Nachdem ich einige Sonden losgeschickt und verschiedene Spieler angeflogen hatte, hat meine kleine Armada nun endlich ihr erstes richtiges Gefecht erlebt. In dem Fall war mein Gegner einfach zu unvorsichtig gewesen und hatte seine Jäger nicht, wie es die meisten anderen Spieler tun, während seiner Offline-Zeit in seinem Hangar vor Angriffen in Sicherheit gebracht. Für mich war das eine tolle Gelegenheit, um zu überprüfen, ob die Ergebnisse aus dem Kampfsimulator mit der Wirklichkeit von Weltraumkämpfen übereinstimmen ^^:

Wie man sieht ein klarer Sieg, worauf ich allerdings nicht besonders stolz sein kann, denn meine Flotte war deutlich überlegen. Immerhin bleiben so aber die eigenen Verluste gering, und ich will ja nicht meine mühsam gebauten Zerstörer und Schlachtschiffe schon wieder nachbauen müssen .

Deutlich mühsamer kann es übrigens sein, wenn man einen Titanen farmen will. Einer in meiner Nähe ist offensichtlich inaktiv und hat keine Schiffe, aber einen Haufen Ressourcen, die ich mir gerne holen wollte. Dank seines Schildgenerators musste ich aber insgesamt sicher 5 oder 6 Mal mit voller Stärke dort anrücken, bis ich endlich diese nahezu unkaputtbare Barriere durchbrochen hatte.

Was man beim Raiden letztlich auch noch berücksichtigen sollte, sind die Bündnisse und NAPs der eigenen Allianz. In meinem Fall ist das ein äußerst friedvoller Planetenbund, der möglichst mit allen intelligenten Lebewesen im All Freundschaft schließen möchte. Leider gehören dazu auch einige meiner Nachbarn, und einen von denen musste ich natürlich besuchen, weil ich nicht genau gekuckt hatte. Das gab leichte diplomatische Verwicklungen ^^.

La sonde Rosetta poursuit son voyage vers la comète 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, sur laquelle elle déposera le module Philae. Cela ne l’empêche pas d’observer au passage des astéroïdes comme 2867 Steins et 21 Lutetia. Bien qu’un survol de Steins à 1700 km seulement ne soit prévu que pour le 5 septembre 2008, la sonde s’en est suffisamment rapprochée en mars 2006 pour permettre d’obtenir des premiers renseignements à l’aide de la caméra OSIRIS. Ironies genoeg het ek meer van ‘n probleem daarmee dat hy so hardnekkig volgehou het dit is NIE hy nie, as met die seskvideo self.  Flip man, erken dit was jy en stap aan!  Ons almal neem dom impulsiewe besluite op die ingewing (of swakheid) van die oomblik, maar om so ‘n tirade aan te gaan in jou ontkenning, is om dit net erger te maak!

Ek is die laaste ou wat hom kan veroordeel!  Ek het selwers al hopeloos te veel kere dom goed gedoen in die swaheid van die oomblik!  Al verskil is – ek is nie bekend nie!  Julle weet nie van my nie!   Persoonlik was my strategie – en ek moet my pa daarvoor bedank!!! – om om verskoning te vra, jou pak te vat, en aan te stap!  Leef die oortreding dood!

My pa het baie dinge oorgesien, maar het NOOIT ‘n geliegery oorgesien nie.  Hy’t altyd gesê: as ek jou nie meer kan vertrou nie, kan ek nie vir jou “veg” as dit eendag nodig is nie!  En soos dit moes wees, was dit eendag nodig toe ek valslik beskuldig is van iets!

So ou Juicy, dis jammer dat jy so hardnekkig ontken het – “deny, deny” - maar kry dit nou agter jou rug en maak reg!  Soos die Bybel sê: sondig nie meer.  En as ek my nie verbeel nie, het die voortvarende studente wat die storie gebreek het eendag gesê: ons wil hê almal moet sien die held doen dit greeeld!  As dit so is, stop daarmee!

La sonde Messenger, lancée par la Nasa en août 2004, est passée une première fois près de la planète Mercure en janvier dernier. Messenger, munie de multiples capteurs, a apporté son lot de surprises aux scientifiques.
 
D’une part, les données ont enfin permis de résoudre une question quant à la composition des plaines qui recouvrent Mercure. La sonde a en effet détecté une activité volcanique. Ces plaines sont donc des cratères remplis de lave.
 
D’autre part, les scientifiques ont constaté avec étonnement que Mercure comporte un champ magnétique semblable à celui de la Terre. Cela suppose que Mercure est une planète dont le cœur est actif, et non une planète “morte” dont le magnétisme ne serait qu’une relique du passé (comme le prétendaient bien souvent la communauté scientifique).
 
Autre “surprise”: Messenger a fait les toutes premières observations de particules chargées dans l’exosphère de Mercure. On y a détecté une intense activité causée, en bonne partie, par les radiations et les vents solaires.
 
Un scientifique rattaché au projet a déclaré: “…grâce à Messenger, nous percevons que Mercure est un système complexe et non pas une simple boule de roc et de métal”.
 
Les ténors de la science planétaire avaient toujours défendu une vision de la planète Mercure comme un banal rocher inerte et mort dans l’espace. On considérait comme pure stupidité de s’imaginer que ce roc puisse avoir une quelconque autre action dans le système solaire et envers la Terre que celle de tourner, en errance stérile, et d’apparaître parfois comme un petit point lumineux dans le ciel.
 
Quelle n’est pas la “surprise” maintenant de constater que Mercure ne répond pas au schéma pré établi, et qu’elle est une sphère au magnétisme vivant et actif, interagissant avec le vent solaire et dès lors avec le système solaire lui-même!
 
Ainsi, les multiples “surprises” du monde scientifique sont plus que des surprises. Ce sont de fortes infirmations d’interprétations abusives concernant le réel et ses subtilités et alimentant le matérialisme. Les “surprises” du monde scientifique devraient s’accompagner de la reconnaissance des abus d’interprétation négative à l’égard de visions reconnaissant que le système dans lequel nous existons est vivant. Ces mêmes ténors de la vision matérialiste devraient aussi présenter leurs excuses pour avoir maintenu une position fausse et promettre d’acquérir rapidement la saine humilité et réserve pour ne pas s’exalter dans des interprétations hâtives et abusives alors même que le savoir apparaît si fragile et incertain.

Readers, I have returned from the mother-land! Literally, it is the land of my mother- Georgia. My mother and I had the opportunity to road-trip down South this past weekend. We left at 5:30 a.m. on Friday morning to set out for Tifton, Georgia, which is basically at the Georgia-Florida border.

^^^ Tifton is in the Valdosta region. Whew! What a drive.

Now I’ve always known that I was a Southerner but on this trip, I really tried to allow myself to become enveloped in the whole philosophy of the South. My accent always comes back when I leave my college town but down in Georgia, it came WAY back! Like I said, we drove for about 10 hours straight, stopping only for Bojangles and later for Chick-fil-a, two staple fast food establishments orginating in the South. And I have to say, we were so hungry when we finally stopped for breakfast (after driving for four hours), that Bojangles cajun chicken biscuit was quite possibly the most delectable morsel of food I have ever consumed in my lifetime of twenty-one years.

Between our food stops, we needed to gas up the car so we pulled over at this run-down gas station just below Atlanta. The store clerk was a elderly gentleman with a long white beard wearing an old truckers hat, standing behind the counter wistling loudly and proficiently. As we approached the counter to check out, my mom says to the old man, “I bet nobody else in this store knows what your wistlin’.” The man smiled, “Do you know  the song?” Of course she did…she’s from Georgia. “Ramblin’ Rose,” my mother replied.

This prompted the old man to break into song. Right there, as other customers proceeded to shop, the man serenaded us to the tune of “Ramblin’ Rose” by Nat King Cole. Then mom joined in and the two of them sang the whole song, right there at the counter of the gas station. At that moment, the only thing I could think in my mind was, “Yep. M’home.” Ahh, I love the South.

From there, we arrived at the University of Georgia, Tifton campus where I met with three professors who had a chance to look at my curriculum vitae and offer some helpful advice on how to get into graduate school. I’m glad my first campus visit was at the Tifton campus- everyone was so Southern and friendly, making it a good warm-up round for “How to talk to graduate professors, 101.”

^^^ When we called one of my mom’s old friends to plan a rendez-vous, his first question was, “You got one fixin’ to be a bulldog?” Hahaha! Fixin’.

Once we were done in Tifton, we made our way back to Atlanta after stopping in Macon for dinner with an old friend (we have lots of old friends in the land of peaches). Finding our hotel in Atlanta was a TRIP! It was in the most impossible location EVER and despite the fact that I was on the phone with the hotel clerk, we were having no luck in communicating. She kept giving me stoplights as landmarks: “You should see a stoplight. Turn left there.” I replied several times, “There are lots of stoplights,” which there were. After driving in circles for about forty minutes, we finally found our hotel in the most secluded location possible, parked behind ANOTHER hotel. There were no signs, either. Let this be a lesson to all: I hereby declare that I will book hotel reservations for me and my mother’s outings from now on.

The next day, we visited Athens, home of the University of Georgia (main campus), and Gainesville, mom’s hometown. Athens was absolutely beautiful and the UGA campus was ENORMOUS. It reminded me a lot of the University of Virginia…only older, I think. UGA was the first established public university in the United States and is ranked as an “Unofficial Ivy-league” university. The campus itself is a testament to architecture throughout the last couple centuries; from the back to the front, the buildings grow younger and younger. Because it was a Saturday, no professors were around, so we only had a chance to look around campus ourselves.

^^^ Um. The campus was huge. And gorgeous.

Once we got to Gainesville, we wasted no time in meeting up with some old friends of my mom’s. And when I say old, they really are old. Which was great! I really enjoy spending time with individuals from older generations which might explain why I hang with my mom on the weekends. I had the treat of spending a whole evening (until about midnight) with three different individuals: one was the mother of my mom’s childhood best friend- we took her out to dinner where we learned quickly that she didn’t like shrimp and that there was no way we were paying for our own food. The next was a friend of my grandmother’s who writes inspirational Christian stories for “Chicken Soup for the Soul,” and whose husband was once the mayor of Gainesville. Our last visit was with the town Pharmacist whose wife was my grandmother’s best friend. We called to see if he was available that evening after the dinner hours, “How late do you stay up, Charlie?” He replied very frankly, “Twelve thirty.” I chuckled. And we stayed until twelve thirty, talking the night away in Charlie’s den.

^^^ His den was really old world Georgia– Cozy, slightly over packed with piles of books everywhere, paintings covering every inch of the walls. I loved it.

Then Sunday came. The BIG day. It was time to prepare for the Coldplay concert. Mom and I went into Atlanta to visit one last person then spent the remainder of the afternoon wandering around the city. After visiting our hotel one last time to freshen up, we were off to the concert at Lakewood Ampitheatre. Did I mention that this was an outdoor venue and that it had been raining ALL DAY LONG? Our original plan was to buy tickets for the lawn that encircled the outer edge of the ampitheatre but luckily, we decided to upgrade and go for the tickets that were smack dab in the center of the audience…and under the overhang. The crowd was great. To our left were two gay guys, to our right, several graduates from Georgia Tech University, and behind us were students from University of Georgia. So you can imagine, the crowd was very young and FUN! We all had some drinks, took pictures, danced, sang… It just proves that a show is only as good as its crowd. And the lights were AMAZING! These globes descended from the ceiling of the stage and projected images or colors. During the song “Yellow”, a ton of giant yellow balloons were released from the ceiling of the ampitheatre. The balloons bounced off the crowd as they worked their way towards the stage. It was a surreal image!

Before we even left for Georgia, my mother did her fair share of Coldplay concert research and found that we would be getting a free CD at the end of the show. She also discovered that the band actually travels to the back of the auditorium at each show! The first part I believed, but I had trouble imagining Coldplay out in the rain on the lawn–so mom and I made a bet. And I lost. She was right! They played out in the rain, on the LAWN! The whole show was really amazing. Chris Martin could be likened to Mick Jagger in his performance style; it amazed me at how much he could run and dance around the stage while singing at the same time! The next morning was our scheduled departure and pit-stop in Clemson, South Carolina where I would have several meetings with MORE professors.

^^^ Alright. Alright. She was right, I was wrong. They came into the crowd.

My time at Clemson University was well spent. I had the privilege of meeting with four different professors and a graduate student. The first professor I spoke with was a little Polish woman who is the graduate coordinator for the program I was interested in. When I first arrived, her prominent concern was that I had not decided whether or not I wanted to persue a master’s degree or go directly into a PhD program. After trying to convince me nicely to go straight into a PhD program, she made a startling analogy to get my attention. In her Polish accent, she asked, “Do you want to be like the house wife who sits at home and does everything the man tells her to do? Or do you want to make your own decisions and stand on your own two feet? That is the difference between a master’s degree and a PhD.”

“Whoa,” I thought. So as of now, I am leaning towards a PhD. But it’s still up in the air. After spending four straight hours meeting with Clemson faculty, I was exhausted and starving. Mom and I took off to Cracker Barrel and feasted on cornbread, chicken, cooked carrots, potatoes, and corn on the cob. It was our last high calorie, Southern food “hoo-rah.” Delicious.

The next day, I started my internship with the Department of Environmental Quality which, so far, has proven to be the most incedible opportunity I’ve ever had. I go conoeing and boating on lakes daily. We spend our time in some of the most beautiful regions of Virginia. Today, we saw two bald eagles in the wild on a lake run. Again, incredible. I am learning how to use a “Sonde” which is a tool used to measure pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, and conductivity in water. How cool is that?

Ek sit dikwels en wonder oor God se alwetendheid.  Wat weet God presies oor die toekoms?  Tradisioneel is die vinnige antwoord: God weet alles; dus ook alles oor die toekoms.  Maar dit skep ‘n effense ongemak…

Kom ek gee ‘n praktiese situasie.  Weet God dat ek oor 2 jaar … kom ons sê, bedrog gaan pleeg?  My ongemak met hierdie tradisionele siening is: as ons sê God het dit geweet ;

1. dan is Hy mos nou al teleurgesteld met/in my
2. kon Hy dit mos verhoed het deur my op ‘n ander plek te laat wees; wat natuurlik weer ‘n hele nuwe lomp opsies open
3. en wat van ek wat tussen vandag en oor 2 jr bid en oortuig raak om…, ja, sendingwerk in Mosambiek te gaan doen.  Dan is ek nie waar bedrog gepleeg sou word nie
4. Is God dan onkant gevang, of het Hy dit óók geweet?  As Hy dit ook geweet het en dus dan ook geweet het dat ek NIE die bedrog sou pleeg nie, dan het ek nie…; maar dan’t ek weer iets anders… en so kan die argument al om die punt aangaan!
5. OK wag, kom ons vat ‘n ander een.  Het God geweet Eva sou ongehoorsaam wees? 

Jy sien, in my opinie is die tradisionele siening ‘n “te maklike” antwoord wat, sodra ‘n mens ‘n bietjie verder daaroor dink, jouself eintlik vasdink. 

So hoe dink ek dan daaroor?

1. Wel eerstens, dink ek ons dink verkeerd oor God en tyd.   Ons dink oor tyd liniêr, m.a.w. daar’s ‘n begin (jou geboorte) en ‘n einde (jou dood).  Wel, dit al klaar is betwisbaar.  Het ons ‘n einde?  Ons lewe eintlik vir ewig – na die aardse lewe gaan dit voort (weliswaar in ‘n ander gedaante) in die ewigheid (of die ewige dood of die ewige lewe). Terug by die punt: Terwyl ons liniêr dink, dink ek oor God en tyd in ‘n sirkel.  God het geen begin of einde nie.  God was voor tyd al daar!  In hierdie tydsbegrip-konsep is die uitverkiesing (Eff 1) dan nie iets wat doeeer in die verlede plaasgevind het nie (ons tydbegrip, maar dit kon natuurlik in God se tyd-konsep, of selfs dalk anders), maar eintlik iets wat elke dag plaasvind!  God, as ‘n dinamiese lewende Here, is in elke oomblik betrokke by my, Sy kind, en neem laat dinge toe of nie toe nie.  En as iemand nou besluit om, onder leiding van die Heilige Gees, die Here te aanvaar as sy Verlosser, dan “het die uitverkiesing so pas plaasgevind” – of so iets.  Jy sien, ek glo dat niemand eendag kan sê, “ek was nie uitverkies by die grondlegging van die aarde nie, en daarom kan God ook nie eintlik my veroordeel nie”.  

   En net om dit finaal moeilik te maak – ons kan natuurlik net hieroor wonder!  Daar is nie ‘n manier hoe ek God volledig kan verklaar nie!  Eenvoudig, as ek sou kon, sou Hy te klein wees om “MY GOD” te wees.

2. Tweedens wonder ek dan of dit nie eerder is dat God nié weet oor die “bedrog wat ek oor 2 jaar sou pleeg” nie.  Nie omdat Hy in Sy grootheid aangetas word nie, maar eerder omdat dit nie eintlik die punt is nie.  As God in ‘n lewendige verhouding met my staan en ‘n dinamiese God met my is elke dag, dan gaan dit nie oor môre nie. 

   Maar ook omdat God sonde haat en dit nooit sal/wil inreken in Sy raadsplan nie (so glo ek daaroor), daarom “weet” Hy nie oor die “bedrog” nie.  Wanneer dit wel plaasvind, dan tree Hy in en laat dit ten goede uitwerk (Rom 8:39 ev ).

3. En derdens (wat ook ‘n topic op sy eie kan word), as Hy dit “weet”, dan moet Hy in sommige gevalle, selfs sonde “organize” om hierdie vooraf beplande (blouplan) ten uitvoer te bring!  En dit kan nie!!!

So hoe het dit gekom dat ek hieroor wonder.  Ek glo ek is in ‘n posisie geplaas deur God se toedoen.  Die “odds” is duidelik dat God gehelp het.  As dinge sleg en verkeerd loop, (wat natuurlik ons eie skuld ook kan wees!), dan, as jy in die tradisionele siening glo, wonder jy waarom Hy jou uit jou vorige “goeie” situasie geneem het na die slegter een.  Dit kan antuurlik ook wees ter wille van jou groei!, maar dis ‘n volgende punt.  So, het God geweet van die moeilikheid in die posisie waarin “hy jou geplaas” het?  Ek dink nie so nie.  Maar nou dat dit daar is, nou help Hy jou en “laat alles ten goede” uitwerk. 

Sjoe, lekker deurmekaar, maar dis hoe gebrekkig ons oor God kan dink, want ons ken maar ten dele!

Des extraterrestres sur Encelade?

(Agence Science-Presse) – Les chercheurs de vie extraterrestre devront ajouter un nouveau nom à leurs planètes préférées. Il y avait Mars, mais aussi Titan, une lune de Saturne et Europe, une lune de Jupiter qui cacherait de l’eau à l’état liquide sous son épaisse couche de glace.

Eh bien Encelade, une lune de Saturne, pourrait être une soeur jumelle d’Europe: la sonde américaine Cassini, qui tourne autour de Saturne, a détecté du sodium dans le sillage de cette lune, qui pourrait se retrouver là lorsqu’une partie de l’océan caché s’échappe dans l’espace en geysers.

Idag intervjuet Marianne og jeg elever ved Elvebakken videregående skole. Samtidig sendte vi ut våre kulturelle sonder. Sondene ble utdelt ved til fem elever , og skal være hos dem i 10 dager.

Pakken elevene fikk utdelt inneholder instruksjoner, en notatbok, ett frankert kort, noen klistremerker og ett kamera. Det er trykket oppgaver på kameraet, og i boka.

Hvorfor blogger jeg dette? Jeg er veldig spent på resultatet og utfallet av sondene! Elevene virket nysgjerrige og engasjerte i oppgaven, men det gjenstår å se hvor mange av oppgavene de svarer på og hvordan de løser det. Uansett var det ett fint første møte med målgruppen.
