If you are anything like me I had a bag of cords that were all tangled together, I didn’t know what cord belonged to what and the effort of ever finding or untangling one was a task too daunting (I wish I had taken a before photo). One of the mantras from The Happiness Project was about DO IT NOW! The bag of cords often frustrated me so I decided to DO IT NOW! and I went in search of a solution.

The are many options out there however what I found quick, easy and cost effective was buying some sandwich size snap-lock bags. I placed each cord inside and labeled it. The cords are now all separated and untangled and I know what they are all for! I think I must have thrown out at least five cords for cameras and cellphones we no longer had. A de-cluttering job that can be done while watching TV. And believe me the time spent doing it is much shorter than the time you spend in the future trying to find and untangle those cords.

Take Control of Your Gmail Email – Using Filters in Gmail To Organize Redirect and Control You

Take Control of Your Gmail Email – Using Filters in Gmail To Organize Redirect and Control Your Email Better

I love Gmail for many reasons. Of the many reasons, I love the fact that Gmail allows you to organize, redirect, and take control of your email better than any other cloud based email service or webmail.

Here are some instructions on how to set this up, organize your email better, and setup how email flows into folders etc.:

Using filters

Gmail’s filters allow you to manage the flow of incoming messages. Using filters, you can automatically label, archive, delete, star, or forward your mail, even keep it out of Spam.

To create a filter

Click the down arrow in your search box. A window that allows you to specify your search criteria will appear.
Enter your search criteria. If you want to check that your search worked correctly, click the search button.
Click Create filter with this search at the bottom of the search window. If you need to verify the search results, you can click the x to collapse the filter options. Clicking the down arrow again will bring the window back with the same search criteria you entered.
Choose the action(s) you want the filter to take.

To keep organized, many people like to have incoming messages automatically labeled and removed from their inbox until they can look at them later at a more convenient time. If you want to do this, make sure to select Skip the Inbox (Archive it) and Apply the label: when you create your filter.

Click the Create filter button.

Please note: When you create a filter to forward messages, only new messages will be affected. Any existing messages that the filter applies to will not be forwarded.

To use a particular message to create a filter

Select the message in your message list.
Click the More button, then Filter messages like these.
Enter your filter criteria in the appropriate field(s).

To edit or delete existing filters

Click the gear icon in the upper right, then select Settings.
Click the Filters tab.
Find the filter you’d like to change and click edit or delete to remove the filter.
If you’re editing the filter, enter the updated criteria for the filter in the appropriate fields, and click Edit filter actions.
Update any actions and click the Update filter button.

You can create an unlimited number of filters, but only 20 filters can forward to other addresses. You can maximize your filtered forwarding by combining filters that send to the same address.

To export or import filters

If you’re a filter pro and have a great filter system that you want to use in another account or share with a friend, you can export and import filters.

Click the gear icon in the upper right, then select Settings.
Click the Filters tab.

To export a filter, check the box next to the filter, and click the Export button at the bottom of the page. This will give you a .xml file, which you can edit in a text editor if you’d like.

To import a filter, click the Import filters link at the bottom of the page. Choose the file with the filter you’d like to import and click the Open file button.

Click the Create filters to finish importing the filter.

I hope that helped you!

Wishing you Health Wealth and Happiness!

Tonight was meant to be opening night, it was going to be the grand première. Instead I’m breathing a sigh of relief as it’s been changed to a final dress rehearsal which is handy because the original dress rehearsal happened while I was busy in New York.

Why should I panic though? Surely at this late stage all exeunt are sorted and the appropriate bear pursuant are arranged? Of course I’m prepared, Jeremy Irons would sing a song about it then be concerned about fathers marrying their sons, with only one exception. It’s the same problem I have with every play, I am still struggling with learning my lines.

It’s not that I don’t try to learn them, it’s that I seem to have problem with remembering stuff that isn’t in front of my face. I look at the words in the script and of course I remember what I’m meant to say and where my cue lines are. Take that piece of paper from me in mid sentence and “poof” it’s gone.

I find that when learning my lines I have to memorise the whole play rather than just my part, and act it out in part silent monologue. I say my lines out loud and, even when my fellow actors are reciting their’s, go through the other parts in my mind.

I’ve tried reading a script constantly to make it sink in, having it on a loop playing in my ear holes, going through it nightly with others. No matter what I do when learning my lines I still get to the opening night confident that nothing I am about to say was written by the playwright.

I can remember fairly lengthy pieces of dialogue, these seem to be fine as you can wing it a bit in the middle and as long as the general gist is there you can get away with it. All you need to do is make sure that the final sentence is correct to be able to give your fellow thespians their correct cue. That’s just performance courtesy.

Where I struggle is with small interuptions, should I be saying “What!” or “You” at this point in time? Do I tell the other person to “sit down” or “stay quiet”, I’m sure it’s “sit down” but why aren’t they standing up? Did I forget to tell them to “stay quiet” so they didn’t get out of the chair to protest.

This may be down to the difficulty I have saying other people’s words. I’m okay with remembering my own writings but when I have to speak in a voice that is unfamiliar from my own I struggle. Maybe this is why the “method” actors get so deep into their characters, then it becomes more natural to recite the prose. As a full-time data analyst I’m not sure though that my boss will be too happy with me being a burglar or a cross-dressing pylon repair man.

Thankfully by the time it get’s to opening night the worry that I have not learnt anything becomes resignation that it is all going to go wrong, so I just relax and enjoy the moment. I step onto the stage in a trance and next thing I know I am taking a bow and the audience applause. As soon as I am confronted by the lights my conscious brain switches off and instinct takes over, and I realise I got everything right.

It seems my sub-conscious is much better at learning my lines than me.

Passou a segunda e chegou a terça!

Granted there are no ancient castles or monuments that have lasted centuries but it is a city that is dedicated to modernity, these buildings were not created by monarchs or rulers looking to cement their legacies, these were built by business and commerce.

The buildings in New York are places to work and to make money, they are monuments to capitalism. Everything about American buildings screams “I made this” and it shows by the mishmash of building styles that can be seen down any street.

Coming from England I am used to a certain uniformity to my buildings. Town centres will have a collection of shops that are all built in a similar style, and housing areas have been built to all look fairly homogenous. There is variety but not on the scale I can see on one block in America. Every plot where Mrs G lived seems to have a different looking building, if somewhat in the colonial style, with no coherent plan to how a street should look.

I asked Mrs G why this was the case and she explained that it was the case in the past that families would by the plot of land and then get to building their house, and this makes sense. In Europe ownership of land was always in the hands of the powerful (whether the crown, government or rich) so it would be them who built new houses. For them it would make economic sense to build multiple buildings all in the same style to keep down costs.

In the land of opportunity where ordinary people were able to build their own home they would choose something that suited them, and if you wanted more windows or a steeper gabled roof then you could choose to do so.

This variety is also on display in the city. Unlike London or Paris with their long boulevards full of old buildings, Manhattan has never really been constrained by central planning. It was businessmen who commissioned the skyscrapers and why would you want something that looked like you closest rival? The men behind the Empire State and Chrysler buildings did not just compete to build the tallest building in the world, they competed to outshine each other.

I’m a bit biased here, the Chrysler building is among my favourite buildings in the world. Slowly I am starting to favour the Rockefeller Centre, the complex of buildings that incorporates Radio City, the GE building at 30 Rock, the skating rink and all the outlying buildings. Together they form a tribute to the modern age, whether it is in providing a home for entertainment or business, the buildings are a testament to a vision of what humanity can be. The statues honouring Atlas holding the world and Prometheus giving fire to mankind are an attempt to give capitalism spirituality.

As with Europe, religion is everywhere and all the various denominations of world faiths are found with their various styles of architectural worship. Flamboyant catholic churches and more simple protestant churches (whether Methodist, Lutheran or all the other various creeds) are every few blocks with their street signs indicating whether this is a Korean, Greek or Russian area.

Yet among this cornucopia of buildings there seems to be a worrying change, the need to become more conformed. Near the Rockefeller centre are a row of multi-national buildings that rely on the tried an trusted formula of glass and steel rectangular boxes. These are constructions by committee and show no ambition, they have been placed by developers to maximise square footage with no care to how they contribute to the cityscape.

Perhaps this is just the next step of capitalist architecture? That just as cities and towns become collections of Starbucks and McDonalds at street level, so the buildings above them will become the same. With only a few buildings daring to be different with silly names like the Gherkin in London.

New York is a strange city in that it is much more interesting above street level, the tops of the older buildings are plastered with old and faded adverts and encrusted with art-deco finishes. Yet it is not a city designed to allow you to stop and look up, if you do you will quickly be drowned in a sea of tutting as those going around their business get annoyed that you should stop and observe.

This may the great sadness of these buildings, they were built by people who wanted them to be different, to be seen, yet today nobody stops to look.

The April Martha Stewart Living magazine proposed an approach to cleaning out a clothes closet. Much

The April Martha Stewart Living magazine proposed an approach to cleaning out a clothes closet. Much like my place of employment’s lean methodology, the goal is to sort, simplify, standardize and sweep (the 5S’s). Looking for some motivation to overhaul the closet and a need to find a particular black tank top, I gave it a shot. Besides, gives me something to blog about that isn’t cooking, as it seems to have been the theme lately.

Key Points:

It’s all got to come out

Create clear piles to sort into

Be realistic

Enjoy the journey

Thoughts:

I liked Martha’s piles to get started but found that for “Store”, instead of piling, I just took it to its new storage place.

I also didn’t use the “Keep” pile for the whole process. After I got going, I just sorted straight from my bed (The Pile) and put away.

Using polka dot paper was a great inspiration and fun to color code

Repair also included “clean” for things like hand bags and sweaters

Give away ended up being two piles, one for Goodwill and for the nicer items, either consignment or for an appreciative friend

Steps:

Unload your whole closet. Consider pulling in clothes from drawers and maybe closets in other rooms, as I did

Pile it in one place for emphasis (pronounced em – FA – sis not EM – fa – sis)

Vacuum, wipe down all surfaces, clean baseboards etc. I was surprise by the dust bunnies

Put it all back in, critically appraising each item as to its fate: store, repair, keep, toss, give away

Keep a nice steady pace and if you get hung up, just put something to the side and come back too

Clean out your purses too: always plenty of garbage, enough hair ties for the year and $3.57 in change

Try on things if you aren’t sure they fit. Be honest – did you really ever fit into that?

Change out your hangers to get rid of those dry cleaner hangers that accumulate

Be on the look out for treasures: I found my Mrs. Knight puffy pain t-shirt from a NKOTB concert a few years ago (squeal!!) and a pig ear, apparently “hid” in my pj drawer

Finito! All put back together and sorted by color and type: Dresses, pants, tops and skirts.

Hej bloggen!

George Bernard Shaw once said: ‘England and America are two countries divided by a common language‘, and it’s not hard to see why. As soon as you talk to anyone in England about America they will generally snort and say “yeah, they call football soccer” with a heavy emphasis on the the ‘o’. This ignores the fact they they picked up the name from the right hand side of the Atlantic in the first place. (It comes from the Association part of Association Football).

For us in Britain dealing with Americanisms is very easy as we have a constant stream of programmes and movies that are in Lingua America, so we can readily link sidewalks, fall and the always humourous fanny pack, with their English English cousins. It’s not the words that form the major difference however, it’s how those words are used that forms the major part of our language confusions.

Baring the usual spelling differences, such as the fact that I am using a computer in New York so the spell check is going crazy by wanting to remove plenty of U’s and add in some extra Z’s (that’s zeds not zees), the main thing that separates our languages is the way we use it. It reflects the culture differences between our two nations.

Take the phrase “we’ll see”, for an Mrs G (an American) this means that whatever ha been asked for is going to be looked at and thought about. Yet when it’s a Brit saying this it is a polite way of saying “no”, a way to brush someone off without offending. That’s because in English English we have developed numerous ways to express our passive aggressiveness without being too forceful.

The American way is much more direct, when walking through Times Square yesterday I was full of “oh excuse mes” that sounded like I was doing something wrong in trying to get from point A to B and was sorry to inconvenience somebody else to move out of my path. Mrs G’s “excuse mes” came out like a last warning, slightly sarcastic asking why are you being such a dumbass standing in my way.

Granted these examples are from but two people from different cities and backgrounds, but I see regularly the difference between the American up and at ‘em versus the British slightly apologetic attitude. When first thinking about moving to New York one of my main worries was starting employment in the American job market, and how would the slightly bumbling, Hugh Grant-esque act of self-deprecation work over here?

In the UK we struggle with enthusiasm, and if that is matched with success that is a big no-no. So even when we want to do something really badly we will never jump forward at the start and volunteer preferring to wait to be asked at which point we will take on the task as though it will cause us great hardship. Even when the plan backfires and someone else is given the task we wanted to do we will still take it in good grace, and in all likelihood proclaim that they would do it better than us in the first place.

Perhaps this is the chasm in our shared language, despite all the words we share and slightly misspell an American says what they means whereas the British would rather not.
