A few nights ago I played a gig for which I was paid in beer, for the first time ever.

It’s a new thing for me; getting paid at all for what I do. About a month ago I made the princely sum of £16 for a half-hour set in a pub’s back room. My pay came solely by virtue of the number of people who came to see me, which is the first taste I’ve had of what it must be like to be a ‘real’ musician. Technically, the people in that back room paid me, just as you pay the artists you love every time you go to a gig, buy an album or download a track.

It was a good feeling, just as it was the other night where I played in a pub whose ’stage’ was basically the floor where some tables had been an hour earlier. It’s my first experience playing to so many people who weren’t there to see me, and proved simultaneously fun and intimidating. Highlights variously included:

1. A drunk idiot getting on the drumkit behind me and hitting them (arythmically), before being removed by the staff.

2. A different drunk attempting to shake my hand before he left, while I was still mid-song.

3. Yet another friendly drunk shouting out requests, one of which I actually knew. He joined in, singing better than me as I played “Caledonia”, a fitting close to my set. He bought me a pint and his friend gave me four quid for another.

Sure, its nice playing acoustic nights and folk gigs, but there’s a very different excitement to be found in playing to a busy pub full of folk who haven’t paid to hear you and quite probably don’t want to hear you; winning them over just by being yourself, without pandering to what you think they’ll want to hear (apart from “Caledonia”, thats a classic!) is a good, good feeling.

I like to think back on the words of my new, incredibly tall Polish friend from Hell is Harmony: “You are a very brave man, I couldn’t get up there and do that without my friends.” Being told you’re brave by a guy who looks a bit like a Viking is high praise indeed, but my friends are always there, in one way or another – if not in the building, then in the music, which I think is why I can keep doing it.

As you may know, Verizon sponsored the North American leg of Green Day’s tour that kicked off back in July of 2009. Verizon produced the numerous soundchecks that occurred during the tour (I believe the soundchecks were great events for fans but I am not quite sure what the band thought of them), as well as free t-shirts, food, games, cool photographs outside of the venues that were flashed onto the big boards above the stadiums pre-show, and concert footage at both the VCast Verizon GD site and Facebook.

The Green Day VCast site is now offering you the chance to re-mix a few songs from 21st Century Breakdown. The best remix wins some awesome gifts: both a guitar and a drum kit signed by Billie or Tre.

Go on over and remix your own and take a listen to the entry by Lauren Banjo. Lauren attended one of the soundchecks during the tour, and actually got Billie Joe to sing “Misery” from Warning during the soundcheck by providing him with the lyrics. It was epic.

Feedback Festival

When it comes to exciting music, Lakota and Whelans have just the thing to round off the year. Saturday 5 December marks the first Feedback Festival in which eight great acts will set the tone of what’s good now. Cap Pas Cap, Patrick Kelleher and Valerie Francis are amongst those joining the hip PR guys and trusty Wexford Street venue in celebrating the start of silly season at the cracking price of €10. It’s always a trip when the venue is full of new sounds and old friends and as the proceeds of the night go to the Peter McVerry Trust, the night’s guaranteed to go off with a real feeling of goodwill amongst We Are Men.

Furthermore i would like to thank you to everyone who have been visiting us and also appreciating the work we do by linking when taking something (especially in the case of translations). I have been experiencing a not so good thing, that some communities tend to take them and just copy paste without any mention of the source. I know i do now own copyrights for doing translations and either an Oscar or a Nobel Prize for doing so, but i would be grateful if as a sign of appreciation at least you would mention where from you have the translation. I considered the fact to not to do proper translations anymore, just summary…I’ve considered the fact to close down the site due to all time argues and bashings about this issue, but after all i won’t. The idea would be to SHARE with people who don’t know the Finnish language (or any other), so i will keep on posting translations until the point when i will have problems with such things again (with other communities, cause i know the one i have problem with won’t be solved).

Jumalauta se tunne ku koko päivän on oottanu ja oottanu ja joskus setin puolenvälin jälkeen tajuaa ettei jännitä enää. Mikä pakokauhu? Tajuaa että tekee virheitä, mutta ketään ei kiinnosta. Ei muakaan! Voi vapautua ja yrittää tasapainotella rikkinäisillä kengillä. Oli ihan sikana jengiä, mitä vittua?

Soundcheck oli aika legendaarinen. On Colors katto tasot kuntoo ja ku me tultiin fuzzeinemme tuuttaamaan oli miksaajan ilme niiiin epätoivonen. Pakko myöntää, että melkeen ittiäki hävetti polkee pedaalia ku oli nii härski soundi. Keikan jälkeen sama mies kuitenki tuli hehkuttamaan miten pitkästä aikaa ei tuntunu keikan seuraaminen työltä. Kivaa tämä tämmönen. Myös rankkaa ku keikkapalkkio on kymmenen juomalippua per naama, jotka pitää tuhota kolmessa tunnissa.. Kiitän ihmisiä jotka tuli kattoon <3 Kaverit on mukavia. Kohta pitää mennä roudaan kamoja pois, pois ja elämä jatkuu. Huomenna tentti, ei just kiinnostais. Tänää 0is Absoluuttinen O. nelivitosessa. Livemusiikki vie kyllä voiton kaikesta. Varsinkin lavan paremmalla puolella. Kumpi se sitten lienee? En osaa päättää millä puolella hymyilen mieluummin. Molemmilla.

Hiyiz,

Blog’s a day late today coz I though I’d wait and give a post mortem on the DJ set we did last night for Dublin’s Soundcheck night at Spy Bar.

I was assigned the task of being Fatty-Fatty-Fat-Fat Boy Slim for the night and so, having never manned a mixer before, a quick tutorial by our guitar player Chris meant I could look busy on The Wheels Of Steel (well, plastic, actually) whilst the boys downed some complimentary beverages.

Really enjoyed it I have to say. Myself and Niall had sorted a playlist covering our varying / converging musical tastes and so saved rooting around in a massive CD wallet as I made sure I qued up Dee Dee Ramone’s “one, two, three, four..” just right.

Due to the regular Soundcheck DJ being on holidays, the stand in before us had some interesting choices….

Let’s put it this way, as we chatted before the set, the sound of Phil Collins singing “Invisible Touch” more than motivated me to get up there and let the people “witness the strength of street knowledge” by spinning N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton”.

Only minor glitch was when I dropped “Bulls On Parade” a little earlier in the set than I’d planned by mistake; but the sight of Niall, Chris and Max (our roadie) going bananas for it allowed me to retrospectively claim that the sudden mood shift was an amazing piece of foresight on my part.

All in all, it was a gas.

But I don’t think Ministry Of Sound will come a’knocking anytime soon….

Oh my are we excited!! Today our debut album “God Bless Your Weary Soul, Amanda Richardson” comes out on Family Records/The Orchard, we start a 15 Day East Coast Tour starting at NYC’s Joe’s Pub, we play live on WNYC’s prestigious Soundcheck, and we have an amazing new video for our crazy Will Smith Cover Medley and the lovely folks over at AOL Spinner are featuring our album in their New Releases feature.

Family Records teamed up with the amazing Brooklyn-based collective Goddamn Cobras to turn our Will Smith Medley into an amazing video. It mashes 8 Will Smiths songs together. A warm day in Williamsburg, 6 different locations, 5 hours of shooting, and lots of happy passers-by. The Cobras are not only wonderful in that video making way, they’re also wonderful folks. We owe all this beauty to them!
