Emak

Membaca novel Emak karya Daoed Joesoef itu ibarat membaca sebuah cerita yang jika tidak beranjak dari kisah hidup penulis sesungguhnya, terasa ‘too good to be true’.

The Left Bank is synonymous with literary cafes, the Existential philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, bourgeois art galleries and gauche chic designers like Yves Saint Laurent and Sonia Rykiel. Nowadays, the philosophers may have decamped from the Café de Flore, but there are still plenty of students from the Sorbonne university and academic bookshops to keep up its ‘intellectual’ atmosphere.

On one of our many Paris visits last year, Steven and I stayed at the Hotel Design Sorbonne, which is just a few steps away from the Boulevard Saint Germain, the Pantheon, Luxembourg Gardens, the Seine and of course, the Sorbonne.

The hotel is tucked away on a peaceful side street and is accessed by a quaint courtyard. The reception/lounge area is a mix of a typical French salon interior and bold, contemporary colours, flock wallpaper and striped velvet seating. There are a number of coffee table books, magazines and Paris attraction maps, as well as an iMac for web browsing.

The corridor looks like something surreal from a Jeunet and Caro film, with custers of quirky photographs and lines of poetry emblazoned on the carpet.

Our room had a dark, romantic atmosphere due to colour scheme of chartreuse, silver and black – even curtains and doors were black! The bed was extremely comfy, with fluffy pillows, crisp cotton linen and a throw in complementing colours.

The bathroom had beautiful dusky brown and gold flock tiles but was pretty tiny, although I’ve heard that they have rooms with larger ones if you’re staying for longer and need more space.

Like most forward-thinking hotel, they have installed an Apple iMac in each room, so you can access the web and watch TV and DVDs without hassle. It seems that hotels now want to give guests a more homely experience, rather than leaving us detached from the world, charging guests 10 Euros a day for using wifi. It also eases them off unnecessary concierge duties!

We ate breakfast outside and tried out the bakeries around the rue de Buci for a croissant and café crème, although the breakfast room at the hotel looked delicious.

One thing that impressed me most about the hotel is that they have since kept in touch by email and regularly report on their fabulous meanderings around the city on their Paris newsblog. I had serious food envy over their tasting session of mille-feuilles by legendary Paris pâtissier, Pierre Hermé and am planning to eat at La Bouche, a laid-back restaurant with innovative cuisine in Ménilmontant, which they visited and recommended.

Hotel Design Sorbonne is part of the Hôtels de Paris Rive Gauche group, that runs three other boutique hotels on the Left Bank, with the hotly anticipated BJ luxury design hotel (formerly the Hotel Ferrandi) opening next Autumn. If you want a ‘home away from home’ or a more private stay, they also have a designer studio in the Marais, a bijou apartment by the Canal Saint Martin for up to four people and a luxury apartment in the Mouffetard area.

Hotel Design Sorbonne is the perfect base for Paris newbies, as it is within walking distance of the chic designer shops on the Boulvard Saint Germain, the buzzy Latin Quarter, the markets on Rue Mouffetard and of course, the Seine. The hotel is quiet at night due to its side street position, so if it’s all about getting up and out in the morning, you’re pretty much guaranteed a good night’s sleep.

Rates range from 100 – 350 Euros per night and a continental buffet breakfast is 12 Euros.

Another precious book–Madame Curie, A Biography by Eve Curie, first published in 1937, translated to English by Vincent Sheen. The cover has a picture of Madame Curie–a serious woman looking directly at the camera. Inside there is a portrait of her made in 1929, when she was 62 years old. Apparently, Eve Curie didn’t become a scientist like her father, mother and sister, but she brought her family, especially mother, to life in this book. Every page was radiant like the radium to which Madame Curie devoted her entire life.

Sursa informaţiilor biografice: Articolul Hans Kelsen, Wikipedia.

: museum.

The past week was a sight for sore eyes (if such things exist in Paris), as this ancienne étudiante of art history hit up the Musée du Louvre and Paris’ center for l’art contemporain, the 104.

L’année passée, when I was in Paris, I was taking cours en l’histoire de l’art at the Sorbonne (Paris IV), so I’ve actually already been to the Louvre upwards of 25 times or so, but I love going with a visite guidée because I’m bound to see things I haven’t previously noticed or found particularly interesting. Plus, thanks to the fact that Napoleon a volé an astounding number of incomparable oeuvres from different countries around the world, you’ll not likely to ever feel that you’ve exhausted the ressources ésthetiques that the Louvre has to offer (and Francois Ier’s commandes aren’t hurting the collection either).

On trip no. 1 to the Louvre, our professeur decided to take us through the Italian painting collections. Here you’ll find Giotto, Da Vinci, Raphael, et Caravaggio, but an unexpected addition to the early Italian paintings collection (housed in the Salon de Peinture historically used for the annual exhibits organized by the Académie royale de peinture et sculpture) was a contemporary work by Pierre Soulages. This isn’t the first time that contemporary art has invaded the Louvre or the nearby gardens. (Two examples I recall are those of spring ‘08 : the famous exposition of Louise Bourgeois‘ giant spider in the Tuileries and Jan Fabre’s invasion of the Northern Schools’ galleries.) The unlikely juxtaposition of Soulage is (like it was for Bourgeois) a reference to his current retrospective at Centre Pompidou.

Another less-predictable aspect of our 1st evening at the Louvre was a visit to the african art galleries, said to be “inaugurées” by former president Jacques Chirac…which according to our prof. essentially means that he forced the conservateurs at the Louvre to add African art to the heavily occidental collections. My favorite work in these galleries was a lanky wood-carved statue (which despite it’s nearly anorexic silhouette was sporting perky curves in all the right places).

Our next Louvre visit primarily focused on the two cours de sculpture (Marly & Puget), formerly outside areas of the palais which have since been turned into green-house-like pavilions. We visited the sculpture of Voltaire by Pigalle, scandalous for depicting an old man in the style of hunky war heroes, as well as the galleries of small sculpture, created to gain éntrée to the annual salons. But probably my favorite sculpture moment was when my fairly proper professor turned to us and said “Ah! (Oh! It’s getting a bit hot, isn’t it?). This delightful joke was referencing a work where a satyr was aggressively taking advantage of his woman of choice (though from the look on her face, she didn’t seem to mind one bit).

The day after our 2nd Louvre visit, I went to the CENTQUATRE a contemporary art and cultural center located in the 19th arrondissement, for a conference discussing art and cuisine. The space was actually gorgeous, home to the former city funeral services, and offered an array of funky, wacky, and kitschy items to peruse at your leisure. However, the most interesting artistic element of the conference was an intervention by Philippe Mayaux, sculpteur who in 2006 had an exhibition called “Hors d’oeuvres” featuring a series Savoureux de toi (literally “tasting/appetizing of you”). To create this series he sculpted different parts of of his wife’s body in chocolate and then reassembled them in a manner resembling the typical goodies you would find at a local pastry shop (only made of fingers, bones, and genitals, among other body parts). And yes, every piece of work was 100% comestible. As a lover of food and a peruser of wacky conceptual art, this was clearly the highlight (or at least the most intriguing encounter) of my semaine of art outings.

October 17th 2009 saw the end of one of the most significant contributions to the antiprohibitionist fronts in Spain and Europe of the past decade. Gaspar Fraga González, founder and director of Cañamo magazine, shed his mortal coil and peacefully departed on his final trip, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 65. His long battle with cancer had broken his body, but not his will. As the Commander of the Cañamo vessel, he stood at the helm until the very end, inspiring those around him with his strength and determination in the face of adversity. His remains were put to rest in his beloved city of Barcelona to the music of his also beloved Frank Zappa and the adulations of the many present. He is survived by his two wifes, Sara and Mari Carmen, his daughter Lidia, two grandchildren, and many loving friends.

The passing of Gaspar Fraga marks the end of an era that began in 1997 when the first issue of Cañamo hit the stands and became an immediate hit. Over the course of 142 issues and 12 years, Gaspar became the face of pro-cannabis antiprohibitionism in Spain and abroad, and worked actively in promoting the magazine’s stated goal of normalization by means of information, producing a huge body of written work between articles, research and his contributions to the Cannabis Cafe online community. He also contributed actively with European drug law reform group ENCOD and was often called upon to appear on TV to counter the anti-drug spokespeople, which he did with such demolishing efficiency that they often ended up agreeing with him.

Gaspar Fraga was a scholar of great eruditeness trapped in the body of a charming and boyish rebel to the bone. For many years, he was a rebel without a cause, banned from his native city of Madrid by the Franco regime for being a young long hair with a bad attitude. He went to Paris and studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, worked as a, paparazzi, model, current and fashion photographer and journalist and tossed pavement in May of 68. In 1970 he moved to Barcelona, to the neighborhood of Gràcia, where he became actively involved in the city’s flourishing counterculture as the editor of the underground Rock Comix, and in the 80s he made a decisive contribution to recovering the traditional festivities of Gràcia, which today congregate over a million people over the course of nine days every August.

But it was Cañamo that truly gave cause to his rebellion. Under his guidance, the impact of the magazine has gone further and longer than anyone could have expected. As Commander of Cañamo, Gaspar brought us to the very moment of truth, but for reasons known only to the higher powers, has left us to take this historic step without him. His legacy is now ours to uphold, and he was confident we can. Rest in peace, dear friend, we will not let you down.

Daoed Joesoef alumnus Universite Pluridisciplinaires Pantheon-Sorbonne Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudho

Daoed Joesoef
alumnus Universite Pluridisciplinaires Pantheon-Sorbonne

Maka, marilah kita menyilangkan jari, let us cross our fingers, sambil berdoa menurut kepercayaan masing-masing, agar kinerja putra-putri “pilihan terbaik” itu tidak gagal.

ok so i left home (Paris) at 9h30 am and arrived home (Stockholm) at 7h pm. I took 2 buses, 1 train, 3 subways, 2 planes in 36hours and i’m exhausted ! Really and truly tired and feeling a little..bla. My mom picked me up at the airport yesterday morning at 9am, we had a great FRENCH breakfast at home, my puppy recognized me ! but he’s so big, he’s not a puppy anymore ! Then we spent the day in Paris shopping for new shoes, having hot chocolate and cookies at Starbucks…it was awesome.

At 6pm we met in front of La Sorbonne Panthéon with my friends and parents. Ok so we didn’t have gowns and hats, i was a little disapointed but guys suited up and well, so did girls. It was nice. We were called one by one to grab our diploma, and i reached my personal goal, “AB mention” Then we had champagne and petits fours, it was fun to talk to everyone again, most of them are looking for jobs so im feeling super lucky i found this one. After a while my parents grew bored and we went out for diner with my sister. Before going to bed i watched the most disturbing docummentary about the revival of the KKK in the US… some people are so scary. And before i knew it it was wednesday morning and i had to leave

I’m back with 2 new pairs of shoes, a new beret, new gloves and a borrowed sweater i need to show you guys soon. But for now the plan is :

la semaine du goût: literally, “the week of taste”; a week-long, nation-wide celebration

la semaine du goût: literally, “the week of taste”; a week-long, nation-wide celebration of gastronomie in France

So this week is essential one des rêves, as all of France is mobilizing to celebrate, recognize, and raise awareness about the importance of l’alimentation. I’ve already spent the last two days in a 9-5 (or so) colloque at the Sorbonne, listening to presentations about restauration with examples from all over the world. Everything from Slow Food in Japan to restaurants haut de gamme in Brazil, and French fusion in New York. Not to mention the talks about food in France itself.

But of all the talks given, the one which struck me the most mentioned bistronomie, a fairly new movement in french cuisine where chefs decide ils en ont marre des étoiles Michelin. With about 30 recognized nouveau bistros of this type in Paris (y compris le Comptoir de Relais, L’Os à Moelle, Le Beurre Noisette, Le Violon d’Ingres…) this means high quality, creative, and less “froo-froo” food…all at a prix serré. I’ve heard about bistronomie before, but after this talk- being that I’m interested in analyzing French food criticism- I’m thinking this might be a fun era of focus.

But for those who are hoping for something a little less académique, of course the week has something for you as well.

Yesterday night, I took a cours gratuit at the Cordon Bleu. We watched chef Jean-Jacques demonstrate proper dacquois-making technique, and then got to déguster these beautiful pastries (we were worried that they would get sold in some secret Cordon Bleu bake-shop as opposed to entering our famished bouches). At the end of the class, even the regular students were so excited that there was literally a pastry paparazzi.

Then today, chef Gérard Cagna, a 2 étoile Michelin chef, presented his food “show” (yes, they used the word show) in one of the amphitheatres of the Sorbonne géographie building on Rue Saint Jacques. After experimenting with the limited cooking tools that most students are equipped with (quelques casseroles, des plaques électriques, et un micro-onde) he demonstrated how to cook simple, but delicious and elegant food at home. But better than the risotto-making tips and ridiculously impressive chopping, we got to leave with a pochette surprise full of kitchen ware like un fouet, une cuillère en bois, and un éplucheur.

The week’s still not over, and I’m definitely excited for the the Marché de Rue de Levis in the 17e from Thursday-Saturday and my restaurant reservation at l’Epi Dupin, a resto bistronomique in the 6e.

Bon appétit!

—vocabulaire—

des rêves > of dreams

l’alimentation > the act of eating

colloque > colloquium

restauration > restaurant/food business

haut de gamme > high end

bistronomie > bistro-gastronomie, a revival of elegant, simple, fresh cuisine

ils en ont marre des étoiles Michelin > are sick of Michelin stars

y compris > (here) included

prix serré > lowered prices (literally “tightened prices”)

académique > academic

cours gratuit > free course

Cordon Bleu > famous French culinary school

dacquois > a pastry base made from egg whites and sugar, kind of a compromise between a cake and a meringue

déguster > taste

bouches > mouths

géographie > geography (these studies include l’alimentation, and the link between food and geography)

quelques casseroles, des plaques électriques, et un micro-onde > some pots, hot plates, and a microwave

pochette surprise > goodie bag

un fouet, une cuillère en bois, and un éplucheur > a whisk, a wooden spoon, and a (potato/carrot) peeler

resto bistronomique > restaurant in the bistronomic tradition

Wow. I am going to try very hard to refrain from drenching this post in hyperbole (good start, I kno

Wow.

I am going to try very hard to refrain from drenching this post in hyperbole (good start, I know), but Paris was absolutely amazing. On the train ride up from Aix I began to worry that after 10 years of putting Paris on a pedastal it wouldn’t even come close to meeting my expectations. Well, it did. And while I know that part of what made last weekend awesome was finally seeing my friends and my girlfriend again, I really did fall in love with the city.

THURSDAY

The four of us finally met up at the hotel late Thursday night (after some stressful travel all around) and basically just crashed. Our hotel was in Saint Denis, a city just north of the official Paris city limits that could hardly be called inviting. But it was a cheap place for us to stay, so it worked.

FRIDAY

We left the hotel around 9 in the morning, hopped on the Metro and got off at the Champs-Élysées. About 45 seconds after exiting the station we came across some ornate ceremony outside one of Paris’ countless palatial buildings. There was an orchestra/band dressed in full formal wear and a steady stream of well-dressed people walking a red carpet into the building. Probably a state function or ceremony, but I like to think the music was welcoming us to the city. We all felt like the city was pretty quiet for a Friday morning. There weren’t a lot of people or cars out, and with a few expections it was like that all weekend.

For our first destination, we walked to the Eiffel Tower. ‘Walking’ really was the word of the day. We walked and walked and walked and walked. I don’t have a distance estimate, but it was impressive. As was the Eiffel Tower. We didn’t go up (college students on a budget) but just hanging out by it and walking under it was cool. Less cool was the horde of salesmen pushing little metal and plastic Towers. There must have been 25-30 there, all selling identitcal products. I suppose every major tourist desintation has silimilary comical side effects, but this was particularly striking.

After the Tower we walked along the Seine to Notre Dame Cathedral. It was as imposing and regal as you’d expect a renowned Gothic cathedral to be, especially the ornate entrance and doors. But at the same time, I felt like like the National Cathedral and National Basilica in Washington, DC were just as impressive. Then I thought about the history – Notre Dame has seen so much; walking its floors means walking the same ground millions have walked on for centuries. After our tour we found a nice café and had lunch facing the Cathedral. It felt very Parisian, even if the streets were still curiously empty.

After that we walked to the Latin Quarter, which was my favorite neighborhood of the weekend. There, we saw the Sorbonne (France’s Harvard), the Pantheon (final resting place of Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Louis Pasteur, Pierre et Marie Curie and other “great men” of France) and the Luxembourg Gardens. We stayed in the gardens for almost an hour, taking a much needed break. It has a very different feel than Central Park (more stately, less of a relaxed feeling), but it was a very tranquil place to watch life go by.

After recharging our batteries we walked to the Louvre, which has free admission on Friday nights for people under 26. Because it was a Friday night, the musem wasn’t overcrowded, which was great. It was also very cool to be there at night, which made it seem “more mysterious and spectacular,” as Becca said. We didn’t come close to seeing everything (that would take at least a full day), but I saw the pieces I most wanted to see: “Liberty Leading the People,” “Mona Lisa” and the “Code of Hammurabi.”

Following the Louvre we staggered towards dinner, exhausted from walking the heart of Paris. I had a great salad of lettuce, three cheeses, ham, artichoke, tomatoes and copious amounts of olive oil.

SATURDAY

We slept in – we had earned it. Then we took the train to Versailles around 11. Oh. My. Goodness. If there is a more decadent place on earth, I’d like to see it. The royal bedrooms and Hall of Mirrors in particular made my jaw drop and my stomach turn. I’d have revolted too if my leaders lived like that.

We went back to the hotel for an afternoon nap then got ready for our last night in Paris. We found a restaurant near the Champs-Élysées, which was the concensus favorite meal of the weekend. I had the best duck of my life, supplemented by excellent scalloped potatoes and the requisite bread with olive oil. Afterwards we walked the Champs, which felt like a classier, less exciting Times Square. We ended up at the Arc de Triomphe, which was so beautiful at night that we decided to trek back to the Eiffel Tower to see it illuminated. Good move on our part. While the Tower was impressive during the day, it was inspiring at night. Paris does a great job with the lighting, alternating beween a mellow golden hue and a dazzling 5 minute blitz of flashing lights that occurs every hour or so.

SUNDAY

We had breakfast in a café facing the Musée d’Orsay, which was where I said my goodbyes. I was the first to leave, and it was especially hard to say goodbye to Chris and Becca, who I won’t see until the summer. I’ll be seeing Heather at least once more this semester. So it was back on the TGV (France’s high speed train) for me. I spent the southbound ride doing homework and feeling a bit lonely, but when I got to Aix I felt like I was coming home, which was a very pleasant surprise. And when I got back to the house Odile had a chocolate cake waiting for me. Life is good.

P.S.

I ordered a new computer, so I should be able to start putting pictures up again in a little over a week.

A plan to make 4,000 electric cars available for Parisians to pick up and drop off at rental stands still has some kinks to be worked out.

Could the City of Lights soon become the City of Electric Cars? Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë, building on the success of the city’s popular Vélib curbside bike rental scheme, is planning to deploy a fleet of 2,000 electric cars that customers can pick up and drop off at rental stands around the city. Another 2,000 vehicles will be offered in two dozen surrounding cities.

The green scheme, dubbed Autolib (short for “automobile” and “liberté”), is scheduled for launch as early as the end of 2010, although city officials say the startup date could be closer to mid-2011. Advocates say the system would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 22,000 tons a year while improving traffic congestion as fewer Paris residents would need to own cars. It would be the first major city to offer such a service. “This could revolutionize transport,” Delanoë told French radio station RMC when he first proposed the program in June 2008… Read more (by Leona Liu, Spiegel)
