Just watched the video and all  I can say is FI-NA-LLY, theres so much more substance in this video compared to Beyoncé’s others. In fact really and truly she did not need Lady Gaga to be on this song at all, If anything all it did was take away from the video. It could be because Gaga’s style was so downplayed and Beyoncé’s was how can I put it, ON POINT! It kind of made her look like an extra.

So yeah great video, nothing breakthrough, but it’s very interesting to watch and feel’s very close to the quality we got with the B’Day Album. I LOVED the swimsuit intro, so typical B she know’s how to strut, and the Army General outfit. FIYAH!!

In 1974, Rolling Stone music journalist Jon Landau boosted a then little known musician’s career by declaring, “I have seen the future of rock and roll, and its name is Bruce Springsteen”. Fast forward to 2009 and the future of rock and roll isn’t a person. It’s not even a band. It’s an online music service called Spotify. It isn’t just a game changer for the music industry. It’s a first glimpse of the future of all home entertainment.

Spotify is a music streaming service without the need to buy songs to listen to them. It’s basically Apple’s iTunes, except it’s free. 4 million songs are available and it’s legal since major music labels - Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music – are shareholders. Spotify is an attempt to beat music piracy and it seems to be working.

There is a catch. Australia doesn’t have access to Spotify’s delights yet. The UK, France, Spain, Finland, Norway and Sweden are the current lucky countries. The USA and China will soon have access. However, it’s easy to bypass this tricky geographical problem.

I’ve been using Spotify and it‘s terribly addictive. Remember when you used to make mix tapes for friends, lovers and friends you desperately hoped would be your lover? Spotify allows you to build music playlists and share them with friends/lovers/others who can marvel at your impeccable taste in music. Playlist links can be sent via Twitter and/or Facebook. You can even allow friends to add or delete songs on shared playlists. Recently, Apple approved an application allowing Spotify music to stream directly to iPhones.

The future is now. Some luddites will cling to vinyl records. Some may even persist with CDs. But the majority will listen to music this way once it goes mass market. To be commercially viable, it’s likely all users will eventually have to subscribe. Reliability, convenience and legality means most won’t begrudge paying the approximate $20 monthly subscription Spotify’s premium service costs. I’d certainly subscribe if it was available in Australia.

We won’t own music but will be able to listen to anything any time we want. Movies will be next. And, if Rupert Murdoch and rivals are able to build a similar single point user friendly ‘pick and mix’ delivery system offering a compilation of their individual content, people may be willing to pay for online news. Unfortunately News Corp’s own foray into a similar music system – MySpace Music – is frustratingly clunky so you have to wonder whether they could build a seamless and intuitive integrated online news service that people would be willing to pay for.

However, if the notoriously antagonistic music labels can work together to sell their collective wares surely media companies can see sense in a little collaboration? Better to get a little money from most readers than no money from all.

In den letzten Monaten hat die 28-jährige Powerlady aus den USA, an dem Comeback-Album von Whitney Houston mitgeschrieben und wirkte nebenbei noch auf dem neuen Album von Jay-Z als Feature-Artist mit.  Sie hat aber auch an ihrer Musikkarriere gebastelt und das Ergebnis ist brandneues Album – hier ist das Video zu der Single „Doesn’t mean Anything“, welche am 20.11. veröffentlicht wird:

Alicia Keys hat sich wieder weiterentwickelt – die neue CD soll schlagzeug-lastiger sein und auch der Entstehungsprozess ihrer Musik ist diesmal wohl anders gewesen, wie sie in einem Interview verrät: „Zum ersten Mal in meiner Karriere habe ich begriffen, wie der kreative Prozess funktioniert, indem ich mich von allen Zwängen befreit habe. Die Herangehensweise war bei diesem Album eine völlig andere als zuvor. Ich hab mich nicht einfach in ein Studio zurückgezogen und habe mich auch nicht von irgendwelchen Deadlines negativ beeinflussen lassen, die jeglichen kreativen Geist behindern.“

Ich muss ehrlich sagen, dass mir „Doesn’t mean Anything“ vom Beat und der Melodie her gut gefällt, aber der Song wirkt für mich alles in allem eher platt. Woran das liegt kann ich irgendwie schwer beschreiben und obwohl ich wirklich schon seit ihrem Debüt im Jahr 2001 völlig begeistert von Alicia’s Stimme und Songs war, hat mir ihr letztes Album „As I am“ schon ziemlich „soft“ und etwas unkreativ gewirkt, so nach dem Motto – alles schon gehört – und ob sich das bei dieser CD geändert, bleibt abzuwarten. Ich hoffe sehr, dass die anderen Tracks auf dem Album wieder etwas mehr nach der „alten“ Alicia klingen!

Nach ihrer erfolgreiche (und etwas skandalösen) „Circus“-Tour meldet sich Britney Spears mit einer neuen Single zurück. „3“ heißt der Song, der aber nicht nur wegen der Lyrics für Furore sorgt, sondern viel mehr wegen dem heißen Musikvideo!

A storm sprang up this week around reports that, due to disagreements between Apple (s aapl) and Sony BMG (s sne), the upcoming Michael Jackson album “This Is It” — a tie-in to the movie of the same name and bound to be a sales success — would not be available on iTunes, the world’s biggest digital music provider.

When Michael Jackson tragically died in late June, sales of his music on iTunes sky-rocketed. A day after he died, eight of the 10 top-selling albums were from Michael Jackson. Eight of the 10 top-selling music videos, too. Five of the 10 top-selling singles were also from Jackson. It was a trend that would continue for weeks. With interest in (and thirst for) Michael Jackson music and video at an all-time high, online music vendors have a vested interest in the new album.

So it came as something of a surprise when, two days ago, news broke that iTunes was to be denied the chance to sell the upcoming album. Paul Reskinoff reported that, according to confidential information leaked to Digital Music News, Sony BMG and the Jackson Estate were insisting downloads could only occur within the constraints of a bundled, full album. So, if a customer wanted just one song from “This Is It,” they’d be forced to buy and download the entire album to get it. Apple’s policy, on the other hand, is well established in these matters; it insists on making individual tracks available for purchase and download. Hence the current standoff.

In his MediaMemo column on All Things Digital, Peter Kafka writes:

…the story is a familiar one, because it’s a longstanding dispute between Apple (AAPL) and the music business. The industry, for both financial and artistic reasons, has tried to keep music bundled together, while Apple insists on selling it a la carte.

Apple usually wins these disputes: Even the stubborn iconoclasts in Radiohead eventually bowed to Steve Jobs’s will and turned their precious albums into individual songs.

Lois Najarian, Sony’s Senior Vice President of Publicity yesterday told Wired.com:

I’m happy to report that… Michael Jackson’s This Is It album will indeed be for sale on iTunes Oct. 27. I don’t have much more information to impart other than that right now, but suffice [it] to say fans will be able to purchase it there.

It was always unlikely Apple would have been blocked from selling the new album — the contract Apple has with Sony BMG to distribute its catalogue of music would see to that. So the question now is not if the album will be sold on iTunes, but how? Najarian doesn’t say, adding only that Apple and Sony BMG are “working on that now.”

Will Sony acquiesce to Apple’s rules, or, controversially, could we see Apple agree to the album-bundling method? It’s not impossible, given how well this release is expected to sell; Apple might be prepared to make an exception to its own (usually immutable) rules in favor of meeting the guaranteed demand of its iTunes customers. Plus, I’m sure the sales revenue it generates will not be unwelcome, either.

Whether temporarily or otherwise, if Apple does indeed make an exception and bow to Sony’s wishes, it’s a decision sure to cause frustration and anger amongst iTunes customers. And you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll be hearing from some pretty miffed artists unhappy they weren’t afforded the same special treatment as the late, great, King of Pop.

When Dada.net, a music site run by a joint venture between major label Sony BMG and Italian mobile-entertainment company Dada, first launched, $9.99 got you 15 “tokens” that could be redeemed for ringtones or MP3s.

Unfortunately, it offered only songs from Sony BMG, as other download services with a much larger selection–notably Amazon.com and Apple’s iTunes–began to offer DRM-free downloads for a buck or less.

The service now has a free tier that offers unlimited streaming, and unlike other free streaming services such as Grooveshark or Spotify, you also get three free MP3 downloads per month. I tested it with a download of Beck’s “Bolero”, and everything seems legit–you do have to register with a valid e-mail address, but you aren’t forced to give a credit card number to get your free service, as with eMusic.

The selection still has some gaping holes–no Led Zeppelin or Beatles, for example–but some non-Sony artists like Pink Floyd and Radiohead (the bulk of whose recordings are owned by EMI) are represented with a full complement of recordings, including obscure live albums and EPs. And, of course, Sony artists like Kings of Leon are fully represented. The free tier is definitely worth checking out, if you can’t find a song you’re looking for at one of the other free streaming services.

As far as the paid tier goes, I still think that it’s a bad deal, at $9.99 a month, for 15 free MP3s (the first month, you get 25). You can get DRM-free downloads for about the same price, with no monthly subscription fee, from many other sources. Another possible deterrent: Dada has been accused of using questionable tactics to attract and retain subscribers. I haven’t experienced any problems, and the most recent complaints date from 2006, but the reports are common enough that I have to suggest caution.

Si vives en uno de los países donde Spotify es de acceso totalmente gratuito como España quizás hayas oído hablar ya de este reproductor. Yo creo que si por algo está triunfando Spotify es porque al igual que YouTube es gratuito e incluso instantáneo.

Poner el modo premium como única vía de acceso sería como pedir a todos los que bajamos música compartida en P2P como Ares o eMule nos registrasemos en iTunes y tuviéramos que pagar por cada descarga.

Creo que pagar por una canción no debería ser obligatorio como pretenden la SGAE, sino como una opción tipo “donativo” si tal disco o canción nos ha gustado mucho.

Al fin y al cabo los cantantes donde realmente se forran son en las giras dando conciertos. Una de las escusas donde se refugia la SGAE esque entonces dejarían en paro a empresas encargadas de fabricar las cajas, CDs y libretos con carátulas y todos los elementos que componen el comprar un soporte físico. Y tienen razón, pero por esa regla de tres aún estaríamos en plena revolución industrial de hace dos siglos, y esque hay que irse adaptando a los tiempos. Y el tiempo de Internet viene para quedarse y ser cada vez un medio de comunicación más ameno con todos.

Sí reconozco que tal vez afectaría a la calidad de muchas canciones ya que sin haber una industria comercial como las discográficas dejándose los billetes para que sus artistas graben en el mejor estudio, con los mejores compositores y con los mejores efectos de audio sería todo mucho más amateur, dicho de otra forma, menos profesional. Por lo que tampoco estoy totalmente en contra de las discográficas, sólo opino que no deben ser tan abusivas, deben cambiar su estrategia y con el canon digital ya tienen suficiente como para venir a prohibirnos el P2P como González-Sinde, Ministra de Cultura, pretende.

Para el usuario común al fin y al cabo Spotify sólo es una puerta para conocer más música y bajártela después en un programa P2P como Ares o eMule, por lo que la estrategia que tienen las discográficas con este medio gratuito simplemente son las ganancias por la publicidad que cada cierto tiempo nos muestra el programa ya que el chollo de forrarse vendiendo discos en soporte físico se les está acabando. Pero si con esta cosa las discográficas son felices pues me alegro, parece que empiezan a encontrar su sitio.

La verdad esque Spotify es un excelente programa.

Max Herre – der gut aussehende und smarte Musiker aus Stuttgart hat wieder ein Album produziert. „Ein geschenkter Tag“ ist der Titel der neuen Scheibe und Max hat sich verändert und sein Sound mit ihm!

Meine Mission des heutigen Tages -> gönne dir nach langer Zeit wieder etwas Gutes und besorge dir ein paar neue CDs! Ja, und so ging’s los auf die Mariahilfer Straße. Ich ließ mir Zeit und häufte einige CDs an, bei denen ich überlegt habe, sie zu kaufen.  Da ich aber grundsätzlich nichts ohne ein kurzes Probehören kaufe, habe ich auch in den neuen Longplayer von Max Herre, dem Ex von Joy Denalane by the way, im Geschäft rein gehört. Die erste Singleauskopplung wird im Moment auf MTV und Co. ständig gespielt, aber hier noch mal für alle, die den Song noch nicht kennen:

Na ja, also ich kannte die Single schon und sie überzeugte mich nicht wirklich. Ich dachte, dass es vielleicht einer dieser Songs, der je länger und öfter man ihn hört, besser wird. Bei dem Lied von Max hat das irgendwie bei mir nicht so geklappt. Ich kann mit dem Lied nichts anfangen. Eigentlich kann ich es nicht ausstehen, um vollkommen ehrlich zu sein. Es mag schon sein, dass sich Max weiterentwickelt hat, Neues ausprobieren wollte, seinen Sound erweitert und revolutioniert hat, aber gelungen ist ihm das nicht wirklich, wie ich finde. Trotzdem wollte ich mir das Album kurz anhören, mir ein eigenes Bild davon machen. Die meisten Songs sind ruhig, langsam, fast schon zu soft, meiner Meinung nach. „Weg von hier“ und „Wir haben’s gesehen“ sind ganz okay, aber eben nur okay. Und okay, ist einfach nicht was ich von Max Herre erwartet hätte. Leider. Das Album wird also nicht in meine Sammlung aufgenommen, aber für alle denen die CD gefällt – Max Herre kommt am 4.11 nach Wien (Porgy&Bess)!

Mir bleibt nichts anderes übrig als in Erinnerungen an den „alten“ Max Herre zu schwelgen!

Heute war es wieder soweit – die Amadeus Awards wurden verliehen und die österreichische Musikszene hat allen Grund zu feiern. Es galt nicht nur das 10te Jubiläum und die heimischen KünstlerInnen selbst zu zelebrieren, sondern auch ein komplett neues, frisches “Outfit” der Austrian Music Awards!

Dieses Jahr bestimmten endlich die MusikliebhaberInnen selbst, wer nun einen der begehrten Amadeus-Awards erhält und wer nicht. Eine Fachjury wählte lediglich die Nominierten in den verschiedenen Genres aus. Damit das Ganze entwas anschaulicher ist – hier ist eine Auflistung der neuen Kategorien beim Amadeus 09 und den jeweiligen Gewinnern:

Ich sah mir die Awards bei Puls4 an und war sehr gespannt, wer gewinnen wird und wie die Live-Auftritte der KünstlerInnen sein würden. Teilweise bin ich allerdings ziemlich enttäuscht von der Show. Erstens fand ich Michael Ostrowski, den Moderator, leider nicht wirklich witzig. Die Performance und die Art des Moderierens des Schauspielers, bekannt aus der glorreichen Komödie „Nacktschnecken“, wirkte für mich eher sehr steif, einstudiert und ja, einfach nicht komisch. Aber egal…
Zweitens, war ich enttäuscht von der Produktion der großen Verleihungsshow. Während die LaudatorInnen sprachen konnte man auch gleichzeitig einige Tischgespräche im Publikum mithören. Außerdem wurden die glücklichen Gewinner oft noch vor dem Ende ihrer Dankesrede mit der Musik übertönt, also quasi von der Bühne verdrängt. Manchmal zeigte man Erbarmen und schaltete die Musik wieder aus, was nicht nur die KünstlerInnen verwirrte, sondern der Show einen Touch von Unprofessionalität verleihte.

Na ja, trotzdem freut es mich zum Beispiel sehr, dass „Bunny Lake“(super Auftritt, by the way!), „Soap & Skin“ und „Texta“ gewonnen haben, die ich beim Online-Voting gewählt habe. In den nächsten Tagen werden bestimmt viele Videos der Award-Show, die dieses Jahr im Museumsquartier stattfand, bei YouTube auftauchen, im Moment gibt es nur dieses online – der Auftritt von „The Sorrow“:

“Ja, Panik“, “Gustav“, “Clara Luzia“, “Kamp & Whizz Vienna“, “Waxolutionists“, “Fatima Spar & The Freedom Fries” & “I am Cereals” sind leider leer ausgegangen – ich bin mir aber sicher, dass sie alle nichtsdestotrotz bei der After-Showparty ordentlich feiern werden und vielleicht wird’s ja im nächsten Jahr klappen!

Rumänisches Blut in den Adern, eine große Berliner Schnauze, ein rollendes RRRR, heiße Kurven, eine starke Stimme, ein enormes Talent und jede Menge Humor, ja, all das vereint das neue Sternchen in sich – die Rede ist von MISS PLATNUM!!!

Mit acht Jahren zog Ruth Maria Renner mit ihren Eltern nach Deutschland. In der Schule kämpfte sie sich erfolgreich durch, galt sogar als Streberin, aber ihr Herz schlug für die Musik. Nach jahrelangen Gesangscoaching bei Jocelyn B. Smith, einer US-Jazz-Sängerin, und einigen Background-Singing-Jobs produzierte Miss Platnum 2007 ihr erstes Album. Der erhoffte Durchbruch in Deutschland mit dieser CD blieb aber aus, dafür machte sie sich in ihrer Heimat, Rumänien, einen Namen. Zwei Singles wurden aus dem Albumdebüt „Chefa“ veröffentlicht. Mit der witzigen Nummer „Give me the Food”, einem Appell an unsere im Schlankheitswahn befindende Gesellschaft, versuchte sich Miss Platnum Gehör zu verschaffen.

Die zweite Single aus dem ersten Miss Platnum’s Longplayer bei der sich Peter Fox nicht nehmen ließ mit zu grooven, war „Come Marry Me“:

Miss Platnum verkraftete den Misserfolg ihrer „Chefa“-CD nur schwer, tröstete sich mit Alkohol und Drogen, aber irgendwann spuckte sie in die Hände und wollte es der Welt zeigen. Sie wusste was in ihr steckt – Balkan Beats, Hip Hop, R’n’B und Folk mit einer explosionsartigen Stimme verbinden zu können. Jetzt ist ihr zweites Album mit dem Namen „The Sweetest Hangover“ seit Anfang September endlich draußen und die erste Single haut mich vom Hocker. Bei dem Video zu „She moved in“ hatte auch Peter Fox wieder seine Hände im Spiel.

Motor.de beschreibt Miss Platnum als eine „gelungene Musikglobalisierung“ und mich verzaubert diese starke Frau mit ihrem ungebrochenen Willen der Musikwelt zu zeigen, wo der Hammer hängt. Manche meinen sie wäre zu glatt, ja sogar, zu unrevolutionär, aber ich stehe auf diese Power-Frau und kann von ihr nicht genug kriegen!

EDIT: Anscheinend kann man das “She moved in”-Video nicht in Blogs einbetten, sorry! Dann bleibt euch nichts anderes übrig, als es auf YouTube anzusehen. Einfach in die Mitte des Videos klicken und los geht’s!

Der Sommer ist vorbei, der Herbst steht vor der Tür und Pearl Jam klopft auch wieder an und zwar mit einer heißen Scheibe in der Hand – „Backspacer“!

Ehrlich gesagt, glaube ich kaum, dass es noch Leute da draußen gibt, die Pearl Jam nicht kennen, aber ich stelle sie zur Sicherheit trotzdem kurz vor. Die Grunge-Band, aus Seattle, wurde Anfang der 90er gegründet. In der sogenannten Grunge-Ära zählten sie mit Bands wie Nirvana zu den Superstars. Ihr Album „Ten“ verkaufte sich 1992 weltweit mehr als 9 Millionen Mal. Nach ein paar Alben, die mehr oder weniger erfolgreich waren (in den USA mehr als hier in Europa) und aufgrund vieler Nebenprojekte der Bandmitglieder in den darauf folgenden Jahren, wird es Ende der 90er ungewöhnlich ruhig um Pearl Jam. Gerüchte um Trennung und Auflösung der Band begannen zu kursieren, trotzdem war und ist das Interesse der Grunge-Fans an Pearl Jam ungebrochen. Die Sehnsucht nach einem neuen Album war bei mir jedenfalls groß und jetzt liefern die Rocker endlich einen neuen Longplayer ab, der es in sich hat! Das erste Schmankerl ist die Single „The Fixer“. Pearl Jam hat auch endlich wieder ein Musikclip produziert, nach einer ewig langen Musikvideo-Pause:

Die neue Scheibe wird „Backspacer“ heißen und von der Band nach der Trennung vom Major Sony BMG in den USA selbst vertrieben. In Europa arbeiten Pear Jam mit Universal/Island Records zusammen. Am 21.September erscheint die neue CD und wird aus 11 Tracks bestehen:

Das Making Of Backspacer-Video das schon vor gut zwei Wochen auf YouTube aufgetaucht ist, sollte ich euch auch nicht vorenthalten:

Das geniale an dem neuen Album ist allerdings die brandneue eBridge-Applikation. Diese erlaubt das Downloaden zweier Live-Songs der amerikanischen Band nach dem Kauf der CD. Elf US-Shows aus den Jahren 2005, 2006 und 2008 stehen als Audio-Download zur Verfügung. Nachdem man „Backspacer“ gekauft hat, muss man anscheinend, die CD nur in den Laptop oder PC einlegen und bekommt dann einen Code mit dem die Live-Songs heruntergeladen werden können. Es funktioniert übrigens auch, wenn man das Album bei iTunes kauft. Dabei ist es völlig egal ob man die Limited Edt. Oder Standard CD erwirbt. Das sind also fast 5 Stunden an extra Bonus-Material – der Wahnsinn!

Das neue „Backspacer“-Album ist also mit einem Überraschungsei Deluxe zu vergleichen. Pearl Jam sind wieder zurück – endlich und die Vorfreude auf diese New-Media-CD ist enorm…bei mir jedenfalls!

EDIT: Am 17.9. findet eine Pearl Jam-Release-Party im U4 (Wien) statt! Unbedingt hinschauen und die Veröffentlichung der neuen CD gebührend feiern!

CBS Radio and Yahoo! received a victory in court as a New York apellate judge upheld their side in a court battle that began in 2001. Sony BMG, the losing party in the case, has now racked up their second failure against Yahoo! You see, this case was their appeal after losing the original court case in 2007.

The sticking point has always been interactivity. The judge ruled — correctly, I think — that Yahoo!’s LaunchCast service does not meet the requirements for the royalties in question. For that to be the case, people would have to be able to program the service to play particular songs like an mp3 player. Emma Woolacot over at TG Daily explains:

Launchcast allows users to create a personalized ‘radio station’, playing their favourite musical genres. But, said judge Richard Wesley, “This degree of control is no different from a traditional radio listener expressing a preference for a country music station over a classic rock station.”

For Yahoo!, this means a multimillion dollar savings — not inconsiderable, especially in these belt tightening times. It also is an encouraging sign as we watch the recording industry madly flail about attempting to squeeze revenue from any possible interpretation of law.  It does not mean a lack of royalties altogether, the service will still have to pay standard licensing fees to SoundExchange, the industry-sponsored non-profit that collects musicians’ royalties.
