Ted the 5 month old Goldendoodle Mix

This handsome young man goes by the name of Ted! He is a 5 month old Goldendoodle mix with one of the sweetest and cutest personalities! He definitely loves to cuddle, and to be near people! His owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of his potty training, and his consistency when it comes to basic obedience. Ted also needed to gain more of his confidence. Since he is always around his sister, Barley, he always felt the comfort of having another dog with him constantly. His first day of Kindergarten went fantastic! He was able to do majority of the commands we asked, and he did them well! We look forward to training Ted, and to help him become more confident!

Barley the 5 month old Terrier Mix

This adorable girl is named Barley! She is a 5 month old Terrier mix, and she is Ted’s little sister! Of course,  the owners had the same concerns with Barley as well, but her personality is a lot more different! She has more confidence than Ted, and is able to be alone. Barley’s training was just as great as Ted’s! Both well trained students, and willing to learn more! We know that she’ll be doing a fantastic job at Puppy Kindergarten!

The Gasser is a sweet biker bar with a Johnny Cash shrine and serious Kings following.  Also, there were men wearing glitter helmets that embodied everything I already thought to be true about biker culture: style trailblazers.  We were happy to crash their party for the night and drink some green beer in honor of everyone’s favorite secondary color.  I like holidays, particularly the ones that have a Reese’s devoted to them.  I can’t wait for Reeaster!

We went down to Manhattan Beach today for a brunch with fab friends. Such a nice area, love it!

Sora the 4 month old Yorkshire Terrier

This is Sora! Sora is a 4 month old very adorable Yorkshire Terrier, and she is actually Riku the Pomeranian’s new little sister! Click below for Riku’s blog post!

Sora’s owner enrolled her in Puppy Kindergarten to give her a head start on all of the training that she will need! We are currently working on her potty training, socialization, and basic obedience. So far she is doing a fantastic job! This little girl has no fear. Sora approaches bigger breeds as if she was the same size as them! Her basic commands are coming along great, and she has already mastered the beginning basics of “sit” and “down”! We look forward to watching her grow!

Dillinger the 11 month old Chihuahua

This cute girl right here is named Dillinger! She is an 11 month old Chihuahua who is very sweet and playful once she gets comfortable. Her owner was concerned with her chewing, not having her “come” when called, and her general basic obedience. With only a couple of visits in, Dillinger has shown such great improvements! She is listening very well to her owner, and her basic obedience commands have been coming along great! We always look forward to her visits here at Puppy Kindergarten!

Mocha 1.5 year old Toy Poodle

Please give a warm welcome to Mocha the 1.5 year old Toy Poodle! She is very playful, and loves to make people smile! Her owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of her hyperness and not being able to listen to anything her owner asks her to do. Within a couple of visits, Mocha had a complete turn around! She was much more calm, willing to listen, and wasn’t jumping around as much as she used to! She has definitely progressed over the visits, and we are truly amazed at all of her great improvements!

Sydney the 4 month old Beagle

This adorable girl is named Sydney, and she is a 4 month old Beagle! For those of you who have never seen this color on a Beagle, they are known as Lemon Beagles! Her owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of her general basic obedience and potty training. On her first and second day of school, she refused to go potty! As she got more comfortable, on the third day, she finally let loose! Her learning ability is lightning quick, and she is definitely a very playful puppy. Sydney has already showed her signs of barking or should I say, howling! Other than that, she is so far doing a great job at Puppy Kindergarten!

Riley the 7 month old Yorkshire Terrier

This tiny little girl is named Riley! She is a 7 month old Yorkshire Terrier, and her and Sora have become best friends ever since they’ve met each other! Her owner stopped by with the concerns of her potty training and general obedience. Riley would always pee on various rugs thinking it was a potty place. At school, she has been doing a great job with her potty training, and she has been learning very quickly on when and where to go! When you get a new puppy in your household, it’s never ideal to let them have the run of the house. They do not know their boundaries, and the whole house is considered their bathroom! You as the owner, and leader must show them when and where to go. Remember that crate training is the key part of potty training as well!

Kobe the 3.5 month old German Shepherd

Everybody, please welcome this handsome boy named Kobe! Kobe is a 3.5 month old German Shepherd, and his owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of his general obedience, and potty training! Today was his first day at school, and he has definitely learned a lot! He learned socialization with various puppies of different breeds and sizes. When it came to training, he learned the “sit” and “down” command almost instantly! It was impressive indeed! We are eager to see all of his great improvements at school!

Kiddo the 10 month old Pekingese/Shih-Tzu Mix

This cute girl is named Beatrice Kiddo! Kiddo is a 10 month old Pekingese/ Shih-Tzu mix and she is quite the shy one. Her owners were concerned with her potty training and socialization. During our consultation, we noticed that Kiddo was definitely very afraid of her surroundings, and she reacted at the sight and sound of everything she heard. She was able to hop over our fence to escape! Her training will take a lot of time, patience, and consistency, but we have no doubt with Kiddo’s capabilities! It will be her first day coming up, and we look forward to training with her!

A couple of weeks ago my neighbor asked me if I would be interested in providing desserts for the FOLA fundraising dinner. FOLA devotes efforts to raise funds for worthy organizations to further art and education by hosting events and undertaking means to support those entities of our communities that can offer students of all ages as well as adults continued and new opportunities in education and the arts. I decided to make cookies that represent all the different areas of art that they support as well as the two themes for the night: recycling and Spyder Surfboards. Here are all the cookies I came up with!

40 Beers. 20 from San Diego Breweries versus 20 from Nor Cal and Oregon. That’s what The Battle was all about. 5 bartenders, over 125 Craft Beer Tasters, 1,000 Tasters poured, and many enlightened minds. That’s what The Night was for. www.craftbeertasters.com joined our friends at La Bella Cafe & Games for our first collaboration of the year. Once again we intended to dymystify the Craft Beer Culture via bringing more beers, and a diverse selection to The Southbay. I was behind the bar, and had some great beer battles under my control. Alpine Chez Monieux vs. Cascade Kriek, Pliny The Elder vs. Palate Wrecker, these were some fun beers to see people taste. We worked on a better food menu, a better beer menu, and will bring you an even better event in May 2013. Can you say San Diego vs. The U.S.?!? I’m hoping we will bring you some additional great San Diego Breweries along with some great US Breweries such as Avery, Dogfish Head, and New Belgium to name a few. Molly the 10 week old Bichon Frise

This is Molly! She is currently a 10 week old Bichon, with such a friendly personality! Her owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of her potty training, barking, and jumping. She also wanted to give Molly some basic obedience lessons as well. During the consultation, Molly was very calm, and quiet. When her owner left, she showed us her true personality…demanding! She would bark and bark if we weren’t paying attention to her, and would bark at us so we could play. If your dog is barking at you, they are demanding you to pay attention to them. Please do not acknowledge them for that behavior! Once you put your attention towards them when they bark, they will realize that that is the only way to get your attention, and will keep doing so. But, Molly is definitely a quick learner. After a couple of verbal, “No!” ‘s, she listened, and didn’t cry a peep! Her first day potty training went well, and her obedience was fantastic! We are looking forward to training her, and watching her grow!

Gracie the 4 month old Maltipoo

Please welcome Gracie! She is believed to be a 4 month old Maltipoo with a strong, yet cute personality. The staff here at Animal Plaza believes that she could be a Havanese instead of a Maltipoo due to her coloring, and hair type. Regardless, she is still very adorable! Her owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of her potty training, biting, and basic obedience. On her first day here, she did a really great job with obedience! Gracie was very driven, and motivated with food. When it came to crate training, boy did she HATE it! She cried and whined and barked the whole time she had to be inside. (Due to potty training purposes.) We have never encountered a student who didn’t give up crying inside the crate. But, by the next visit, she did fantastic! Gracie was able to go in without hesitation, and she sat quietly inside. Since she is on a trial course, we do hope that her owners choose to continue with Puppy Kindergarten. She is doing such a great job so far!

•             REMOVE your third row seats and store them in a locked garage

•             DON’T leave packages or shopping bags visible in your car

•             UNLOAD your car immediately when you get home

•             Do not leave items in your car overnight

•             SET your alarm or anti-theft device

Brew Master Chuck Silva

On Wednesday January 16, 2013 Chuck Silva, Green Flash Brewing Co.’s Brewmaster, visited La Bella Cafe & Games in Chula Vista, CA the Southbay of San Diego. This was a momentous occasion for many reasons. One such reason is that Green Flash is one of San Diego’s premiere breweries, and has been for over 10 years. Moreover, they have helped to put and keep San Diego on the proverbial Craft Beer worldwide map. Chuck Silva, moreover, isn’t just a Brewmaster, he is a living legend in the Craft Beer world with innovation, imagination, and dedication behind his success. He came to chat beers with the people of the Southbay. What makes that so important is that when one thinks of the Southbay, for better or worse, “Craft Beer Destination” is not the first thing to come to mind. This event, however, is a big step in changing that designation. As we learned this past week, based on the large and steady crowed that Chuck attracted, there are a ton of Craft Beer fans in the Southbay that are well educated in, dedicated to, and in desire of Craft Beer. Being able to try the ambrosia brewed by the man who is pouring it and teaching you about it is quite an experience. One that we hope to recreate again soon with other breweries and our friends in The Southbay.

A Belgian Lambic aged in red wine barrels. Generous amounts of the tart montmorency cherry were added after 12 months of aging. Sour from lactic and acetic acids produced from special wild yeasts. A delicious tart, sour treat.

Brewery: Cascade
Name: Kriek
Style: Kriek
ABV: 6.6%
IBU: 100+
Winter Seasonal. Brewed with 4 types of cherries, aged in oak for one year. Cascade Kriek Ale spends over 6 months of lactic fermentation and aging in small oak barrels. This “Belgian Flanders Style Red Ale” is refermented with a blend of fresh whole Northwest cherries and then hand bottled. Cascade Kriek Ale is bottle fermented and should be refrigerated or stored at cellar temp and served at 45 to 50 degrees.

Palate Wrecker was originally brewed for the Hamilton’s Tavern 2nd Anniversary celebration. It’s the most complicated West Coast–inspired IPA we have ever brewed—mashing and sparging with hopped wort, in addition to our hop layering regimen for IPA. We use almost 6 lbs/bbl of Columbus and Centennial hops to create this very bitter hop monster (tested at 149 IBU and no extracts in case you were wondering). By popular demand, it is now released for the world to enjoy (even though this beer isn’t for everyone, only the real hop heads!!!).

Pliny the Elder is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

The Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great.

Brewery: Mammoth Brewing Co.
Name: 395
Style: IPA
ABV: 8%
IBU: 60
An ode to the Owens Valley and the Highway 395 corridor, this Double IPA is distinctly bolder than out Epic IPA and celebrates the aromas of wild local fresh hops, sage, and juniper.

Noodle and Perrin playing Tug-of-War

Take a look at Noodle the 5 month old Pomeranian, and Perrin the just recently turned 2 year old Weimeraner! They are happily playing tug-of-war together without any of them being scared. Usually smaller breeds are afraid to play with bigger breeds, especially ones who are 7x their size! This is another reason why socialization is so very important to have within a dog’s life! They are never stressed about other dogs, and they won’t be afraid to play with anyone! Also, Perrin was playing very gently with Noodle. He knows that he is a lot smaller, and not as strong, so he wasn’t pulling or swinging the rope as hard as he could’ve. Bigger breeds learn how to play with smaller breeds as well. They learn their differences. Socialize your dog as much as you can! Don’t be afraid to have them play with different sized breeds!

Miu Miu the 4 month old Shih-Tzu

Everyone please welcome Miu Miu! She is an almost 4 month old Shih-Tzu puppy, and her parents are actual previous students of Puppy Kindergarten!

Her owner just wanted Miu Miu to have basic obedience and socialization. She is doing fantastic! We have noticed that she was extremely hyper, and would just love to be all over the place. With a few visits of puppy kindergarten, she has calmed down A LOT! A total transformation. We’re certain that she’ll be doing great at school, and we’re very excited to see her improvements!

Lou Lou the 5 month Yorkshire Terrier

Everyone welcome Lou Lou the 5 month old Yorkshire Terrier! Lou Lou’s mom stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of her potty training and her biting. Since they were to move back to Nevada in 2 weeks, we had to do some intensive training with Lou Lou. This included her having to come every day for 2 weeks. We usually wouldn’t recommend for a dog to go to a training class every day, for this causes stress to them. But since we only had a little bit of time with her, we couldn’t waste time! Lou Lou’s owner had told us that ever since she has had her, she has never been able to poop on the pad. Shockingly, on her first day, she went to the pee pad all by herself, and pooped on it! We praised her uncontrollably and rewarded her with the best treat! That same night, she was able to poop on the pad as well! Although intensive training for 2 weeks, this doesn’t mean that Lou Lou will be potty trained completely. This takes time and patience. We also added some basic obedience in there, and Lou Lou is doing a fantastic job. She is very motivated and a quick learner at that! We are sad to have to see her go so soon, but we know she’ll be doing great in her new home in Nevada with her loving family!

Teaching your dog the “down” command is very important. Especially for aggressive dogs. This command is probably the number one command you should teach an aggressive dog! (And also, this is the first command that the father dog teaches his pups in the wild.) The reason? If they were to attack, being in this position would slow them down a bit/protect them, and you are able to catch them, rather then them being in the “sit” position. Kotaro is showing the perfect “down” position, with great eye contact as well! He also allowed us to put on his little reindeer antlers, which also isn’t an easy task for most! Great job Kotaro!

Although there are treats sitting in front of them, (left to right) Emi, Kotaro, Matsukaze, Yuzu, Sakura, and Riri are able to do the “down-stay” command while keeping great eye contact with the unseen trainers. Eye contact is very important whilst training! You need to know that they are paying attention to you, and they aren’t doing the command only for the treat itself. Practice makes perfect. Happy training!

Oscar the 3 month old Pomerian Yorkshire Terrier mix

Please welcome Oscar! Oscar is a 3 month old Pomeranian and Yorkshire Terrier mix! His owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of his potty training, mouthing, and whining. On his first day, he seemed to be doing a pretty fantastic job! In fact, he held his restroom for over 5 hours! That is pretty impressive, especially for a 3 month old puppy. He was a tad scared towards our other students, but with some time and getting used to, he started to play with them! We did notice that he is not used to being handled. When we started to groom him, and touch his paws, legs, stomach, he would scream and cry.

Yikes!

A fall like that’s gotta hurt.

I have been writing much better (i.e., more prolifically) this year than during last year’s NaNoWriMo. I will probably hit the 50k mark today or tomorrow and will certainly exceed it by month’s end. Last year, I “finished” on November 29 with just barely 50k words.

I credit this increase in productivity to a variety of reasons, including having a better list of scenes, having read a lot about writing during the year and, as mentioned in a previous post, word counts can be addictive.

I am very happy with what I’ve done so far, however, I recognize that my WIP will require considerable editing and revision – next year. December will be a chance to work on some different writing projects for a month.

Olive the 3.5 month old Shetland Sheepdog

Say hello to our very first, and very cute Shetland Sheepdog named Olive! Olive is 3.5 months old, and her owner stopped by Puppy Kindergarten with the concerns of her potty training, biting, and barking.  As far as potty training, she is doing pretty well! We have definitely noticed that Olive loves to bark at anything and anyone. She can be quite the demanding one. When your dog is barking at you, they are doing the “demanding bark”. You must either ignore them, or say, “no!” When you turn your attention towards them when they bark at you, they will quickly realize, and will start to do so more often. You are obeying them, thus making them YOUR leader. Other than that, Olive is doing great, she’s a very intelligent girl, and we’re excited to be working with her!
