travel budget anyway? Well then you probably haven’t been to Orlando, Florida. Otherwise you’d realize that even Orlando ‘V-V’s’ (Vacation Veterans) can always find something to see and do in Orlando that they didn’t do the last time they were here, or even the time before that.

I’ve long wondered what it is about Orlando that draws so many people to this, the sixth largest city in Florida. Well, a city of less than 200,000 people that draws about 52,000,000 (yes, Million!) tourists a year must be doing something right.

It’s almost an understatement to say that the good people of the city want to give you the chance to see and do something new and fun (or even something old and fun, because many of the city’s attractions do bear repeated visits).

This attitude, and the countless opportunities for the fun-loving and health-loving and education-loving visitor, is one reason that Orlando is called ‘the amusement capital of the world’, as well as ‘the city beautiful’.
Step by step I’ll take you through a lot of the city’s tourist attractions (not the least of which are the fine accommodations for visitors, from hotel rooms to fully equipped apartments). In this article I’ll start with some of the more famous attractions, since these are what many people are initially interested in.

Not that you’re unfamiliar with Walt Disney World. We may safely label it as the world’s favorite children’s theme park and the #4 vacation spot in the world.

This grand creation has 4 different theme parks full of shows, rides and other attractions. As well it provides plenty of shopping and eating opportunities for those who may be ‘themed’ out for awhile.

The main park is Magic Kingdom, Disney’s first theme park. Second is Animal Kingdom Park, combining an animal experience with classic rides, attractions and shows. Epcot Park takes you into the future, cleverly combining fun and learning. The MGM Studios contains among many other things, a tower of terror which is pleasant looking from outside but may, once you’re inside, frighten your heart out.

Another famous tourist haven in Orlando is Universal Orlando Resort, which has five theme parks, including the Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios Florida, Wet ‘n Wild Water Park, Sea World, and Busch Gardens. Add to this the dining, nightlife and shopping venues and you may just find the ideal place for at least one full vacation. The resort also contains the Universal Studios where you can enjoy the ride while watching movies. If you have a budding Hollywood star in your brood they can learn how movies are made and the secrets behind some movie effects.

Within this resort each theme park stands alone.

Perhaps two of them at this resort are most famous One is The Islands of Adventure, which certainly live up to their name, with wild rides and roller coasters in this quite new park in Orlando.

There is also Sea World, a well known aquatic park, which offers breath-taking rides as well as animal shows where you can see smart animals doing their amazing stunts.

We are just scratching the surface of this amazing town. We’ll follow up with more on Orlando in future articles and I won’t be surprised if you write me sometime to say you’ve planned several vacations there for the near future

Today will be marked by many as a day of remembering a favorite musician and songwriter, George Harr

Today will be marked by many as a day of remembering a favorite musician and songwriter, George Harrison. He passed away on this day in 2001, quietly and out of the spotlight, just as he liked to live his life. Much has been written about him and his death, and more of his life was suddenly of interest as he passed on from here into the next realm.

He never seemed to care very much if people noticed, as least it appeared that way. He made his music, declared his love for God and made the search for Him very public. In the course of that journey George brought along a generation that would also search for meaning in their lives, for God and for answers. Many found what they needed, others doubtless did not. But George Harrison kept on slipping in bits about faith and a salvation that would see him through this life and into the next.

As a musician and songwriter I think he was underrated. As a Beatle he was certainly considered less talented, even less important by some. His emergence as a real force of creativity was, inexplicably, shocking to many. On Abbey Road, Something was lauded as a masterpiece and considered by many to be the best song on the album. The other “best” was also George’s: the very memorable Here Comes The Sun. Funny that it should have taken people by surprise. To those of us who were faithful George fans all of those years ago, it just made sense that he finally got what he deserved: top billing.

All of these years later, reflecting on the music and the man, it’s gratifying to me for him to have developed into a significant human being on the world scene. As a kid looking for a heart throb wrapped up as a pop star, George did it for me. He was handsome, played lead guitar and he just exhibited something the other three didn’t. I can’t tell you exactly what that was, but to me, a ten year old California girl, George was the most exotic of a very exotic bunch of Brits. The accent, the look and the sound of them was phenomenal…breathtaking. And George, oh my goodness! He had it all as far as I was concerned. Who could have predicted that he would grow up in those years and become a spiritual seeker, humanitarian and philanthropist, all the while remaining a type of hippie for the masses.

George was unique…ubiquitous…elusive. While he tried to live a private life, he kept depositing bits of life into us. His spiritual journey made his music real and relevant to those who shared his quest for God. The very thing that irritated and bored Rolling Stone was, and is today, a gateway into something beyond rock and roll. There’s life in the words and music of George Harrison, regardless of your belief system, it all still leads to God from someone who wants desperately to know Him. George’s earnest yearnings for the spiritual engendered something tangible for those who heard the same invitation to follow a higher path.

His early zeal was eventually mellowed as he walked it out and made the mistakes we all make (well, maybe his were different, in a pop star sort of way). He wasn’t any different from the evangelicals of any faith, the new converts looking for the lost, driving people away in hoardes. It’s all part of the journey, really. We’ve all done it in our glee and enthusiasm for the “truth”. God bless us all.

I love George’s music. I love his guitar playing and the voice of his instrument, the sighs and cries that make his playing great. I’ve always thought he took up slide because that technique offered a real sense of emotion to his playing, something that went beyond just rock guitar gymnastics. What he left out in the way of glam bam playing, he more than made up for in sensitive and beautiful passages of guitar work. The ultimate, final offering of Marwa Blues, for which he won a posthumus Grammy, is the definition of poignant and emotional musicianship. It’s a favorite of mine.

I hope more people will discover the music of George Harrison. I would hope for them that they would take the time to really let it sink in, listen to the words and remember how they came to be.

This is one songwriter that lets you look at him closely in the words he sings, and it’s a worthwhile trip with a man who helped change a generation…or two.

(1) Fear of not being cool;

(2) Fear of retaliation against the person being told on;

Family Guy has entertained us with their spoof on Star Wars: New Hope and now they are attacking the “Empire Strikes Back”. Take a look at the trailer “Something, Something Darkside”.
The official description for Something, Something, Something Dark Side goes something like this: “Holy ship! The Family Guy empire strikes back with another hilarious parody of your favorite sci-fi saga! May the laughs be with you as (Chris) Skywalker joins forces with (Peter) Solo and Princess (Lois) Leia to battle (Stewie) Vader and his Imperial minions. A host of new characters comes along for the wild ride, including Mort Goldman as Lando Calrissian, Chris’s boss Carl as Yoda, and the Giant Chicken as the nefarious Boba Fett. It’s an outrageous, out-of-this-world experience you’ll “saber” for light-years to come!”

Are You Tired Of Searching For Affordable Travel…

… Your Adventure it’s Just a Click Away!”

Don’t Settle for an Ordinary Vacation
Go for the Big E…(Extraordinary)

You work hard all year long, and look forward to your vacation. So why settle for ordinary, when you could do something different and create memories that really will last a lifetime?

Today there are so many more choices than just taking a regular cruise or guided tour. If you’re willing to think outside the box, and put a little effort into planning it, your vacation can be extraordinary.

First of all, think about your interests or passions. Is there something that you’ve always wanted to do?.. Like learn to paint, try skydiving, or scuba diving?

What about some place that you’ve always wanted to visit like Venice, Paris or Tahiti?

What do you love to do in your spare time…visit art galleries, read or go to flea markets?

If you’ve always wanted to be a painter, why not choose a destination that can allows you to paint nature? But instead of staying in a hotel, and making the rounds of the usual tourist attractions, check into renting a flat or participating in a housing exchange program. (You can find several reliable companies on the Internet.) On the money you’ll save on the hotel and restaurants, sign up for art classes at one of the cultural centers near where you’ll be staying. And instead of signing up for a guided tour, visit the tourist attractions with your paints and easel. Live the life of an artist for two weeks!

Interested in living dangerously? You can find several adventure programs that are created around the extreme sports you’re most interested in — such as skydiving, white water rafting or rock climbing — and they are available almost everywhere in the world — from Africa to Istanbul to the Arctic Circle.

Want to do more than lay around on a tropical beach and work on your tan? What about visiting another country and helping to build a home for a low-income family? Rebuilding a community after a natural disaster? Or working in programs of nature education in diferents cities? Many nonprofit organizations organize special trips for people who want to make a difference.

Or, if you’ve always wondered what Volunteers do or wanted to work on differents programs, why not give them a call, to see if you could spend your vacation as a working volunteer?

What about learning a foreign language? (Your local community college probably offers “immersion” vacations as a member of a language class. During your vacation, you stay as a guest in someone’s home, and have the opportunity to live like a native. You’ll become totally immersed in the country of your choice, having the chance to speak the language with your hosts, learn the best places to visit, and getting to eat home cooked meals.)

If you have an idea for the “perfect” vacation, or there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, but don’t know where to start to make it happen, you can call your local travel agent. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what she can help you arrange.

Whatever your interests, hobbies or passions, if you’ve got unfinished items on your “things to do before I die” list — why not figure out a way to start putting a checkmark in front of some of them, by incorporating your dreams into your next vacation? There is were the adventure begins.
