I have been making little films for almost a year now and I have come to the conclusion that  the parts that take a lot of time are excruciatingly boring and stupid.

I want the content to play at a really high quality using a freely available open source standard codec  but so far nothing really seems to work.   So i guess that just means each iteration of a film is essentially a new print as the codec used to compress the file can have a huge impact on the final product(There isn’t much talk about lossless video) and the available codec make HUGE files.

Actually I hear there are actually people out there that use pirated versions of popular media manipulation software which are easily attained THey essentially function as a further avenue of marketing , a way to get a large enough user base so your software can actually become a vital part of a working environment. An environment will include many companies that do buy the software.  But seriously Sony Vegas has a really nice multiple format drag and drop video audio mixing interface that is really easy.

I made two films which include some crudely rendered canon 7d footage the last one was 1.1 gigs yet it failed to upload to You Tube(2 gig,ten minute limit) I’ve tried 4 times so far..oh well.

In conclusion here is the first of aforementioned film followed by some notes

You may wonder how this related to the material but given the constraints of time I have decided to construct a longer more ruminated on piece of “film” and therefore certain aspects may only become concrete after a few episodes.
You may also question the style of the video and my only comment there is that time is what is needed.  Time and huge embracing screens or isolation tanks filled with salt and wired for video.

Just above this line is a file of me trying out recording directly on the Macbook using the built in Mic and Logic 9.  I am a longtime VEGAS user and I am just now trying the waters with Logic, as I have discovered that I am more comfortable with Macintosh than PC, and VEGAS isn’t available on Mac.  Anyway, it’s a steep learning curve and transition, but I dig it.  Macbook is a 2.13 GHZ Intel Core Duo with 4 GB RAM running Snow Leopard.  Recordings with the built in mic always seem to have a strange hiss/buzz going on…

Mi amigo Urbano Herrero es fanático principalmente de los Jeep pero le va todo lo relacionado con motor y coches (sobretodo si son 4×4) y de vez en cuando me manda algún mail con enlaces a vídeos que encuentra por la red o que recibe en su correo referentes al motor, deportivos (sobre todo americanos), etc.,  ya que es buen conocedor de que a mí también me gustan mucho.

Pues bien, hoy me ha enviado un vídeo en que, cómo no, aparecían dos modelos Jeep. Al comenzar a ver el vídeo, mi corazón sufrió un subidón de pulsaciones al oir los acelerones. En el momento en que aparecen los cochazos mis pulsaciones aumentaron todavía más, pero de repente, me fijo mejor en las imágenes  y comienzo a dudar entre si se trataba de modelos reales o de modelos realizados en 3D, fue cuando pensé que se trataba pues de alguna intro de un videojuego. Hasta el momento en que aparece esa enorme esfera que cae del cielo y de la cual sale una especie de alienígena que transforma los coches en malos malotes, parecido al alién de Venom de Spiderman, en ese instante me quedó clarísimo lo que estaba viendo: una animación 3d bestial.

La verdad es que el vídeo es alucinante, un trabajo excepcional de calidad suprema, no solo por el 3D sino por la utilización de otros programas como AfterEffects y varios Plug-ins  como Fume FX.

Un trabajo que desde luego a mí me ha dejado boquiabierto por la combinación cochazos-3D y lo bestial que ha quedado. El final del vídeo es una muestra de “cómo se hizo” en el 3DS MAX STUDIO 2008, donde los objetos están representados mediante su estructura alámbrica.

De verdad, esto no es bueno para mi corazón. Cuando casi me da algo es en el momento en que el autor nos dice al final del vídeo que el proceso de renderizado ha tardado 110 días. :O (la verdad, no me extraña).

Bueno, al terminar de verlo me he puesto a buscar información para vosotros sobre el autor y bueno, no he conseguido encontrar su página web (quizás no tenga), pero sí varios enlaces de los cuales uno es una entrevista que le hacen en la página rusa Render.ru, página que he tenido que traducir con el google traductor porque si no no me entero de nada (entrevista traducida).

De esa página traducida he podido rescatar que PANTURAL, que es el autor de este trabajo de animación,  realmente se llama Tural Seferov. Nació en 1985  en Bakú, capital de Azerbaiyán. Desde la infancia le encantaba dibujar y jugar con el barro. A los 15 años comenzó a trastear el Photoshop, posteriormente comenzó a manejar el programa Movie Maker y a los 17 se enteróde la existencia del programa de edición de vídeo VEGAS. Años más tarde oyó hablar de After Effects, Adobe Premiere y empezó a trabajar con ellos. Al tiempo comenzó a estudiar por su propia cuenta gráficos 3D con el 3D Max 7 y con la edad de 20 años hizo una película a la que llamó “Koma“.

En la entrevista nos dice que cuando realizó su primer modelo Jeep no se imaginaba realmente que lo podía hacer, sin embargo al finalizar la primera pieza del modelo que fue el guardabarros, tardó 5 horas y fue entonces cuando comprendió que sí podía realizar el modelo en 3D, objetivo que consiguió 14 días después. Al poco tiempo empezó a usar Vray  y así poco a poco hasta que ha llegado al nivel de los vídeos de este post.

Por último, destaco que según indica en la entrevista, en cuanto se enteró de la existencia de Render.ru se inscribió sin tener mucha idea de cómo funcionaba Internet. En ese momento Tural iniciaba una nueva era de 3D donde Internet jugó y juega un importante papel ya que el 50% de los conocimientos que adquirió y adquiere vienen de esta inmensa fuente de información.

Personalmente veo a Tural una persona inquieta, en constante mejora contínua, autodidacta, una persona creativa sin duda, que le gusta experimentar, aprender, etc. Sin duda una joyica de 24 años.

Detta är då slutresultatet av dagens arbete i Sony vegas och Photoshop (cs4) till Songbirdtävlingen. Blev ganska nöjd faktiskt, och dessutom är det bara två andra som lagt upp sina bidrag så för tillfället är jag garanterad minst en Songbird t-shirt i min samling. Fast det lär väl komma några till innan slutdatumet. Hoppas att jag står pall för konkurrensen i så fall.

Det har varit full rulle de senaste två dagarna så jag har inte hunnit skriva något,
det kompenserar jag för nu istället!

I tisdags var jag på en föreläsning av Jan Erik Solem om hans projekt/företag Polar Rose som jobbar med igenkänningsalgoritmer inom två och tredimensionella bilder. Först berättade han lite om sin utbildning och hur han blivit intresserad av att jobba inom ämnet, sedan demonstrerade han de grundläggande principerna var på allting var uppbyggt. Väldigt häftigt att få se hur programmet jobbade med olika färgkoder för att avgöra om två objekt liknade varandra. Hans vision var att istället för att som nu låta söktjänsterna crawla siter efter attribut taggar så ska alla användare själva lägga till sig själva och vänner till databasen där man snabbt ska kunna hitta relevanta träffar. Därifrån ska tekniken utvecklas så att de som vill kan få sin porträtt automatiskt taggade med hjälp av de som redan finns i databasen som utgångspunkt.
Det var inspirerande att höra på vad Jan hade att säga, och att få se att det faktiskt finns företag som Polar Rose i Sverige som faktiskt redan har och vill expandera med nyskapande teknik utanför rikets gränser. Hela konceptet känns väldigt osvenskt (i positiv mening) och jag skulle utan tvekan vara beredd att jobba för ett så visionärt företag som Polar Rose.

Igår hade jag fullt sjå med att göra klart mitt visnings klipp till Songbird (vars ledningsstil till liknar Polar Rose, bortsett från open-source aspekten och den faktiska produkten), Sony vegas har gått på högvarv och medan klippen renderades hann jag till och med att installera CS4 på datorn. Yippie!
Ska ordna med intro/outro bilder i photoshop sen lägga till ljudspåren (Lights – Lions! och min egen ljuva stämma…) sen är det klart! Hinner jag idag ska jag börja på en fjärde fjäder alternativ fixa lite på Sparkle.

Får ju inte heller glömma nämna att tisdagens avsnitt av House var vansinnigt bra!

A special treat today: my first video promo. Another school project which I apprehended since I haven’t touched that medium in almost 20 years, but then I thought it would be a great opportunity to finally test video with my 5d mark II. So I did and was quite floored by the results. I love getting a photographic depth of field effect, the use of my favorite lenses and the image quality of the end product is quite amazing.

I edited the short film on Vegas movie studio platinum 9 (can they make that brand any longer?) which I got in the mail monday. So it was my first time using video editing software. Great piece of software, nicely user friendly, although I just used very basic functions so I can’t tell its limitations. But I love when I pick a piece of software and figure it out in a couple of hours.

The music is Carly’s song (age of Loneliness) from Enigma (from the movie Sliver which I loved back in the day – steamy William Baldwin and Sharon Stone) which gives a cool, relaxed mood to the piece. This was shot using the modeling lamp of a flash fit with a soft box and a reflector. I am the model.

I thought I would have fun with this project and do something tongue in cheek, simple, effective and well edited. Who knows… it might start a trend, how about using a short video like this one as an ID on the web 2.0? Of course people would choose their expressions, they might not want to do the cheesy come on look that I did here… although some might… to each their own. I just wanted to try to schmize (smile with your eyes – I picked that up America’s next top model a few weeks back), and it is great fun, as usual, to not take myself too seriously.

So what do you guys think?

Chroma Keying is one of my favorite functions when it comes to shooting video. It does however make you lazy, as you can find yourself relying on just shooting in front of a green screen rather than searching for a suitable location.

I could spend hours (and have done) playing with different effects, both with the subject standing in front of the screen or with the back ground, changing it so that you place you subject in different locations.

I use Apple’s Final Cut, and this is what I do to ensure my Chroma Key looks good

1-   Add Colour Smoothing 4:1:1, Chroma Keyer and Spill Suppressor (Green/Blue depending on what background you are using).

2-   Turn off Colour Smoothing and spill suppressor (for the moment).

3-   Adjust the Chroma Keyer take out as much of the background as possible and use the slider functions (Thin Edge, Smoothing and Enhance) to fine tune the colour.

4-   When you are happy with the result use the Colour Smoothing 4:1:1 filter and just turn it on/off to see if it helps the overall output, if it doesn’t just leave it off.

5-   Finally use the Spill Suppressor to take out any green from the subjects face or features, and use the slider to adjust this.

You should now have a good looking Chroma effect.
