I know I’m going on about Apple at the moment, but they do seem to be in my life a lot for all sorts

I know I’m going on about Apple at the moment, but they do seem to be in my life a lot for all sorts of reasons.

I read today on Brand Channel that Sony are trying to become a ‘lifestyle’ brand alongside Apple. In the article Sony’s Executive VP Kazuo Hirai said that if they can offer movie downloads, game downloads and other entertainment, this would be a point of difference that is not available anywhere else.

What?

Sony are officially a Kevin Roberts Lovemark. One of those brands that we love over and above all reason. But this is evidence to me that they have totally lost the plot and are not just following the (Apple) market leaders, but they are a mile or two behind. Sony, when they launched the Walkman, created and defined a sector from scratch with the world’s smallest cassette player.

Apple’s iPod then came and took the whole sector from them, when they redefined the portable media player sector.

Sony have 33 million PlayStation users across the world, all of them plugged in to a wired or wifi’d world. It would seem a far stronger bet to build on this as a point of differentiation than trying to do it through their Bravia TV, Cyber shot cameras and e-readers, which are all a bit ‘me-too’ at best.

If they created a rental or fractional ownership system for games, entertainment, movies and music via the PS3, they would be onto a far more differentiatable (if there is such a word) product and one that has 33 million headstarts.

Otherwise for me, its Apple all the way.

I can imagine Apple launching a wifi TV – they already have a device that slings your picture from your mac to your TV, a wifi camera (that will be the iPhone 3gs then) and you can already read books on the iPod Touch/iPhone.

Sony have become a follower. They used to be radical. Lovemarks do radical things. Sony need to do something radical again, or they are in danger of us falling out of love with them little by little.

SoBe – Thrillicious – NAY I know Superbowl commercials often break the normal practices

SoBe – Thrillicious – NAY

I know Superbowl commercials often break the normal practices of advertising, but what is this commercial? I remember watching it come on during the game in 2008 and looking around the room at confused faces expressing something along the lines of, “Okay…Thriller is always a good song but…what?”

Furthermore:

SoBe’s lizard mascot isn’t recognizable enough to be the main feature of a Superbowl ad. A lot of reactions to this commercial were confusions about why lizards were dancing.

Why do the lizards dance to a song that has dead people (in the real music video) when they’ve just consumed “life water?” That message is unclear.

The punch line at the end: thrillicious. Is that the best they could do? This is the type of pun that comes up the first time you brainstorm a creative idea. And by “you” I really mean everyone. Avoid choosing an idea that everyone is likely to think of. That is an indication that it isn’t creative enough.

The commercial relies too much on “Thriller” to engage people. Again, I know it’s the Superbowl and emphasis is usually either on humor or celebrity cameos, but there’s no real message in this spot to give a reason to anything that happens.

Sony – Bravia – YAY

This is a fantastic commercial with a simple message, a great soundtrack, and stunning visuals. Obviously the decision to film it in San Francisco was perfect for the release of 170,000 bouncy balls.

The use of slow motion captures the elegance and detail of the colors, which echoes the main message at the end. It was also a smart idea to advertise one aspect of televisions- color.

The strategy behind the Bravia campaign was to make consumers walk into the store with Sony in mind. They did this by associating high quality of color with Sony. That way, consumers couldn’t be lead astray to other brands by floor salesmen. By Sony showing consumers Bravia’s “unique selling point,” consumers also knew why they had Sony in their minds.

In the making of the commercial, the creators say this spot is “much more about connecting with people emotionally.” This is the goal of any advertiser, as consumers base decisions off of their emotions. It is important to understand, though, that appealing to emotions doesn’t necessarily mean that commercials like this make people think, “Wow, I feel happy/confident/motivated by this commercial.” The simple “wow” itself says it all, as that is an indicator that something hit them.

In other words, it’s unnecessary for people to be able to articulate the emotions they are feeling. A “wow” can mean a number of things such as “Wow this spot really:

was awesome.

made me like the brand because of its awesome advertising.

made me think.

will stick in my memory.

Always aim for a “wow” moment because it often encompasses multiple emotions at once, and usually generates multiple thinking and or talking points for those who are “wowed.”

Men love their sports! From football-to baseball-to basketball-to hockey– the game is always on at our house! Not to mention Superbowl XLIV in Miami is just around the corner in January, and the Winter Olympics gear up in February 2010. If you want to become Santa’s number one helper EVER, think about replacing that old, tired TV for a great Christmas gift for your hubby.

The 46″ inch size is just right for most modern living rooms–neither too small, nor so big that it would completely dominate the room.

If he is a tech-geek (what man isn’t!) he’ll appreciate the Sony BRAVIA module system. With the Sony DMXWL1 BRAVIA Wireless HD Link (sold separately) you can eliminate all those unslightly cords and cables originating from your home theater system, add up to 5 HD sources and control them all with only one remote.

Want to view the Internet right on your TV? Then add the Sony DMXNV1 Bravia Internet Video Linkto watch news, sports, music and more right from your TV.

Believe me, you can’t go wrong with this HDTV from Sony. Here’s what some people who have already purchased it from Amazon.com have to say about it:

Review by Heero (Mansfield, TX USA)

April 3, 2009

I just received this television. My first impression is great. I’ve been investigating diffrent brands and different models of LCD TV’s for a while. Here is the conclusion I reached and the reasons for purchasing this TV:

* Sony has great models for over $2500. They have great picture but not great enough to compensate for the couple of thousand extra dollars paid. I saw 46XBR6 and 46V5100 next to each other in BB and did not see a significant difference except the price.
* Samsungs have great LCD TVs. But glossy screen would not work for me at all. I have a bright living room where my TV is located. So, if you will have your TV in a bright room, you probably would like to avoid glossy screens like Samsung has. It really reflects a lot almost like a mirror. This was a big deal for me.

Now, my experice with KDL46V5100 is as follows:
It has great picture quality. I did not expect it to be so good at even SD. It is very easy to use. We plugged the TV and started to use it right away. Even user’s manual is just a few pages. Before buying the TV I paid extra attention to the wide angle performance. This TV has about the same view from front and from sides: no changes in color or image quality with angle that I recognized.

I am extremely satisfied with the Amazon delivery. They brought the TV, unpacked it and installed the TV on the stand.

Good TV for good price and good service from Amazon…

GREAT TV

May 19, 2009
By John Difebbo “Flightsim-USAF” (Jacksonville, AR)

I recently purchased the Sony Bravia 46V5100, and wow is all i can say. This is my first HD anything purchase, although i did a ton of research for over a year, im glad i chose this Sony. I also promptly purchased the playstation 3 for the games and blu-ray, along with the HD package from the cable company, and it blows me away. The picture never blurs or anything like that, im a huge NASCAR fan and there is no blurring, no skipping and you never miss a bit of the action, and of course its the fastest sport on TV. With all the HDMI inputs, i dont know what else i can put in there to make it better, theres more than enough room for all the accessories. The screen is what made the difference for me between this Sony and the Samsung of the equivilant. The screen is not as glossy as the samsung, although the bezel is as shiny as the rest, you hardly notice it. The white glove delivery was great, i was notified of every step of the journey for my TV, the delivery guys unloaded it, ops checked it and explained some of the features. The only problem was a “feature” that came with the TV that darkens the screen during dark scenes on a movie or TV show, this problem has been fixed by a software update, found on the Sony support web site. its a very easy fix, just requiring an USB memory stick, or if you dont have one the Sony people will send you one. The update just takes minutes and makes a world of difference. I was a bit nervous about buying a TV online, but i went and checked it out at best buy, and it was about $400 less at amazon than at best buy, so my decision was made for me. Over all its a great tv, and a great price for the size of the TV. Thanks

Buy this one, not the Samsung!

April 11, 2009
By L. Silver “silver212″ (nyc)

I researched 46 inch lcd tv’s for months, and every site recommended the Samsung 550, so I bought it. I’m not a techie, so I’ll just say this: the speakers on all Samsungs are on the bottom of the set, so unless you know how to hook it up to an external sound system, every show will sound like you’re inside a tin can with the lid closed. I sent it back and got the Sony, which is a VAST improvement; the speakers are on the front of the set, where they belong. The picture is sharp, colors saturated and beautiful, it’s easy to navigate. It’s a great TV. Unlike the Samsung, which is incredibly shiny and reflective, the Sony even looks great in my living room. I love it!

You and hubby will have a very Merry Christmas with this under the tree!

Sony Bravia KDL-26L5000, Beautiful picture! ($363.99~$459.00)

Super fine and detailed image quality, fantastic features, and very smooth sound. Very easy to setup and high-def TV looks excellent. If you want the best 26″ LCD, get this Sony model! At the price you may not at first think of this little SONY as a bargain, but wait until you’ve owned if for a month or so. If you have wasted time trying other, less expensive sets, as many of us have, then you will know what I mean by bargain! No doubt there are cheaper LCD HD TVs out there, but you know when you get a Sony that you are going to get good quality. This Bravia series is no exception. The picture quality is astounding, especially when watching sporting events – you can see every face in the crowd.

I don’t have much new to add to a review for this TV other than a simple warning that seems obvious – take a look at this TV at the store before you make your purchase online. When I bought this one I figured a 26 inch would be just perfect for my son, remembering my old “giant” 25 inch screens from the past. However, when this one arrived, it seemed so small. With the HD LCD screen, you really can go a bit bigger than you think. This 26 inch is great but I wish I had gotten just a bit bigger, especially for a TV that’s going to be used in a livingroom area.

It’s size is perfect for the location. The picture sharpness and the sound are excellent for a smaller t.v. It is extremely light and was very easy to set up. This is an excellent choice as a second t.v. for the bedroom or kitchen. DVD’s look even sharper on it than onmy old Trinitron. The remote is easy to use and the various functions easy to perform. Sony Bravia KDL-26L5000 LCD TV was a cinch to hookup. Great resolution with good sound quality. Decided to go with the 26″ inch over 22″ display for our kitchen/breakfast nook, and glad we did. Stunning picture quality.

I bought this for my bedroom last week and am pretty happy with it. I have a 40″ XBR2 in the family room and this model’s picture is surprisingly comparable. I bought it through Amazon for MUCH less than BB or Sears. I do have a couple issues that prevent me from giving it five stars: first, it takes quite a long time for the picture to appear when you turn it on and switching inputs takes even longer than my XBR2. The other peave I have is setting the sleep timer; on most TV’s there’s a dedicated ‘Sleep’ button on the remote. On the S5100 you have to hit the ‘Tools’ button on the remote, select ‘Clock/Timers’, select your sleep time, then press the ‘Menu’ button to clear the on-screen menu. Wow! All-in-all, neither of those are that big of a deal, but the next issue is the one that’s provoking me to call Sony Customer Service. There is a significant amount of noise in the TV’s audio output — especially at low volume. It sounds like the signal is over-modulated, but at higher volume levels it’s not as noticable. I haven’t tried a set of external speakers to see if the noise is still there, but I have tried component, composite, and HDMI inputs all with the same results. Perhaps I’ll update this review with the results of my call to Sony.

UPDATE 5/1: I called Sony about the audio issue; they wanted to send out a technician. I opted to have J&R swap out the TV but the same exact problem exists on the replacement. I guess I’m going to take Sony up on their offer to send someone out. I can’t tolerate this problem considering it is our bedroom TV and is often used at low volume levels.

UPDATE 5/19: I just finished packing up the unit to return to J&R, who have been great BTW! The Sony tech acknowledged the problem and said that Sony tech support would probably tell him to replace the digital audio board, but unless the board has been redesigned he didn’t think it would resolve the problem. Sony Customer Service refused to help in any way; I asked for a refurbished XBR6 (last year’s only 32″ 1080p model) to replace this unit, and they said no. I asked for a discount on a new XBR9, and they said no. As the owner of several Sony products, including a 40″ XBR2 and a 36″ Wega, I am really quite surprised by Sony’s unwillingness to help resolve this issue. My brand loyalty has been shaken, and I will think twice before I buy another Sony product. BTW, I’m looking at the Panasonic and Samsung 1080 32″ models as a replacement.

Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000, Great TV for the money.($419.99~$449.99)

This TV is just what you’d want in a sleek design. The picture is very crisp, great sound, and it hooks up easily with lots of inputs. It works for all viewing and gaming needs. It was really easy to set up right out of the box, and when I turned it on it immediately ran auto set-up, saving a lot of time and hassle. Cable broadcasts in 720p/1080i. So unless you have the room and money for a larger screen, have a Blu-Ray DVD player or are a serious gamer, go with the 720P and save yourself some bread.

It was very easy to set up. Our cable package only has broadcast stations but with this we seem to be able to get the digital versions of a whole lot of basic cable channels. Unfortunately, there’s still nothing on them except reality shows and procedurals reruns, so it just confirmed for us the uselessness of cable TV. It works very well as a PC monitor and we are able to watch Netflix Watch Instantly movies, YouTube videos and TV shows from Hulu or the networks’ sites. We are using Boxee.tv as an interface and that works well. Next up, get an eyeTV so we can use the thing as a DVR.

As of this writing, I couldn’t be more satisfied the picture and sound are both amazing and it’s everything I was expecting and a whole lot more. Word to the wise though, You will need HD service and an HD receiver in order to get the most out of this set in terms of HD programming. I really dig the cinema setting that darkens the picture (This is optional) to replicate a movie theater experience when watching a movie, it’s a pretty cool feature. Sony Bravia KDL-32L5000, great TV under $500.

P.S. If you use the HMD1 imput (3 imputs included), you will get 1080p output. Wow, this is fantastic!

Almost 1 month haven’t update my blog. It’s time!
I have thousand new arrivals!

Last Friday, I went to watch Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs in 3-D with my friends at Times Square. Wow, that movie was nice, and it does have some meaning. Just like last time, we went to the amusement park to play some serious arcade games. I wasted 8 tokens on the Raging Storm arcade game. Again, I got the first place in U.S.A. Daytona (one time)!
Time to go home…

Last Saturday, I went to Plaza Low Yat with my elder brother and my mother to buy new PC for me! After a few times of surveys, I decided to buy a PC from C-Zone at 2nd Floor. I bought a PC with Core i5 750 @ 2.67 GHz CPU, 260GTX graphic card, 2 GB ram (actually I have planned to buy 4 GB ram, but it costs 2 hundred ringgit more, quite expensive), Intel DP55WB motherboard, Logitech gaming keyboard and mouse and many more….

I would like to say, my PC casing was cool!

Last Sunday, my whole family and I went to the Ikea to see some furnitures and eat dinner. After that, we went to Harvey Norman to see LCD TV. We were attracted by the Sony Bravia S 40′ LCD. At last, the salesman gave us the lowest price and we bought it!
It was sent to my house without any charge yesterday.
I felt cool about it!

I will save my words for another day.

The Aussies certainly don’t do things by halves. So far from around the world we’ve seen Sony adverts that have been humorous, confusing, intelligent and sometimes scary, so why not add extreme?

If you didn’t tell from the advert (and why would you) the offer is for a free PS3 with a purchase of a Sony Bravia television set. I don’t think Sony suggest you try this at home either.

A Great TV

my house got broken into and my 52v4100 was stolen. so i bought 52z5100. everything works perfectly except the audio. i can only listen to tv speakers or audio system. it cannot be both. my dad has hearing problems. he wants to keep the volume at a comfortable level for our family so that he normally uses wireless headset to listen to. He was able to do it on the old TV 52V4100 but not this Z5100. who is the engineer who could have thought about this STUPID idea and sony even adopted it.

other than that, it is a good TV, as always.

Dazzled!

I couldn’t be more pleased with this purchase. With an excellent picture and sound, it’s everything I expected and more. Amazon’s television delivery service is outstanding. The packaging and television arrived in perfect condition and the delivery people could not have been more accommodating to my needs.

This is the story of a TV. Not a TV with special powers, or a TV from outer space. No, just a regula

This is the story of a TV. Not a TV with special powers, or a TV from outer space. No, just a regular, flat screen, medium-range, perfectly ordinary TV.

This is also a story of the power of bloody-mindedness, a universal force that is not to be underestimated. In fact, some say that if only we could prove that planets have minds, it would be revealed as the one force that keeps the universe running.

Once upon a time, a company named Sony threw a billion coloured balls down a hill in San Francisco. They happened to have a video camera handy, and the resulting clip became an advert for their new range of televisions. They said that the colour of these new TVs was of great quality, and that that was why the balls bounced. Or something to that effect. It didn’t really matter, because the most important thing about the advert was that it made people feel happy.

A year or so later, Sony decided to riddle an abandoned housing estate in Scotland with paint bombs and set them off. Yet again, the resulting advert said a lot about colour, but what it really conveyed was the same tremendous bursting feeling of elation as the bouncing balls. Then came the bunnies.

There is one thing you must know about me: if you want to make me go all gooey and daft and lose all sense of dignity and restraint, wave something bunny-related at me. Seriously, it works every time. And Sony must have known this because, as if their previous adverts weren’t enough to convince me, they went and did one with giant animated plasticene bunnies. Gaaah!

It was around that time that my dear Hubby and I decided to move to the Emerald Isle, and therefore we parted company with a good few of our bulkier posessions, in order to make our international move easier. Our gigantic old cube of a TV was among the first to go, and so, once we were settled in Ireland, a new TV was one of the first things on our shopping list. As we were still in our temporary digs, waiting for our house to be ready to move in to, I had to walk past the Sony store on St Stephen’s Green every day on the way to work and back. They had big cardboard cutouts of bunnies in the window, taunting me. So after a while, Husband gave in to my begging, and just a few days after moving to Laytown, I went into the store and asked if I could put a deposit down on a TV. They took my credit card, I punched in my pin, and skipped away with my receipt in my pocket and a cardboard cutout bunny under my arm (I have awesome negotiating skills).

We had no car at the time, and the cost of getting the TV delivered out to our remote commuter town was more than the cost of hiring a car for a day, so we figured we would hire a car in a week or so and go pick up the TV. Besides, the house had no antenna and the cable hadn’t yet been installed, so there was no rush. I decided to go to the store one evening after work to ask them if they had it in stock and if they could keep one handy for when we wanted to pick it up. So I walked in, showed the salesman my receipt and he went to check.

He came back looking a little flustered, and said that they did indeed have the TV I wanted in stock, but that somehow my card had been charged for the full price, not just the deposit. So I actually owned a TV, and it was sitting there in their store room. I was rather furious, understandably, and decided that the TV would not remain in their back room a minute longer. I called Husband, who was fairly annoyed too, and he came to meet me. We took a look at the box, lifted it between us, and said “sure, 25kg is easily carried by 2 people, we shall take it now, thank you very much!”

This is where the bloody-mindedness kicks in. Once we had left the shop and done a few dozen meters, the 25kg of the TV were suddenly much heavier than we had thought, and the station seemed to be edging further and further away with every step. We were stopping every 20m or so, and the short 1km stroll to Pearse station became an endless trek. Needless to say, dragging a massive TV box through the turnpikes and on to the next train heading our way got us a few strange looks, and we had to stand next to it all the way to our stop to prevent it from toppling over.

Of course, for some strange reason, we hadn’t picked one of the houses next to the station, ours is about 1.5km away, and it’s pretty much uphill all the way. It took us about an hour of lifting, walking, stopping, much rubbing of sore hands and stretching of aching backs. By the time we reached our front door, I was pretty much crying from exhaustion and annoyance, and even ever-calm Husband was beginning to lose it. But we had our TV. In fact, at the time, we only had about 3 pieces of furniture in our big empty house, so our pride and joy had to sit on the floor with nothing much to do for quite a while longer.

And that, children, is why you should always be wary of bunnies.

Lists are funny things. Lists, to men, are like catnip to cats. We can’t resist them. It doesn

Lists are funny things.

Lists, to men, are like catnip to cats. We can’t resist them. It doesn’t matter what it is, we’ll create a list for it. It’s our anally retentive side coming into play; we like to know everything has its place. Most men I think can name their favourite albums, movies (and perhaps girlfriends) in a specific order since we’ve had every waking day to think about it.

When we forget to take the rubbish out, or wash up, it’s probably because we’re making a mental list of something (boring household chores perhaps…)

Lists are also endlessly used in television.

No doubt you will have sat through the Top 100 Singles of All Time, Your Favourite Films Ever or Top 100 Celebrity Sex Scandals – all the cheapest of TV formats and laziest of concepts, which is why they usually end up on satellite channels you’d rarely watch otherwise. They bring out the same D- and C-list celebrities (who’d turn up to the opening of a Coke can) to sit in front of a brightly-coloured animated backdrop – similar in style to a Lava Lamp – and then talk about an event/film/album/song/person the producer had reminded them about a few minutes earlier was such an important part in their life. The better celebrities may retell an amusing anecdote; most will resort to just laughing about nothing (the more they laugh, the more we’ll notice their smug faces while we’re drifting off to sleep) and talking bullshit.

“Oh yeah – haha – this one time my brother and me were – haha – were listening to this Queen song and doing that thing they do in Wayne’s World – haha – and – haha – my brother hit his head on the window of the car! Haha (remember me from that obscure show five years ago?… No?…I was great, honest…)“

However – and the producers of these shows know it – there’s something strangely addictive about them. Even if you get the most irritating celebrity most of all; stitching all the segments together with a witty thing to say before and after each advert break.

One of the worst example of this was probably David Gest (winner of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!) presenting the 100 Best Michael Jackson Songs (or something). It was an old show, repeated especially for the death of MJ. The embarrassing links provided by Mr. Gest reached their apex when he announced something along the lines of “You’ll live forever, Michael – you’re the best!”. David? I’m Embarrassed, Get Me Out Of Here!

Blogs also use this format. It’s a sure-fire way of getting people looking at your blog – people love lists remember!

So, all this being said, for the sake of both selfish amusement and the irony of my last paragraph, I’m going to resort to a list myself.

This list is (as you will have noticed from the title) regarding The Ten Best Music Videos in the World… Ever! (The title inspired by all those compilation albums from the late ’90s – in fact, they’re probably still churning them out).

The reason I’m picking music videos is that, by chance, I was watching MTV and between the irritatingly inane shows they put on, and the endless Rihanna videos, something interesting (and refreshingly pleasant on the ears) came on. Something with a wonderful hand drawn style featuring a superhero fighting squirrels and things to reach the princess in distress. The video is number one on my list (which is actually not in any particular order) and it inspired this little blog entry, so blame it for any boredom caused for this post.

It’s worth saying that I’ve been a fan of music videos ever since I got MTV2 a long time ago (in the good old days before it turned into the channel for Shit American Rock), so I know my Michel Gondry from my Chris Cunningham. There are many, many wonderful music videos around (and really, the top ten directors would have been more appropriate since so many are consistently fantastic) but leave any comments if you think I’ve missed out something really amazing.

1. Coldplay “Strawberry Swing” directed by Shynola. View on YouTube
This the first Coldplay video I’ve loved. The others have been okay, but either linked to a damn durge of a song (The Scientist) or just a bit too odd for their own good (Don’t Panic). The basic concept is that Chris Martin is a superhero on a background drawn, with chalk, on a pavement. Obviously this kind of effect could have been achieved in a computer but it seems Shynola actually hand-drew the damn thing with Chris Martin balancing/laying/hand-standing for each frame – I imagine having to wait for the artists to finish each drawing. To someone lacking patience like myself (I love animation but really, it’s boring as hell doing it frame by frame – see this fantastic Fast Show sketch) this makes Chris Martin an absolute star in my books (as if the rest of the world didn’t already consider himself one).

As for the song itself, I didn’t actually think much of it when I first listened to the album (to the point where, on seeing the video, I wondered whether it was even on an album) but now, I listen to it on an almost daily basis.

Users on YouTube obviously love it as well… “this is the most coolest video i have ever seen” is one of the more insightful comments.

It’s a rare but wonderful thing when a music video makes you like a song even more – or even to notice it at all. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it makes for a great experience. You’re able to listen to the song at any time and, even if the lyrics don’t connect specifically with you or if they are too abstract in the song to relate to anything, being reminded of the video makes it much more visual. It’s like a soundtrack album to a movie but in reverse, I’ve listened to The Shawshank Redemption soundtrack countless times, and it always evokes memories of the film (which is my favourite by the way – I’m sure I’ll do a ten ten movies as well some time…)

The talented artists behind this video are called Shynola who created the wonderful animations for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (one of the better things about the film) along with countless other videos – their best listed below, check ‘em out as they say in the States.

• Blur “Good Song” – Drawings by my favourite cartoonist, David Shrigley, animated – again, making an otherwise fairly pedestrian song come to life in what I think is the funniest music video I’ve ever seen, although I appreciate it’s not to everyone’s taste. View on YouTube

• UNKLE “Eye for an Eye” – An amazing video about cute little things running around their happy place being duped into drinking from giant nipples by an evil race of wasp things that then assimilate them all and take over their land. A thinly veiled political comment about the way the West come in, guns blazing, promising a better life and leave having destroyed everything. Well, I think that’s what it’s about anyway. It’s an amazing song and I bought the album because of this, which is lucky because it was, in my view, the best album of that year. View on YouTube

• Junior Senior “Move Your Feet” – I’m of the Commodore 64 generation, so anything with pixel graphics gets my vote, and it doesn’t get any better than this. It’s a crazy song (let’s face it – gay as cheese) and sounds like Terence and Philip from South Park singing, but it fits the video perfectly. As before, I bought the album after this, which is why I refuse to put this video in the overall Top Ten; the album is beyond terrible. View on YouTube

2. Radiohead “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” directed by Jonathan Glazer. View on YouTube
In those good old days on MTV2 that I spoke about with tear-filled nostalgic eyes earlier, this video was one of the most shown – with good reason. It’s a great song for a start. I’m not a massive Radiohead fan (I think they’re vastly overrated) but this one is tortured, weird and has a great tune.

The video ticks several boxes for me:

It’s in black and white (almost everything looks better in black and white); it has bits that are slowed down; bits that speed up; jumping nuns; locusts flying in slow motion; evil dogs; Thom Yorke looking weird; band member, Jonny Greenwood looking like a woman (many women would kill for his figure); glass smashing and someone falling over on their chair.

It’s put together with so much style that you can forgive them for what I imagine amounts to just a ‘brainstorming’ session where they thought “would would look cool slowed down in black and white”.

I’m sure there are many more videos considered better than this but this just sticks with me far more than most, I think due to its haunting nature and probably just that it’s, in my opinion, Radiohead’s best song.

The director is top of his class with a string of fantastic videos to his name. He also directed the wonderful film, Sexy Beast, which, if you haven’t seen, needs to be watched as soon as you can; Ben Kingsley should have gotten an Oscar for it. If that wasn’t enough, he’s the man behind the Guinness ad with the horses in the sea, the Sony Bravia ad with the exploding towerblocks of paint and the Levi’s ad with the emaciated boy and girl jumping through walls in order to reach space (apparently the most expensive advert ever at the time).

Other great videos by Jonathan Glazer:

• Jamiroquai “Virtual Insanity” – The irritatingly popular Jay Kay prances about with his stupid hat while the furniture moves around. Very cleverly done (albeit quite simple when you know how) and an example of a really good pop video, which is quite a rarity. View on YouTube

• UNKLE “Rabbit in Your Headlights” – A scruffy man walking down a tunnel, mumbling to himself, getting hit by cars. I’ve no idea what he’s thinking about (I read that he’s trying to work out the meaning of life) but the ending is spectacular. View on YouTube

3. Bjork “All is Full of Love” directed by Chris Cunningham. View on YouTube
This is one of the first videos (I think) released as a DVD single and it was the perfect video for the format. It’s stark and fascinating (like Bjork herself I suppose) and manages to be beautifully classy, despite the ridiculous premise (two robots, both with Bjork’s face, ‘get jiggy with it’ whilst robot arms prod them and cover them with something suspiciously milky and white).

The director, Chris Cunningham, has a something of a midas touch giving all his work a strange, sometimes scary, stylish as hell look that must be damn difficult to do.

In an ideal world, he’d direct an Alien film. Maybe one day…

Two of his other videos for you to look at (do a Google search for his others – they’re all great):

• Madonna “Frozen” – I think it’s Madonna’s best video. Not much happens, she’s a bit goth, she’s in the desert, there’s a black dog… but it’s a great song and it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling seeing Madonna grown-up, sensible, and not jumping around in a leotard telling people they’re ‘motherfuckers’ and pretending to be twenty again. View on YouTube

• Aphex Twin “Windowlicker” – One of life’s great annoyances for me (proving I don’t have too many) is that music as God-awful as Aphex Twin gets to have a decent video to go with it. This video is wonderfully stylish, funny, strange, freaky and deserves mention because it highlights the ridiculous conventions set in rap videos where some idiots ogle girls in bikinis. This video is the antithesis of The Thong Song. View on YouTube

4. A-Ha “Take on Me” directed by Steve Barron View on YouTube
Given my love of animation and ’80s music, it’s no big surprise that this is in my list and I think most people of my age remember this video very vividly (even down to the “Nice Cold Ice Cold Milk” poster in the cafe that haunted my youth in the school canteen).

Looking back, the video is extremely cheesy but the animation is so well done it’s easy to forgive it. I also wish they’d resisted the temptation to shoehorn the rest of the band into the video using crappy footage of them playing their instruments against a suitably ‘comic book’ style background. (The same problems haunt videos these days as well – it’s so much better when a band’s ego-driven demand to feature in the video doesn’t get in the way).

The director was very successful during this period, working on loads of other memorable videos but none were really as innovative as Take on Me.

5. The BPA “Toe Jam” directed by Keith Schofield View on YouTube
The BPA (or Brighton Port Authority) is a Fat Boy Slim (aka Norman Cook) project and this, the first release, comes with a fantastically inventive video.

To explain it would ruin the joke of it, so just watch and smile…

6. The White Stripes “Fell in Love with a Girl” directed by Michel Gondry View on YouTube
When I was young (here he goes again with nostalgia) I loved Lego and animated little things with it as well. I imagine the director, Michel Gondry, did the same when he was growing up since this video (like most of his actually) has a whimsical quality.

It’s a video comprised solely of animated Lego blocks. People swimming, the band singing and playing their instruments, running – everything damn difficult to animate anyway, especially in Lego.

Michel Gondry has a knack for doing really complex things (‘high concept’ should be his middle name), as his other videos prove even further. He’s now mainly doing feature films (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind being one) which is a shame as I think his ideas suit a short running time much better.

More of his videos:

• Kylie Minogue “Come Into My World” – Kylie must have gotten dizzy making this video; several versions of her walk around several times in a circle. I have no idea how he co-ordinated a shoot like this but it’s wonderfully done. View on YouTube

• Massive Attack “Protection” – A great video with the camera moving into different windows of a big house. It doesn’t sound exciting and, well, it isn’t really, but it’s a great video. View on YouTube

• Bjork “Bachelorette” – Difficult to describe, this video starts with a story being told and then a theatre production based on that story played out within it. Just watch it, it’s fantastic. View on YouTube

7. Blur “Coffee & TV” directed by Hammer & Tongs View on YouTube
Like Shynola, Hammer & Tongs are another group of talented chaps that have worked on many videos and they all (well, the ones I’ve seen) tend to have a humourous slant which defines their style.

Coffee & TV is the tale of a little milk carton that goes off on a little quest to find a missing person. It’s the kind of video that appeals to everyone; it’s funny, cute and there’s even a bit of emotion in there as well for the kind of people that cry over spilt milk.

They’re now doing feature films as well. Their first, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was good, but flawed. Their latest – Son of Rambow – is supposed to be very good but I’ve not seen it yet unfortunately.

Hammer & Tongs have worked on many great videos, but two of my other favourites are below:

• REM “Imitation of Life” – Worth watching for Michael Stipe’s interesting dance moves as well as the technical cleverness involved. It’s a piece of camcorder footage that keeps running forward, then backwards for twenty seconds at a time – we zoom into parts of the video to see details. A tough one to explain, but worth watching, and it’s a nice little tune! View on Spike (I couldn’t find a version on YouTube with audio)

• Fatboy Slim “Right Here, Right Now” – Evolution squeezed into 3:30 minutes with a great social comment at the end. Well, I think it’s meant like that anyway, or it’s just that they wanted to end with the guy from the album cover. View on YouTube

8. David Bowie “Ashes to Ashes” directed by David Mallet View on YouTube
It makes no bloody sense at all, but it’s an example of a really inventive video when music videos were still very ‘new’ (it was back in 1983 – MTV had only been around a couple of years at that point. It was also was less shit than now). I think it was the most expensive video ever at the time due to its use of the fancy video effects (things we can all do on an iPhone these days with the correct app).

Director, David Mallet, directed loads of rock videos (specialising on Queen and AC/DC, strangely) but this is, I think, his most famous.

Of all these videos, it’s probably the one you’ll disagree with the most. “It looks crap”, mate, “You’re getting nostalgic and losing your sense of style.” But, there’s just something about it that I love. I’m not a big David Bowie fan particularly, but there’s something wonderful about him walking down the beach dressed like an idiot with an old woman wagging her finger at him (and telling him not to trust Major Tom).

9. Michael Jackson “Thriller” directed by John Landis View on YouTube
I include this video a little reluctantly as every damn list of “best music videos ever” has this in it, but it really has to be. I’m not a fan of musicals (I turned Chicago off after the DVD menu) but there’s something mesmerising about a really great piece of choreography.

There’s also the fact that this music video was an ‘event’. I was too young to remember it at the time but enough people have told me how they stayed up late to watch it to make me think that perhaps it was more of a big deal than we can appreciate these days. The Internet has ruined things a bit really… we don’t have ‘events’ any more, do we?

Anyway, the director’s other films include American Werewolf in London (that qualified him to make Thriller really), Trading Places and Coming to America so that makes him damn good in my book.

10. Massive Attack “Teardrop” directed by Walter Stern View on YouTube
God knows how a video comprised entirely of a foetus singing can be so good, but it really is.

The director is another fairly prolific one, working on videos for Prodigy, David Bowie, Madonna and INXS as well as another two for Massive Attack.

Another of his videos:

• Verve “Bitter Sweet Symphony” A riff on Massive Attack’s video for Unfinished Sympathy, this was the video that, thanks to Richard Ashcroft walking down the road like an arrogant bastard, helped launch Verve into the public eye when we already had arrogant bastards, Oasis. View on YouTube

So, that’s it.

You’ll have noticed that I’ve cheated a little bit by including other videos from some of the directors (making the list far more than just ten) but I don’t care, it’s my list, I can do what I want with it.

There are, however, some other videos I’ve not mentioned that I feel I should for various reasons – those are listed below. Have a look at all of them if you find the time!

Leftfield “Swords” View on YouTube
Summary: A bunch of people in cars, singing along to a chilled out track. I find it mesmerising.

Fatboy Slim “Weapon of Choice” View on YouTube
It’s Christopher Walken. Dancing. Nothing more needs to be said.

Supermen Lovers “Starlight” View on YouTube
Traditionally, 3D animation tends to be quite slick but here the animator has gone at great lengths to make the characters as ugly as possible. It’s a great little story and strangely emotional at the end!

Elbow “One Day Like This” View on YouTube
I’m including this partly because the song is wonderful but also because I think the video is so strange. It doesn’t match the lyrics at all but just focuses on one guy finding joy doing a mundane job. Beautiful.

Nizlopi “JCB” View on YouTube
A wonderfully nostalgic little song with a video to match.

Super Furry Animals “It’s Not the End of the World?” View on YouTube
Another great piece of 3D animation.

Pet Shop Boys “I’m With Stupid” View on YouTube
I’ve never been a fan of the Pet Shop Boys’ videos, but this one is great since it’s the guys from Little Britain doing a terrible (yet accurate) impression of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe.

Peter Gabriel “Sledgehammer” View on YouTube
Most ‘top video’ lists include this at a high position because it was groundbreaking (and it marked the arrival of Aardman Animation – the makers of Wallace and Gromit). It is a very clever video, and perhaps the Coldplay video I mentioned at the beginning of the list wouldn’t have existed were it not for this. Oh, and it’s about shagging, but you knew that…

Definitely not on any of my lists:

Queen “Bohemian Rhapsody” Don’t View on YouTube
Just plain awful.

I hope you liked this list and feel free to write a comment challenging me on any of my picks. I’m sure I’ve left out some great videos, so tell me and I’ll be happy to rethink any of the ones above if you prove that I’m wrong in some way.
