Sheffield City Council is consulting with partner organisations and members of the public on its budget proposals for 2012-13. The Council is again required to make significant savings to balance its budget, and a range of proposals are being put to council to achieve a balanced budget. A consultation event is being held on 31st January to set out the councils strategy for Youth Services. Sheffield Young Carers seek a Treasurer and Financial Expert as Trustees

Treasurer Sheffield Young Carers are looking for a Treasurer to join their exciting and vibrant trustee team. Sheffield Young Carers work for and with young carers and their families, raising awareness and offering support. The Treasurer will work with the Manager and our Financial Assistant to oversee the maintenance of financial records and budgets, report to the Board on the current finances and oversee the preparation of the annual accounts for Independent Examination. The time commitment will be circa 0.5 days per month.

Parents Assembly - Wednesday 2nd November - Reminder

Following the successful meetings in June which focused on the City Wide Learning Body and the workshops held in October which looked at the Redesign of Services to Schools, we would like to invite parents to take part in a Task and Finish group.

One of the key points which was raised at all the meetings was communication, whether it is examples of good communication or where it could be better.

The task and finish group will focus on:

How does your child’s school communicate and engage with you?

What could be improved?

How would like to be involved in decisions to do with your child’s school?

What they think of how we (the council) communicates with them and involves them in decision making?

What do you want to tell us about communication?

How would you like to continue to be involved?

The meeting will be held on Wednesday 2 November, 10 – 12pm, at Moorfoot. Please can you confirm your attendance by Tuesday 1st November

Parents around the city may want more information about academies – what they are and how they differ from the schools we currently have. Although academies have been around for some time, the government is speeding up the programme so in response to this we are keen to seek your views. Sheffield City Council and Sheffield’s schools are committed to raising the quality of education in our city and achieving the best outcomes for children, young people and families. Although we have achieved a great deal in recent years to improve standards in our schools and opportunities for children and young people, there is more to do to ensure all children are getting the best from the education system. We have also been challenged in recent months to respond to a new policy agenda announced by the Government – where schools will have greater freedom to make their own decisions. Tackling these challenges will require changing the relationship between the school system and the council and between decision makers and parents. We need to build a new and more equal partnership between Schools, the Council, parents and young people.

A key step in building this new relationship will be a large City Wide event we are organising for Parents in Sheffield. This event has been designed in partnership with parents to enable the voice and priorities of parents to be heard. We will be discussing all aspects of education and learning such as the quality of schools, helping children to succeed and how money is spent. This is a not to be missed opportunity to change things for the better.

The event will take place between 10am and 2pm on Monday 6 June, at the MegaCentre in Sheffield, we hope you can join us and have a say on these important issues. Lunch and childcare will be available.

Kids Can Do – Sport and Recreation Providers invited to tender for young people’s activities in Sheffield

Sheffield City Council is tendering for the provision of young people’s positive activities (sport and recreation activities) for young people aged 8 – 19+ across the city.

The council will be setting up a virtual marketplace website for young people to access activities and network with each other; providers will be expected to join the website within six weeks of the agreement start date.

The deadline for bid submissions is 7 March 2011. Interested organisations can get more information from the myTenders website here.

Funding available from First Bus Company

The Bus Company, First has set up a Charity and Sponsorship Committee for the North region, covering Manchester, Chester, Wirral, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield Leeds, York, Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster.

They have £50,000 to give away as grants in the next 12 months. Individuals, charities and community groups can apply for funding that fit with the criteria of:

* Young people
* Health
* The environment.

External applications must be supported by a letter from a First employee.

Swimathon Foundation Grants For Community Groups

Do you know a community group that is keen to make a splash in the swimming pool? Then why not suggest they apply for a Swimathon Foundation grant?

The Foundation is offering grants of between £300 and £2,500 to swimming pools, community organisations and charities who can demonstrate how funding will allow them to help more people participate in and enjoy swimming and to make swimming more accessible.

Whether you’re a scout leader that would like to take your troop for a day at an open air pool, a healthy living group wanting to try our Aquaerobics for the first time or a scuba diving club desperate for new equipment, a grant could be the helping hand you need!
