Post all the food, that makes you happy, simply is good for your soul.

Ich empfehle in einem kleinen depressiven schwachen Moment den Apfelpfannkuchen meiner Tante, nebst der Kabbelei der beiden.
Das ist so herrlich erfrischend, ein bisschen wie bei Waldorf und Stetler.

Und das Abendessen war definitiv der Beweis, dass Essen gut für die Seele ist (und Familienzusammenhalt).

Geht jetzt schon besser, werde aber trotzdem früh schlafen gehen. Bin soo müde.

Jewish Heart for Africa, EZ SUN-ENERGY, and Solefood NYC cordially had a  Fundraiser on November 7th at the custom sneaker gallery’s TriBecA location, 38 Lispenard Street. The Exhibit  started at 1pm and carry on till 7pm. Followed by our evening Gala at 8:30pm.

This all day fundraiser  supports their collaborative efforts to improve the conditions in three rural African villages. The goal is to open three clinics, three schools, and provide these African villages with solar power and running water.

This event  featured African and Kosher appetizers, music and dance, and special guests including several African ambassadors.

Solefood NYC has put together a collection of products displaying the talents of their network named “Product Black”. This anticipated collection was available for sale during this event.

Brian Carson- Liquid Soul

I adore this album.  It was produced by Brian Carson for Eoin Finn’s yoga DVD, Power Yoga for Happiness Surf Edition.  This album is extremely chill, with an almost sexy bass vibe and a slow oceanic texture.  The beats aren’t heavily defined, allowing for full free flow.  This album truly gets one in “Zen zone.”      

Christopher O'Riley Plays Radiohead- True Love Waits

A good mix of beats and speeds of choice Radiohead songs, the consistency of instrument (piano) is what makes this mix perfect for yoga.  Some of the tracks can have an anxious quality, so I save this album and those tracks for the “work phase” of power vinyasa.  This album has two of my favorite songs of all time, Fake Plastic Trees and Let Down.

Afro Celt Soundsystem - Seed

VERY cool!  This band mixes Irish music with West African percussion and dance beats.  The album flows together really well, yet each song is itself creative and inventive.  The album offers various faster paced rhythms and vocals that are appropriate for my power vinyasa class.

Brooke Fraser - Albertine

Beautiful vocals and words.  This album has a gentle pop/easy listening sound.  Brooke’s voice is clear and strong.  Her lyrics balance feelings of searching and longing, and then enlightening and realizing.  The tone of the album seems to be about seeking and finding, and affirming understanding.  I love to play this particularly when my class is all ladies.

Achillea - Amadas Estrellas

Achillea is featured on the Yoga Moods and Angel’s Voices YogaFit albums, and that was the inspiration for purchasing this album.  Sensual, deep, and intriguing, each track carries a great momentum for yoga.  If you aren’t familiar with Achillea, this band has a little bit of an “Enigma” vibe.  My only gripe is that the album is quite short, so I mixed in the Achillea tracks from the YogaFit albums to round out my play list.      

Soulfood - Yoga Groove

A good mix of Eastern instrumental and electronic sounds, chanting and some lyrics…this is your basic but GOOD basic yoga sound.  This album encompasses versatile tempos with some introspective and meditative tracks, and some light, airy tracks.  I recommend this to round out any teacher or practitioner’s yoga mix.  It is a “go to” album.  About 1 hour long, it helps a teacher time class.

Dido - Safe Trip Home

Another album I like to play with ladies class, Dido’s voice is so smooth and the backbeats pump silky.  The lyrics are about a girl’s life…love, recollections, contentment, and change.  She is sweet in this album, offering simple realism over anxiety.  The mood and tempo of the collection is pretty steady which makes it good for class.  Northern Skies is an awesome track, my favorite. 

Classical Music for Meditation and Yoga

This is my most recent purchase.  After hearing a song of my heart, Claire de lune, in a recent yoga practice, I was craving some classical music to simply edit images and write to, but I happened upon this album that is great for yoga!  It got RAVE reviews in my Go with the Flow vinyasa class.

Enya - And Winter Came

I bought this album last holiday season, and it was my yoga Christmas music for 2008.  I’m excited to bring it back again soon.  I have, however, used the track Oíche Chiúin (Silent Night) for a Shavasana song all year.  What can you say about Enya?  She’s just beautiful.

Ich muss ganz ehrlich sagen, als wir bei »strictly roots«, dem veganen Restaurant in Harlem, NY, den unsere Zimmervermieterin Stepahanie uns empfohlen hat, ankamen, hatte ich mir das Ganze doch vorher ein wenig anders ausgemalt. Anders ist »Strictly Roots« auch. Aber eben nochmal anders. Anders wie Harlem. Multikulti aber bodenständig wie Harlem. Hatte ich bei Stephanies Beschreibung der karibianischen veganen Küche eher ein hippes New Yorker Restaurant in bunten Farben mit einigen Palmen erwartet, gab es hier abgesehen des auch eher spartanisch anmutenden Wandbildes »We serve nothing that crawls, swims, walks or flies« eigentlich rein gar nichts dekoratives. Imbißstühle, Imbißtische, eine Theke… Reggaemusik und drei Rastafari-Typen dahinter. Klar, das ganze ist ein Imbiß! Ein Rastafari-Imbiß eben. Denn die sind bekanntlich ja auch Veganer!

Wir wurden herzlich empfangen und bekamen liebevoll das Essen vorgestellt: Grünkohl, Süßkartoffelspeisen, schwarze Bohnen, Reis, Tofugulasch, falsche Shrimps aus irgendwas mit Kartoffel, verschiedenstes Fake-Fleisch aus Seitan, alles wahlweise kombinierbar und liebevoll zubereitet, zu moderaten Preisen… und wahnsinnig lecker! WIr kamen noch etwas ins plaudern. Ob wir Veganer seien, wollte der nette Rasta-Typ hinter der Theke wissen. Vegetarier, antworten wir. Der Typ grinste. Wenn ich Milch trinken würde, sagte er, dann könnte ich mich schon beim Trinken neben die Kloschüssel setzen. Ein wenig verblüfft war ich schon über diese Aussage. So einen arroganten Eindruck hatte er gar nicht gemacht, dass er uns gleich elitär auf die Nase binden musste wie zum Kotzen er das Trinken von Milch findet.
Ein wenig später fiel mir ein Bericht ein, den ich vor kurzem gelesen hatte und in dem es um die Hintergründe von Laktoseintoleranz ging. Als nämlich beschrieben wurde, dass die Menschen noch gar nicht so lange in der Lage seien überhaupt Milch trinken und verdauen zu können, bzw. einige Kulturen bis heute keine Milch trinken würden (was das Phänomen der LI für mich ziemlich plausibel macht), wurde mir klar was der Typ damit gemeint hatte. Er wäre gar nicht in der Lage Milch zu trinken, da er sie gar nicht vertragen würde! Ganz sicher hat er in seinem Leben noch nie so wirklich Milch getrunken! Und wahrscheinlich hat er sich in seinem Leben überhaupt noch nie von tierischen Produkten ernährt, da er aus einer Kultur kommt, die Aufgrund ihres Glaubens den Verzehr alles tierischen Ablehnen. Komisch, während wir hierzulande im Gegensatz zu unserer Kultur auf etwas verzichten, geht es hier um eine Selbstverständlichkeit, die hingegen später das Nicht-Verzichten fast unmöglich macht.
Eine Selbstverständlichkeit mit der auch dieser Imbiß existiert. Kein Schnick-Schnack, kein Ökogehabe, keine aufgesetze »WIr tun das einzig Wahre«-Attitüde. Stattdessen Bodenständigkeit, Freundlichkeit, gutes Essen, einfach Soul! Also auf nach Harlem. Und vor allem auf zu Strictly Roots, Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd (7th Ave), New York, NY 10027 und einfach freuen!

So I thought I would do an how-to blog because seriously, I think they’re cute. Today’s lesson is going to be: unwrapping an Onigiri, aka rice balls. They’re pretty awesome if you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to sit down to eat. At the local convenient stores, which are located pretty much at the corner of every street,ie, convenient, you’ll find these things for about $1. There are like 10 different types of stuffing and such. Look, you may be surprised at how technical these things get. The first time I had one, I just teared into the thing and Taka quickly remedied this fact and showed me the right way to unwrap and enjoy.

Step 1: Marvel at the beautiful triangle shape, even though they’re called rice balls. The stuffing is clearly indicated in the middle of the label. The one I have here is salmon.

Step 2: Tear down the middle by gripping the marker that says 1 at the top of triangle. It will go all the way around.

Step 3: Grip the right side of the wrapping while holding onto the left side and pull gently until separated. The nori (seaweed) will come together on it’s own.

Step 4: Now do the same to the left side of the wrapping.

Step 5: Ta da!! It’s done. There you have a perfect little triangle of goodness. Deep within lies chunks of smoked salmon waiting piously for you to reach. The salty sea taste of the nori perfectly complements the slightly neutral flavor of the rice. I’m telling you these things are amazing.

Step 6: ENJOY! I always find two to be filling.

Hopefully, one day, you too will get the chance to experience this little delightful snack called Onigiri.

I posted an epic post a couple of days ago, which spilled over onto the next day and I was meant to conclude it today.

Change of plan.

Its been deleted. Today I heard a song – this one - and for the five minutes I was listening to it, things were okay again and the world seemed like an okay kinda place. I felt at peace and nasty remarks and glances  from a certain person no longer mattered. A couple of weeks ago, I grew up and decided that I had forgiven. So then why should a person who has a two-bit version of the story, from people who have a warped idea of truth and honesty, who doesn’t even know me hurt me with their silly ways? I know the truth and people who matter to me know the truth. That’s what matters. 

Plus most of the last couple of weeks has been really fun. I’ve laughed. As in laughed-from-the-belly-laughed until my sides hurt and my eyes watered; it feels good (and reassuring in equal amount) to know that I still can. Now that things have drawn to their ‘natural close’ I’ve also had a chance to think through things and there’s been lots of food for thought… After all it has been a crazy past few weeks and a stranger-than-fiction last year.

I still can’t believe my student days are officially over and I am now a doctor. There were so many points this year that I didn’t think I would be able to sit my finals, let alone pass them. And then there was the news about Michael Jackson shortly after, which I think reminded most people (me included) just how precious and fragile life is. His music is the soundtrack to my childhood; I can put an MJ song to so many of my happy and sad memories.

I have definitely decided that I’m going to make the most of each day of my very short holiday – I start work in a hospital in 3 and a 1/2 weeks! So far, I’ve been trying to spend time with friends and family, so I’ve had some lovely meals with lovely friends (its nice to be able to enjoy food again!) and spent a day at a cricket match at Hove with my brother, spent an afternoon at the Globe watching ‘As you like it’ from box seats (first time ever for me!) which was such a sweet birthday pressie and also went to watch/listen to a friend play a gig at the Blag Club in West London. Plus its been so beautifully sunny until 10 o’clock at night that its easy to be happy
