Os presento al grupo vizcaíno “Surf Is Dead”. Grupo procedente de “Metadones”, que cambió de cantante y estilo. El anterior cantante “Ricky” dejó paso al ex”Cuatroporcuatro” “Jonan”, dando un aire nuevo a los temas del grupo. Actualmente, la banda la componen Jonan (voces y guitarra), Roke (bajo), Niko (guitarra) y Trusko (batería), tras la marcha de Fermín, antiguo guitarrista.

Con influencias que van desde el Stoner hasta el Metal, pasando por el Hard Rock y el Punk, sus canciones son contundentes y están llenas de rabia. Desde la buena relación que se formó con el grupo “Punto de Mira”, Surf Is Dead ha dado una serie de conciertos junto a los de Santutxu en los que han demostrado toda su potencia.

Ahora se hallan en proceso de remodelación tras la marcha de Fermín pero seguro que no pierden un ápice de su calidad.

Imparable y en continuo crecimiento. El metro continúa su proceso de expansión por las entrañas del Bilbao metropolitano y los alrededores. Más estaciones, más coches… y también más espacio para guardar los convoyes y limpiarlos. Hace tres años se inauguraron las modernas instalaciones de cocheras de Ariz, en Basauri, con diecisiete vías. En doce de ellas ‘duermen’ las unidades de metro que no están en servicio y las cinco restantes se destinan a talleres para reparaciones. Además, una vía en el exterior se utiliza para el lavado de los trenes. Pero en las cocheras queda espacio para más y el próximo año se añadirán doce nuevas vías.

Las instalaciones actuales se han quedado pequeñas. Más aún cuando entren en funcionamiento las futuras estaciones de Basauri –el suburbano llegará en la primavera de 2010– y Kabiezes –lo hará en 2012– y aumente de manera considerable el número de unidades. En la actualidad circulan por el subsuelo vizcaíno cerca de 40 trenes, pero próximamente el parque tendrá que ser reforzado para poder mantener las frecuencias actuales en todas las líneas.

Con la reforma de las cocheras de Ariz se pasará de 17 a 29 vías, casi el doble. Los nuevos carriles se dedicarán por completo al estacionamiento de las unidades, ya que para talleres basta con los cinco que hay ahora. En la actualidad, las labores de mantenimiento se reparten entre las dos cocheras que existen en Vizcaya: Basauri y Sopelana. En el complejo de Ariz se realizan las reparaciones eléctricas y electrónicas, mientras que las labores mecánicas se llevan a cabo en las instalaciones de Sopelana, más pequeñas y más antiguas que cuentan únicamente con siete vías para guardar trenes y otras siete de talleres. En ambos recintos, los operarios de Metro Bilbao se ocupan tanto de los trabajos de prevención de fallos en los convoyes como del arreglo de las averías puntuales que estos presenten.

Además de incrementar el número de vías en el recinto de Basauri, se aprovecharán los trabajos para amoldar las instalaciones existentes al quinto coche. Esta adaptación implicará ‘estirar’ los diecisiete carriles actuales para que quepan todas las unidades que ahora circulan. Habrá que alargar tanto las vías de estacionamiento como las destinadas a reparaciones. También las propias cocheras –una gran nave de estructura metálica de 128 metros de longitud y casi 10 metros de altura– tendrán que ampliar sus dimensiones para que quepan las nuevas vías.

La sociedad pública espera que las obras puedan comenzar a principios de 2010 y que estén finalizadas en algo más de medio año. La reforma de Ariz tiene un presupuesto de 4,7 millones de euros. Una partida que ha experimentado un drástico recorte, ya que Metro Bilbao había anunciado que costarían 8 millones. En este complejo se han invertido un total de 39 millones de euros, 35 para su construcción, hace tres años, y los restantes en esta inyección ‘extra’ para ampliarlo.

La compétition a repris à Sopelana et devrait pouvoir s’achever durant le week end.
La houle n’est certes pas impressionnante mais devrait permettre de quoi tenir toutes les séries d’ici demain.

Le premier jour de compétition à Sopelana a été reporté pour simple cause de “PAS DE VAGUES”, la mer ressemblant à un joli lac Parisien.
La météo surf promet une hausse de la houle dans la nuit, sans doute de quoi lancer les séries du premier tour. A suivre…

L’étape Espagnole de Sopelana est toujours en attente de conditions suffisantes pour permettre aux pros de s’exprimer.
Une augmentation de la houle est prévue en fin de semaine, ce qui devrait permettre de lancer les premières séries.

Lors de la conférence de presse à Bilbao, Jeff Hubbard a parfaitement résumé la situation concernant les petites conditions du Viana Pro :
“We are all just as passionate about surfing the small beach-breaks as we are the reef breaks of Hawaii or Chile so when you win, where ever it is, the feeling and the points are the same”

So, in order to enjoy a little bit of the Christmas season, that which I am missing out on (decorating the Christmas tree, eggnog, Santa Claus, etc.) I made Christmas cards.  They are really pretty and I have tried to send as many as I could (afford) to you all, but alas, I am no rich girl.
I miss pumpkin spice lattes.

It still hasn’t stopped raining and I don’t think it ever will.   Everyone here keeps saying this weather is really abnormal, but I don’t believe them.
This week I decided I don’t want to put any effort into teaching, so it is Season 2, Episode 6, The Christmakkuh that Almost Wasn’t The O.C. every class, every hour, regardless of level, with English subtitles.  Take that el gobierno de España!

Oh, and I am legal now, I have a foriegn identification number and everything, so I cannot be deported.

Well, it did stop raining for a few days this past week, okay a few hours, and so I was able to enjoy a little hike and watch the die-hard surfers enjoy the lack of rainfall.

Last week I saw two movies and they both were horrible (Red de Mentiras and the lastest James Bond).  I really missed going to the theatre though, so I stuck it out and enjoyed eating my popcorn, which wasn’t as good as the popcorn in the US of A!

I taugh my classes and went to the printshop, although I didn’t spend as much time in there as a should of due to a late night before, but this week I will make up for it.  I am actually moving to the center of Bilbao in January, so hopefully I can go to the printshop everyday or at least more often and really start to work on my art.  You can see some recent work here, but it still isn’t coming out—I need to give myself some more time.

I finally feel situated here, but now I am going to have to move and do all that kind of stuff all over again, although it should be much easier this time, now that I have friends and actually know how to do things here.  I am looking forward to the change, and being able to like go out and buy groceries without having to take a taxi.  I am so broke.

My sister is coming to visit me next week and I am extremely excited to have her here.  I miss all my family and friends and I wish everyone could come visit;  seeing Val will be the best Christmas present ever.   My best friend Alyssa was also supposed to come, but due to a really horrible family death, she cannot.

I finally got a library card here, only to find an extreme lack of any books in English.  So, I need to really focus on learning Spanish.  You would think it would be super fácil, being in Spain and all, but it is surprisingly easy to coast with my less-than-half-fluency.  And everyone wants to practice English with me, so that makes it worse.  But, I think I am slowly but surely improving, poco a poco.

I made another attempt at tortilla, and failed of course.  It may look okay, but it tasted terrible.  My flatmate and friend assured me.

What else, well I took a pretty picture of Bilbao at night on Sunday evening because my friend and I spent the two hours walking around (we only could due to the pause in rain) because all the movie tickets were sold out.  Evidently that is what everyone does on the eve of a  holy day of obligation aka national holiday.
