A Christmas Jazz Tale

‘Twas the night before Christmas and the gig was running late;
No sugar plums, no candy canes, just another overtime club date,
Holidays are work days in a jazz musician’s life,
A chance to make some extra bucks to take home to the wife.

Chanukah’s underway, Kwaanza starts tomorrow,
The Ramadan fast soon ends, and I’ll forget the others to my sorrow.
If you want to make a living in the music world these days,
You’d better learn to celebrate in many different ways.

The clock slowly turned toward the midnight hour,
As we played a jazzed up version of the “Waltz of the Flowers.”
We labored on, “White Christmas,” “Frosty” and “Silent Night”;
And I wondered if we’d still be jamming “My Favorite Things” at first light.

But we finally got lucky, as the leader kicked off the final medley.
The singer mauled “The Christmas Song,” a version Mel would have found deadly,
We did the “Jingle Bell Mambo” and the “Drummer Boy Bossa Nova,”
And wrapped it all up, with a rock “Hallelujah” coda.

I packed my horn, gave the guys my best wishes and headed into the night.
The streets were dark and quiet, the stores closed up tight.
Not that it would have mattered, since the gig barely paid the rent,
And whatever I could afford for presents had already been spent.

I walked through the falling snow, filled with memories of Christmas past,
Of marching bands and Christmas parades, of lighted trees and times too good to last.
And I wondered if my kids, when adulthood beckons,
Would remember their holidays with the same sweet affection.

My footsteps led me home to a house warm and cozy,
Where my wife and my children lay innocently dozing.
So I sat for a while in the late night still,
Watching the snow fall gently on the hill.

When I suddenly heard a familiar sound in the distance,
A rhythm section swinging with hard driving persistence.
But this one was strange, something I’d never heard before,
A brisk and spirited clatter I can only describe as hoof beats galore.

Then a new sound, one both familiar yet odd,
Called out through the snowflakes, like a leader commanding a squad.
“On Trane! On Dizzy! On Monk! On Duke!
On Sonny! On Bird! On Miles! On Klook!”

The next thing I heard was just as amazing,
A set of riffs, hard-swinging and blazing,
Played on an instrument that was new to me,
The sting of a trumpet, the silk of a sax, the tone of a bone, all blended with glee.

I ran to the window to see what was coming,
And was met with a sight incredibly stunning,
What looked like a bright red ‘57 Chevy,
Pulled through the sky by eight reindeer in a bevy.

They landed in my yard and the driver leaped out;
Grabbing a pack from the back he quickly turned about.
I blinked my eyes at this strange apparition,
His cheeks like Dizzy, his smile like Pops, as natty as Miles, a man on a mission.

“Call me Father Jazz,” he said as he came through the door, musicians are my specialty.
I’ll even make a stop tonight with a little something for Kenny G.”
Then, opening his pack, he lightly danced to our tree,
Placing presents beneath it, ever so gently.

“There’s a drum set for Alex,” he said, “that kid has great time.
And a guitar for Allegra, ’cause the songs she writes are so fine.
And the books and the wristwatch you wanted for your wife,
That you couldn’t afford, living a jazz musician’s life.”

This is way too weird, I thought, it must be a dream;
Something like this is too good to be what it seems.
“Oh, it’s the real deal,” said Father Jazz, with a riff-like snap of his fingers.
“You’re on my list of serious jazz swingers.”

Moving to the doorway he turned back for a final review:
“And if you’re wondering why no box has been left for you,
It’s because your present has already been given.
You know what it is? It’s the spirit that makes your imagination so driven.”

“Musicians like you know that the gift of music is the gift of love.
It’s a gift that can only have come from above.
And those non-jazz Beatles had it right, for all our sakes,
When they said, ‘The love you take is equal to the love you make’.”

He bounded lightly through the snow to his flying red Chevy,
Blew a celestial riff on his amazing horn — so heavy!
And urged his team forward with a rallying command,
“On Dizzy! On Bird! On Miles! On Trane!”

As his eager steeds rose into the winter sky,
Father Jazz called out one last stirring cry.
Looking down with a radiant smile and a farewell wave:
“Stay cool, Bro’ and keep the music playing.”

First off – there is seriously like a foot or more of snow outside the window next to me and its still snowing a bit. The snow is almost to the window, its crazy.

That aside I just wanted to give a little update on the blog and clear up some things while I am at it. This blog is what I like to call a free style blog. In other words, like the name says, its a place for me to rant (talk) about whatever I please. And more importantly it is not a place where I sit down and proofread every detail of the postings. I am my own boss and I really like this blog to have its own style. I will keep the content readable as you have already seen, but I refuse to spend as much time proofreading as I do writing…I already have to do that for the other places I write for

Anyhow, I recently got my desktop back up and running. Which also means that since I have some downtime from school…its time for video games! So that being said I also got 1 (maybe 2, still waiting) job(s) writing for some video game websites. This has taken up some of my writing time so I havent really been specifically searching for content to put on here the last few days. But NEVER FEAR! I will be writing more on here in the days to come. I just need to get through this snow storm, finish some articles and deal with some x-mas fun!

Repairing a computer thats self built sucks.

First off, I understand not everyone builds their own personal desktop computers. That being said – if you are a heavy gamer on the PC and you are not building your own computers, I feel somewhat sorry for you. Thats like having a real passion for vehicles and only buying stock cars that you never toy with or try to beef up or put a better engine in. Gamers just do this, we buy parts for a computer we teach ourselves (or in some cases take classes on it) how to build and repair our babies. We want to get the best graphics cards (for the cheapest we can, come on..we all know most gamers don’t have a lot of money backing them lol) and the most power out of our computer. When that new top of the line almost realistic video game comes out in two months we want to play it THAT DAY. We don’t want to sit around for the next 4 or 6 months waiting for Dell to release its BRAND NEW power gaming computer (which by the way, isnt that new, its already usually 6 months behind in power when they ‘release’ them). Sorry for the tangent, I have a passion lol.

All that aside repairing a computer that ‘dies’ suddenly really truely sucks. You almost always pray and hope to yourself (as with any mechanical property) that its something super simple and cheap to fix so that youll be up and running in an hour or two. However, its never that easy and every gamer or car enthusiast knows this. Two weeks ago my PSU (Power supply unit) died on me and at the time I didnt have the cash to go out and just pick up another. So I did my research for a few days to find the right deals and so forth and once I came into enough money I bought one and had it delivered. Sadly once I spent a decent amount of time rewiring my entire computer with this new baby I discovered something terrible. Not only did my PSU die but it seems to have also fried either my Motherboard or my CPU (processor) or both. Now if you don’t already understand what this all means Ill give it to you in a short spread. Basically replacing a motherboard, CPU, and PSU is just one graphics card and a ram stick away from recreating an entire computer. Yea…that hurts the bank and my spare time.

Thankfully I should have the money to fix it (yay for Christmas) and being that I have all this spare time on my hands from the lack of college work I have been able to find great deals.

When schools about to start you can’t stand it, but when it just ends you dont know how to conduct yourself.

No kidding. I call it having a withdrawl from that hell hole called college lol. After finishing all my final papers and exams, I have found myself with itchy fingers and a power house of a mind with nothing to spend it on. Sure, gaming is fun dont get me wrong. I just can’t shake the fact that I need to investigate something, or write something, or research a topic – I need something … productive? Never thought I would say that…in fact, just act like I didn’t.

I recently started this blog for just this very reason. I also started doing a workload more research in investing money for future uses. Hell I have even gone back and looked at old tests and quizzes for classes that have been over for a week or more. Its depressing actually…my life is THAT boring lol. And while writing this it just dawned on me whats so pathetic. Im writing this blog while sitting in the local community college’s computer lab…I guess my life really is college + computers and thats it.

Quick question

I know my blog is really, REALLY new. I also know it has hardly gotten 75 views since it started. Even still I’d like some input wether you are a current college student, alumni, or looking into joining a college yourself.

What three major things would/do you look for in a college when trying to decide which one to attend? Leave a comment with your answer!

Geminid Meteor Shower

Apparently Dec 13th and 14th will be the best times ever to see the Geminid meteors. Supposedly one of the most beautiful meteor showers to see, ironically during my favorite time of the year! According to what I have read through the best time is most likely tonight around 12:10pm EST and NASA suggests to be away from the ‘light pollution’ of the city and to bring warm blankets and drinks! Supposedly we can expect to see 100 per hour in our part of the US (roughly 2 per minute, so it should be easy to catch) and you don’t even need a telescope. NASA is calling it the best show of the year, so if your interested, stay up!

Investing: So many ways to accomplish it, yet so few do?

One thing that has been bothering me lately is that throughout my last few classes I have learned my fair share about different investment opportunities. Now I know everyone doesn’t get pushed into this kind of information in their college careers but being a business admin major its part of my future career. However, one thing I cannot understand is that through all the different investment methods people have at their finger tips, very few people actually invest their money. Now I am not talking about investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into risky ventures. I’m only talking about small investments into mutual funds or other types of investments. Is life so tough that people cannot even set aside 10% of their earnings into some kind of investment and keep that up for 10 years or so? I understand that not everyone can spare tons of money every month, but 10% is not that much. We spend more than that on random unneeded activities or apparel, you can deny it if you want, but its true. I know some people later in life just don’t really have the chance to invest because they are A) in a habit of spending their money the way they do now, B) they simply only make just enough money to pay for bills and the normal necessities. However, for the younger generations its absolutely absurd to not invest in SOMETHING. Everyone that knows how to properly use a computer has access to so much information now a days that its incredible the things you can learn if you just put the time in. I guess to each his own though, but seriously if your not currently investing your money at all or have not ever considered it…you might wanna think again.

Christmas, a time for fun and family!

I know not everyone has the ability to be with their entire family for the holidays (myself included) but I just wanted to say that just because you cant be with everyone doesn’t mean you can’t have an amazing holiday. Just enjoy the people you get to be with and remember what matters, family and fun. I know personally there is no where I would rather be than here with Kasey.

Tiger Woods cheated! ENOUGH ALREADY!

Unless your a person who completely ignores the television…and for that matter all streams of media period, then you have seen the flood of media noise about Tiger and his many mistresses. One thing that really bothers me is the fact that when he media gets a hold of a story like this, not only do they frenzy on it and analyze it down to every single detail, but it seems as if its absolutely impossible to find out any information about any other stories. Now don’t get me wrong, I absolutely hate our media in almost every aspect. I dont care if its CNN or FOX, I just cant stand the fear mongering. But when I want my own dose of crap from either of them then I expect to be able to flip to their channel and get some decent information on multiple topics. After all we live in the information age, and I am a chronic information junky.

The sad thing is that now and probably for the next week or more the only thing you will be able to hear on the television news channels is the Tiger scandal(s). Honestly, its not the first time we have seen a highly held athlete crash to the ground from the media revelations of his private life. Seriously though, we get it. He cheated on his wife and he is a terrible person. He constantly had adds and interviews talking about how great it was to be a father and a husband when the entire time he was whoring around with random women. So in my eyes, that directly makes him a phony and a hypocrite as well. And one cannot deny that now that he is ‘indefinitely’ taking a break golf…it will never be the same.

Video Game Awards, the holy grail.

All that aside, it was really great to immerse myself into television tonight after finally being free of finals and watch something other than Tiger. The VGA’s (Video Game Awards) were absolutely fantastic. It was really nice to see the Game of the Year go to something OTHER than Modern Warfare 2. I know the game is absolutely amazing to its fan base, and yes even I have it for xbox 360, but I believe other games *cough* Assassin’s Creed II *cough* deserved the award much more. So even tho my personal favorite didn’t I have much respect for the winner, Uncharted 2. We saw some great first looks and world premieres from some fantastic celebrities and its obvious that 2010 is going to be a FANTASTIC year for gaming.

Along with posting on this blog pretty excessively along with twitter, I am also going to add on a little extra info. Each Saturday I am going to give a list of personal likes and dislikes from that week.

Faltan tan pocos días para que empiece diciembre, un mes algo incierto para mí ya que no sé aun si podré pasar Navidad y Año Nuevo junto a mi familia y Sonny ε-(；-ω-｀A) ﾌｩ… estoy tratando de agotar todas las posibilidades existentes para poder estar ese día en casa y no en la oficina.

Esta clase de situaciones además de generarme un estrés innecesario hace que cada vez odie más mi actual trabajo *sigh*.

Pero no tengo ganas de hablar del trabajo o quejarme (aunque tengo mucho que decir al respecto) ahora prefiero concentrarme en la idea de que pronto es Navidad y que es tiempo de hacer compras (o´∀｀o):.*メﾟ::リ.｡:ク..*.リﾟ:..(o´∀｀o)

Sonny dice que quiere ropa y como es prácticamente nuestra primera Navidad juntos quiero que reciba cosas que de verdad le van a gustar. Así que la única forma de estar segura que le daré algo que llene sus expectativas en cuanto a presentes de Navidad es simplemente preguntándole. He decidido que en esta ocasión será de esta forma ya que aún no conozco sus gustos del todo y no me gustaría darle algo que no estoy segura si le agradará (；´艸｀)ぁぁぁ

Si hay algo que me encanta son las mascarillas faciales y Bihada Ichizoku tiene de las mejores. Hace no mucho lanzaron un set de edición limitada ya que la línea acaba de cumplir 3 años, ¡definitivamente debo tenerlo! ＼（○＾ω＾○）／

Es una marca sur coreana dedicada al diseño y producción de artículos de escritorio. Sus ilustraciones son simplemente hermosas (人´∀｀)．☆．。．:* el año pasado conseguí la agenda que lanzaron para el 2009 y este año lanzan diarios. Especialmente me gustó mucho el de color púrpura que es precisamente el que quiero para mí.

He estado queriendo esto por mucho tiempo σ(●´з｀). Este lanzamiento es relativamente nuevo y lo quiero-quiero-quiero. Colecciono perfumes (DYNK, Nina Ricci, Carolina Herrera, Victoria’s Secret, etc) y tenerlos sería la adición perfecta :3

Polo ancho Beccgirl

Hace mucho tiempo encontré un polo con un diseño similar sólo que muy señido, pensé en comprarlo pese a que no estaba del todo convencida de si me quedaría bien, decidí dejarlo ir pensando que no volvería a encontrar un diseño parecido, pero este es mucho mejor, podría decirse que es su versión perfecta para mí ヾ(´▽｀*;)ゝ” ¡lo quiero!

Algunas otras opciones que consideré fueron los sets de barniz de Anna Sui que no logré conseguir para mi cumpleaños, lo que más me atrae de esos sets es que huele a rosas. El problema es que el envío por esos dos productos hace que sea costoso el adquirirlo ｡･ﾟﾟ･(>д<;)･ﾟﾟ･｡ ﾋｨｯ *sigh*

Y eso es todo, ya es hora de que vaya a dormir, manaña también trabajo. Oyasumi ^^/

La semana pasada fue una semana para preocuparse, deprimirse y amanecerse.

Preocuparse porque una de la chicas del lugar donde trabajo renunció. Y eso qué diablos debería importarme, ¿verdad? a fin de cuentas es una situación muy ajena a mí. Eso pensé. Hasta que la jefa pensó en mí como el f*ckin’ potencial reemplazo gracias a las sugerencias de mis muy consideradas compañeras de trabajo ε-(；-ω-｀A) ﾌｩ….

No debería quejarme mucho por el trabajo que tengo. Trabajo un día menos de lo usualmente aceptado y gano igual que las que trabajan más días que yo.

Sin embargo no por ello voy a aceptar ser quien tenga que recibir los horarios horribles que sobren y que nadie quiere tomar -_-.

El turno de los sábados en la noche quedó sin alguien a cargo, todas en el trabajo desde luego huyeron de la imposición ofrecimento. Precisamente porque yo no estoy todos los días en la oficina es que fuí una de las últimas en enterarme y en negarse *sigh*. Cuando llegué el martes a la oficina ya habían tomado por un hecho un “sí” de mi parte ;_; y cambiaron uno de mis turnos.

Estaba al borde de la depresión ｬﾀﾞ((o(；□；`)o))ｬﾀﾞ. Pese a que ya todo estaba decidido no podía realmente asimilar el trabajar los sábados en la noche cuando tengo a alguien que está esperando mi llegada a casa. No era precisamente por mí que me afectaba toda la situación sino por Sonny. Sabía que decirle que no llegaría a casa el sábado lo iba a deprimir y por ello decidí no contarle nada de lo que estaba pasando en mi trabajo.

Amanecerse, pues adicionalmente una amiga me pidió que le ayudara a traducir unos textos, y no me pude negar porque le debía un favor *sigh* así que toda la semana estuve hasta muy tarde friendome los ojos frente al monitor sin poder concentrarme al 100% en el documento, no mientras tenía en mente que la próxima semana iba a trabajar con un nuevo horario.

Ya que en el trabajo no había aparentemente una muestra de misericordia hacia mí ORZ… Decidí buscar candidatos por mi cuenta, ya que lo único que podía devolver las cosas a su normalidad era encontrar alguien interesado en sufrir trabajar en ese horario. Publiqué anuncios gratuitos en Internet y como no había ninguna respuesta de la desesperación consideré hasta pagar anuncios en diarios y otros medios xD. Algunos amigos trataron de ayudarme a buscar personas y cuando parecía que por fin encontraba a alguien que aceptaría, se desanimaba.

La semana estaba acabándose al igual que mis esperanzas. Para el día sábado ya estaba completamente resignada. Aún no le había dicho nada a Sonny porque lo último que quería es ver su cara de velorio.

Ese mismo día, recibo una llamada de la jefa.

Jefa: *en un tono animoso* ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo va todo? ^^

Yo: (Supuestamente) Bien (_　_|||)

 Jefa: Te cuento que ya encontramos un reemplazo.

Yo: Σ(゜ロ゜;)!! *trata de contener la emoción* Ya veo…

Jefa: Va a empezar a trabajar a partir de la próxima semana así que no tendrás que tomar ese turno.

Yo: Entiendo *en éxtasis* +.ｄ(･∀・*)♪ﾟ+.ﾟ

Jefa: No dije nada hasta ahora porque aún no era seguro que aceptara pero ya lo comprometí así que no hay forma de que se niegue.

Yo: Claro…（*´▽`*)

Jefa: Bueno, eso es todo. Avísale a las demás chicas ya que todavía no se los he comunicado.

Yo: Desde luego (*･ω･)(｡｡*)ぅん

Jefa: Estamos en contacto, bye~.

Terminada la llamada… lo primero que hice fue respirar (con tranquilidad), sonreir y acto seguido llamar a Sonny para desahogar y contarle sobre mi pesadilla de una semana.

Lo mismo de todos lo años sólo que más grande y con más otakus.

Fuí por dos motivos: Comer y ver los fuegos artificiales.

Cuando llegué con Sonny había demasiada gente, no se podía si quiera aproximarse a los stands de comida por lo atiborrado de gente que estaban.

A Sonny le incomodó por el cambio drástico del panorama. Para él el matsuri debía ser como el que vivió hace 15 años: Gente nikkei en su mayoría, ambiente tranquilo, abuelos bebiendo sake y no cerveza Cuzqueña (!), sin conciertos de música de j-pop o de anime, ni gente haciendo cosplay o algo parecido*lol*

Sonny: *mira a una chica que pasa por su costado* Por favor, dime que lleva algo debajo del polo.

Yo: Parece que no ·_·

Sonny: Dios…

Yo: *trata de mirar mejor* Sí, tiene un short, pero muy pequeño *gotas*

Por ahí escuché comentarios de varias obaasan diciendo que era lamentable que ya no se vean jóvenes nikkei cargando el mikoshi.

Sonny y yo estabamos dispuestos a quedarnos hasta la presentación de Eizah para ver a mi amiga Aki pero eso fue imposible dado que el coliseo estaba lleno de gente y nosotros muy cansados.

No fuimos para antes del hanabi, lástima que los fuegos artificiales no se ven desde nuestra casa aunque él me aseguró que desde la de sus papás es bastante visible o_o.

[ Situaciones anti estrés acontecidas a lo largo de los últimos dos meses :3 ]

- Ir al concierto de Depeche Mode con mis dos hermanos y reconocer que estamos todos viejos.

- Ir al concierto de Pet Shop Boys y bailar (como todos los que estaban presentes) sin poder evitarlo.

- Mudarme a un departamente propio con Sonny.

- Concluir el nivel 7 básico de japonés

- Empezar el nivel 8 básico de japonés *smirks* 

- Cena en Edo con Sonny y su papá.

- Almuerzo en casa de la familia de Sonny.

- Ir hasta el Barrio Chino a comprar exclusivamente té verde y jabones de lychee.

- Comprar cosas para el departamento con Sonny.

- Ir a McDonald’s con Sonny a comprar Cajitas Feliz en la madrugada para coleccionar los peluches que vienen de regalo :3

- Comprar cosas kawaii por el simple hecho de que me hacen sonreir.

- Almorzar con Lela, Astrid y Eliana en Casa de Comida China para celebrar la inuaguración de Asianik.
