If you own the Xperia X1, chances are, you probably love the fact that you have Microsoft Mobile Office on your mobile phone. You can edit and make Word and Excel Documents on the go. However, since the Xperia X1 is not a PC, there are limitations to what MS Mobile Office can do. For one, Mobile Excel cannot save excel files with file extension csv. Unlike the desktop version of Excel wherein you can save as file types to different version of excel and even csv files, Mobile Excel cannot.

If you want to create database files, you need third party applications which you can install on your Xperia. Pockert Database Viewer is one such application which can view and edit CSV files. As for Pocket Word, opening VERY large doc files will take a LONG time. Also, when you transfer the documents you made on your Pocket Word to your PC, you’ll notice that these documents will have the file extension docx. Now if you have Microsoft Office lower than the 2007 version, you need to install some sort of extended application for your MS Word to view these type of files. Don’t worry, it’s free but the application will take up a lot of space from your hard disk drive.

So even though Xperia X1 is cool to carry around on a business trip, I wouldn’t really leave my laptop if I were you.

X1 the fabulous new model touchscreen handset comes from Lenova proudly. This handset features a 3.2-inch WQVGA display and a slide-out keypad. The company says that it is inspired by other models from several rivals for labeling the user interface “Touch Dream”. Moreover, the reference of this X1 is also used for the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 handset.

Palm, the world’s shittiest smartphone company, apparently isn’t bankrupt yet.  This may come to a shock to anyone who heard their idea for the Foleo.

Their newest device actually looks to be a fantastic amalgam between popular sliding keyboard phones like the HTC Tytn I and Tytn II, the newer preimum phones like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and HTC Touch Pro, the already ubiquitious Blackberry Bold, and the touchscreen-only phones like the iPhone (or my own unubiquitious E-ten Glofiish X600, check out GSMArena for descriptions of any of those other phones as well).  Check out a brief tech summary of the device at Engadget, or a longer entirely non-technical report on the device and the importance of the Pre to Palm’s future success at the New York Times (sidenote: The NYT does technology and sports reporting so poorly I wish they would just give up and save the trees and webmaster’s time).

A better example of technological reporting for real smartphone nerds can be found at GSMArena (despite that the Pre will be available only as a CDMA device initially, with a GSM variant coming later).

The hotness comes from it’s fair size and weight (a bit clunky in shape, since there seems to be a fair bit of plastic real estate around the screen).  It’s a bit thick at 16.95mm but that is understandable for any sliding keyboard phone.  At 135 grams, it is a middleweight for a PDA phone, but once again, very respectable for one equipped with the sliding keyboard.

The excellent screen size (3.1″) and resolution (320×480) are good to see as well, and keeps the device competitive with more multimedia-oriented devices.

It has the full slate of demanded specifications as well, such as A2DP stereo bluetooth capability (as opposed to the neutered iPhones) for music and movie lovers that can live with the reduced quality for the increased range of movement and freedom (I’m a Plantronics Voyager 855 user myself), built-in GPS (we’ll see every phone with one soon enough), wifi-G, microUSB (hopefully to be used for optional USB charging, syncing/tethering with devices to use the wireless data stream, as well as for file transfers from USB devices), and amazingly, a 3.5mm headphone connector for the real audiophiles (let’s hope wired headsets can be used with an adapter as well).

The faux hotness comes from the gesture-ready lower touchpad so you can use gestures to perform some functions.  Anyone who uses a smartphone like I do (reading webpages one-handed while at the gym, on public transportation, or in any sort of lineup) will recognize that as a fairly useless function meant to impress people around you who haven’t seen an iPhone before or like the ‘toy’ factor.  I really don’t trust making gestures with a finger on the phone over tapping a tiny button when I’m on the bus or subway… It seems like a pretty precarious position for those of us who would prefer to not drop our phones unnecessarily.

And the superhotness:  Wireless charging!  Rather than ruin your precious phone by constantly plugging and unplugging the device on a nightly basis (I’ve busted the headet connector on a $720 Eten M600 back in the day from daily connects and disconnects, which forced me to make the unregretted move to A2DP audio), you can buy a (probably) superexpensive lux Touchstone charging station and magnetic backplate for the Pre so that it can be charged by resting the Pre on the Touchstone.  Like magic, it is.  Let’s hope it’s efficient as well and not a energy sieve.

The phone does have some major shortcomings, however.  First, it will be a CDMA-only (ugh) and Sprint-only device initially, meaning you will likely only be able to get it at a decent price if you indenture yourself with some outrageous $60/m data + voice contract.  As a non-data user (that’s what wifi is for!), I’m personally offended by the extra $360/yr charge the wireless providers demand for largely unneeded data plans for these devices.  Second, it will have builtin memory at a sufficent but non-expandable size of 8 gigs.  With microSD as cheap and widespread as it is right now, I’d much prefer to rely entirely on the external flash memory given the option.  Oh, and I bet this thing is going to be ass expensive.  Like, almost Xperia X1-ass expensive.

And the best news of all for the phone nerd who always felt that these smartphones always fell short of being able to perform ‘everything’ (from the GSMArena article):

Sounds like the Xperia X1 phone has finally been released. I’m not sure on the exact date, but it happened recently. Thank god I ended up getting the G1 (which I LOVE) and didn’t wait for this phone…retail price for the X1 is $799.99. You can purchase one at SonyStyle.com and I can’t tell which carrier it’s on or if it’s even with a carrier. It doesn’t really sound like it’s with any. From the very few reviews I’ve read about the X1, it seems like Windows Mobile is still laggy on this phone which is a huge bummer. That’s another good reason why I didn’t wait for this phone. I was hoping (if I had decided to get this phone) that the OS would be better…but apparently not. A laggy OS is something that would really drive me crazy. I don’t quite understand why Windows Mobile can’t get it right and make their OS better. There’s so many other mobile OS’s that can do it…why can’t they?

Μόλις επέστρεψα από το αγοραστικό safari μου στον κόσμο της “έξυπνης” κινητής τηλεφωνίας. Ναι οκ, τα μαγαζιά έκλεισαν από τις 21.00, αλλά να μην πάω να φάω και κάτι και να πιω έναν καφέ;!; Επί 3 ώρες, πέρα από το ευχάριστο τεχνολογικό κυνήγι, γύριζα από μαγαζί σε μαγαζί με τη φίλη μου προς εύρεση του κατάλληλου φορέματος για το ρεβεγιόν της Πρωτοχρονιάς. Η ενδυμασία για το ρεβεγιόν των Χριστουγέννων έχει ήδη αποφασιστεί εδώ και μέρες. Είχα όρεξη για μεξικάνικο απόψε και πήγα στο Amigos της Γλυφάδας. Πρόθυμο και ευγενικό service και σχετικά καλές τιμές. Τι να τα κάνεις όμως όλα αυτά όταν το chilli con carne θυμίζει περισσότερο βιοχλαπάτσα παρά φαγητό;!;;  ;p  Προς στιγμή πίστεψα ότι αν το πέταγα στον τοίχο θα έκανε γκελ!

Εκεί, λοιπόν, που καθόμουν απολαμβάνοντας το “βιονικό” μου δείπνο, άρχισα να συγκρίνω τις σημειώσεις μου από τις συσκευές που είδα. Το Xperia X1 δεν το βρήκα μιας και επισήμως δεν έχει ακόμα κυκλοφορήσει στην ελληνική αγορά. Ωστόσο, βρήκα κατάστημα στην Αθήνα που το έχει και αύριο θα πάω να το δοκιμάσω από κοντά. (Σημ: Ένα διαθέσιμο έχει μείνει και έχω κάνει κράτηση. Μην τυχόν πάει κανείς και το πάρει, γιατί θα βάλω τον Chuck Norris να έρθει να σας βρει!)

Τώρα από τις συσκευές που είδα απόψε, δύο με εντυπωσίασαν περισσότερο: Samsung Omnia & HTC Touch HD. Το Touch Pro δεν με κέρδισε καθόλου, αν και πίστευα το ακριβώς αντίθετο. Το Touch HD, σαφέστατα, διαθέτει μια από τις πιο εντυπωσιακές οθόνες της αγοράς αλλά το μέγεθος του δεν μου είναι ιδιαίτερα βολικό. Το Omnia είναι μια πολύ όμορφη συσκευή και αρκετά γρήγορη αν σκεφτεί κανείς ότι η συσκευή που δοκίμασα είναι εν ενεργεία τις τελευταίες δύο μέρες χωρίς σταματημό.

Και τις δύο συσκευές τις θεωρώ finger-friendly, αν και η εμπειρία μου από το iPhone (για την οποία θα αφιερώσω ένα μελλοντικό post) με έχει κακομάθει. Μεταξύ Omnia και Τouch HD, η επιλογή είναι αρκετά δύσκολη και με τη διαφορά τιμής να αγγίζει τα 200 euro. Αύριο, πάντως, θα έχω κατασταλάξει.

Μέχρι τότε, σας εύχομαι Καλά Χριστούγεννα και να μην είστε τσιγκούνηδες και κακόκεφοι στα παιδάκια με τα κάλαντα! Και αυτά για το δώρο τους δουλεύουν!

Σίγουρα θα με θεωρήσετε παλαβό. Μα γιατί να μπλεχτώ με το χειρότερο εκπρόσωπο της Microsoft μετά τα Vista;

Πρώτον, γιατί είμαι μαζόχας και θέλω να δω γιατί επικρατεί μια τόσο αρνητική αντίληψη για τα WinMo. Πάντα ήμουν της άποψης ότι αν δεν δοκιμάσεις, δεν πρόκειται να μάθεις. Δεύτερον, γιατί χρειάζομαι να έχω πάντα μαζί το Word, με το οποίο έχω μια σχέση εξάρτησης. Τρίτον, γιατί θέλω μια επαγγελματική συσκευή, η οποία να μην ξεκινά με τη λέξη “Black” και να τελειώνει με τη λέξη “Berry”.

Έχω κάποιες συσκευές στο μυαλό μου, αλλά διαβάζοντας διάφορα reviews και παρακολουθώντας αρκετά videos στο YouTube, είμαι πιο μπερδεμένος από ποτέ! Για την ώρα οι επικρατέστερες στη λίστα μου (με σειρά προτεραιότητας) είναι:

1. Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
2. HTC Touch Pro
3. Samsung Omnia
4. HTC Touch HD

Το δίλημμα είναι μεγάλο. Για αρχή, θα επισκεφτώ απόψε μερικά καταστήματα τεχνολογίας για να δω τις συσκευές από κοντά. Ο τρόπος που αισθάνεται κανείς μια συσκευή στην παλάμη του χεριού του αποτελεί ένα σημαντικό κριτήριο για τις καταναλωτικές επιλογές μου.

Θα επιστρέψω αργότερα με τα ευρήματα μου.
