Not sure how this even came up…over dinner on Friday night (Da Silvano – Jennifer Aniston goes there and now so do I), somehow bathhouses came up. So, we decided that we would go to the Russian & Turkish Baths on Saturday morning.

This place has been around since 1892. I think there may have been a Seinfeld episode based on this place. Very very very authentic and ‘old school’…it’s $30 admission…includes robes, ’shorts’, facilities, etc. It is NOT Elizabeth Arden. It is NOT for the shy or faint-hearted. Pretty much you are walking around half naked with a bunch of fat Russian men. And getting beaten.  I’ll get back to that in a minute!  We didn’t bring bathing suits which I would highly HIGHLY recommend. We wore these black robes, which had the unfortunate problem of exposing ’side boob’ when you least expected it…and underneath (and you are required to wear these on co-ed days – and naturally, we were there on a co-ed days – and you are grateful that it’s a requirement!) we wore this unisex gigantic shorts.

So, facilities…Russian Sauna…the hottest *&$@ sauna in the world, I swear.  It’s almost painful. And that’s before the beating! haha and not kidding. Ice cold pool. Again, painful. But in a good way. Turkish Room (steam room). Aromatherapy Room (also steamy). Swedish Shower. Sun Deck.  Back to the Russian Sauna…here’s the deets:

This authentic russian room is the highlight of every visit to the baths. The oven is filled with 20,000 lbs. of rock which are cooked overnight. During the day, these rocks give off an intense heat. This is one of the few rooms of its kind in the United States.

Surrounding a huge rock-walled furnace, women and men alike will be immersed in a hot, very steamy, stone furnaced “radiant heat”. When the heat starts to get unbearable, take one of the dozens of buckets around the room, fill it with ice cold water, and like the Russians hundreds of years before you have done, dump it over your head. Now don’t be self-conscious because as you will soon notice, everyone is dousing themselves with buckets of water. In that sheer moment as the ice-cold water pours over you, comes one of the most enjoyable moments you will ever experience. It is sheer delight. You can also request a traditional Russian Platza treatment.

This was the first room we walked into. It’s so so so freaking hot. There are men everywhere. Sweating. Half naked. More than half, actually. People are pouring buckets of ice old water on their heads. In one corner, a guy is getting a massage, but the masseuse is alternately walking on his back and yanking the guy’s legs up and over his head. In another corner, an enormous guy is getting beaten with a flogger of some sort and having ice cold buckets of water poured all over him. I was like “HOLY SHIT, I am not in Arlington anymore!”. And “get me the F*CK out of here!”  The beating is the Russian Platza treatment. For only $35 you too can be publicly beaten. There was no way in HELL I was going to do that. No way. Robin went off to get a massage (so cool – no appts before hand…you just ask and go have it done) and Ashley and I did the other steam rooms. Which were great. My sinuses were very very happy. But, I started thinking that okay, I’m here. In a Russian bathhouse. When am I ever going to do this again? Etc. So, I decided to just go for it…and I asked for  the platza!!  Ashley did it at the same time (I did’t want that little b*tch watching me get beaten AND I knew that if I saw her go first I would chicken out) Here’s a description of it:

Lie down while in the Russian Room and aplatza specialist will scrub you (actually beat you) with a broom made of fresh oak leaves, sopping with olive oil soap. Both arms pulled behind my back and torso lifted off the step. Squealing. Next, both legs are lifted up and I am bent in half in a way I have never been before. More cold water please. YES.  Roll over. One leg up and over my head. And then the other. More soapy scrubbing and whacking and brushing. Towel still over the head. What’s happening?  Hot water rinsing soap off. Then nothing. COLD BUCKET OF WATER. Thank you. Thank you. Sit up. Cold water. Hot water. He stands me up (can’t really walk, shaky) and walks me out and orders me into the cold pool. I go. So cold. Polar Bear Club cold. Numb. He dresses me in a dry robe and wraps me in a warm towel. Walks me to a bench and sits me down. It’s over. This all took 10 minutes. I don’t know my own name at this point.

We stayed for over 3 hours. I could have stayed longer. I told random people sitting near me that I was going to move, not just to NYC, but actually into the bathhouse. Live there. Be flogged. And blissed out. Robin did a massage (and mud/salt treatment) that apparently like a physical therapy session, wrapped in a chiropractor visit, topped off with the dude washing and conditioning her hair. OMG. How amazing does that sound?

Oh, just to be clear. Not sexy. Not sexual. Nothing felt weird or inappropriate. No leering from the male onlookers. It was just so amazing. I don’t think this long winded description did it justice. It was the best spa experience of my life. Seriously. And I have been to some serious spas. Including the sublime Spa Grande at the Grand Wailea in Maui. If you get a chance, GO. Definitely.  Well, fancy friends like “Debbie” or “Fawn” might not want to go. You may be horrified. But, the rest of you? Do it. Love it. Beg for more.

Today, I was offered a job! By which this whole process from being called down for an interview, 2nd interview & being offered e job all happened so quickly! It was only last Friday I went in e late morning for an interview, then was called to go back in e evening (apparently for e 2nd interview), & then this afternoon I was called up & informed of e job offer & req to go down in e evening for e details!

Quite ‘ridiculous’ in this sense, doesn’t it? lol* & mummy still said I most prob wldn’t get e job… (hahaha~ let me narrate e so-called ‘dumb’ thing i did ba)

During e 2nd interview with e big boss, there was this qn he asked me abt earliest date of commencement…

Boss: “So your earliest date of commencement is 7 Dec… That’s 2 wks later. I thought you are not working now?”
Me: “Yes, I’m not working now.”
Boss: “Why must wait until 2 wks then?”
Me: “Because I have a spa appointment on 4 Dec with my mum…”
Boss’ immediate reaction – big chuckle like it’s a joke
In my head – abit taken aback by his reaction & felt rather embarassed
Me: “It has to be a wkday & I thought it wldn’t be convenient to take no-pay leave, so I put 7 Dec.”
Boss’ reaction – still finding it like quite ridiculous & smiling/ laughing abt it
Me: “But of coz if you need me to start work earlier, I can always make arrangements. I just put 7 Dec as my preferred date to start work.”

That was what happened. & my mum said i was ’stupid’ to be so honest, & shld have prob said i got appt or something. lol* but I didn’t think too much then la… & I tot it should be ok? I’m just telling e truth. Anywayz…

So prob mummy was right, they really needed some1 urgently, or maybe e other applicants were pretty ‘lousy’. But somehow i feel quite ‘relieved’ tt they r offering me e job, at least like, I’m wanted. It boosts my confidence, definitely. My first interview with e 1st company, & I got it. Usually I’m quite confident of myself in terms of getting a job… I mean, I don’t really worry too much abt nt being able to find a job, rather i am more worried abt getting a gd 1. I wonder if I’m over confident now… lol* I hope not.

I guess, I will most prob decline e job offer. I’d rather take a longer time to find e ‘right’ job than hastily jump into 1 coz I need income. Gotta get back to them by tom evening/ wed morn. I still hope to work in a big company. Pls call me Canon~

Julweekend på Stenungsbaden Yacht Club

Hej!

Nu är snart lugnet över, november lider mot sitt slut och julrushens december är i antågande. Men ännu är det inte för sent att få ett fridfull julfirande. Vem vill inte slå sig ner vid ett dukat bord och lämna disken och stöket därhän? Passa på att njuta av vårt generösa julbord och koppla av i en omgivning fri från stress under en julweekend på vårt hotell. I could swear this new beauty product shop, Cypress Beauty & Co., had been on Pearl Street for only a week or so, but I was informed today they’ve been there for a good month and a half.

How I did not notice it sooner is a mystery to me, especially since there is good reason to take note. There’s no Sephora in Boulder yet, so Cypress fulfills an important need: specifically, the “my-skin-is-starting-to-feel-and-look-like-a-crocodile-now-that-it-is-winter-in-Colorado-can-you-please-help-me-brighten-it-up” need.

They stock top makeup brands like Smashbox and Cargo, as well as high-end skincare products like Dr. Brandt’s and Skinceuticals. And unlike Sephora, they actually have…sales! Woo hoo! Today they had 20% several entire product lines and the (very friendly) staff let us know that facials (they also have skin spa services) were on special today for $49.

I foresee a fun girls’ day out ahead: Stop next door at Lindsay’s for some Häagen Dazs pralines and cream, then head over for a facial and makeover at Cypress.

Thanks to Susan at the Parknasilla Resort in Sneem Co Kerry I got to experience what has to be Irelands best kept secret for finding peace and tranquility. It is so beautiful there and the whole experience of the hotel, the accommodation,  the food and of course the spa is truely wonderful. Not to mention the company. I spent the day and evening  in the company of 19 women from the Kerry Business Womens Network.  I had a hard job dragging myself back over the mountains to Miltown. The Parknasilla do fantastic deals so check them out and take time out for yourself. You are worth it.

Già in quegli anni il dibattito politico sottolineava i rischi enormi dovuti dalla perdita di realizzare gli interessi pubblici a vantaggio di quelli privati, cioè delle SpA tramite questo sistema palesemente non meritocratico. Purtroppo la Corte Costituzionale non si è espressa a favore dei diritti e degli interessi pubblici palesemente violati da queste norme pensate da banchieri stranieri ed introdotte lentamente, nel frattempo le televisioni hanno anestetizzato la capacità critica collettiva e l’opinione pubblica con gli intrattenimenti televisivi e la cancellazione dell’educazione civica dalle scuole.

Intanto nel 2010 entra in vigore il Trattato di Lisbona che legalizza gli omicidi di Stato ed autorizza i Governi a “curare” le “sommosse” con la violenza. E ci sono “soggetti politici” che fomentano il popolo a ribellarsi, sarà un caso?

Carlo Vulpio: Figuriamoci cosa accadrebbe, è l’interrogativo che sorge spontaneo e sul quale tutti dovremmo riflettere, se in qualche piega dell’ordinamento, magari in maniera surrettizia, si nascondesse la previsione di poter irrogare una qualche forma di “pena di morte”, o peggio, di poter esercitare impunemente – in quanto protetti da un articolo di legge, un comma, un inciso, un allegato, un protocollo – il “diritto” di sopprimere la vita altrui, insomma cosa accadrebbe se fosse una norma a prevedere la “licenza di uccidere”.

Le norme antidemocratiche si fermano in maniera civile e democratica.

In un Paese realmente democratico, dotato di strumenti efficaci di democrazia diretta non sarebbe potuta accadere un’usurpazione di questo tipo, poiché il popolo sovrano avrebbe avuto il potere di revisionare le eventuali leggi antidemocratiche.

Recently I have been studying and feeling the stress building up as I approach the month of December… A friend of mine suggested going to the Aurora Spa retreat together, so I tagged along! I booked myself in for a kitya karnu treatment and hearing raving reviews about it as well, I was really looking forward to it.

Arriving at the spa, the entrance to it is so peaceful. You work into the dimly lit lobby, then up a flight of  slate coloured stairs, before you see a water feature and around the right side, the door opens into the reception of the spa. It felt warm and bright inside. Then you get brought up a flight of cream coloured stairs to the waiting area where you have a view of the sunbaking deck. The therapist explained to me where my locker is and what to get changed into. Basically for the treatment, I wore bikini bottoms and just wrapped myself into a bathing robe and changed into massage slippers. And then wait in the waiting area. I then saw my friend and we sat down for some herbal tea and filled the forms..until our therapists came to bring us in for the treatment.

I was brought into a small changeroom where I had to unrobe and wrap myself with a towel. There was a choice of two aromatic oils ( one lime&rose and the other lavender) and two salts (one kakadu lime salts and one white clay salts). I chose the strongest smelling ones as I needed something more invigorating. Then the therapist showed me into a steam room where there was a bed inside the steaming room. It was hot steamy and hard to breathe at first, but when I lied down ,I found myself relaxing into it. The therapist was very reassuring, and told me if I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I could let her know.

First I lied on my tummy, face down. She scrubbed my legs and back with the oil first before sprinkly the salts and then rubbing them into my skin. The sprinkling of the warmed salts felt lovely. I felt like a chicken being marinated.8) Then she washed me with warm water from a sprinkler. It was different. Then I was given a sip of cold water before I turned around.. She then placed a modesty towel over my front before she massaged my face with a cleanser. Then she placed a mask on my face before she applied a thick mask onto my hair. A cool towel was applied over my face several times, which was really refreshing and pleasant while she applied oil over my body again and then sprinkled salts generously, then scrubbed me.  And towards the end, a very cold towel was placed over my eyes and then hot water was sprinkled over me to wash the salts away.

At the very end, I was told by the therapist I could take my time to sit up and have a shower. The shower was wonderful. I couldn’t believe the salts look so blackish on the towels. My hair felt soft and moisturised. Going out of the room, the therapist guided me back to the changeroom where I got out of the wet bikini bottoms and changed into my dry robe and she gave me an extra towel for my wet hair. Then she sat me down to apply Darphin’s serum and moisturiser over my face (felt sooo wonderful) and then guided me back to the waiting area to have a cup of tea. My friend came out not long after. I felt soo relaxed and I told my friend that I thought that I was only going to be in the steaming room for 5 mins but turned out it was going to be an hour in there! I must say this was a very unique spa experience and is so warming! I highly reccomend it for a cooler day..and yes you will have soft silky skin after and you will feel revitalised.A lil secret..I loved the rich body cream in the changeroom too.. I then realised that I have found a good spa place to go to in Melbourne. However I must say I recommend going on the weekdays. Sat seemed really busy!

Till och med DHL-chauffören klagade på vädret i fredags. Ska det vara så här kan man undra? Mörkt och regn. Minusgraderna saknas. Det blir till att fortsätta kurandet inomhus och hitta sina egna små knep att övervintra. Jag har packat spapaket för fullt några dagar nu. Paket fulla av njutning och det där lilla extra som kan lyfta undan hösttristessen en stund. Lisen Organics ljuvliga saltskrubb fylld med dofter av citrus och ingefära är en underbar kompis i dusch eller bastu eller hennes grantvål som garanterat piggar upp en kulen vardagsmorgon.

Nytt i spabutiken är de snygga tvålkopparna i betong med punktskrift. Tvål står det för den som undrar. En ny variant på badborste finns nu också, en med långt skaft för lite rejälare tag och bättre räckvidd.
