Εδώ έρχονται εκ νέου δουλεμένα και ηχογραφημένα τρία προηγούμενα κομμάτια των BSP: το Boy Vertiginous είναι το North Hanging Rock και το It Comes Back Again γίνεται True Adventures (αμφότερα από το “Open Season”), ενώ το No Man is an Archipelago υπάρχει στο “Do You Like Rock Music?” ως The Great Skua. Η μεταμφίεση των τριών κομματιών δείχνει αν μη τι άλλο πως το κουιντέτο από το Brighton εύκολα γυρνάει τους διακόπτες του στο συγκεκριμένο είδος. Ενδιαφέρουσα η ελεγειακή διασκευή του Wander With Me (1964) του Jeff Alexander που έγινε γνωστό από ένα επεισόδιο του Twilight Zone, το μόνο τραγούδι εδώ με φωνητικά.

Είναι ίσως η ίδια η φύση αυτού του post rock να αποτελεί το πλέον κατάλληλο ένδυμα τέτοιων εικόνων, όπως ίσχυσε και παλαιότερα για Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros κ.λπ.

Temporada: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Someone’s been saying some very nice things about The Monarch’s very own Soundtracks night…

Have a read below or have a look at Remote Goat.

For some time, the Bloody Awful Poetry boys have been bringing some of the coolest new music to Camden regulars, educating them in some of the bloodiest and awful-est poetry you’ve ever heard, but crucially in bestowing the most wonderful music upon many privileged ears. Having championed bands such as The Rapscallions and artists as phenomenal as King Charles, these guys know good music. So Soundtracks, at the Monarch every first and third Saturday of the month is not where you may expect to find them…

This gloriously exuberant night of the best (and cheesiest) music from the movies is unhindered by any cynical irony – it is an absolute montage of guilty pleasure, gooey nostalgia, and defiantly riotous fun. There is no room for being too cool for school at this night – there are giggles and squeals all the way! It’s so rare these days to find yourself at a London club-night where people don’t care about trends, fashion or what people they don’t even know are thinking, but thankfully Soundtracks has a zero tolerance policy on that, and if you’re not shadow-boxing to “Eye of the Tiger”, “Cha-cha-ing” to “Hungry Eyes” or head-banging to “Bohemian Rhapsody”, you’ll soon feel like the nerd in the crowd.

Spectacularly led by Sagar Shah and Keir Mills on the decks – who somehow manages to keep pace with Kevin Bacon’s Footloose-ing for hours on end (seriously – people were taking pictures!) the tracks cover every genre of movie, and every style of music. There’s a heavy dose of 80s, just to ensure the crowd’s inner child is dragged back out in public, on stage and jumping around, as well as tracks from movies as recent as Transformers. As for the crowd, this place attracts the delightfully friendly mixture that you’d expect from Camden – the young funky stylish lot, the silly drunken crowd, the smattering of curious tourists, the occasional oddball, and a bunch of other indefinables – all of whom sure know how to have fun, fun, fun!!

Once upon a time, long before the Playboy influenced outfits, the Palais and the compilation CDs, when School Disco was still held in an old school hall in Vauxhall, and entrance was by secret guest list only, that was the place for the most fun night out you could wish for. Today, that place is Soundtracks, except this time it’s epic, it’s genuine, and it’s downright Oscar-winning!

The next Soundtracks is at The Monarch on Saturday 5th December and tickets are available to buy now from here.

The main promo single from the soundtrack is by one of my favorite American bands, Death Cab For Cutie. The track is called Meet Me On The Equinox and it is typical DCFC song. Check it out below.

James Cameron won’t be happy. Right now, his $500m blockbusting will-reinvent-cinema-as-we-kn0

James Cameron won’t be happy. Right now, his $500m blockbusting will-reinvent-cinema-as-we-kn0w-it 3D epic AVATAR is not even breaking Google’s top ten trends, being squarely beaten by the Gulf of Sidra, the “Global Warming hoax” and the Oregon lottery, whereas on social networking zeitgeist Twitter, New Moon, classic movie quotes and Lady Gaga trend like crazy, with nary a Na’vi to be seen.

Nevertheless, it’s out soon and promises to change our lives forever. Forever. I’m more interested in the music really, and what it’ll be like hearing James “Danger Motif” Horner returning to a big SF action movie. The official score site has one track playing, and it’s ok, but online CD retailer Exlibris has put clips of the soundtrack up. It sounds interesting, maybe a bit kind of foppish for my liking, but it’s not like I was never going to buy the CD anyway, so it’s just a little taster.

The Leona Lewis song, “I See You”, though. Jesus fucking christ, I never thought I’d be praying for Celine to come back.

There is so much going on right now, in this crazy season of decisions, transitions, trust and faith

There is so much going on right now, in this crazy season of decisions, transitions, trust and faith. Hard times have caused my plastic mask to lose its luster and crack and its been interesting to see the relationships that have remained constant, that have fallen to the wayside and that have grown in response. The Me that glitters and sparkles to keep out the probes that might find the insecurity is being replaced by a broken and more honest Me. Where the newly exposed skin peeks out, it is raw and sensitive to the sun… I find myself hiding from the daylight hours and nursing the tender surface… still not ready to thicken it with exposure, to let commitment and conflict callus over parts that need to do work. In the process of this growth and hiding, I’ve found myself really turning to my music. Here are the tracks that have been carrying me on their notes and caressing me with their lyrics.

•“All We Are” Matt Nathanson “I kept falling over/I kept looking backward/I went broke believing/That the simple should be hard” •	“Turn to Stone” Ingrid Michaelson “Let’s go to sleep with clearer heads/And hearts to big to fit our beds/And maybe we won’t feel so alone/Before we turn to stone”

 •	“Gravity” Sara Bareillis “Set me free, let me be/I don’t want to fall another moment on to your gravity/Here I am, and I stand so tall/I’m just the way I’m supposed to be.”

•	“Quequ’un M’a Dit” Carla Bruni

•	“Crash and Burn” Savage Garden “When you feel all alone/ a loyal friend is hard to find/ you’re caught on a one way street/with monsters in your head/ when hopes and dreams are far away/You feel like you can’t face the day” •	“Rain” “its hard to know when to give up the fight/Some things you want will just never be right/ its never rained like it has tonight before”

•	“Twenty four” Switchfoot “All of my symphonies/With twenty-four parts /Life is not what I thought it was /Twenty-four hours ago/Still I’m singing ‘Spirit, take me up in arms with You/ I’m not copping out /Not copping out “

•	“You’re Not Alone” Meredith Andrews “With heartache your closest friend/and Everyone else long gone/you had to face the music on your own/But there is a sweeter song that calls you home singing/you’re not alone, for I am here/let me wipe away your every tear.”

While some writers need absolute silence to write, I need music to get the creative juices fo

While some writers need absolute silence to write, I need music to get the creative juices following. Here’s my top 10 albums for writing:

10. Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D

I love this piece of music. It is the musical equivalent of the Roman virtue of gravitas – dignified and solemn. How I wish I could achieve the same goosebumpyness in my writing! Bonus fact: “Beethoven didn’t finish the music until the last minute.” (gee, I wonder what that feels like…)

9. Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony

Schubert’s music is great for writing: triumphant in some moments, spooky in others. Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony even sounds like a film soundtrack. And the fact that it is an unfinished masterpiece is comforting for people like me whose hard drive is cluttered with false starts.

8. Bach’s Goldberg Variations

Wistful and lovely. Very soothing. The BBC describes the variations as taking one from the “sublime to delightfully silly.” I am a fan of the piano version, which you may recognize as the music that Hannibal Lecter air conducts in Silence of the Lambs.

7. Phillip Glass: Notes on a Scandal (Soundtrack)

I love Philip Glass’s soundtracks, and this is one of the best. Lots of intense oboes and clarinets that reflect the psychological complexity of the film. It helps me get into the heads of characters and reminds me how good intentions can go awry.

6. Vivaldi’s Violin Concertos

These short pieces for violin are a wonderful alternative for those suffering Four-Seasons-fatigue. Like a good sentence, the orchestration is crisp and precise. I often feel inspired to take different directions while listening to the taunting violins.

5. Beethoven’s Symphony No 5
This is the dur-dur-dur-dur one. Someone once said, and it might have been Niki Gemmell, that you should write as if you were dying. The dur-dur-dur-dur is Fate, knocking on Beethoven’s door, waking him from sleep. Motivating stuff if one has a deadline.

4. Mozart’s Requiem

From the pounding Rex Tremendae to sweeping sadness of Lacrymosa, Mozart’s Requiem takes me outside of myself for a while, which is ideal for the creative process.

3. James Horner: Titanic Soundtrack.

Go on. Have your snicker. Titanic is very goofy and a little familiar but I find it invaluable for creating suspense and drama. In the early stages of a manuscript, it is a time for fun and being uncritical, although you have my permission to skip the Celine Dion track.

Like Notes on a Scandal, the sharp, repetitive themes of The Hours help me enter the interior life of the characters, even characters I thought as being minor or unlikeable. Both movies were based on books, which might explain the complex moods of the music.

And the best music for writing ever is….

1. James Horner: A Beautiful Mind Soundtrack

Whoa. I love this soundtrack – and I’ve never even seen the film! Never heard anything quite as haunting, and it always gets me in the mood for writing marathons. Don’t think there is much more I can say about how much I love it!

Warning:

NEVER listen to music while re-reading and editing. In movies, even theworst dialogue feels poignant if accompanied by beautiful music. To spot bloopers, cliches, and typos, the text must be read in unforgiving silence. (I learned this the hard way when a mediocre short story felt more wonderful than it really was.)

What do you write to? Nothing? What’s your favorite? What have I missed?

Here’s a jazzy dose of proto-Goblin, courtesy of the band Seconda Generazione. The virtuoso trio featured two future founders of Goblin, namely keyboard player Claudio Simonetti and drummer Walter Martino. Bassist Stefano Cerri, who passed away in 2000, was apparently an experienced session musician. (He also bore a certain resemblance to former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman!) As you can hear for yourself, some Goblin hallmarks, like complex time signatures and a tight sound, are present and correct. But the vibe is undoubtedly much lighter and a bit more “muso wank.” This clip also features what I would consider a rarity: a drummer who actually uses his gong!

Unfortunately, since I don’t speak Italian, I’m unable to glean much information about Seconda Generazione from the Internet. Cursory detective work leads me to conclude that the fleeting outfit lasted from late 1971 until the following year. In 1972, Simonetti and Martino begat new band Oliver with guitarist Massimo Morante and bassist Fabio Pignatelli—that’s the classic Goblin lineup, btw. Oliver would mutate into Cherry Five, and then, in 1974 or early 1975, the band became Goblin. By that point, band members had come and gone, only for the original Cherry Five lineup to reconvene. While Goblin lasted until 1978, they recorded music for Perché Si Uccidono – La Merde in 1976 as Il Reale Impero Britannico. I haven’t seen the movie, but the soundtrack is very good.

Oh, and before Seconda Generazione, Simonetti and Martino were members of Il Ritratto di Dorian Gray—an indication of the gothic direction to come?

Writing music for video games seem to be second nature for you. How did you get into this field?

I got into the videogame field by being offered two projects simultaneously – the music supervisor for Sony Computer Entertainment America brought me in to write music for God of War, and at the same time I was hired to score the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory game, which was a tie-in to the movie directed by Tim Burton. Before those two games, my background had been mostly in music composition for a music/drama series on National Public Radio and XM Satellite Radio, called Radio Tales. The Radio Tales series presented classics of science fiction, fantasy and horror each week; I wrote a wall-to-wall musical score for every half-hour program, and there were over one hundred programs in the series. I worked on the series with my long-time music producer Winnie Waldron, who now works with me producing my music for the videogame industry. After God of War and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I was offered another big project – The Da Vinci Code videogame tie-in to the Ron Howard/Tom Hanks film – and my schedule of videogame scoring work hasn’t let up since. I’ve been privileged to create music for a lot of exciting projects, and that definitely fuels my enthusiasm for my work.

What inspires your music compositions?

It helps when the source material is inspiring. For instance, working on the Shrek the Third videogame was a lot of fun, mostly because of all the creative stimulation that comes from working with characters like Shrek and all his fairy-tale pals. In the same vein, I had a great time creating music for the Speed Racer videogame tie-in to the Wachowski brothers film, because of that terrific ‘James Bond’ flavor that was written into the original manga. I’ve also worked on projects that were based on ideas created by the game developers themselves, like SimAnimals and Spore Hero. For those sorts of projects, my music producer Winnie Waldron and I rely on the developers to involve us in their creative process and show us as much as possible, from concept art and design documents to finished gameplay. That way, as a composer I can be inspired not only by the game that the developers are creating, but also by the enthusiasm they have for their work, and as a producer Winnie can guide the creation of the music in a way that best serves the developer’s vision for their game.

How do you feel when you see the finished product–your music with the animation of the video games?

I’m always very excited to play the completed game. In many cases, the finished product takes a different direction than the one I’d been shown during development, and I’m always surprised and intrigued by how my music complements these sorts of changes. I also enjoy watching other people playing a game I’ve worked on. It’s great watching someone who is really enjoying a game that I scored.

What has been your most difficult project to date?

I can’t really think of any project that I could call ‘most difficult’. No project is ever easy. Some projects posed unique challenges, though. Both God of War and The Da Vinci Code called for choral writing in archaic languages, so I worked with ancient Greek for God of War and Latin for The Da Vinci Code. For the Speed Racer project I wrote some aggressive Electronica with strong funk influences, and that was something I hadn’t had the opportunity to do in my previous projects. Working in new creative territory is always a little daunting, but I tend to welcome the chances to learn something new. For instance, a recent project for Xbox Live Arcade, The Maw, called for my music producer Winnie Waldron and myself to step in and design the music interactivity for the score I had composed. We closely guided the interactive design and music implementation, which was an invaluable experience.

What advice would you give anyone looking to get into the gaming industry?

I’ve been asked this question quite a few times: it’s a difficult one to answer. I can’t offer advice for other subfields within the interactive entertainment field, but I can speak in a very limited way regarding my own. All composers have their own unique gifts, and those divergent talents will take them down radically different career paths. Advice I might give someone with a symphonic mind-set would be completely inappropriate for a DJ-style9 composer, and vice versa. All I can say at this point is that the technical and artistic standards are very high. Without the necessary skills or the highest-quality equipment, a composer is going to have a very hard time breaking in. Unlike other performers or creators, a modern-day composer has to be considered a full-scale company, offering not only a pool of talents and a set of skills, but a dedicated production facility and the technical wherewithal to exploit that technology to its fullest.
