Readers of this blog may have noticed that I recently published a book (ya’ think? –ed.).  Titled Newton and the Counterfeiter (Amazon, Powells, Barnes and Noble,Indiebound), it tells a story from Isaac Newton’s second career as boss of the Royal Mint — how he chased down the notorious currency crook William Chaloner in a battle that ranged across London and took two years.

Through that story I get to look at lots of other stuff — the way the scientific revolution worked itself out at street level, connections between ideas of faith, science, and what with the benefit/arrogance of hindsight we call magic (alchemy), and how England for a variety of reasons undertook a financial revolution in parallel to and in part propelled by the same ideas and people who led the scientific one.

In that context I look at some of the stuff that Chaloner counterfeited — truly weird new bits of paper that still represented enormous value — and I trace the evolution of Newton’s thinking about whether or not money is just a thing — a chunk of gold or silver with a pretty design — or something more abstract, more elusive…a promise.  (See this post from last year for more on that subject.)*

And in telling all this I give my readers a glimpse of a true economic and financial wild-west, one in which there is not only a dearth of anything resembling regulation, but in which the meaning and import and dangers inherent in the newborn tricks of financial engineering eluded even the brightest of thinkers, up to and including the great Isaac Newton — who in fact lost one of his shirts, at least, in the infamous South Sea Bubble.

And there I conclude, gently, by implication, that the reason financial regulation with teeth is an essential part of a modern capitalist economy is that none of us, not even the one man in history best placed to see through the fraudulent math behind bubbles, are immune to the derangement of reason that money manias educe.  (I made the same point in this post , in which I discussed both some of Newton’s ideas about money (again) and his troubles in the summer of 1720.)

All this by way of preamble that while all the above is true and, I believe, a strong argument, I can’t suggest that your humble blogger could hold a candle to lighthouse beacon of economic chops in the person of the man who just said this in an interview with The Atlantic’s Conor Clarke:

Self regulation never worked as far as macroeconomic events — whether we’re talking about post-Napoleonic War business cycles or the big south sea bubble back in Isaac Newton’s time, up to today’s time. The pendulum just swings back in the other direction.

The speaker there would be none other than Paul Samuelson, Nobel(ish) laureate, for years America’s leading Keynsian (or at least, popularizer of Keynes’ work) and author of the single most influential introductory economics textbook since the satraps of Ur first put stylus to clay.

Maybe if Tom Levenson says it, you can consider the source and ignore it.  But Samuelson?  Might as well try to bargain the ten commandments ten down to six.**

*Or, of course, just buy the damn book.

My fiance HATES earrings. I mean he really hates them. He says women are beautiful enough as they are and so why should they have to cover their skin with metal? He didn’t tell me this until we’d been dating for a while. I am someone who will wear nothing in my ears one day and then big gold hoop earrings the next and I hardly ever wear necklaces so jewelry is not that important to me. On my wedding day though I would like to wear something in my ears especially as they’ll be lots of close-up photographes. My fiance is fine with this as long as I ‘Please don’t pick Big dangly gold things’! Well, its lucky he says that as I’m looking for a pair of small pearl earrings for the wedding.

The only name that sprang to mind when it came to pearls was the Japanese company
Mikimoto as I know their pearls are supposed to be quite fine. I’ve seen some perfect examples on their website:

I am really excited that we are now selling wines from West Seattle’s only winery, right around the corner from me!  The South Seattle Community College has one of the few really comprehensive wine education programs in the state, with classes in everything like sales and marketing, enology, and full on wine making!

The chief winemaker and instructor, Peter Bos, has been a leader and very respected in the industry for years and has won several medals for the wine produced with the students at the SSCC.  The unoaked Chardonnay this year is killer!!!  I really need to stash a few bottles for myself!

Regina Daigneault is the program coordiantor as well as being an instructor.  I took a class with Regina and she was a wonderful teacher and brings a huge wealth of real world knowledge to the program.

Τα Αυστραλιανά μαργαριτάρια θεωρούνται οι Rolls Royce της παγκόσμιας βιομηχανίας μαργαριταριών. Αυτό είναι γνωστό. Εκείνο που δεν είναι γνωστό είναι πως η καλλιέργεια μαργαριταριών, που αποφέρει εκατοντάδες εκατομμύρια δολάρια ετησίως στην αυστραλιανή οικονομία, είναι μια καθαρά “Ελληνική υπόθεση”.

Την κορυφαία θέση στην βιομηχανία μαργαριταριών κατέχει η εταιρεία “Πασπάλη” (The Paspaley Family) που σύμφωνα με φετινή έκδοση του οικονομικού περιοδικού BRW είναι μια από τις πλουσιότερες οικογένειες της Αυστραλίας και η 3η πλουσιότερη Ελληνική οικογένεια της χώρας με μια περιουσία που ανέρχεται στα 620 εκατομμύρια δολάρια (0 εκατ. ήταν πέρυσι). Η οικογένεια Πασπάλη κυριαρχεί στον κλάδο καλλιέργειας μαργαριταριών της Αυστραλίας που πωλούνται με τη φίρμα South Sea.

Ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος της εταιρίας κ. Νίκολας Πάσπαλης χρησιμοποίησε επαναστατικές μεθόδους καλλιέργειας, που έδωσαν άριστα αποτελέσματα. Παρά την κρίση στο κλάδο τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια, τα μαργαριτάρια παραγωγής Πασπάλη εξακολουθούν να κυριαρχούν στην διεθνή αγορά, αφού περισσότερο από το 90% της παραγωγής εξάγεται. Η οικογένεια έχει επίσης μια τοπική αεροπορική επιχείρηση με 21 αεροσκάφη, ένα στόλο 120 αλιευτικών σκαφών, αλλά και ακίνητα στο Σίδνεϊ το Ντάργουϊν, τη Νέα Υόρκη κ. α.

Η ιστορία της οικογένειας Πασπάλη, η ίδρυση και η ανάπτυξη της “αυτοκρατορίας ” μοιάζει με παραμύθι. Τον λόγο έχει ο σημερινός διευθυντής της Νίκος Πασπάλης που λέει: “Η οικογένεια του πατέρα μου έφυγε από το Καστελόριζο κατά την διάρκεια του πρώτου παγκοσμίου πολέμου. Εκείνος γεννήθηκε το 1913 και το 1919 ακολούθησε την οικογένεια του στην Αυστραλία. “Στο πρώτο λιμάνι που έπιασε το πλοίο που τους μετέφερε, στο Κόσακ, στις ακτές της Δυτικής Αυστραλίας, που βρέχεται από τον Ινδικό Ωκεανό, κατέβηκαν κι αποφάσισαν να ξεκινήσουν εκεί τη νέα τους ζωή”.
Η οικογένεια Πασπάλη ζούσε ανάμεσα σε Αβορίγινες και Ασιάτες δύτες μαργαριταριών. Σ’ αυτή την απομακρυσμένη περιοχή οι Ευρωπαίοι ήταν ελάχιστοι και οι Έλληνες σχεδόν ανύπαρκτοι. Ήταν ξεκομμένοι από όλους και από όλα. Ούτε ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα, ούτε ύδρευση, ούτε κυβερνητικές υπηρεσίες. Ο παρθένος ωκεανός ήταν κατάσπαρτος από μεγάλα στρείδια, τα γιγαντιαία Pinctada Maxima, που μέσα τους έκρυβαν μοναδικά μαργαριτάρια. Έως τότε τα εκμεταλλευόταν μόνο οι Ασιάτες. Φυσικό ήταν, λοιπόν, μέσα σ’ αυτό το περιβάλλον ο Νικόλας Πασπάλης να μυηθεί στη αλιεία μαργαριταριών. Ξεκίνησε να δουλεύει από 14 ετών. Έτσι ξεκίνησε η περιπέτεια και το πάθος του για τα μαργαριτάρια που θα διαρκούσε για μια ζωή, με αρκετά σκαμπανεβάσματα καθώς η βιομηχανία μαργαριταριών έζησε εποχές άνθησης, αλλά και κρίσης. Αρχικά ασχολήθηκε αρχικά με τα στρείδια και κατόπιν, το 1956, με την καλλιέργεια μαργαριταριών τύπου Akoya, συνεργάστηκε με μια ιαπωνική εταιρεία. Σε σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα και σε συνεργασία με τους Ιάπωνες δημιούργησαν τις μεγαλύτερες φάρμες καλλιέργειας μαργαριταριών στον κόσμο. Η πρώτη επιχείρηση του απασχολούσε έξι υπαλλήλους. Ο ίδιος πέθανε το 1984 αλλά η επιχείρηση που έστησε αναπτύχθηκε και σήμερα εργάζονται για την εταιρεία γύρω στ 1.200 άτομα. Με ορμητήριο τις πόλεις Ντάργουϊν και Σίδνεϊ, στις οποίες η εταιρεία έχει τα κεντρικά της γραφεία, προμηθεύει κοσμηματοπωλεία ανά τον κόσμο με τα μαργαριτάρια της, διατηρεί δε καταστήματα σε όλον τον κόσμο, καθώς και 20 φάρμες μαργαριταριών και μετοχές σε ορυχεία. Τα μαργαριτάρια Πασπάλη χρησιμοποιούνται από τους διασημότερους οίκους και σχεδιαστές κοσμημάτων στον κόσμο, όπως από τους Tiffany & Co, Harry Winston, David Yurman και Mikimoto.
Για τον εορτασμό της 50ής επετείου της φάρμας Kuri της οικογένειας Πασπάλη, το 2005, η εταιρεία ανέθεσε σε 17 σχεδιαστές, μεταξύ των οποίων ο David Yurman, o Harry Winston και ο Mikimoto, τη δημιουργία μοναδικών κοσμημάτων με μαργαριτάρια των Νοτίων Θαλασσών. Το αποτέλεσμα ήταν μια έκθεση που φέρει τον τίτλο “Λευκή Μαγεία” και μπορεί κάποιος να τη θαυμάσει στο αξίας 26 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων καινούργιο κατάστημα της οικογένειας, στο Martin Place του Σίδνεϊ.
Ο σημερινός διευθυντής της αυτοκρατορίας θυμάται μια ιστορία που του διηγήθηκε ο πατέρας του. “Ήταν το 1935 και ο πατέρας ήταν σε ένα σκάφος του όταν είδε ένα όνειρο. Ονειρεύτηκε πως βρήκε ένα αξιόλογο φυσικό μαργαριτάρι αλλά μετά δολοφονήθηκε από το πλήρωμά του. Ξυπνώντας νωρίς από τον εφιάλτη, μαζί με το πλήρωμα άρχισαν τις καταδύσεις για να βρουν τα πολυπόθητα στρείδια. Ανοίγοντας το πρώτο του στρείδι, ανακάλυψε ένα μεγάλο μαργαριτάρι όπως αυτό που είχε δει στο όνειρό του. Καπετάνιοι είχαν δολοφονηθεί για πολύ μικρότερα μαργαριτάρια. Νιώθοντας φόβο, λόγω του ονείρου που είχε δει, έκρυψε το πολύτιμο εύρημα στο γάντι του και διέταξε το πλήρωμα του καραβιού του να ξεκινήσουν το ταξίδι της επιστροφής πιο γρήγορα από τον υπόλοιπο στόλο και μάλιστα άλλαξε την αρχική διαδρομή που θα ακολουθούσαν.
Το ταξίδι διήρκησε ημέρες και όταν έφθασε στη στεριά σοκαρίστηκε, καθώς έμαθε ότι ένας ξαφνικός και καταστροφικός κυκλώνας κατέστρεψε τα υπόλοιπα σκάφη του στόλου με πολλά θύματα. Τελικά το σημαδιακό όνειρο που είχε δει του έσωσε τη ζωή, ενώ εκείνο το μαργαριτάρι παρέμεινε ένα από τα καλύτερα της μακράς καριέρας του”. Σύμφωνα με το Νικ Πασπάλη ένα πολύ καλό μαργαριτάρι σήμερα πωλείται στα Tiffany’s για πάνω από εκατό χιλιάδες Ευρώ.

Άλλη μια ελληνική οικογένεια που ασχολείται με την καλλιέργεια μαργαριταριών στην Αυστραλία είναι η οικογένεια Καϊλη, η οποία επίσης έλκει την καταγωγή της από το Καστελόριζο. Η οικογένεια Καϊλη έχει έδρα την Πέρθη. Εκεί “άραξε” πριν πολλές δεκαετίες ο καπετάν Μιχάλης Καϊλης όταν “μπούχτισε” την θάλασσα και έστησε την αυτοκρατορία του με δραστηριότητες στα μαργαριτάρια και τα θαλασσινά. Σήμερα είναι η δεύτερη μεγαλύτερη εταιρία παραγωγής μαργαριταριών στην Αυστραλία (μετά την οικογένεια Πασπάλη) και από τις πλουσιότερες της χώρας. Ο καπετάν Μιχάλης πέθανε αλλά η οικογένεια Καίλη διατηρεί στενούς δεσμούς με την Ελλάδα και ειδικά με το Καστελόριζο.

Κι άλλοι ομογενείς ασχολήθηκαν με την καλλιέργεια μαργαριταριών, κυρίως από την Κάλυμνο όχι πάντα και με επιτυχία, αλλά θα ήταν παράλειψη να μην αναφέρουμε και την πρώτη Ελληνίδα. Ήταν η Μαίρη Ντάκα που πέθανε το 1985 σε ηλικία 76 ετών στο Μπρουμ. Όλοι τη θυμούνται για τη σκληρή δουλειά της. Ξεκίνησε από το μηδέν όταν έχασε τον άνδρα της από ηλεκτροπληξία και δημιούργησε μια σημαντική επιχείρηση και ένα στόλο τεσσάρων σκαφών.

Looks like we’ll have to cancel this year’s trip to the South Seas. We’ll have to leave all the canoes and outriders at home, with the sun tan lotion and hunting spears. We’ve got an assignment due right in the middle of our break; so it’s goodbye Hawaii; goodbye crowded airport terminals; goodbye volcano; goodbye salt-water crocodiles; goodbye sun-swept beaches; goodbye ladies; goodbye to all that South Seas tucker and cuisine; goodbye to eating with sticky fingers on banana leaves.

Oh, and I could use a holiday just at the moment – but at least I’m not going to get separated from my baggage; that stuff always seems to hang around. Maybe I could take the canoes down to Henley Beach again - down the white-water Torrens, but there won’t be any crocodiles, not even fresh-water ones. Feral cats in abundance though. Farewell. Adieu.

I spent most of the weekend working, lugging speaker boxes and mic stands around. On Sunday I came across a beautiful electric guitar player, playing with some indigenous lads at Semaphore’s Federal Hotel. He played some really ’slow’ notes with heaps of emotion and expression in them. I’ll have to find out his name.

My car has broken down, some sort of electrical problem. I’ve been slowly replacing everything- but it still won’t start. This is getting to be a real nuisance, especially as I’m not going down to the South Sea Islands now. Perhaps I could paddle one of my canoes around, metaphorically speaking.

I bought a new printer last week. That makes four printers I own now. This one works though; really well. The printer I left at my sister’s house works too, but it’s no good to me there. I want to get a new battery and some more memory for my laptop, as soon as I can get my car going.

I’ve hit a little glitch getting my AUS-Study payments transferred from my NewStart payments and as I’m not actually getting any benefit until they’ve finished processing my application then they’ve decided to suspend my famiily payments as well. I love the government. That’s why I won’t vote for them. There was some movement on the broadband front last week when the government announced a closing date for tenders to construct our new ‘fast’ broadband network – so we might get to see that in a year, or two, doh.

I’ve just walked up the street and purchased a new ignition coil and a little white thing Now I have to think about replacing them without getting my hands too dirty. I guess if the car won’t start I should get back to reading my new textbooks and catching up with all the stuff that I must have missed. I could have done that in the South Seas, lazing under a huge tropical sun.
