Background Articles and Videos

The Platters

“…The Platters were a successful vocal group of the early rock and roll era. Their distinctive sound was a bridge between the pre-rock Tin Pan Alley tradition, and the burgeoning new genre. The original group members were Alex Hodge, Cornell Gunther, David Lynch, Joe Jefferson, Gaynel Hodge and Herb Reed.

After signing with Buck Ram, the act went through several personnel changes before hitting the charts, with the most successful incarnation comprising lead tenor Tony Williams, David Lynch, Paul Robi, Herb Reed, and Zola Taylor. …”

Zola Taylor (contralto) (born 17 March, 1934 (some sources say 1938), died 30 April, 2007, Los Angeles, California)
Paul Robi (baritone) (born 20 August, 1931; died 1 February, 1989)
Herb Reed (bass) (born 7 August, 1928)

Part of the burgeoning Los Angeles rhythm & blues scene of the early 1950’s, the original Platters group consisted of Cornell Gunter, brothers Gaynel and Alex Hodge, Joe Jefferson and Curtis Williams. Formed in January 1953, the original line-up showed several early changes, with cab driver David Lynch replacing Joe Jefferson, Herb Reed (from the gospel group the Wings Over Jordan) replacing Curtis Williams and Tony Williams (introduced by his sister, Linda Hayes) replacing Cornell Gunter. Cornell Gunter went on to play an important part in the stories of the Flairs and the Coasters. His sister Shirley Gunter also sang with the Flairs and recorded with her own group, the Queens, on Modern.

They were signed by Ralph Bass to King subsidiary, Federal Records and, after an un-credited appearance behind Big Jay McNeely chanting the title on ‘Nervous Man Nervous’ (Federal 12141), the group appeared in the studio under their own name in October 1953. One of the songs they recorded was ‘Only You (And You Alone’), written by big-band arranger Buck Ram, who had penned the song for the group that he idolised, the Ink Spots [for more on Buck Ram, see http://www.geocities.com/shakin_stacks/buckram.txt and http://www.thegoldenplatter.com/buckram.html ]

The Platters’ early attempt at ‘Only You’ was considered by label supremo Syd Nathan to be unsuitable for release and was held in the can until late 1955, when it was marketed as a spoiler following the runaway success of the Mercury hit version. Buck Ram had, by this time, become the group’s manager – he also managed other local acts – the Penguins, the Flairs, the Colts, Young Jessie and Linda Hayes. It was his idea to augment the male quartet with the addition of a perky female member of Shirley Gunter’s Queens, Zola Taylor, in early 1954. Shortly thereafter, Paul Robi replaced Alex Hodge, (Gaynel Hodge had already quit the group), and the ‘classic’ Platters’ line-up was in place. …”

“…In 1990 the Platters were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

To quote from Marv Goldberg’s ‘R&B Notebooks’: “What were the secrets of this remarkable success? The Platters’ sound was crisp and clear and, above all, understandable. They specialized in adult ballads and soulful renditions of pre-rock standards. Their lush harmonies were framed by string-laden arrangements and benefited from Mercury’s state-of-the-art recording technology”.

And Jay Warner writes in ‘American Singing Groups’: “By the time their recording days were done, they’d amassed 16 gold singles and three million-selling LPs. They performed in cities and countries that most Americans never dreamed had even heard a Platters disc, taking American music to appreciative audiences all over the world.”

They had The Magic Touch.

Stephen

Let me confess, this song was directly inspired by Cordelia’s Dad’s The Frozen Girl; I just loved the long, story-telling ballad, so reminiscent of the Swedish Skillingtryck (things that cost a shilling to print/buy—a broadsheet ballad) which my dad loved and which I used to sing as a child, all sad, all about winter and death and alcoholic fathers letting their daughters freeze to death (or starve to death) while they drank themselves to a stupor. Very cheery stuff.

So, I tried my hand at this particular genre, and since I rarely manage to write any songs shorter than seven minutes, now that I was to write a long song, well, it turned out to be seventeen or so minutes. Long enough to need two YouTube uploads (Part 1 and Part 2).

It really is a tale set to music. More a telling than a song.

Part 1:

Part 2:

The lyrics:

Stephen

Stephen was born
on the First of July
rosy of cheek
and a brightness of eye
all heart and lung
and a breath and a cry
glad to arrive
maybe sad
to have parted

Ten little fingers
and ten little toes
two eyes and ears
and a delicate nose
though with ten brothers
and sisters and those
soon on the way
he was erelong
forsaken

Always the youngest
not counting the twins
threadbares and hand-me-down
patches and pins
asking for little
he cowers and grins
just for a smile
or a pat
on his shoulder

Last to a supper
of gristle and crumb
teasing a hunger
and cold that benumb
left to his own
and his dreams to succumb
into a world
of his hopes
and his demons

Sensing the light
within story and song
finding the words
where the meanings belong
hiding in books
where he read before long
learning to fly
above paper
and letters

Caught by his father
asleep on the page
startled and frightened
he woke to his rage
told by the fist
boys don’t read at your age
told by the cane
you’re no better
than others

Still by the light
of a clandestine flame
Stephen would travel
the worlds he became
seeing no crime
in his lettery game
tracing its ink
and its papery
byways

High over mountains
and oceans he flew
deep within jungles
and deserts he grew
racing by night
for the kingdom he knew
spreading his wings
and his heart
and his hunger

One tiny pencil
an inch maybe two
that and some yellowy
paper would do
home to the words
where his dream would shine through
home to the song
of his soul
and his rising

Sam was his brother
and older by four
Sam was a monger
in secrets and more
he brought the father
one night to the door
showing with pride
what a crime
he’d uncovered

Damn you I’ve told you
you’ll come to no good
Damn you I’ll make you
behave like you should
father was shaking
with rage where he stood
breaking his pencil
then breaking
his fingers

Writhing he moaned
in his fingery pain
black blue and bleeding
they won’t write again
pleading for help
though he whispered in vain
no one would light up
his tormented
darkness

Beggar boy beggar boy
lumps for his hands
Stephen now cowers
and grins where he stands
cap on the ground
for the coin as it lands
ringing the news
he may yet have
his supper

Beggar man beggar man
lumps for his hands
Stephen still cowers
and grins where he stands
cap on the ground
for a coin as it lands
telling anew
he may yet have
his supper

Beggar man dreamer
grown into a tree
roots in the ground
where his feet used to be
willowy branches
forgiving and free
touching the sky
with his heart
and his hunger

Stephen still travels
a kingdom of dream
of ocean and valley
of forest and stream
closing his eyes
he can sense every gleam
nurturing all
into memorized
phrases

Moment by moment
he adds to his song
sentence by sentence
he guides it along
whisper by whisper
he will before long
come to the gate
he has hungered
and prayed for

Stephen would die
on a cold winter’s day
all knots and bark
on his bed where he lay
no one to hold him
or beg him to stay
no one to see
he was glad
to have parted

The new one from T-Pain is out! Take your shirt off which he revealed at his concert last month was a massive hit with the crowd has now hit the charts and the hearts of many. Taking a grab at Jay-Z (who is constantly dissin T-Pain for using auto-tune) fights back in this song. Whether you love it or hate it you cannot deny T-Pain is king of auto-tune (unlike KanYe West) and kills it. No doubt this will be huge on a public level in coming weeks along with his new album RevoleR due out in early 2010.:)

Written by Gary Ewer, from “The Essential Secrets of Songwriting” website.

If you don’t know the music of Sia, you’re missing a real treat. Her music is a perfect example of how songwriters need only venture minimally outside the box to create fantastic music. “Soon We’ll Be Found” is a case in point. By using simple harmonic modulations and other formal elements, Sia demonstrates simple devices that other songwriters could and should be using.

The first formal element of interest is the use of the two-part verse, the first eight bars being in C minor, with the second eight bars brightening to the relative major:

Cm Fm G Cm Fm G Cm Fm G Ab Bb ||Eb

The Ab and Bb are pivot chords that exists in both keys of C minor and Eb major, providing a seamless way to modulate to the relative major key. The song then proceeds with the second part of the verse, now in major. So songwriters, if you’re writing a song in minor, and are tiring of the constant mood of that key, modulating to the relative major is easy to do with a flat-VII.

The next interesting harmonic device Sia uses is the so-called “modal mixture”, or borrowed chord. The second chord of this part of the verse is Abm, where one would normally use Ab. A borrowed chord is one which normally exists in the minor side of the key, but is “borrowed” to add an interesting harmonic flavour:

Eb Abm Eb Abm Eb Abm Bb G

On we go to the chorus, and the chord progressions here pull the listener back and forth from the key of C minor to Eb major, and back again. You might think that the harmonic structure is more ambiguous in the chorus than it was in the verse, but what’s actually happening is that the chorus represents the melding of two different harmonic organizations we found in the verse. While part 1 of the verse emphasized minor, and part 2 accentuated major, we get both living in close proximity in the chorus. In that sense, the verse harmonic treatment is what allows the chorus to work so well.

Sia has one more interesting goodie for us. It’s not often that we get to hear Augmented Sixth chords in popular music styles; it is usually a classification of chord reserved for classical composers. An Aug 6th is a chord usually built on the flat-VI degree of the scale, and most often resolves to the dominant chord. In this song, we find it in the bridge. The first time we hear it (at 2′ 24″) it simply moves immediately to Cm, but the second time, (2′ 35″) it resolves to G in preparation for the return of C minor. The Aug 6th is a really useful “predominant” chord that gives you a new way of approaching the dominant chord other than from IV.

These devices are very simple to use, and require almost nothing more than a bit of musical imagination. They add a sense of creativity to your music without throwing the balance too far toward unpredictable, and turn something mundane into something that captivates the listener.

It is being ‘ghosted’ by his friend and fellow singer/writer Chris Berry, who also comes from Hull originally. ‘This week saw Joe’s story reach 37,500 words,’ says Chris. ‘Having interviewed Joe continuously throughout the year I now have several dossiers of information about his life and it makes for a hugely entertaining read! I know all of his legions of fans will not want to miss this, his first time ever in putting down his life story. It is packed with emotional upheaval, the highs of reaching 12 million people a week through his TV shows, to the lows of being at death’s door, or penniless, or in a bad state of mentally. But Joe is nothing if not honest and the affrays, the bankruptcies, the court cases, his love life, in some cases his sex life, his cancer, his life saving operation – none of that is shirked here. Of course, for legal reasons, there are some who Joe cannot put into print the exact words he feels, as they might land him up in court again. Those people will know who they are when they come to certain parts of the book! Joe has – it seems – been right royally stuffed (that could even be another word, I’ll leave you to fill in your own word in place of stuffed) by a number of people over the years! Everyone who has ever come across Joe will want to read this book!’ Chris is well on the way to the target length of the book, which will be around 90,000 words and it will be published in March 2010 by Great Northern Books. Joe is currently undertaking his Autumn/Winter tour and this week will play Southport on Wednesday 25 November & Whitley Bay on Saturday 28 November.

Though his curious mind proves surprisingly adept at intercepting Canadian pot smugglers and potentially dangerous illegals, years of security hysteria and cross-border resentment — and a fascinating young Canadian who has turned her green thumb to a more lucrative crop — complicate Brandon’ s world in ways even he might not be able to see past.

Border Songs is that rare delight: a gently satirical portrait, an extraordinary love story and a celebration of the coincidental and the miraculous.

“A crazy season on both sides of the “Ditch”" 2009-11-05
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann (the Lehigh Valley, PA)
Although Lynch’s second novel begins more slowly than his first, it contains all of the miraculous connections to nature and the quirky characters that propelled him onto the literary scene. Brandon Vandercool is seemingly a lug of a man: six-foot-eight, severely dyslexic, odd, artistic in an almost disturbing way, and largely innocent of the more complicated goings-on around him. He identifies more with the myriad bird life around him than he does with his neighbors in the small rural area along the US/Canadian border. But Brandon is finely attuned to his surroundings — the slight misplacement of a cobweb or the colorful flash of a piece of cloth — and he never fails to act on instinct. As he begins his job as a Border Patrol agent, both his instincts and his stumbling, bumbling personality lead to a string of surprising arrests that no one can believe are accidental. Drug dealers believe that they have a mole, and agents praise his superior talent for the job, sometimes giving his trainer Dionne the credit for his success. Brandon’s father Norm, a dairyman, remains both embarrassed and protective of his son. Madeline, a pothead with her own demons, doesn’t know what to make of Brandon’s advancements.

Although the novel centers around Brandon and the unwanted attention stemming from his arrest of two illegal aliens, dubbed the “Prince and Princess of Nowhere,” it shifts back and forth into the lives of others along the ditch that acts as a porous Pacific Northwest border between the two countries. Neighbors could be Canadian or American, and they mingle and share jabs and stories. They each harbor personal dramas that develop into defining moments. Most characterizations are first-rate and memorable, and Lynch’s descriptive language, particularly when turned toward nature, can be breathtaking. With every page, the novel becomes stronger and larger and more compelling.

Border Songs is literary fiction the way it should be: with issues, characters, and language that build as it progresses. Because it is a relatively quiet novel, readers expecting more suspenseful fare will likely be disappointed. Its treasures lie in the relationships between characters, their desires, and the way they all come together.

Also by this author, and a novel I highly recommend: The Highest Tide [HIGHEST TIDE]

Brandon is a border patrol agent whose duty station lies along the stretch of unfenced border between Washington State and British Columbia, part of the longest undefended border in the world. And Brandon is a gentle giant who likes nature and the outdoors and wouldn’t hurt a fly. Indeed, he exemplifies the total lack of paranoia that once existed here. In Brandon, Jim Lynch has created an unforgettable character whose adventures are brought to life with rich imagery that propels the reader through a charming story–well worth the journey.

I also enjoyed his take on how the trade in drugs and people-smuggling along the British Columbia-Washington State border, was radically changing the sense of community in the Peace Arch region. The temptation to aid and abet the trade for big bucks by otherwise law-abiding, God-fearing citizens on both sides of the 49th Parallel is convincingly presented here also.

However, Lynch only peripherally alludes to the escalation of the “War on Drugs” near the end of the book when his character, Madeline, asks her drug kingpin/lover/ boss, Toby, why he has relaxed his proscription against his crews carrying weapons .

As a Canadian resident of Greater Vancouver, I see the narcotic production and export of marijuana, to the U.S. as a dangerous, society-altering phenomenon up here. Gang wars and shootings over dope control and distribution have made city streets unsafe, and has taxed police resources mightily. And this spectre was in the back of my mind as I read “Border Songs”. Illegal transport across the rather poorly-defined and easily-breached boundary , sometimes seemed more like an episode of the wholesome British police procedural TV show “Heartbeat” with its cast of eccentric villagers and usually incompetent and non-lethal crooks.

However, despite that nitpick, don’t let me put you off Lynch’s fine story. You’ll relish his peculiar Border Patrol giant, Brandon, his family, neighbours and cop colleagues. You will also be amazed to read that this region is host to such an astonishing number of different birds on the wing to view.

If this isn’t authorial poetic license, I feel like grabbing my binoculars and heading south.

Fox were a British band from the 70s formed by American Kenny Young, who co-wrote Under The Boardwalk, and Australian singer Noosha Fox (aka Susan Traynor). Only You Can was their first hit, followed it up with S-s-single Bed. Both songs are fantastic, but I thought I’d include Only You Can here, as it has the best groove:

Social media is a constant development in our modern world. Recently stumbling across an iphone app

Social media is a constant development in our modern world.

Recently stumbling across an iphone app, I realized that there is hardly a limit to the information we are able to access behind a computer or on the go. Shazam, an iphone application that allows an individual to “tag” the music they are listening to at any point. With the simple access to internet through your iphone, shazam records a piece of a song that one is listening to, identifying not the name of the song, but the places where the album can be bought, detailed information about the artist, and any other link that you might imagine. As we see, social media has a tendency to reach us nowadays, opposed to the fact of having to go out and find the information yourself.

The revolutionization of the media and information accessible at any moment at any given time has presented us, society as the public, a technologically easier life. Shazam, one of the twenty six thousand applications available on the iphone, provides the us with an image of the facility and easy access to fulfill almost any desire we please. As time ticks, we as society can rest assure that technology and comfort level accessible to the audience will develop.

http://blog.pricegrabber.com/techstyle/files/2009/04/shazamiphoneapplication.jpg

The icon is best used to visually describe shazam and its achievements. As the music plays, shazam so called “listens” to part of the song as showed on the image and later (with a connection to internet) identifies virtually everything there is to know about the song, album, and artist.

Love wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be… Even though I tried to love passionately, it didn’t be

Love wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be…
Even though I tried to love passionately, it didn’t become, as I wanted it to become…

The words to break up didn’t come out as easily as I thought they would…
When I saw your face in reality, my mouth wouldn’t open up.
So that’s why I ended up calling you, while looking at a piece of paper that I wrote beforehand
I just continued to read the words I wanted to say to you and then hung up the phone…
That’s why you didn’t know how I felt…

You still think that my heart changed first…
Therefore besides the reason why we broke up…
The reason that you were dumped first…
I thought made you hurt…
Well, how come you think that way….
How come it’s that way until the end…
Why can’t you forget me?

You don’t know, You really don’t know me…
From this moment we break up, you still don’t know how I felt…

When I first saw you, I had a crush on you
My heart was fluttering I couldn’t sleep at all…
Your appearance when you talk to people…
Your appearance when you laugh, talk, and joke around…
My eyes never left you even for a second…
Because you were so pretty I didn’t have any confidence…
From that moment, from the moment we were dating I was restless…
Because I loved you so much…

You were younger than me when we dated…
We were dull and didn’t do a lot of things.
I thought that might be a reason for you to leave me…
If you wanted to do something, I let you do everything you wanted…
I listened to all your words, your arguments that didn’t work/make sense
While letting that happen, your own world became bigger and bigger…
Soon, to the point I couldn’t stand it, I became a small portion of it.

You don’t know, you really don’t know me…
From this we break up, you still don’t know how I felt…

After breaking up like that, you called me twice asking…
How I was doing and why I didn’t call…
She told me in a tone that didn’t mean anything…
I thought she could have at least said that she was sorrie…
Or just not in that tone of voice, that’s what I expected…
However you were still the same…
Therefore, I was compelled to hang up the phone again…

Yet, the words saying that I didn’t want to break up…
You don’t know the words in my heart that I couldn’t say…
You don’t know… (You don’t know me…)
You really don’t know me… (You don’t know…)
From this moment we break up… (You…)
You don’t know how I feel… (You don’t know…)

You don’t know how I feel… (You don’t know…)
You don’t know. You really don’t know how I feel…
(You really don’t know me. You really don’t know me…)
From this moment we break up you don’t know me…
(From this moment you don’t know me…)

Finally. Its time for the concert. Yes. Its time. Me and Marcus went in at rite 6.30 and was late by a few secs when the song started. Well when i made my way to my seats…Someone was there. So i bo bian since 1st song was King Gainer and i love it a lot, faster put my bags down 1st and took out lightstick and starting swinging!!! The crowd is really high and siao. So af one song i faster ask that guy if hes got the wrong seat and yes… NB CB TAKE MY SEAT U WANNA FUCKING DIE?!

Forgot 2nd song but its a damn nice song also. Fuck yes!!! Then aft got Makka na Chikai, Try again, A slow song. Fuck yes, Makka na Chikai makes everyone high like siao lol. Everyone was singing along. And the guy beside me was really crazy fellow lol. Got moefied by him really.

Then came the EPIC moment of the whole concert. When he said he wanted to bring his band nxt time, everyone was chanting JAM Project like siao. Then in the end he said: “Yea i will come bak nxt year with them.”Everyone roared like some crazy ppl. Me and Marcus punch each other’s fist YEA!!! Even if its not all, but one by one they come ^_^.

Then Try again was fucking win with Basara live really. Damn its totally great. In the end he threw his guitar prick, which landed near Marcus and he didnt notice -_-. Then when someone found it we all “WOOOOO” at him haha. Fun.

Then somewhere around there where May’n comes out. Pink Monsoon expected one, then around 3 new songs which i like 1 or 2. Really electrifying songs and they are quite nice. Then aft Shangri-La OP which high the crowd again!! Then aft her album son i think nv quite hear 1 or 2. Then came Northern Cross! O god, its the best i can get out of this really. SAIKOU!!!!! Aft somemore epic one, who wanna guess?!

………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

LION SOLO BY MAY’N. OMFG OMFG OMFGGGGGG!!! I CANT BELIEVE IT FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn it was fucking nice that i was jumping when the music starts without even caring abt the bak ppl. Yes i jumped. JUMPED! Lol. Its too good. I sang all the way to the end with all my breathe. Aft was one of her songs again or something i cant remember, too intoxicated by the atmosphere. Then May’n went bak in and we shouted “MOU IKKAI!” Until my throat pure rot and pain. Then came both May’n and Yoshiki!!!

Started with Totsugeki Love Heart, which was really powerful and explosive. Until this point i m already fking happy. Then came Diamond Crevasse sang by May’n and Guitar by Yoshiki. Thats fking cool, fking too cool i tell u. Then last song. Dynamite Explosion!! I totally overwhelmed myself by this song, lots of chance to jump!!! DYNAMITE = Jump. Haha. And when Reiko and Celestia, who were the MCs for this year speaks abt AFA’ 10 in SG, everyone ROARED! WOHOO, Rainen mo Shingaporu ni arun.

Hmm…Live is really too different from dumb MP3… The bass, which pump urs blood up and the echo of it hitting ur body. Is really fking good. The image or rather the singer u like rite in front of u, u really get charged up. The swinging of lightsticks of everyone, the sweat, the hotness, the voice, NOTHING in this world replaces them. Its simply too Awesome to not miss it.

May’n English went from some Singapore Auntie Standard to some normal person standard . Shes really good at it, although she did forgot some parts :p. But that was cute of her.

“I love Singapore! I love Roti Prata! I love Chicken Rice! I love Takoyaki! I love Pizza Hut!”

God, this is 18 years of my pathetic life, the best day ever. Thank You for giving me such a good day on 22th of November 2009. I will nv forget this day even if i die.

The Giraffes are a hedonistic and heavy rock and roll band from Brooklyn, New York. Fearless Music is a television show that airs on Saturday nights (late) featuring indie bands performing live. The Giraffes played a song last night on the show (you can go vote for them), which hasn’t been cranked into the Internet yet. When it does — probably sometime this week — I’ll be sure to embed it. The band also played the show years ago, when their self-titled album came out. On Fearless’ website their dubbing the song “Having Fun With Our Souls” when any Giraffe fan or Giraffe himself would call it “Having Fun With Assholes” (the real title). Quite a difference in meaning there. Besides, anyone who knows the band knows these guys don’t have souls. Either they were born without them, or they sold them one a piece each for a ringed six-pack of Diesel-Talls. Here’s a good vid of “Louie Guthrie Wants to Kill Me” off Prime Motivator. Notice how many beers, bottles, cups, and drinks are thrown on the singer and his reaction (or lack of), that should give you a good indication of what type of band this is.
