Part one – Hard Rock Hell – Prestatyn

Imagine the pressure and the pain . . .  Our plucky high-rollin’ heroes are up in North Wales, Prestatyn to be exact, for the Hard Rock Hell III – for the gig of their lives.  They arrive early morning to find that the official 4WD T-shirt is proudly displayed in the Merch shop alongside shirts for New York  Dolls, Monster Magnet & W.A.S.P. and their concrete barrack-style ‘chalet’ is laden with gallons of booze . . .  it is rock n’ roll time and they are here to play a vast crowd on an immense stage at the biggest winterfest in the known universe. They are chosen ones and this is their moment.

On the official running order for the event the boys are shown on LAST on the Total Rock Radio big stage at 01:45am after ten more bands (on that stage) and after a heavy metal party that started the PREVIOUS AFTERNOON at 5pm.  So the stakes are high and the slots are tight….

During the day the boys wait patiently, gently floating on a sea of anticipation, excitement and nervous anticipation …. They don’t dare drink any of the moonshine in their Spartan chalet – or get involved in any fist fights or other harmful shenanigans because they need to preserve every inch of their energetic verve and spirit for their big moment yet to come.

Around Midnight the Staines’s favourite live band start to prepare religiously for their big show. They even miss seeing Monster Magnet and Sonata Arctica whilst they get ‘into the zone.’

Meanwhile the Total Rock Radio stage is being prepared for West Country southern-rock lads Tribal Law.  Soon enough these fun loving lads are bringing the burgeoning crowd to an effervescent climax with their zingy, zippy mix of twanging guitars and growling bass lines. It is all going so well that the Tribal Law lead guitarist (the Apache Koe Naiche) suggests to the lead vocalist and front-man Danny Adams that they do one more song.  The crowd is by now in a state of frenzy and is hollering for more. Danny doesn’t think so. “Stay around for the next band” he yells to the over excited crowd of rock fans “The next band is Four Wheel Drive and they are gonna blow your mind”.  The crowd erupts in cheers and applause.

Back stage the 4WD team are making their final adjustments to hair and instruments. A whole day of patient preparation and grooming is about to pay dividends.  The Tribal Law lead guitar kisses his turquoise feathers and says to the crowd and his band-mates  “Just one  more….”  Danny agrees, but with some reluctance. They start their final number, a blistering, searing bluesy finale. The crowd is going berserk.

On the final note, of the final chord, of that very final song I watch in horror as Danny, the Tribal Law lead singer suddenly and without any warning, keels over backwards onto the drum stage. He is a big lad and he goes down hard onto the cruel stage-floor. The crowd gasp.  The band chingles to a halt and band-mates Koe, Frazor Clubb and Jaymz Perry stare at the scene in disbelief. A stage manager runs over to Danny who is now laying stationary on the stage floor his head at a nasty angle against the fierce metal edge of the drum stage. I hear several members of the crowd saying “Oh God.”

“Get a medic, dial 999” shouts the stage manager to the security.  Danny is out cold and we fear the worse. He must have suffered severe concussion at a minimum – worse probably – possible life threatening injuries. Paramedics are called but they won’t take the risk of moving him… possible neck or spinal injuries. For a few agonising moments we think we have lost him.

He requires CPR and fast. This is becoming a nightmare.

The consequences of all this are that, by now, our West London Heroes 4WD are now on stage attempting to do a sound check whilst the paramedics are working on Danny. It looks grim.  Then the security decides to empty the arena.  Punters are moved slowly out.  And they are in a solemn mood.  Now all signs of fun and joy have been dashed. We wait in the big corridors outside the venue for about twenty minutes. By now Four Wheel Drive should be playing their hearts out to this big crowd.  Instead we are all waiting here in an eery silence. Another few minutes pass and a supervisor comes out to tell us the news.   The evening is over.  The party is a no-no. Four Wheel Drive are cancelled. The venue is closed. We are all told to go home.  “How is the boy who fell over?” Someone asks.  “I dunno”. Says the supervisor as he scurries off.  Shhhh…..iiiitt!

“The days of grays” – Studio album thứ sáu của Sonata Arctica đã ra mắt cách đây hai tháng trong sự mong mỏi đợi chờ suốt hai năm trời của Sonata’s fans kể từ  sau Unia – một album gây khá nhiều tranh cãi của power band xứ Phần này khi band thử nghiệm những yếu tố mới mang tính progressive nhiều hơn. Người ủng hộ thì chờ mong album mới xem sự thử nghiệm này liệu có đi xa hơn không, người phản đối thì xem rằng liệu SA có quay về “thời hoàng kim” hay không.

Cá nhân mình thì không hẳn là fan của SA vì với mình thì SA đôi khi hơi sến quá đà nhưng nhìn chung vẫn xếp vào list power band nghe được và cũng có tí may mắn là đã nghe hết các studio albums và EPs của tụi này. Album ra từ cuối tháng 9 nhưng mãi đến cuối tháng 10 mình mới down về để nghe, cũng định viết chút cảm nhận nhưng rồi lại bỏ đó. Nhưng chẳng là lâu rồi không nói chuyện với em Golden Darkness (fan của SA), tuần vừa rồi hai chị em buôn chuyện linh tinh với nhau và tình cờ chú chàng hỏi mình về album này thành ra là cũng muốn viết nốt cảm nhận về album này.

Nếu có thể đưa ra một câu nhận xét chung nhất về album này thì có thể nói bằng một câu ngắn gọn là: Một sự đi xuống đáng tiếc! Chính bản thân keyboardist của SA đã phát biểu rằng “Album này sẽ u tối hơn và ít phức tạp hơn so với Unia”, và quả đúng như vậy, SA đã cho ra một album thực sự “tối tăm” hơn (cách chọn tên album, tên track) nhưng lại “đơn giản” hơn. Nếu sự đơn giản chỉ dừng lại ở tư tưởng của album thì cũng không có gì đáng phải bàn cãi nhiều nhưng vấn đề là ở chỗ phần nhạc cũng “đơn điệu” đi khá nhiều. Nghe album này thấy thấy thiếu vắng những cú riff tốc độ, những đoạn solo ngất ngây hay nhịp bass đôi hừng hực đậm chất power Phần Lan như ở trong Winterheart’s guild hay Ecliptica mà thay vào đó là một tempo khá chậm rãi, đều đều và không thực sự ấn tượng ở quá nửa số track. Nhiều track khá vồ vập, intro và outro gây hụt hẫng nghiêm trọng, càng về nửa sau của album thì các track nghe càng “commercial” (The Dead skin, The truth is out there). Ngay cả track ballad “Breathing” thì trừ phần guitar solo nghe tàm tạm ra thì cũng chẳng có gì đặc sắc, như vậy chính cái thế mạnh của SA là những bản ballad sến tan nát cõi long thì đến album này cũng không còn đủ sức làm tan chảy tim người nghe nữa.

Về phần vocal thì bên cạnh Tony Kakko không có gì thay đổi lớn lắm và vẫn là điểm sáng của band thì album có sự thêm sự góp giọng của female vocal ở hai track “Deathaura” và “No dream can heal a broken heart” cũng gọi là có phần phong phú hơn, nghe hơi hơi giống Anetta Oslo trong Amaranth của NW ạ.

Tuy là có những điểm trừ như thế nhưng ở album này cũng có hai track không thể bỏ qua. “Flag in the ground” – track đã được SA tung ra làm single trước khi album chính thức ra mắt. Đây thực sự là một track tốt và chứa trong nó những gì mà ta thường thấy ở các album trước của SA – một thứ melodic power quyến rũ nhưng không kém phần mạnh mẽ. Nghe track này ta sẽ thấy lại SA của Winterheart’s guild. Một điều thú vị là track này gắn hẳn với một cuộc thi fan art contest để cho ra artwork của track, nhìn cũng khá được. Theo mình đánh giá thì track này có thể coi là hay nhất album.

Track thứ hai là “Deathaura” – track chủ đạo của cả album. Theo thông tin thì đáng ra ban đầu track này được lấy làm tên album nhưng một lần anh chàng Kakko chơi World of warcraft cùng bạn đã được đề xuất cái tên “The days of grays” và thế là sau khi được tất cả các thành viên đồng ý, đây chính thức trở thành tên của album mới này. Track này được chia thành 10 phần, có thể coi như tương ứng với 10 trường đoạn trong một câu chuyện về một đôi trai gái gặp phải trắc trở tình yêu nhưng cuối cùng thì vẫn về cõi vĩnh hằng với nhau. Nội dung đại khái là chàng trai trót yêu cô gái thuộc giới tà đạo và đến một ngày thì mối tình bị phát hiện và người dân muốn bắt và hành hình cô gái. Chàng trai trong câu chuyện phải trải qua những giây phút dằn văt, đau khổ giữa một bên là nghĩa vụ phải cùng dân làng xua đuổi “tà ma”, một bên là tình cảm với người mình yêu. Với nội dung như vậy, track này đưa ta đển đủ mọi cung bậc cảm xúc, lãng mạn có, hừng hực hận thù có, đau đớn tận cùng có thông qua sự đan xen của male vocal Tony Kakko, female vocal và dàn orchestral trên nền nhạc với tone nhạc tuy không biến hóa nhiều nhưng khá phù hợp. Thực sự nghe track này mà đọc cái plot của nó thì sẽ thấy hay hơn rất nhiều. (Cá nhân mình thì nghe thấy nó giống The Metal opera của Avantasia quá!)

Nhưng nói tổng thể thì những cái được đó có lẽ vẫn chưa đủ cứu vớt cả album và có lẽ những fan của SA sẽ lại tiếp tục tranh cãi nhau về album này nữa. Mình không highly recommend album này với ai chưa nghe SA nhưng với ai đã nghe (mà hình như ai chả nghe SA nhỉ) thì cũng nên nghe vì album này có thể là một dự báo về những thay đổi hơn nữa của SA trong tương lai.

Kết lại cái cảm bài cảm nhận này, mình xin dùng lại cái tiêu đề của post này: Có lẽ SA sẽ trải qua những ngày ảm đạm khi mà album mới này nhận được phản hồi tích cực thì ít mà thất vọng thì nhiều hơn.

Chấm điểm album: 6.5/10.

The offering for day two this year is Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. I’ve always found them to be a bit of a hit-and-miss band, but this is one of the better songs (of the ones I have).

Last year I sent Two Little Boys by Rolf Harris in answer to a request from my grandmother.

The year before that I sent Two Minds, One Soul by Sonata Arctica, a cover of a song by Vanishing Point.

Just watched Tomb Raider. Well, started our with Lady Snowblood but this proved too cultural for the brother and so we watched Tomb Raider. That film has so many epic moments and lines and effects that I cannot not enjoy it. We also came to the conclusion that I might establish a Buddhist cult and take over the world, starting with the Church of Norway. My brother was planning on taking the place of Lara Croft, noticing strange Buddhist inscriptions and images hidden in the classical Norwegian art relics, during his wedding ceremony. He will then interrupt the priest and say his catch phrase (in a Schwarzenegger manner, most hopefully,)before charging out of the church on the hunt for my cult’s headquarters, where I am with my trusted group of fanatics plotting how to brainwash the entire world into my beliefs, which are still under construction, and making the entire globe settle into peaceful meditation. (This would of course be a disaster, bringing the entire global economy and trade blah blah to a stop blah blah -but I’m too eluded/uninterested to see this. Which is why I’d be an awesome bad guy. Girl.)

Other than that, well. EE is due on Monday, though I might have gotten an extension. I better be almost complete by then, anyway. So I was planning  on spending all day doing EE. Logically. But then I woke up at 1,30- rather than 10 as planned, and then I got distracted for a couple of hours, rather than being disciplined, as planned, and so I didn’t get that much done. Which is a shame (my shame, I know) as I wanted to go to my pre school’s Christmas fair tomorrow. I might still go, after all, I have gotten quite a bit done. Whatever I end up doing, I’ll have an alarm on tomorrow morning. And I must be in bed before midnight, my sleeping pattern is way too messed up.

Speaking of plotting, reminded me that when I was asked what I wanted for my birthday by a friend, I answered -a treasure hunt. I actually think she might go through with it, she’s at least considered it. And that would be totally awesome. I will not, however get my hopes up too much (*dreams of running across Oslo looking for mysterious parchments and symbols engraved into our cultural treasures*), as I have done for the SA concert. Last night, I had the strangest dream which started out with me going to the concert, and it being totally epic; and ended with me hunting down (Zombie)Nazis in an awesome old mansion.

Back to reality, for a bit: I asked the brother to proofread what I’ve got so far, and he sort of admitted that it was a tedious read, which I already knew. Anyway, I let him read it at his own pace as long as he’d looked through it by tomorrow. And then he gave me a hug while impersonating Arnold Schwarzenegger  and told me to go off and start plotting.

2003. 6 Jahre höre ich diese Band schon. Sie hat meine Anfänge in Metal und Musik im Allgemeinen bestimmt. Tatsächlich hörte und höre ich nicht sonderlich viel Power Metal, zu gleich klingt alles. Vor allem die Sänger könnte ich nicht von einander unterschieden. Nicht so bei Sonata Arctica. Man erkennt Tony Kakko sofort.

Sie haben sich, seitdem ich sie zum ersten Mal wahrgenommen habe, durchaus verändert. Anfangs waren da noch diese extrem schnellen Lieder mit Gitarrenfrickelpassagen. Diese sind ziemlich genau zu “Reckoning Night” wieder verschwunden und alles verschob sich eher in die orchestrale, sinfonische Richtung. Das Album ist für mich auch immernoch das Schlechteste ihrer Diskografie. Die Band hat nicht nur mich beeinflusst, sondern auch meine Mutter. Es war nicht nur ein grober Einstieg in Metal im Allgemeinen, es ist zu ihrer Lieblingsband geworden. Mittlerweile erkenne ich ihr Auto schon allein daran, dass das Logo auf der Rückscheibe prangt.

Und nach all der Zeit kam also die “The Days Of Grays” heraus. Anfangs klang das für mich nicht wesentlich anders als all die anderen Alben, die nach “Winterhearts Guild” kamen. Die Scheibe wurde ein paar Wochen auf Eis gelegt, doch versuchte ich mich dann doch irgendwann dran. Und sie war gewachsen. Mit jedem Durchlauf wuchs sie mehr. Heute ist sie meine erste Wahl, wenn ich mich nicht für Musik entscheiden kann. Die Stärken liegen wie im Genre üblich vor allem bei den Refrains und diese sind in jedem Song eine Klasse für sich. Es macht für mich keinen Sinn die Songs durchzugehen, denn nur wenig sind sonderlich anders, als dass was man von Sonata Arctica erwarten würde. Ein wenig heraus sticht höchstens “Zeroes”, der für die Band eher ungewöhnlich strukturiert ist, sowie “Breathing”, der sich ziemlich gleichmäßig und baladesque gibt.  Auch finde ich persönlich den einleitenden Track “Deathaura” etwas lahm. Das ist aber auch der Einzige. Zur eigentlichen CD gibt es noch eine Bonus-CD mit einigen Lieder in einer rein orchestralen Variante. Die ist eher als eine nette Dreingabe zu sehen, zu kraftlos wirkt das ganze. Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass die CD irgendeine Geschichte erzählt oder zumindest Abrisse daraus. Es scheint irgendeinem Konzept zu folgen, rund um die namensgebenden “Grays”, aber ich komme nicht ganz dahinter was. Manchmal klingt es nach Werwölfen. Vielleicht kriege ich es auch mal heraus.

Meine persönlichen Favoriten, so schwierig die Wahl auch fällt, wären “The Last Amazing Grays”, “As If The World Wasn’t Ending” und “In The Dark”

Nicht vergessen: Oft hören!

Dienstag Abend war ich zusammen mit Mr.Coffee seit langem mal wieder bei einem Konzert. *freu*
Die coolen Finnen -> Sonata Arctica gaben sich die Ehre im Hirsch-Nürnberg, dazu zwei Vorbands, namens Delain und Winterborn.
Allgemein gesehn war es ein supper cooles Konzert, fand es richtig stark…hat gerockt.
Schade nur, dass es im Hirsch war, weil die Akustik dort fürn Popo ist, was sich auch schnell bemerkbar machte.
Denn die Bässe vom Schlagzeug waren so übelst eingestellt, dass diese BumBum-Vibrationen im Körper zu spüren waren, was sehr unangehm war.
Noch dazu war es fürchterlich laut…(und ich möchte jetzt nicht sowas wie “was für ein Weichei” oder dererlei Gschmarre hören). Es hat teilweise übersteuert geklungen hat und Mißklänge in meinem Ohr ertönten, anstatt cooler Gitarrensound.
Außerdem habe ich persönlich keinen Bock auf  Tinitus…das nächste Mal nehme ich mir Oropax mit.

Wir dachten ja erst, dass die erste Vorband Winterborn keinen anständigen Soundcheck gemacht hat, weil eben der Bass so krank war. Die halbe Stunde, wo der komische Sänger da auf der Bühne versuchte Stimmung zu machen verbrachten wir daher draußen.
Seine Stimme war gut, das wars aber auch schon wieder, meine Meinung nur natürlich.
Aber eineinhalb Stunden später bauten Sonata Arctica ein riesen Schlagzeug auf, aus dem ein noch fetterer Bass kam, durch den meine Nase permantent gekribbelt und gekitzelt hat. Vielleicht waren es auch nur die Mikroben in meiner Nase, die Haedbanging machten.

Ich hatte kurz überlegt, wie diese Bruchbude und Drecksbaracke (bähh, des iss ja soo dreckig und ekllig da drin*schüttel* und mich schockt sonst nichts so leicht, aber der Boden aus jahrtausend-alten-gekauten-und-ausgespukten-Kaugummis ist der Oberhammer), namens Hirsch das eigentlich aushält, ohne zusammenzukrachen. xD

Die zweite Vorband Delain war übrigens spitze. Die Sängerin hat eine wunderschöne Stimme. Ich würde sie gerne vergleichen mit Within Tempation, nur das diese Sängerin hier live echt sauber gesungen hat, trotzdem sie erkältet war.
Dann kamen sie endlich… und ich habe ziemlich dumm geschaut, als sie loslegten.
Ich kenne nur einige Lieder (wohl eher die ruhigen) und hatte daher entsprechende Vorstellungen. Darum war ich recht erstaunt, als der Sänger auf der Bühne herumsprang und metal-mäßig rockte. Besonders der Teil mit den Gitarren- und Keytar-Solo war unglaublich geil.
Hatte ich schon erwähnt, dass es sehr laut war? *gg*

Nachtrag: Abgesehen von einem schönen Abend, gab es für mich noch den kleinen Erfolg, dass ich das Konzert überhaupt durchgezogen habe. Nicht, dass ich nicht hinwollte, ich wollte UNDBEDINGT.
Eher der Hintergrund, dass ich noch immer einige Schwierigkeiten habe, gewisse Dinge – gerade in Umgebung mit vielen Menschen – zu erleben, zurückzuführen auf die psychosomatischen Störungen, die ich einige Zeit hatte.
Zwischenzeitlich war es mir auch gar nicht gut ergangen, aber nach einer kurzen Rückzugsmöglichkeit gings weiter. *bergauf es geht*

El domingo 22 de noviembre fue el décimo aniversario de la publicación del álbum de debut de la banda finlandesa Sonata Arctica. Ecliptica es un disco de power metal bastante típico pero de mucha calidad, con claras influencias del grupo Stratovarius. Aunque con el paso de los años, los miembros de la banda han sido capaces de superar ampliamente lo ofrecido en este trabajo, es un álbum muy a tener en cuenta ya que supuso uno de los mejores debuts dentro de este género musical. Normalmente los nuevos conjuntos necesitan de un par de publicaciones para alcanzar un nivel realmente bueno, pero Sonata Arctica ya dejó el listón bastante alto en el año 1999 con Ecliptica, y lo importante es que han ido progresando, llegando a componer obras sobresalientes como Unia (del año 2007) o el último The Days Of Grays (a la venta desde hace unos pocos meses).

Recordemos brevemente como era el sonido de esta banda en sus inicios:

Hear my young ones!

For centuries we have been hunted, killed and skinned by humans. Now our time has come! We shall seek justice!

I searched online for Myanmar metal stuff last night and found a forum. With great expectations, I clicked on the link.

What I found?

They were talking about… nu-metal??? Yes, nu-metal. Frigging hell mallcore stuff like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. There were even people who mentioned Linkin Park and Flyleaf.

Seriously! There was nothing on it but mallcore. -.-

Next one was a blog. He was talking about Slipknot and how much he likes them and on another blog was an article on Myanmar metal scene and the author was talking about Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Frigging Metalcore.

Metal albums aren’t that rare anymore. You can pretty much buy them here. (Last week I got Black Sabbath:The Dio Years and Megadeth’s Endgame.) Or you can download them via Mediafire or 4shared (which I usually do).

It is all about prioritising. Either, I could be sitting at school writing rubbish, which I know is rubbish, about books that mean nothing to me except for the fact that my exam grade is based on them. Or I could be at home, eating my packed lunch from a plate, mug of something warm to drink next to me, and a long list of things I better get done this afternoon. We’ll see how that goes.

And as I’m already quoting. Well, I finally received that email from the artist I’m writing my EE on. He is totally epic. I asked him all these silly questions about his darkroom and printing methods. His reply:

I don’t do darkroom. I don’t like it.

This is one awesome guy, and I might have to declare my undying love for him by the end of this. Seriously, I cannot think of much controversial stuff this guy could’ve done that would have caught my (and the examiner’s) attention, but a photographer who dislikes darkrooms and who does not care about what camera he’s using as long as it’s working? Epic.

~Hours and hours later~

Right. So my day. We had a sucky sucky surprise Paper 2 in SOAS, which wasn’t actually a surprise since I’d written it down in my diary, I just managed to ignore it all of yesterday. So that was bad. Very bad. Then we had bio where the teacher, giggling the whole time, displayed a diagram of a penis on the board and told us that we had fifteen minutes to sketch it down while she was in the other room enjoying her coffee.  She was acting more immature than anyone in my class. It was embarrassing to watch her. And then we had to go through the entire menstrual cycle in detail. It made my tummy hurt to think about it all at once. (That was why I refused to dissect last week -Looking at that lung lying on the table, or being inflated, makes my lungs hurt.) So now I can identify numerous hormones running through my body, and more. Yayness.

I’ve considered becoming a vegetarian. Well, pescetarian, at least. It is not because I feel bad for the animals, or the environment (well, I do, but not enough to change my diet for it.) or cannot afford meat. It is simply that I do not enjoy eating meat. I don’t like the taste of it, nor the texture.  I used to love chicken, turkey, duck and pork. Not anymore. Even duck, which was my favourite dish isn’t as tempting. Is it rude to order vegetarian Peking Duck at a restaurant, I wonder? xP After all, it is the Hoisin that I enjoy so much, not the duck.  Well, that was random. But I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. Just never got around to blogging it. The main reason why I’ve been thinking about it is the Christmas meals. We have roasted pork. Every year. I used to love it, but not so any more. Also, we had elk stew the other day, and I was about to refuse to eat it, as it was making me feel physically sick. I did eat it, but honestly, I’m slightly scarred.

My conclusion, so far, is that I might give vegetarianism a go when I move out. That should be after this summer most hopefully. Then I won’t have to pester my dear mother about my strange eating habits, which would be mean. And until then, I’ll do as I’ve been doing of late. Either force it down or just ignore the meat and eat the veggies.

I did have more to say, as always, but I need to get ready for bed. I’ll come back to this in a bit.

Yay, I’m good, I’m filling out cas forms. They’re tedious asking question including the words: accomplish, successful, difficulties encountered, abilities, attitudes and values developed, benefit, improve and apply to other life situations.

Giger rarely has the time to write. Also, he is very reluctant to critique anyone’s artwork, being reminded of the fact that if he had listened to the advice of his own teachers, he would not be an artist today.

Dear Aspiring Artist:

Here is my advice. Think of it as a five-year plan:

Take whatever courses you find the most interesting.

Study closely the work of the Old Masters.

Stop making art that originates only from your own imagination.

Stay with one technique until you perfect it.

On any given day, always be in the middle of reading a book. When you finish one, start the next. Fiction, nonfiction, biographies, autobiographies, history, science, psychology, or how to build a kite. Anything but go easy on the comic books.

Buy and read the first 6 pages of newspaper every day and also the editorial commentaries. Skip the entertainment section. Su Doku is fine. Do the crossword puzzle.

Fill up a sketchbook every month with pen or pencil drawings of the world around you, not from your imagination.

Buy a book on figure drawing. It’s the only art book you will ever need.

Until you can draw an accurate portrait of someone, you don’t know how to draw.

Stay away from the airbrush. You’ll never master it, hardly anyone ever has.

Visit every museum in your city. Often, until you have seen everything in it. Every kind of museum. Not only the art museums but, of course, those as well.

Forget about contemporary art by living artists, at least for the next few years.

Stay away from most art galleries. Go to art auctions. That’s where the real action is.

Learn to play chess.

Take a business course.

Talk to you mother or father at least once a week.

Do not watch television unless it’s the news or documentaries.

Do not use an Ipod.

No video games, either.

Learn a foreign language.

Learn to cook.

Spend 8 hours in a hospital emergency room.

Save up money so you can travel to a foreign country within the next five years.

Do not litter.

Avoid politically correct people.

Vote in every election or never dare to utter a political opinion. You are not entitled to one.

Buy a digital camera and take photos every day.
If you see nothing interesting to photograph, you will never be a good artist. Keep only one photo of every ten you take. Delete the rest. It will force you to learn how to edit the garbage from your life, to make choices, to recognize what has real value and what is superficial.

Visit an old age home.

Listen to classical music and jazz. If you are unable to appreciate it at least as much as contemporary music, you lack the sensitivity to develop into an artist of any real depth.

Go to the ballet. Classical or Modern, it doesn’t matter. It will teach you to appreciate physical grace and the relationship between sound and movement.

Wake up every morning no later than 8 AM, regardless of what time you went to sleep.

Learn to play a musical instrument.

Learn to swim.

Keep your word.

Never explain your art. People who ask you to do so are idiots.

Never explain yourself. Better yet, never do anything that will, later, require you to explain yourself or to say you’re sorry.

Always use spell check.

Stop aspiring and start doing.

This will keep you very busy but it can’t be helped.
In my opinion, this is how you might, possibly, have a shot at becoming a good artist.

I’ve been researching Giger. Among other stuff. I adore Wikipedia, it can keep me entertained for hours on end. And: I love love love Sonata Arctica. I think my adoration for this band might relate to word blindness. Even when Tony sings out of tune or mispronounces every single word in a sentence, I adore it. Even the old tracks from when they were known as Tricky Beans, and weren’t known, and played Peacemaker.  Anyway, back to the point. Did I have a point? I lost it now.

Damn I’m psyched about that show. It’s a month away and just the thought gives me the shivers. I’ve been waiting to see them live for nine years. Fucking hell.

But I’m off to bed at about now.

Most of good albums for 2009 are already out. I’ve compiled the traditional top 10 list for this year. Any album that is still coming out i doubt will figure in this list since 2009 was such a great year for music compared with 2008.

Please feel free to comment if you think some album in your opinion is missing. I didn’t make the review for all of them because I didn’t want to post too much crap, if you want a specific review in this list let me know.

Total list i listened to was 146 albums for this year, this is the top 10.

1. Riverside – Anno Domini High Definition

Riverside comes back with a the first album of a new trilogy. New sounds, cohesive music changes, innovative and fresh music. Riverside have composed an album which is a perfect reflection of our times. An offering full of symbolism starting with the fact that the title of their fourth release consists of four words and that the album is precisely 44:44 minutes long and an intelligent take on current reality. Anno Domini High Definition is not a concept album in the classic sense, although it features a central theme and a haunting message. “It’s an album about people who know they need to speed up or they’ll get left behind”

2. Porcupine Tree – The Incident

London’s legendary Porcupine tree 10th studio album. Takes the listener on a thrilling audio journey. In turns haunting, desolate, hypnotic and euphoric, its centre-piece is the title track: a stunning 55-minute musical statement that breaks down into 14 separate and often diverse (though interlinked) vignettes. Not the best work of the band but still whatever Porcupine Tree delivers is above anything out in the market. Excellent sound mixing and supreme recording quality.

3.  Mastodon – Crack the Skye

Mastodon has taken hold of the leadership of the New Wave of Progressive Heavy Metal. Crack The Skye, its fourth original studio album, mines subject matter from czarist Russia and astral travel to out-of-body experiences and Stephen Hawking’s theories on wormholes for an unrepentantly heavy aural assault that will shake the heavens. Some personal songs for the band members and really really impressive guitar riffs make this the third on the list for 2009.

4.  Dream Theater – Black Clouds and Silver Linings

Black Clouds & Silver Linings marks another milestone on Dream Theater’s iconoclastic musical journey, which began two and a half decades ago and now encompasses a hugely impressive body of music that’s established the durable progressive metal outfit as a one-of-a-kind creative force with a fiercely devoted international fan base. The new album – produced by band members Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci, who also serve as the group’s main lyricists – offers a vibrant manifestation of the world-class musicianship, vivid lyrical scenarios and ambitious, multi-leveled compositions that have established Dream Theater as a uniquely compelling creative force.

5. Transatlantic – The Whirlwind

A nice surprise in a year full of nice surprises! Not bad at all! I have to sayI was never a big fan of Transatlantic. Not that they were bad, no way. I have both their first albums and I think they are quite good. But I felt something was missing even if their sound had most of what a prog fan wanted: great musicanship, good songwriting, good production and the right influences (meaning symphonic rock of the 70´s). But it lacked a kind of spark. Besides, Neal Morse was clearly the main protagonist on those CDs, making them sound a bit too much like Spock´s Beard (never one of my favorite bands).Well, I´m glad to say that with The Whirldwind they finally made the album we were all waiting for when we heard those musicians were assembling a group. The record drips with the power and conviction that lacked on the previous CDs. And Roine Stolt definitly takes the spotlight here much of the time. Now the band sounds fully like a band. Peter Trewavas is playing some of the heaviest bass in his career (much in the vein of the great Chris Squire), while Mike Portnoy shows he is a truly prog drummer. Best Transatlantic CD to date! The one the finally fulfilled the great expectations of having such extraordinaire musicians doing something as a group.

6.  Lamb of God – Wrath

Wrath is inspired by and based on the 10 plagues from the book of Exodus. After the reflective Sacrament (2006), a deeply personal album that found Blythe exorcising his personal demons, Wrath turns its lyrical focus outward, and returns to more of the breakneck riffing that characterized the band’s early material. A more “raw” sound that revives the metal genre with this excelent release from the pure american metal band, Lamb of God. As always, the musicianship is top notch here, especially the guitar playing, and of course, the drums. I consider Chris Adler to be the druming act that nowadays defies genre.

7.  The mars Volta – Octahedron

Hailed by The New Yorker as ‘perhaps the most musically adventurous act currently signed to a major label’ and by Rolling Stone as 2008’s Best Prog-Rock Band, The Mars Volta makes its Warner Bros. debut with Octahedron, the highly acclaimed group’s fifth studio album. Compared to last year Bedlam in goliath this is a completely different approach from the band to a more acoutic music development. Beautifully constructed, with nice melodic sections accross all the album.
My number one complaint (and there were very few of them) about The Bedlam in Goliath is that the band never took a moment to relax on that album. With every song being fast paced and loud I longed for those moments on a Volta record where I could take a breather before the next relentless thirteen minute prog rock latin jazz head bopping track would begin. Octahedron is the Ying to that albums Yang. I for one welcome a much slower album that builds to a more meaningful and impactful conclusion.

8.  Sonata Arctica – The Days of Grays

I wasn’t really sure if the finish Sonata Arctica would even make the top 10 this year on the first few listens to the album. However The Days of Grays is a nice consolidation of what Sonata Arctica has done on the past few years. With inventive and accurate musicianship the have managed to place all the pieces of the jigsaw together and make a nice mix of (Silence / Winterheart’s Guild) and ( Reckoning Night / Unia ) which were two different eras in the band’s history. Now the’ve returned more to their roots but seems like after passing through the Reckoning /Unia era they have brought back with them the best of that musical approach to the traditional speedy that is more like the early days that made them known worldwide.

9.  The Dear Hunter – Act III: Life and death

Following up where Act II left off Act III is more melodic record with the heavy parts heavier, and the soft parts more serene. Set in a WWI era, “Act III” documents the metamorphosis of a fictional central character as he makes the transition from innocence to impurity. This is heavily produced, highly emotional crossover-prog-rock. A lot of it plays like old time show tunes, or like Broadway musical tunes. There are multilayered harmonies (gorgeous), punctuating horns, and soaring string arrangements, alongside inventive guitar and keyboard parts. The Dear Hunter has been one of the underground bands that deserve more attention due of the crescent quality of their music along with every release. Act III beign the best so far that the band has released.

10.  Maudlin of the Well – Part the Second

Maudlin of the Well’s Part the Second is an almost unbelievable testament to what can happen between a truly talented artist and devoted fans. This album was funded by fan contributions (in fact expanded from a limited record of old ideas to a complete album project integrating new and old material) and then returned to those fans over the internet for free. This alone is so mind-blowingly cool, how music should be, that the album will hold a place in history that I hope becomes a model for what can be when we keep the music as the focus. But the fact is that the result is worthy of its historical place, a modern masterpiece. How all these things aligned seems almost divine. But perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised. The love of music will never die. And not just any music would be able to muster this kind of support. Perhaps it was the fuel of that love that made the music as wonderful as it turned out.  Despite being very experimental, melodic themes pass through different parts in classical fashion, moods ebb and flow perfectly, and rhythms evolve from simple to complex without ever announcing their cleverness.

ladies & gentlemen i give you:  METALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

2 subgenres in particular, power metal & viking metal.  viking metal is self-explanatory, and power metal is basically the child of thrash and speed metal, infused with lyrical obsession of all things that got you beat up in high school:  dungeons & dragons, lord of the rings (before it was cool), fantasy novels, and the like, sung typically very highly (i.e. “ahhhhhhhhAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”).  power metal has been around for a while, but got a little bit of mainstream attention with the success (relatively speaking, they’re far from platinum!) of dragonforce, based highly on their being featured in guitar hero.  dragonforce get some flack from the hardcore fanbase of the scene, they’ve been called “nintendo metal” based on the video game sound of their guitars & keyboards, but i think they pwn.  then again, metal is not my passion, so perhaps that’s why  either way, here’s a hilarious yet awesome (3 words that go together very well when talking about power metal videos & lyrics) video, “operation ground & pound”.

Pueees como hace mucho que no posteo para contar cosas de mi vida cotidiana (fundamentalmente porque no me ocurre gran cosa…) he decidido contar que me voy de conciertooooo again, volvera a ser en la sala Heineken donde vi a Soulfly, pero con la diferencia de que esta vez toca algo menos Death y mas Power Metal, SONATA ARCTICA!

A ver que tal esta el primer Live para mi hermano que es el que me acompañara esta vez…

Nada, fotito de las entradas y ya contare como ha estado a la que vuelva, eso si, esta vez me llevo algodon para joderme algo menos los oidos, porque cuando volvi del de Soulfly los tuve reventados tres dias…

My mum is ill again. And I handle it badly. I do everything she asks me to and more, but I don’t talk to her about my day or listen to what she is saying. And then I feel guilty afterwards. It shouldn’t be like this. At this rate the chance of me constantly feeling bad about something I did or said or ignored or thought concerning my mother is very great. And so, as my train of thought goes, I am pretty sure that I’ll regret the last thing I ever say to my mother. Whenever and whatever that will be.

I remembered what I was going to write yesterday. It was the 20-10-2009- I was going to say that in a year the date would be 20-10-2010 which is cool.

I finished The perks of being a wallflower. It was such a beautiful book. I loved it. I cried reading the last page. I’m sure it wouldn’t make that much of an impact on me normally, but having had a crappy day, it really did make me think.

I will shower. And then listen to happy music and draw with colour-pens. My brain might make itself happy again.
