2008 saw the release of Left 4 Dead, the hectic team based survival horror from Valve, the development team behind the Half-Life series. It had a way to make you rely on your team members for survival like no other game could. A year later the sequel is here, a quick turn around for any sequel in the gaming world, more-so surprising from a developer that is renowned for their lengthy development schedules.

While many fans cried out in a boycott, stating this was more of an expansion back than a full blown sequel, after a few hours with Left 4 Dead 2 it instantly proves itself worthy as a new addition to the franchise as opposed to a glorified expansion pack. Fixing and tweaking many of the first titles downfalls and adding in new components creates a title that is bursting at the seams with rich, zombie slaying gameplay.

For those of you who haven’t had an experience with the first game, Left 4 Dead 2 places you in the middle of a Zombie apocalypse. You fill the role of one of the four survivors who try to blast your way through hordes of “infected” in an attempt to get to the end of the map. This time round the game is set in the southeast regions of America, and the new cast of characters carry humor, charm and wit in spades. Hearing stories about particular Nascar drivers, and stories about hilarious accidents while hundreds of zombies are honing in on your position gives the characters more of the spotlight that the first title was lacking.

The improvements are so rich in-fact you will find going back to the original game is a pure disappointment. L4D2 features five new interesting campaigns, that have you fighting your way through far more invigorating environments than it’s predecessor. The situations you find yourself in simply give you more to do, which keeps things feeling fresh as opposed to run and gun to the safe house feeling the first game tended to have. All five campaigns can also be played in the Versus game mode right off the bat, no waiting around for Valve to release DLC to unlock that ability this time. As a result the game feels like a full package, where the first game tended to feel a little hollow.

L4D2 is team based gameplay at it’s finest. It is paramount to communicate and work together as a team to achieve success, more-so than any other game you’re likely to play this generation. You will need to rely on your team mates to keep you informed of where they are, when finding health, ammo or weapons, or when there is a world of hurt about to come raining down, and you will have to return the favour. The catch is that no level will play the same thanks to Valve’s AI which they call “The Director”. The Director changes up the location of enemies, weapons and difficulty each and every time you play. It manages to encourage repeat play as you will never know exactly how it will pan out, and manages to provide a challenge every time, regardless of your experience and skill.

Difficulty will play a big part in your experience with L4D2 which offers some of the most challenging gameplay you’re likely to see. Normal is a good entry point as you grasp the concept and learn what weapons work in what situations, while Expert requires the very best in reaction time, communication and overall skills. To make it even harder L4D2 introduces realism mode, removing hints and glows on items such as health and weapons from the HUD. This means your communication with your team member needs to be top notch, otherwise you are going to find yourself high and dry and left for dead.

If you are anti-social or just don’t feel like playing online there are Bots included who can go through the five campaigns with you. They also jump in on the action if a player drops out, and while they do make accurate shots and do their best to help out, it’s far more entertaining with with human players. The bots are largely unreliable. There were a few situations where I went down and needed to be revived, the bots came and took out the zombies and then ran away again without helping me up, leaving me there to die. It’s functional, but to play L4D2 as intended you really do need to play with fellow gamers.

If the campaigns aren’t challenging enough for you Versus mode is sure to get the blood pumping. Versus pits four players as “survivors” and another four players control special infected enemies such as Tanks, Boomers etc. With the addition of new Special Infected in Spitters, Jockeys and Chargers, the Versus gameplay is now far more interesting and fleshed out. Spitters have the ability to spit out acid, Jockeys ride the survivors controlling their movements and Chargers are like mini tanks, charging at their enemies and pummeling them. It keeps gameplay varied and with the 4v4 action things can become quite tense and unpredictable.

What makes L4D2 so successful is the tension and overall stress it will cause you. It get’s your heart racing, and you will find your attention fixated on the screen at all times, constantly reassessing the situation and making decisions you hope will pay off. Each campaign features pivotal moments that will stand out in your mind well and truly after you complete them, whether it be frantically filling a car full of gas in Dead Centre, or dealing with the storms and winds in Hard Rain. If you are a fan of the first game, you are going to go ga-ga for L4D2.

It’s not just the new characters, the fantastic and varied environments or gameplay situations that make L4D2 a far better package, it’s the little things that make the game so much more entertaining and varied. A bigger range of guns, the inclusion of explosive and incendiary ammo pickups but most importantly, and the most fun, the inclusion of melee weapons.

That’s right ladies and gents, you can now slice and dice, whack and smack and shred your way through each campaign with a delightful assortment of melee weapons. There are the conventional melee weapons for a horror film setting, there’s the machete and the katana and of course a chainsaw, but then there are some unexpected ones such as a cricket bat (paddle bat for the Yanks) electric guitar or a frying pan. In all there are a number to choose from and you will have a blast regardless of your choice. There is nothing quite like the feeling of facing off a bunch of infected and smashing their heads off with a well timed swing from the old cricket bat, you can’t help but have a smile come across you face, disturbing as that thought may be.

Along with new weapons come new perks as well. Along with your pain-pills and your medipacks you know have access to adrenalin shots which give you that little pick me up when the odds are against you, making you faster and stronger for a short period of time. Add this with the new defibrillator pack to bring slain survivors back from the dead, and you have some great new additions to the gameplay.

Now it’s time to address the heavy censorship applied to the Australian release of the game. Due to the fact that in Australia we don’t have an R18+ rating for video-games, the original cut that rest of the world received was refused classification by the OFLC board. While violence doesn’t make a game, in a game like L4D2 it certainly adds to the authenticity of the situation. The lack of blood, bodies on the floor or dismemberment makes the game really seem lacking. I’d highly advise you to get an uncut version of the game, if you want more info on how to do that, check out my article on this website.

THE FINAL VERDICT:

Despite the quick turn around between releases Left 4 Dead 2 is a far more complete, rich and rewarding gameplay experience, improving in almost every aspect it ventures. This is team based gameplay at it’s finest, and the amount of tension and stress this game can cause you is a true testament to Valve. They have created one thrilling and immersive game here. For those who enjoyed the first game then you will fall in love with the sequel, yet if the first Left 4 Dead didn’t rev your engine, chances are this game will do nothing to change that. Overall, one of the most thrilling games this year.

GAMEPLAY: 9.1/10 – Gameplay has been improved in each and every facet over the original.

GRAPHICS: 8.8/10 – The graphics are fairly decent but it isn’t the greatest looking game on the market. Enemies are detailed and animations are fluent. The daylight environments add a little something that the first game was lacking.

AUDIO: 9.0/10 – The weapons sound full and punchy, the voice acting is top notch, campy but it suits, and differentiating groans from different zombies comes together is a great sound package.

VALUE: 9.2/10 – The AI Director makes each campaign play different each time. Add this to the versus mode and the new scavenger mode and you have a pretty decent bang for buck. Hopes for further campaigns via DLC.

OVERALL: 9.2/10

I have just arrived home from the most amazing weekend workshop with Dr. Leonid Sharashkin. I think I now know what the phrase “I’m buzzing” actually means! What an inspirational (and funny) Man.

Dr. Leo is the editor of the English version of the Ringing Cedars of Russia book series. If you haven’t read them yet, I would highly recommend them.

The workshop covered everything from permiculture to unassisted home birthing to our universal ancestral roots. He included a great presentation of many images featuring his family – beautiful wife and 3 kids, his parents, the log cabin built with his own bare hands, the eco-village where he lives when he is in Russia, other eco-villages around the world.

I loved how he combined the vision of a space of love/kin’s domain with the practicalities of how it all could work (or not – he had some very funny stories about what not to do). I also very much liked how Dr. Leo emphasised individual responsibility – that it is up to each individual to decide what his or her space of love is/could be. In other words; not to take what Anastasia speaks about as a religion – TAKE BACK YOUR POWER AND MAKE YOUR OWN MIND UP.

Some main points:

Our pristine origins and how/why they were wiped out

Linguistics/origins of words in English, Russian and other languages and how some once positive words and images have been turned upside-down

Looking to nature and within ourselves for all answers

Steps to creating your space of love (step 0 – visualisation)

There is a difference between running from the city and being drawn to nature

In big cities you interact with people’s functions not human beings

Benefits of “pests” and weeds

Why the bees are dying out

The meaning of the word “will”

Some ideas on how an ecovillage can be successful

Religion/dogmas compared to Operating Systems (v. funny)

Dr. Leo suggested these 2 eco-villiage sites to check out:

http://www.grishino.ecology.net.ru/en/index.htm

http://eco-kovcheg.ru/index_en.html

Another cool site:

http://www.thatroundhouse.info/

Here you can see an interview with Dr. Leo (I haven’t watched this yet)

http://www.consciousmedianetwork.com/members/lsharashkin.htm

Here you can read his doctoral dissertation on Family Gardens: Russia’s Primary Agriculture

Enjoy!

For more half-baked ideas, see my ideas tag.

I’ll mention first that this isn’t my idea, and it’s not new or original. OLPC already implemented a View Source button.

Why can’t we have the same for Fedora? This is how it would work …

The View Source button would hover in your task bar. When pressed it opens up this dialog:

Like xkill and xwininfo, pressing the “point at a window” button changes your mouse so you click on the program you want to view the source of. X sort of makes it possible to find out (with a bit of effort) which binary is behind each program (see for example the xprop command).

You do an
rpm -qf
on this binary (or use a yum search) to locate the source.

Use
yumdownloader --source
to download the source. Unpack it into a standard rpmbuild location, and open up the user’s preferred editor.

With experience, and many custom rules and heuristics, you can extend this idea. For example, if they pointed at a dialog box, search the source for strings from the dialog box to try to locate the exact lines of code.

Or have some debuginfo-like metadata packages which are generated when packages are built, to allow very precise file/line locations to be determined.

Combine the whole thing with LXR so we can browse source intuitively.

This is a great way to encourage contributions to Fedora and Free software in general, because I think it would really make code much more accessible to casual programmers, tinkerers and children. Even experienced programmers would find it useful when tracking down bugs in random applications.

We all enjoy our shopping experiences at Walmart, mostly because it is a one stop deal for the major

We all enjoy our shopping experiences at Walmart, mostly because it is a one stop deal for the majority of people. But depending on our mood at that time or maybe how we woke up that day, there is no telling what may go on at a Walmart store.

Heather Ellis only a college student in 2007 was accused of resisting arrest, assaulting police officers, and disturbing the peace for allegedly pushing other consumer items aside while cutting in line, as well as kicking police escorts.

This past Wednesday, Ellis had her felony trial.

Police Officers, Employees, and customers seem to have the same story, but Ellis is left alone as she and her cousin perceived something different that winter night.

Ellis and her cousin went to Walmart to pick up a few items for her mother, so instead of making a quick shop a long wait, Ellis and her 15 year old cousin decide to split lines. Seeing that her cousin’s line was moving faster, Ellis grabbed her stuff and cut the line with her cousin in it.

Reading the CNN article, I began to feel confused and notice some obvious gray area. There is video footage of the line and someone swiping their hand across and moving the previous items off to the side and replacing them with their own. As well as footage of the police escorting Ellis outside and confrontation in the parking lot.

Interesting, but reading further, Ellis starts yelling loudy and so here is where the motives of racism comes into to play.

The customers in back of Ellis’ cousin, must have been white because according to the article there are only 13% of the population that are African American and Hispanic. So the majority of people are white based on this statistic.

So, is this case a racial issue or is it an issue of manners and respect.

It could very well be both. There is still some racial stereotyping going on everywhere, sad really, that people must judge because of color, but it is slowly fading away. It takes time for things to heal, but as for Heather Ellis, she is continuing her fight for justice.

So who is right or wrong?

Both are.

I was not there, so I can’t make claims, but based on what I see, if stories are true, then Ellis is wrong for being loud and profane and the police officers are wrong for making the situation worse. How? Well for using force and having at least five officers to try and fix the issue. No wonder tension was high, 5 to 1 ratio.

If you want more details about this story click below:

According to Google the code cannot be consider beta or production, but that the current version of code will allow developers to understand, design and develop for Chrome OS as it is today.

Some lakes are formed by rivers or streams flowing into a lower land area. Bays are formed when the ocean washes into a cove. Some creeks are formed by water springing up from an underground source. Puddles are formed by rain falling down. The point is, bodies of water have sources.

As the angel in Ezekiel 47 brought the prophet to the place where the waters of God’s grace were deep enough to swim in, he paused.

Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.

Ezekiel 47:5

At that point, the angel turned Ezekiel around, and they returned to the brink of the river.

And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river.

Ezekiel 47:6

The river of God’s grace which flows steadily into the lives of Christians is a wonderful thing. It brings such blessings, in fact, that there is a temptation to bask in these blessings, and to forget the Source of the river. In other words, we sometimes enjoy the blessings and ignore the “Blessor.” When you find yourself saturated in the grace of God, and you are splashing, soaking, and swimming in His blessings, do not forget to seek the Source of the river of life. The sweetest, coolest, and best waters are found in the presence of the Source Himself.

THIS WAS A REALLY HEAVY SEMESTER… but finally is over! (at least the hard part of school), I can finally sleep today but more importantly: I can go back to music (I’m happy because of that ).

I have a lot of news today for you guys:

1 – While I wasn’t here writing in this blogspot, I had 2 important concerts (because my choir class): the official choir concert (31th october) and pramúsica show (6th November). It was awesome, the first one was my first formal vocal concert in my entire life; the second one… I was really nervous because it was my first concert where I played drums, percussions, acoustic guitar, electric bass and SING hahaha. I’m trying to get the audio, but it’s still in process… when I get them, I’ll upload them .

2- Because this tough semester (and many other personal problems), I started to develope the third CD “Heaven”. I know I haven’t uploaded “Tsunami – Hate” songs but as you know I tend to write new songs when something important is happening in my life. I hope this vacations I can finish the vocal part of “Tsunami – Hate” and the structure of “Heaven”. By the way, “Heaven” is the third album but I’m doing at the same time songs for “Source” (4th) and “Time” (5th)… every album has its theme, that’s the reason…

3- This is awesome, 3 days ago… 3 friends told me (at 3 pm hahahaha) that SGAE was giving 7 full scholarships to spanish tongued countries. Well, as you know I’m studing Biotechnology because I got a 90% scholarship (and a 1000 pesos per month help used for food or rent)… that is only because of my good grades but let’s be honest: I don’t love it as much as music. I don’t care if I’m good at most of the classes that I take on school, I’m not happy…

I’ll fight for that scholarship (as far as my abilities allow me to)… I need to send my information before 24th November, I must hurry, this could be the opportunity I’ve been waiting all my life!

4- By the way, talking about Berklee’s requirements, there something that many people have been asking me: “Why don’t you have a myspace account?” I think it’s time for me to answer that question (and I hope Berklee and SGAE read this answer):

I don’t want to be considered as someone else, like another musician that is trying to make music to get fame, money, wealth, to sell, sell and sell!!!… I know in these days money is important, but it’s NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT. I see myself as an alternative musician, because I try to make songs that make you think about your life… make you remember good (and bad) things and BECAUSE OF THAT… you’ll try to change. That’s why I take a lot of time to make one song, I want it to be as close as possible to the feeling and thought I want to share… I don’t have a myspace account because I’m loyal to my alternative principles: “if you want to be someone successful, don’t follow what everybody does… or you’ll be like the rest”.

Note for SGAE and Berklee, my works must be downloaded and they’re in midi format because I have no money to record them (but I’d love to) and I don’t have a band to play it alive (it’s a personal work) and more important: I could use a camera, record myself playing each part and then use Sonar 6 to mix them but… somebody stole my camera ¬¬. Please, understand my position, I really don’t have money… this scholarship can be the best thing that could happen to me because I would study what I want AND I won’t have to worry about food anymore…

Here you can download the full album I call “Tsunami – Love”, you can read the lyrics on the right side of this blogspot:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=L1PLO8KE

Here you can download some incomplete Midi Demos of “Tsunami – Hate” and “Heaven”:

How do you maximize your site? By earning some few dollars per click from displaying Adsense ads on

How do you maximize your site?
By earning some few dollars per click from displaying Adsense ads on it. Many are now realizing that good money is made from this source of revenue. Try the simple mathematical computation of multiplying those clicks for every page on your website and you get a summation of earnings equivalent to a monthly residual income with that little effort you have made.

Google Adsense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant and text-based Google ads on their website’s content pages and earn money in the process. The ads displayed are related to what your users are looking for on your site. This is the main reason why you both can monetize and enhance your content pages using Adsense.

How much you will be earning will depend on how much the advertisers are willing to pay. It will depend also on the keywords required. If the keywords the advertiser have chosen are in high demand, you could receive more dollars per click. On the other hand, low demand keywords will earn you just a few cents per click.

How can you start making profits out of your website using Adsense?

1. Sign up for an Adsense account. It will only take a few minutes of your time.

2. When the site is accepted, you will be receiving a clip code to include in your web pages. You can insert this code on as many pages or web sites that you want. The AdWords will start appearing immediately after.

3. You will be earning a few cents or some dollars per click when someone starts clicking on the AdWords displayed on any of your web pages. Trying to earn false revenues by repetitively clicking on your own ads is a no-no. This will result in a penalty or the possibility of your site being eliminated. The money you have already earned may be lost because of this.

4. View your statistics. Adsense earnings can be checked anytime by logging into your web site account.

Once you got your account working, you may still want to pattern them to the many sites that are earning more money than you are. It is important to note that there are factors affecting how your website will perform and the amount of money it will give you.

It is a common practice that when a site earning money, the tendency is for the owner to want to make more out of what they are getting already. It usually takes some time combined with trial and error to attain what you want for your Adsense contents.

Time and some important factors that you can practice and use.

How do you increase your Adsense earnings?

1. Choose one topic per page. It is best to write a content for your page with just a few targeted phrases. The search engine will then serve ads that are more relevant which will then result in higher clickthoughs.

2. Using white space around your ad. This can make your ad stand out from the rest of your page so visitors can spot them easily. There are also other choices of colors you can use, provided by search engines, which can harmonize the color of your ad with the web page color.

3. Test your ad placement. It is recommended to use the vertical format that runs down the side of the web page to get more positive results. You can also try both horizontal and vertical formats for a certain period of time to see which one will give you better results.
4. More content-based pages. Widen the theme of your website by creating pages that focus more on your keyword phrases. This will optimize the pages for the search engines. It can not only attract traffic but also make them more relevant for the AdWords to be displayed.
5. Site Build It. This is the perfect tool to be used for creating lots of Adsense revenues. Site Build It has all the tools necessary to quickly achieve a keyword-rich site that can rank high in the search engines. This will also produce a flow of traffic to your site of highly targeted visitors.

MHT Web Archives are complete web pages saved into one file, and is a format browsers like Internet Explorer and Opera can handle. If you like saving complete pages as MHT archives, and need to be able to open all those you saved in Windows, you will need to install Opera, or you can use unMHT plugin for Firefox to give it that functionality.

But if you find that double-clicking an .mht file opens the text editor (which would probably be the case), you’ll need to right-click it and choose to Open With > your web browser, since no mimetype exists for that file extension.

However, to make .mht a registered file-type, you can use a little program called assoGiate. You should be able to install it via Synaptic (if not, you may need more software sources), or you can go to the download page (note that the link for Ubuntu packages currently seems to be dead, but you can get the source code there, if you prefer compiling anyway; otherwise, you can get the i386/32-bit version and amd64/64-bit version here). Once installed, it will end up in Applications > System Tools > File Types Editor.

In assoGiate, use the New button to create a blank mimetype. You’ll see there are 5 tabs in the dialogue box that pops up, and you will be putting information in the first 4. Some just require you to type data in an empty field, while others will require you to click an +Add button to do so. You can copy and paste the required data (in red) from here as you go, to save you typing it.

► General:
Category: Messages
Name: web-archive
Description: MHT Web Archive

Use the Browse button [...] to select an icon of your choice for the .mht file-type.

► Related Types:
Parent types: message/rfc822

► Filenames:
Filename pattern: *.mht

► File contents:

When you click +Add, which you’ll be doing 4 times, you’ll see more than one data entry field, but all you need to worry about is the Value: one.

Value: From: <Saved by
Value: Content-Type: multipart/related;
Value: boundary=”—-=_NextPart_
Value: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD

Once your new mimetype has been created, go to the Database menu in assoGiate’s main window and choose to Export Types… so you can import it again if need be.

Now, I mentioned you can right-click an .mht file and Open With > either Opera or Firefox (if it has the unMHT plugin), but to make either the default program for double-clicking, right-click one, select Properties and go to the Open With tab. There you’ll see some programs you can choose from, with Opera likely to be there. For Firefox, click the +Add button and select ‘Firefox Web Browser‘ from the list of programs that appears. Click Add and close the dialogue box.

Since support for this type is already in Opera, all you’ll see in the address bar is the local url to the file just opened. In Firefox, unMHT handles the opening of the file, so the address will look like:

unmht:///file.5/home/yourusername/Documents/Ubuntu-MHT-Guide.mht/

If you’re wondering whether you could just make your browser open .mht files via the last method, without creating a mimetype, the answer is that you can, but creating a mimetype is much neater. Your .mht files will be listed as “MHT Web Archive“, and have a unique icon; if you had Opera or Firefox opening these files without the mimetype, and you changed the icon for .mht files, you would change the icon for all file-types opened with the specified browser. And as you would have noted, creating the mimetype is actually not that much of a hassle, especially if all the technical data has been supplied.

Check out more examples of creating mimetypes, as well as info on changing file properties and default apps for extensions if need be.

You can’t avoid germs and viruses entirely! Wherever people congregate, whether it’s on airplanes, conference rooms or on a train, viruses and germs will spread!

Latest Facts

FACT: Most people who catch the H1N1 virus have recovered without needing medical treatment

This means that catching this flu is not quite as serious as once feared, unless you already have an underlying medical condition such as:

Asthma

Diabetes

Weakened immune system

Heart disease

Kidney disease

Pregnant

FACT: The flu virus can live on surfaces for up to eight hours.

It’s likely that you’ll come in contact with H1N1 or other viruses that exist on money, door handles, keyboards and when shaking hands.

This means you need to:

Wash your hands often

Use hand sanitizer (alcohol-based)

Keep your fingers away from your eyes, nose and mouth

FACT: People can spread H1N1 for 24 hours before the onset of symptoms and for a number of days after symptoms appear.

This means you:

Stay away from others if you have the flu

Do not return to the workplace until you are completely fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of any fever-reducing medication.

Things You Can Do

1) Take care of yourself

Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, get enough sleep, exercise and take an effective nutritional supplement.

A good multi-vitamin, mineral and herbal supplement is the foundation of health and nutrition. If you are looking for a high quality liquid multi-vitamin, mineral and herbal supplement, we suggest that you take a look at dailysource™.

2) If you do experience flu-like symptoms, stay home.

Don’t try and be a hero by showing up to work. If you have sick days available that’s exactly what they are intended for!

3) Get vaccinated

This could be your best protection against the flu. The H1N1 vaccine is being released in ever increasing amounts.
