«©NCSX» A new girl named Andou Ringo joins Amitie, Arle, and the rest of the gang in Puyo Puyo color-matching puzzle antics. She’s a ginger with a cheerful demeanor, waif-like frame, and her character meshes well with the previous Puyo heroines mentioned above. The action in Puyo7 hews true to the previous volumes but with “Fever”-like puzzle matching interludes.

In the Story Mode of the game, the first puzzle battle is against a trio of Skeletons (Skeleton-T) but their skills are rudimentary and they don’t pose much of a challenge. We knocked them out with a 5-string combo that ended with a double-color-match that made the skeletons scream in a somewhat comical manner. The next challenge is against the boy with the blue hair named Sig (Shigo) and he’s got some skills but they weren’t enough to match our quick color-combo-creation tactics. The Skeletons return in the third round and it’s a race to see who can create the most matches. Raffine steps in for the fourth round with her billowing pink hair and baby blue eyes.

It took longer than usual but we beat Raffine too. The fifth challenge brings in Feli who’s normally sweet but she shows her dark side in the interaction sequence with Ringo. After beating Feli, Ringo will appear somewhat smug as she tosses an apple on one hand. A decidedly different looking Amitie is the sixth competitor and she wears a different type of hat. The challenge gets a little tougher with Amitie on the other side of the screen but after two tries, we knocked her out too.

«©NCSX» Return to the world of Neverland and relive the original Spectral Force tactical adventure game which was first released on the Playstation in 1997. For the 2009 remake, Idea Factory updates the visuals and revamps the strategy and battle sequences with the Generation of Chaos game engine which allows players to fortify their castles and borders as well as mobilize armies against neighboring territories. When a conflict erupts, contingents of regimented soldiers face off against similarly arranged contingents on battlefields of varying terrain. Similar to the rules of engagement found in the Famicom Wars games, larger forces generally decimate smaller ones except tactical formations may also be used to gain an advantage against an army that’s sizable.

In addition to the battles between states, players will also manage trade, diplomacy, and personal relationships to ensure a strong and functional country that can operate without hindrances. Neverland is split into 40 warring states led by different rulers but the main cast of characters in the game are as follows:

» Hiro – Redheaded progeny of Overlord Janus; half demon, half human.
» Orochimaru – Lord of Muromachi and a consummate warrior-general
» Chiffon – Used the demon-slaying sword Tenmaken to defeat Janus
» Little Snow - Winsome and willowy Queen who enjoys Jadou’s company
» Jadou - Estranged brother of Hiro who isn’t fond of humans

«©NCSX» The heroes of the previous Kenka Bancho games have shuffled off to greener pastures. We imagine Yasuo from the first game to be a shopkeeper nowadays, peddling individually wrapped pieces of sushi at JPY100 a pop. Tomoya from the second game is probably still a punk but one with a job. At the local “hostess” bar. Earning his keep as muscle.

The two earlier Kenka Bancho games were cult. They didn’t reach the critical mass that would have engendered a wave of merchandising deals but the games were popular enough to ensure another release in order to bring the series to trilogy status. The new protagonist in Kenka Bancho is a fresh-faced youth named Takashi Sakamoto who’s living on the wrong side of the school yard. He’s tough, fast, and has got a serious problem with authority figures. To that end, he gets into fights with other toughs and bristles in the presence of teachers. Takashi does have one redeeming quality however. He’s ambitious. He wants to be the top dog among all the gangsters in all the high schools across all 47 prefectures. To reach his lofty goal, Takashi battles other bruisers in a bid to become the king of all Japan.

Similar to the previous games in the series, Takashi can battle multiple enemies at once and engage in Menchi-Beam contests. Errands, missions, and objectives also pop up from time to time to give players a bit of variety in the action. At one point in the game, an incident causes Takashi to shear all of his hair off. We thought it was a symbolic rebirth of sorts.

Joystiq reported that the British Royal Navy bought 230 Sony PlayStation Portables at the cost of £50,000 to be given to it’s sailors for studies purposes. Hmmmmm, I thought such lame excuse could only be cooked up by school children to dupe their gadgets challenged soccer moms? Hey, if it worked on the British Government – maybe it’ll work for you too. Armed with a big ego and some skills, Priere is confident in her ability to tackle her chosen job with precocious efficacy. Staking out in the world to make a name for herself and a band of demon hunters called La Pucelle, Priere hopes to play a part in quelling an outburst of demons that have invaded the world. Joining Priere in the adventure is her younger brother Culotte who’s mature beyond his years. The other members of La Pucelle include Alouette who’s the siblings’ teacher and a demon hunter named Croix.

The game gets things started slowly with a few training missions where bats attack but they’re fairly easy to dispatch. As the party levels up in skills and abilities, the missions gradually increase in complexity and difficulty. Guide the La Pucelle crew through a total of 12 chapters where the tactical, grid-based battles gradually become more involved. Monsters may also be recruited and trained to battle on the party’s behalf. In order to keep the monster in the party, its level of happiness and contentment must be sustained or it’ll vamoose and go back to its usual wild monster habits.

The PSP upgrade of La Pucelle includes a new scenario which features Demon-Priere and characters from Disgaea including Etna, Flonne, and Laharl. Players can also utilize new spells, skill sets, rotate maps, listen to full voice acting, and skip battle animations to speed up the pace of play.

«©NCSX» Japanese developer Lass originally released 11eyes CrossOver for the Xbox 360 in March 2009 and they’re porting the game over to the Playstation Portable early next year. The hero in the game is a lad named Kakeru Satsuki who was orphaned at a young age along with his sister. However, while at the orphanage, Kakeru’s sister committed suicide which  left him desolate and lost. Despite the tragedy that befell him, Kakeru nevertheless soldiered onwards with help from his friend Yuka Minase and new friends in high school. Kakeru has been living a relatively normal life until his world goes awry (quite literally) when he discovers an alternate reality. The kind of reality where monsters hunt unsuspecting innocents. Kakeru and Yuna call the strange reality “Red Night” and eventually team up with four other heroes who are also privy to the new reality. The narrative of the adventure comes from the perspective of multiple characters.

The PSP conversion of the game features a new event scene designed exclusively for the PSP, a new opening cinema, and extra wallpaper to use in the XMB menu. In addition to the regular edition of the game, preorders are welcome for a limited edition which includes a USB memory card. Preorders are welcome to ship on January 28, 2010.

This has been on my wishlist ever since I first saw this many moons ago when they announced a Queen’s Blade figma to be released as an exclusive bundle to the PSP game.

My friend coffeebugg told me today that he has three of those coming in this January and one of them doesn’t have an owner yet! So I told him right away that I’d be more than happy to take that owner-less figma off his hands.

«©NCSX» The land of Beruge is divided into two halves – one side is continually lit by the sun whilst the other is under perennial darkness. On the side of the light is a 17-year old priestess named Cecelia who works as an apprentice in the Beruge Temple. Cecelia’s mother died giving birth to her and she was raised by her father who’s a high-priest in the Temple. On the dark side of Beruge, an elite knight named Levant von Schweizer leads his compatriots under the banner of the Empire. Although the two protagonists start their adventures under different circumstances and on opposing sides of Beruge, they’ll nevertheless team up in their respective quests.

Hexyz Force is an RPG that gives players the reins over Cecelia or Revanto at the outset and each protagonist goes through a unique storyline that eventually unites the two in a cooperative mission to defeat a dark overlord. The two heroes command a motley yet mighty cadre of warriors known as the Hexyz Force whom are arranged in 3 x 3 battalions on the battlefield to tackle monsters and opposing forces. The attacks are turn-based with the party members getting a chance to strike or use magic in every round against a contingent of enemies. Each blow or magic blast is shown with a short animated sequence which conveys some semblance of conflict during the skirmishes. After each successful encounter, a “Triumph” screen appears which tallies experience gained and any level-ups for the characters. The Triump screen is accompanied by the words “The Hexyz march onward in victory, their hands held high” which scroll on the top and bottom of the screen.

«©NCSX» After the claustrophobic underground existence found in Armored Core 3, human civilization moves back to the surface world to rebuild. Instantly returning to their old rivalries, the ruling corporations comprised of Crest, Mirage, and Kisaragi all vie again for control and set upon each other with mechanical mercenaries called Ravens. Owing allegiance to no one except the highest bidder, Ravens work for a fee and ply their destructive trade against each other under the directive of the corporations.

Players take on the role of a Raven who serves as an agent of the powers that be. Ravens accept jobs as they are doled out and strike out on action-packed missions against rival corporations. To customize the mechs, the garage features 452 available parts to boost your Raven’s fighting performance and battlefield efficiency. By tweaking a mech’s equipment and upgrading its weaponry, the Raven may gain an edge against rivals and opposing forces. A total of 34 missions are available along with an “Multi-Battle” mode where up to four Ravens battle each other to determine primacy in the Raven Corps food chain. Rankings amongst the top Ravens may also be determine in the Arena Mode.

The Playstation Portable version of AC3SL allows players to copy parts of the game from UMD to a memory stick to reduce loading times. The software also allows the transfer of save-data from Armored Core 3 Portable to Silent Line for a smooth transition for fans of the series.

At least PSP’s are selling well in Japan. Here’s a look at the silver Kingdom Hearts PSP-3000, fit to satisfy Birth By Sleep fans. Looks better than the PSPgo!

Sony announced that the next iteration of the PlayStation 3’s firmware will be available for download starting today. Version 3.10 adds Facebook functionality to the PS3, including automatic Trophy and purchase updates. It also allows developers to include “trigger points” for Facebook integration in their PS3 games. Sony calls this Facebook service “the first phase of a variety of new features to further connect and enhance the online social experiences of PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system owner.”

Other, less marquee features, include a new grid layout for photos and an updated friends list with the ability for users to change the background color of profiles. You can see the update in action on video here.

Yuki maintains a detailed record of his daily observances and this attention to minutiae helps when he’s recruited (against his will) into a deadly game of survival. The Grandmaster of the game is an entity known as Deus Ex Machina who’s existence is rapidly coming to an end and the goal of the survival game is to find Deus’ successor. The PSP game is played in interactive format where choices are made to determine the direction of the story and outcome.

The Pentax K-x isn’t the only one getting its rainbow array on. A leaked survey for Sony’s PSPgo asked participants what colors they would potentially buy or would like to see released. Granted this is a survey, these colors may never get released.

Colors are usually used to boost sales for products. With the PSPgo not looking like much of a contender because of it’s “download only” content, Sony could use some reloads. Nintendo sure knows that, seeing as how every time they release their DS hardware in new colors, buyers go crazy.
