Wytwórnia Sonar Kollektiv nie działa na mnie jak magnes i już od jakiegoś czasu jawi mi się przede wszystkim jako Jazzanova + zespoły, które chcą mniej lub bardziej grać jak Jazzanova. Drugie skojarzenie, jakie przychodzi mi na myśl, to niezliczona ilość kompilacji autorstwa… Jazzanovy. W tym złośliwcy znaleźli mocny punkt do snucia narzekań, że berliński kolektyw zamiast wziąć się do roboty i zafundować nam następcę „In Between”, ugrzązł po kolana w stworzonych przez siebie składankach. A tymczasem wydane niedawno „Belle et Fou”, mimo że nie wybija się z konwencji Sonar Kollektiv, okazało się naprawdę ciekawym projektem.

Z założenia jest to ścieżka dźwiękowa do berlińskiego przedstawienia będącego efektem współpracy Hansa Peter Wodarza i Arthura Castro. Panowie z Jazzanovy nie ograniczyli się jednak do wyboru paru kompozycji sygnowanych logo ich wytwórni, ale także na potrzeby berlińskiej inscenizacji stworzyli nowe utwory. Obecność tych pierwszych nie jest rzecz jasna przypadkowa, piosenki Micatone, Outlines czy Forssa (mimo że już dosyć osłuchane) wkomponowują się w tą na pół jazzową, na pół soulową zmysłową całość.

Przejdźmy jednak do premierowej części materiału. Sami członkowie kolektywu zarzekają się, żeby do płyty nie podchodzić jak do czystej pod względem autorskim produkcji zespołu. Takie ostrzeżenie jest dosyć przydatne, ponieważ w dużej mierze od naszego nastawienia będzie zależał odbiór „Belle et Fou”. Już otwierająca soundtrack kompozycja daje pewien zarys całokształtu. Nie trzeba tu zbytniego rozeznania w klasykach czarnej muzyki, aby odczuć silne konotacje nowej propozycji Jazzanovy właśnie z tymi klimatami. Pomijając wplecione piosenki wspomnianych wyżej artystów, płyta brzmi bardzo klasycznie i stanowi chyba najwyraźniejszy zwrot ku soulowi lat 70-tych w całej dyskografii zespołu (siłą rzeczy od opisu odstaje „Glow And Glare”). Muzycy zdecydowanie postawili na klimat kosztem nowoczesnych rozwiązań i to sprawia, że materiał nie powala na kolana. Z drugiej jednak strony to coś więcej niż muzyka ilustracyjna. Momentami udało się berlińczykom poupychać pomiędzy tradycyjne, instrumentalne tematy muzyczne nieco nu-jazzowych smaczków. Pewnie nie zdecydowałbym się na napisanie paru słów na temat tego albumu, gdyby nie jedna kompozycja – „That Night” (kolaboracja z Clarą Hill), nagrana od tak po prostu w biurze Sonar Kollektiv. Stanowi ona chyba najlepszy przykład kunsztu Jazzanovy w budowaniu nastroju. Utwór w tej interpretacji brzmi jak niesamowity jazzowy standard, a melancholijny wokal pani Hill czyni tę kompozycję jedną z najbardziej romantycznych, jakie ostatnio słyszałem. Jeżeli nie zdążycie poświęcić uwagi całemu „Belle et Fou” lub nawet jeśli nudzą Was serwowane przez SK nujazzowe propozycje, to mimo wszystko gorąco polecam zwrócić uwagę na tę piosenkę. Nie obraziłbym się, gdyby część nowego materiału grupy była utrzymana w takiej stylistyce.

Po wysłuchaniu „Belle et Fou” chciałoby się powiedzieć: „Pogłoski o śmierci Sonar Kollektiv były mocno przesadzone”. Jest to 70 minut muzyki w starym dobrym stylu, czasem nudnej, czasem bardzo obiecującej, która stanowi świetne tło umilające niejeden wieczór.

Well, here we have a pop quiz from one of my personal faves.  Hailing from Berlin, Germany, today’s quiz is from the lead vocalist and songwriter, Sascha Gottschalk, of the band, Thief.  Their 2007 debut CD, Sunchild, on Sonar Kollectiv remains a high favorite and along with their new song on the Jazzanova CD, they’re working on new material for this year.  Before learning about the band Thief, I was a Sascha Gottschalk fan because every single he performed with label mate, Clara Hill, was worth hearing and owning.  Enjoy meeting Sascha!

Two Banks Of Four actually only consist of two people; producers Robert Gallagher a.k.a Early Zinger and Dilip Harris a.k.a Demus, one thing you can say about Two Banks of Four is that these are some old school cats, fo’sho’. Jazzin’ out of London, UK, Two Banks of Four capture the nu-jazz sound to a perfection, making it easy for groups like Four Tet and Herbert to remix their songs. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys’ samples blew up in the jazzy hip-hop scene. Beautiful backing vocals and flowin’ piano make their new LP, “Junkyard Gods”, definitely something to pick up. Take a walk with their basslines down to the record store and check ‘em out.

In der ersten Stunde stelle ich euch einige sehr schöne Platten vor, die Ende letzten Jahres erschienen sind. Einen Schwerpunkt bildet hierbei die 200ste veröffentlichung beim Sonar Kollektiv. Die Jubiläums-Compilation wurde von Jazzanova zusammengestellt und präsentiert die ganze Bandbreite dieses herausragenden Labels.
In der zweiten Stunde möchte ich euch eine bemerkenswerte Debut-CD von DJ Ironbelly vorstellen. Dubstep & Ragga, Party-Musik die Spaß macht.

Jazzanova “What Do You Want”, the German DJ sextet with usually brings electronic soul, jazz, and hip-hop music and remixes, went with a deep touch of 70’s  Philly soul on this latest project, Of All the Things, WITHOUT it sounding dated!  A feat well done, I say.  Of course, there’s good hip-hop and Brazilian influence on this project as well and most important, probably their best songwriting to date.

Adding with the above accolades are the vocals of Joe Dukie (also known as lead vocalist for the New Zealand outfit, Fat Freddy’s Drop)  and a line in the chorus that’s so true for me right now:

The world is changing / getting smaller everyday.

Neo-Space-Disco von Gerd Jansons “Computer Incarnations For World Peace II” Compilation, erschienen 2008 auf Sonar Kollektiv.

Die Geburtstags-Kompilation des Sonar Kollektivs ist wie ein schöner Abendspaziergang im Herbst, der idealerweise in einem Nicht-Techno-Club endet. Erstmal raus aus dem alltäglichen Stress auf ein anderes Level gelangen, dann genießen und später leicht beschwipst die nicht allzu späte Nacht ausklingen lassen. Mit Soulphiction, The Black Seeds, Thief, Two Banks of Four, Recloose und dem Sonar Kollektiv Orchester gelingt dies bestens. Wechselt sich doch der “Soundtrack” dazu zwischen Jazz, Funk, Soul, Reggea und Urban Beats ab und trifft damit genau meinen Geschmack.

Schon wieder Neuseeland, schon wieder Sonar Kollektiv. Offenbar haben sich die Berliner seit dem “Herrn der Ringe” in die Insel am anderen Ende der Welt verliebt. Da geht es ihnen wie Recloose, der ehemalige Carl Craig-Intimus ist der Liebe und des Landes wegen nach Neuseeland gezogen und hat dort sein bisher bestes Album “Perfect Timing” produziert, das ganz und gar im Funk schwelgt.
