Shure SM58 - Classic Studio Mic - http://images.thomann.de/pics/prod/105769.jpg

Everyone has had the experience of listening to themselves speaking and thought “that isn’t me!” Getting the sound you actually do recognize is an equally unfamiliar task when you first begin. The first step, obviously, is the hardware you need: a microphone (this author recommends very highly the Shure microphone portfolio of products), cables, and a stand. But what about the actual recording itself? What does you have to do to that sound you want (like when you sing in the shower or car)? Well, below are my ABCs of vocal recording:

Amplification – Most people don’t realize it until they try, but the human voice simply isn’t strong enough to compete with some like a drum set or electric guitar. The human voice needs amplification if you are to hear all the rich textures and nuances your vocalist has to offer. Most sound cards worth their salt come with Pre-Amps built in, like the Digidesign MBox, but for those that don’t you’ll have to buy an external one to place between your mic and sound card.

Balance – Audio balance is a tricky thing and applies in a couple different ways. Shure makes an SM58 microphone intended to only pick up sound within a certain area around the mic. This is excellent for live recording with many vocalists, and instruments, recording in the same space. For solo recording, however, you may want to pick up everything in the booth. In this case you’ll need to worry about balance between the voice and reverb, or any other noise in the space. The vocalist cannot be to close or to far, and the room padding shouldn’t be too absorbent or reflective. What you’ll need is balance between these elements for an authentic sounding vocal.

Compression – Possibly the most important and most difficult to manage is the problem of compression. Compression levels out the sound of the voice so that the strong part don’t hurt the listeners ear, and the soft parts can be heard. ProTools, and other production software alternatives, come with software compression built in. This requires less hardware to use but can be constricting. IZotope offers many plugins for ProTools to give you a wide variety of real-time software compression alternatives, but some still find buying a hardware compressor to be more useful. I’ve always just used the software and found it to be great.

So how does the SM58 stack up against the ABC’s of vocal recording? In my opinion it gets five starts in each category. The SM58 gives you clean sound that is free from outside noise and easily smoothed out with compressed amplification. This little mic retails for about $100 and is a must have for any home studio.

10. Computer – It seems obvious but until recently there were still some die-hards producing

10. Computer – It seems obvious but until recently there were still some die-hards producing music without the ‘impurity’ digitizing. In the last several years, however, the processing power of consumer PCs has made tremendous production capability possible at a price point most can afford. The latest generation software and hardware available for ammeter music producers is not only affordable but compatible with most home computers.

9. Sound Card – Regardless of what your creating your music on (piano, vocals, electric guitar, etc) your going to need a good sound card to get everything into digital format. There are many alternatives if you’re building a studio from scratch but for the less brave there are software/hardware bundles (such as ProTool and MBox) that give you everything you need.

8. Cables – Many enthusiasts debate over whether or not one needs to pay the market for Monster Cable, but for those who are more price sensitive there are affordable quarter inch cables available that will get the job done.

7. Audio Monitors – The sky is the limit with speakers, but fortunately many retails offer solutions at a wide range of price points (for example Rokit has a size and quality monitor option for just about every price).

6. Software – Many free music production software alternatives exist – Reason, Logic, etc, but in my experience and the experience of many professional colleagues, ProTools is still the definitive software for music production. Period.

5. Pre-Amp – This becomes extremely important for vocal recording. Often a microphone recording simply doesn’t have the output to compete with powered instruments (like an electric guitar). Amplification of the vocal within the recording path will enhance and warm any vocal performance.

4. Compressor – From bass guitars to vocals just about everything needs a little compressing from time to time to warm the sound and prevent variability in the volume level of the performance form damaging speakers (and ears).

3. Microphone – As with ProTools for software, there is only one brand that stands out in microphone technology. Sure microphone is known worldwide for their superior performance and sound quality. Every price point and benefit imaginable is addressed by at least Sure product. Start out with a $100 mic and work your way up according to your needs.

2. Devoted Friends – As with any hobby, your music will need a second (and third) opinion, over and over again. Each time you remaster tracks you’ll need another set of ears to keep you grounded. That means asking other to listen over and over again to new versions of the same song. Treat them to a beer every now and again to show your appreciation.

1. Time – As an ammeter, it WILL take you time to figure all this stuff out. Radio quality recording in one’s basement isn’t easy, it must be a labor of love you’re willing to make time for.

For Under $100.00 Create Your Own Streaming Audio Studio

Creating your own Streaming Audio audio studio has never been easier. There are so many great products around today that will allow you to produce high quality streaming audio for a fraction of the price it used to cost.

HARDWARE

The first thing you will need is a compatible computer. Today every new computer is already set up with everything you will need. A basic sound card with a mic and line in jack. If you do not have a sound card they are very cheap and you can get a good one from any standard computer shop.

Next you will need a good mic. These come in all sizes and shapes with different configurations however a general all round mic like the Logitech Noise-canceling microphone is fine for beginners. I suggest you get a desk top one to start with, as you may want to move into video later and so you wont want a headset in your videos.

Of course you could go up a stage and get a preamp with a professional mic but this will start running into dollars and the whole aim of this article is to help you get started.

Next you will want to get some cables to connect up your tape recorder and other audio equipment. Again the computer stores now have packs that will connect up pretty well any device into your computer to digitalize your sound. You want to record directly onto your computer however you can get those old tapes and Vinyl records into a digital format also.

SOFTWARE – RECORDING

Recording your audio is probably one of the most critical parts of this process and again you can get software that ranges from free to many thousands of dollars. For this exercise I suggest you download the free copy of Audacity. This is an excellent free software package that will allow you to record from your microphone or any equipment you have.

It provides excellent editing capabilities and also will allow you to edit multiple tracks and then combine them into one single track. For a quick overview of how to do this you can watch this video and also download the software

http://mp3soundstream.com/Audacity_Tutorial_-_Free_Audio_Editing_Software.html

SOFTWARE – CONVERTING

The next piece of software you will need for your studio is a converting program that will allow you to convert different formats. For example you may have a real audio file and you want to convert it to mp3. dBpoweramp is like the Swiss army knife for the audio industry and will convert just about any file to any other file format.

Convert from one format to another, just about every audio type is supported: mp3, mp4, Windows Media Audio (wma), Ogg Vorbis, AAC, Monkeys Audio, FLAC and many others whilst preserving ID Tags. It will also rip CDs for you.

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

SOFTWARE – REDUCTION

If you are going to stream an mp3 direct then you may want to recompile the file to a smaller format. RazorLame is a so-called "front-end" for use with LAME. LAME is a great MP3-Encoder, it’s very fast, it produces high-quality files, has many advanced features (like Variable Bitrates and Joint-Stereo), and it’s open source. Unfortunately, it is a command line utility, and that is where RazorLame comes in: It provides an easy-to-use graphical user-interface which makes MP3-encoding even easier!

The best way to use this software is to get one file and compile in a number of different formats to test the size against quality.

http://www.dors.de/razorlame/download.php

SOFTWARE – STREAMING

There are a few different ways of streaming your new audio files. If you have Macromedia products you can simple organize this your self however there are some great third party programs around that will do it all for you at a fraction of the cost.

MP3 SOUND STREAM

This is a simple piece of software that takes any mp3 or wav audio and converts the whole file into a swf file and then attaches a button so that viewers can listen on a web page without needing to download any extra software. This is because the flash plug-in is on 98% of computes and if not it will automatically detect and load the small plug-in. This is great for anyone not wanting to get into all the technical aspects of streaming audio.

You will not need to reduce your files at all with this program as it does it all for you. This is perfect for anyone wanting to stream one file at a time and wants to do it quickly and efficiently. It will stream even over most modem connections.

http://www.mp3soundstream.com

MSIJUKEBOX

For people wanting to stream a number of files then MSIJukebox is a great alternative. This software lets you choose any number of mp3 files and then organizes them using an XML file. By using the above free programs you can significantly reduce the size of these files to save on bandwidth.

Because MSIJukebox streams the actual mp3 you can also have a lot higher quality playback including stereo files. This is much better for those wanting to stream a number of very high quality mp3 files.

http://www.msijukebox.com

SUMMARY

So there you have it. A complete studio set up for under $100. Just download all the free software and purchase any of the streaming audio products that you want. You can then create, edit and manipulate any audio files you like. You will also be able to add these audios to your website.

With the web surfer becoming much more "web savvy" than they were a year ago, they are expecting not only information but also an entertaining web experience.

Seriusan sebaiknya jangan sampai komputer Cuma punya 4 port USB. Nanti ribet.

Jadi dengan kabel HDMI bisa keluar suara juga, so worry no more about the analog audio. Yang jelas sih klaim nya mobo2 baru yang udah pake HDMI udah support Full HD buat muter Blue Ray, meskipun saya agak ragu sih sebenernya.

11. BIOS.

edit file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1

options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

kemudian edit juga file /etc/group

temukan script audio:x:29:pulse
