Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965) was an American writer, best known for the play, “A Raisin in the Sun” (1957). It was the first play by a black woman to appear on Broadway.

James Baldwin:

… never before, in the entire history of the American theater, had so much of the truth of black people’s lives been seen on the stage.

It is such a great play that even with a limited actor like Sean Combs playing the lead it is still powerful.

The play is about a black family that buys a house in a white suburb – something her own family did. The first two acts are kind of slow but the last act about moving day is pure, utter genius.

In 1961 it was made into a Hollywood film starring Sidney Poitier, who had played the lead on Broadway. She wrote the screenplay.

Her two other main plays are “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window”, which was on Broadway in 1964 but was not a hit, and “Les Blancs”.

Some of her writings were made into an autobiography after her death, “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” (1969). James  Baldwin wrote a beautiful introduction, “Sweet Lorraine”.

Incomplete works at the time of her death:

• “Toussant”, an opera
• “All the Dark and Beautiful Warriors”, an autobiographical novel

She was also thinking of doing plays on Pharaoh Akhnaton, Mary Wollstonecraft and Charles Chesnutt’s “The Marrow of Tradition” (1901).

Born on Chicago’s Southside. her family moved to a white suburb when she was eight. Angry whites gathered in front of their house.  A brick was thrown through the window that narrowly missed her. The police were unwilling to protect them. Later the state supreme court ordered them out of the house.

In 1948 she went to the University of Wisconsin. There she became interested in left-wing politics and theatre, studying Ibsen and Strindberg.

In 1950 she dropped out and headed for New York. There she took courses at the New School and, for three years, wrote regularly for Paul Robeson’s Freedom. Later she taught school in Harlem and took part in protests. At one protest she met Robert Nemiroff, whom she married in 1953. In 1956 he wrote a hit song with a friend (“Cindy, Oh, Cindy”) which allowed her to become a full-time writer. She started writing “A Raisin in the Sun”.

In 1960 she wrote “The Drinking Gourd”, a television show for NBC about slavery. NBC never aired it because it was too violent and too “divisive”. But you can read it in “Lorraine Hansberry: The Collected Last Plays” (1983). 

In 1962 she joined SNCC and a year later she and James Baldwin went to see Robert Kennedy, then the Attorney General, to try to get him to understand race in America.

In 1963 she began to lose her strength: the doctors said she had pancreatic cancer. Two years later she was dead – at age 34. Over 600 came to her funeral in Harlem.

I was prowling the streets of  southside on a Monday, which I do not accustom, when I see posters posted up telling me that my favorite mambo band had preformed Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and tonight Monday,  was the last show before he headed back to La Republica, his home.  I knew I had to see this band or live with a deep seeded regret and a constant dagger in my chest knowing that there may not be a next time to see what maybe the best merengue mambo show since  Rod Stewart.

So, against my better judgement I tell mi amorzipan that im going to the southside to see El mas loco de to’  Tito Swing, and I would need a ride there. She totally understood.

Decked out in my shiny shoes and my expensive Ralph Lauren western shirt  I grabbed my last $100 bill and went off to see the show at about 11:oo pm on a Monday. To my surprise I was early… I was the first one there, me and 3 chubby chix. I accepted my newly found groupie status swallowed the $25 cover and washed it down with a $6 Presidente. This went on till about 1 am, it had been $40 later when  realized… “I dont even have a buzz!”.

Out in front I smoked my Newports and took tokes of the bluest buds in Brooklyn from my one hitter. I noticed down the street there was some jokers doing the same, but even bolder they were brown baggin beers right out side the place. So you know I had to do the same!  By 3 a.m. I was pretty loose, down to my last $20 and I knew I wasnt making it into work tommorow, so I ask the hostess if the bands gonna play. Right then the hooligans from outside rush in bringing a kushy cloud with them and hop on stage. A minute later that bass line smacked me in the face and that cowbell went off, Dominican hottties rushed the stage and all the gangstas drinking Chivas crowded around. By far one of the baddest shows I seen in NYC.

Next time you can come keep me company.

Meistens greife ich mir jeden Morgen auf dem Weg zur EL oder zum Bus eines der täglich erscheinenden kostenlosen Newspaper. Die paar Seiten des RedEye enthalten überwiegend Schrott, viel Slang, Gossip, Werbung und einige Nachrichten. Leider habe ich immer noch zu wenig von der Southside gesehen. Zwar sitze ich in der EL immer Richtung Southside, aber ich steige ich spätestens im South Loop (südlichster Teil Downtowns), wo ich arbeite, meistens aus.  Zum Zeitvertreib bis dahin dient dieses Blatt jedoch. Regelmäßig lese ich erneut von Schiesserein und Mord auf der Southside oder Far Westside (“Homicide Tracker”). Für mich als Europäer ist ist dieses Maß und diese Form der Kriminalität nicht die Gewohnheit. Chicago hat ein großes Problem mit Gangs und Jugendlichen, die sich gegenseitig abknallen. November 5: The seven female homicide victims killed in the last week and a half represent 14 percent of all female homicide victims this year, according to a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data.

On Sunday, a 16-year-old woman died from assault wounds while a 24-year-old woman was shot to death in Austin.

Last week, a 3-month-old Avalon Park girl died after child abuse; and a 32-year-old woman was beaten to death in Englewood. A 47-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Pullman; and a 46-year-old woman was shot to death in West Englewood. In Hermosa, a 22-year-old woman was found shot to death, according to information from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Citywide, October ended with 37 homicides, including a fatal car crash that killed two people in West Englewood. The driver in that crash initially was charged with reckless homicide. Chicago police recorded 46 murders in October last year.

So far in November, seven homicides have been recorded. Police logged 38 in November 2008.

Finally, with only months left before the deadline, the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization has voted to push for High Speed Rail to the Southside, terminating in Downtown Norfolk. The vote was unanimous among those in attendance. Nay-sayers might say that it doesn’t really mean that there is support, since four of the Peninsula cities went unrepresented but they had their chance. They obviously did not think that it was important enough for them to need to go. I have to say, however, that the Mayor of Hampton, Molly Ward, should get some sort of reward. Fhe was quoted as saying, “You do whats best for the region and the commonwealth. You don’t make any progress when you just say no.” That was definitely a show of regionalism. If only our other localities had mayors that were smart enough to speak out publicly and say that it wasn’t just about what was good for their city, but instead it was about what was good for the region. Good job Mayor Ward.

This move is not the final say, however. It will not be final until the Commonwealth Transportation Board votes on the issue. If it passed the Board, it opens the door to High Speed Rail to Hampton Roads. This new High Speed line will terminate near Harbor Park, where a proposed multi-modal station would be built where High Speed Rail, Light Rail, and local buses could meet. All is not lost for the Peninsula, however. Under this plan they would receive upgrades to their current rail service.

Although my current accommodation doesn’t have great views (though there is a nice plant outside the window) my room in the last sharehouse did.  I was able to take some great pictures from up there as well as getting a few when visiting other parts of the city.  Here’s a a few.

Been watching Youtube abit and gotten some inspiration for new flips, like Rayden and Kickflip.

-Rayden is like a wallflip but you use your hands on the wall to do a frontflip inwards…kinda scary.

-Kickflip is like you go into a kung fu jumpkick, but then do an inverted sideflip…tricky, but so cool.

I also wanna try an Arabian wallflip, where as you run as if into a regular wallflip, but then you twist midair into a frontflip outwards.

COOL!

Also gotta buy some new hairspray, to fix my big hair with…I really need a new haircut soon…it’s so long and out of shape, just need the money.
It’s been just about 2 months since my last haircut, at Björn Axén in town, I am mos def going back there, because it was so cool.
-but also to see the wonderful receptionist again… I am not in love anymore, but she is so nice eitherway ^^
Speaking about hair, I am going to re-colour it this evening again; RED.
Though i wanted to bleach it…but that tears my hair apart too much…need to recover

I dont think I mentioned the other night, but I was out with my friends drinking on Friday.
But it kinda sucked, because there are no good places to go here in Stockholm, the southside.
In the inner city it is all fancy pantsy wanna be LA so there’s no chance for a person like me to get in…But on the Southside, there are just so many disgusting, horrible and ugly Southside people…I hate em all, and I wanna kill them all so badly.

I did however check out one place on the webs, a place called BLÅ which apparently is supposed to be a cool place, with very cheap drinks.
And , where the girls are just as cheap.
Im planning on going there next weekend just to try it out.

Last Nights Gathering x Bonita Applebum

so here we go with another successful night of living.
It was exactly what i needed after a stressful few weeks of moving and finding a place.
I am overall feeling pretty happy with life.
So because of this great feeling, if been listening to a lot of dope ass feel good music.
Since you know i love you all, Ive got some great music to help you get through the day.

Last night was pretty hilarious.
My friend Dan brought his friends in town so he had a few folks over.
My friend Yazzie said she was gonna bring a few friends and that turned into about 15.
She rolls deep, i knew this, yet i still caught off guard when i opened the door to this handful of people.
All was well though, we played a bunch of games. Most that i won at, beer pong and foosball, who wants some.

After the drunkenness set in, more and more people started dancing and who dosent love a dance party.

Yep, you guessed it by the pic … fall is quite quickly on it’s way. (BTW – isn’t it interesting how simple words like “quite quickly” when put together make you sound like you have some command of the English language??).
It’s time to get the leaf rake out, pull the fish and frogs out of the pond (if you do that), find your kid that fall / winter coat, and go back to supporting your local Starbucks (personally I support local companies like Crazy Mocha in Pittsburgh, but SWB realizes most are weak towards simple advertising tactics and don’t have the strength to support local biz …. but that’s another posting). It’s also time to attempt to locate and sift through years of Christmas decorations (because you probably dumped those decorations on top of your fall decorations and don’t remember which box(s) they are in).

Why to do many look towards the season change?

Simple.

We have something new to complain about …. hence:

People think they look forward to the fall season (or spring, etc) because of things like the beauty of it, cuddles with a loved one, bringing back of childhood memories …. but no – it really is just so we can have something new to complain about, nothing more.

You know those wonderful kids that were playing outside all summer? … they will now be inside all day going “mommy Mommy MOMMYYYYYYY!!!” … or just yelling all the new obscenities they just learned at school, so we can probably at the following to our list of complaints:

And the pets that can’t wait to get outside to do their “thing”,will now want to stay inside where it’s warm and of course, do their thing there – so we can add:

honey, the @%%#^ cat ate that #$%##%$ frog and two of the #$%#% fish, and my Scrooge figurine off of the train set.

So, really, why the picture of the cozy looking bench during fall in the city park?

The reality is … after you’ve made your first batch of Limoncello because you read my last article and all of the inhabitants of your household slowly move back in from the summer months ….. that’s probably where you will end up (with your bottle of Limoncello).

PS – That thing with the cat, the frog, and the fish …. yep …. that actually happens in my house.

Tucked between the houses of a quiet street on Pittsburgh’s south side is a bar experience unlike any other, Bar 11. Without fail you will find bartenders dressed as anything from mad scientists to hot dogs. A seemingly endless supply of candy and toys litter the bar top and intoxicated patrons play the drum set suspended from the ceiling, although what starts as playing along with the music becomes a frenzied pounding by the end of the night. Perhaps the only thing crazier than the people who work here are the themed parties they throw.  The sand covered floor, leftover from a luau, was just cleaned up for Bar 11’s craziest party, their summer rain party. And when they say rain they mean it. Don’t expect to leave the bar anything but completely soaked on this night because the water will be above your ankles. Most partiers just come out in their swim suits and the usual toy rings and soldiers are swapped for goggles and inner tubes on this night. This bar is without a doubt one of the craziest times you will ever have in Pittsburgh.
