I already did a post on the anti-boybands of the 90s, that is, those that were successful enough to publicly distance themselves from the tag and make the kind of music they wanted to be associated with.

these boys would probably have run with either tag. they had some success, but would most likely have sold out given a major label opportunity. virtually all of them are now in the wilderness, awol.

and these c listers would have bitten your arm off for a taste of the big time. and these z listers, i wouldn’t like to say

after 7 – can’t stop

slightly girly vocals, but a quality group. never quite bettered this, their first hit. there is a really funny old skool bootleg of this that speeds the vocals up to helium ballooon proportions, called cooking with delia. don’t ask me how i know these things…

damage – love to love

young british band from the mid 90s who were intermittently successful. everyone fancied bad boy coree, who has since been in prison. lead singer jade jones has been going out with spice girl emma bunton for about ten years, and they recently had a new baby.

dru hill – you are everything

i never really got the whole dru hill thing and sisqo, to me, is not attractive and i don’t even think he can sing. that whole thong song thing was ridiculous but did rule the summer of 2000, especially the garage remix. but i did like this track.

intro – let me be the one

fairly successful band in the early 90s – not as successful as blackstreet, not as sugary as boyz ii men and just kind of…there. which was a problem for pretty much all of the groups on this list.

next – butta love

did the whole bad boy thing far more convincingly than dru hill. ‘too close’ was of course huge, and then…i’m not sure if they still record or what?

shai – if i ever

hailed as the new boyz ii men, when they came out with this track. volume of material appeared to be a problem as this was remixed and released many times. i can just about remember two other tracks they did.

silk – hooked on you

i wonder how these groups feel when british boybands like another level take their signature tune (freak me, in this case) and have the hit they never could? i hope they get paid well, but i fear the only person who laughs all the way to the bank is the songwriter.

soul for real – every little thing

after candy rain, many people sat back and waited for a dismal sequel. to be fair, this did almost as well, perhaps better in the uk, and they squeezed out a few more hits form their debut and as far as i know only, album.

today – him or me

riding the new jack swing wave in the very early 90s, but never quite challenged teddy riley supergroup guy.

troop – sweet november

one album wonders, but this is a sweet cover version. have no idea how successful it may or may not have been in the US, but in the UK it did squat.

Happy Friday all!! By now, you’re work or school day is probably half way over, so here’s a handful of songs that are over a decade old, that just might take you on a trip down through Memory Lane and help the rest of your day go by faster. At random, posted below are five videos from Brownstone, Dr. Dre, Lil’ Kim, Soul For Real and Young MC. I’ve been doing this blog for 5 months now, and still  fun going back and listening to these old songs and watching the videos. Especially the Dr. Dre video at the 2:38 when the little toddler was getting it in to the song, lol. They need to do a “Where Are They Now?” on people who make cameos in music videos. Gotta wonder what trouble that kid is into now, lol. And looking at the Lil’ Kim video, I still have to wonder what she was thinking when she got her nose job done. The only thing she needed to do was get rid of the rainbow wigs and outfits, lol. Alright folks, go enjoy these videos and the rest of your day. I just returned from a beautifully magical weekend in Minocqua, WI. Ahhhhh….

So much blissful relaxation! I read books (‘When You’re Engulfed in Flames’ by good ol’ Sedaris), went boating, took naps, ate brats (hella mustard), drank margaritas (frozen), went running, and basked in the warm sunshine with some amazing people. What more can one ask for?

Pictures to come soon- I have to wait for Fitz to download. What is it about the 4th of July that brings families together with such joyous intentions? This is a totally underrated holiday in my book. I really felt like I was surrounded by a lot of love and high fives…it was fab. Or maybe it was just all of the margaritas???!!

Hmmm.

Let it be known that it is an amazing feeling to get away from cell phones, computers, job stress, and the rigors of day to day life. Don’t be afraid to free yourself from technology- there is no better way to commemorate the 4th!!!

after a long hiatus, ive decided to make a comeback (sort of like the reemergence of boy bands).  so let’s kick it off with a best of boy bands list and the music videos that made you (and me) swoon. ps before we get started with some of my favorite 20…im judging boy bands not off of style of music, but off the fact that none of them actually…are a band with instruments of any sort.

1. the backstreet boys. i will always love the backstreet boys more than n*sync despite my intense love for justin timberlake. before i loved justin and his smooth dancing ways, i was in love with aj mclean, brian littrell, and nick carter (howie and kevin i’m sorry, i searched for some sort of apprecation for you, but none was found. try again next time).

2. nsync. justin timberlake marry me please (even after my long hiatus, my blog brings in a large number of hits thanks to justin timberlake. people search for images of him as if he’s a relative). the rest of the group…..jc, i had a little love for you, but your solo career killed you. all of you could sort of dance (minus joey fatone who had wade robson fill in for him during a video shoot) and you had good poppy songs…too bad justin was too big for the group and went solo (and lance wanted to be an astronaut).

nsync- girlfriend ft nelly. welcome to the beginning of justin’s solo career.

3. 98 degrees. pre-jessica simpson (the newlyweds…and divorce) two brothers and two other guys came together and made 98 degrees…all were really buff…except justin.  and for the longest time i only knew nick, jeff, and drew and the other guy. but what i loved about these guys was that they could actually sing and harmonize (and they were hot). and drew lachey proved that he can dance too (dwts!)

4. lfo. not a great boy band at all. but how can i make a list of boy bands and not include the goodness that is lfo and how much they love girls that wear abercrombie and fitch (and jennifer love hewitt).

8. boyz II men- water runs dry.

9. new kids on the block- the right stuff. because you cant list boy bands without listing the one that made lfo famous (new kids on the block had a bunch of hits, chinese food makes me sick)

10. 51ve- when the lights go out.

11. the wonders- that thing you do. even if they were a made for movie band i still loved them and their record on playtone records.

12. b2k- bump bump bump. omarion pre-fame. ps. how lame does diddy look in this video when he’s checking out the picture of the girl on the phone?

13. immature- never lie. marques houston (you know…roger from sister, sister) and the boys with crazy ridic hair.

14. jackson five- i want you back. michael jackson was once cute and black (and not a pedophile).

15. westlife- swear it again.

16. o-town- all or nothing. the original group from Making the Band…pre- danity kane, day 26, donnie klang, and da band.

According to online reports, Brian Dalyrimple, member of R&B group Soul For Real, is on the run from police with his infant son in tow and is also wanted in connection with an identity theft that involves more than 200 victims.

According to Duluth, Georgia police, Brian Dalyrimple, member of R&B group Soul For Real, is apparently in connection with an identity fraud case.

With over 200 victims, whose theft total $1 million, Dalyrimple also had an accomplice Laborah Crawford, who is being held at Gwinnett County Jail.

Dalyrimple also has his 10 month old son with him.

“He was the biological father and the child was turned over to the grandmother in custody and then he went to the day care, picked him up and left with him,” said Maj. Don Woodruff with the Duluth Police Department.

Police are unsure how the two collected the victim’s information and they have no reason to believe that Dalyrimple’s son is in any danger.

An R&B quartet comprised of the four Dalyrimple brothers — Brian, Chris, Dre, and Jason — Soul for Real formed in 1992, though the siblings had spent many hours singing in their church choir. Signed to Uptown Records, Soul for Real debuted in early 1995 with Candy Rain; by the end of the year, the album had gone platinum and reached number 23 on the album charts. After touring both America and overseas, the group worked with producers Heavy D. and Sean “Puffy” Combs to record For Life. 1999 saw the release of a third album, Heat. ~ John Bush.
