Space Invader in Bangkok

I must have passed this spot a thousand times and didn’t notice the small mosaic “Space Invader” on a roadside electrical box. It’s in a construction zone so I think it is at risk.

I observed one before on Silom Road and had no idea what it was. Then a Flickr friend told me they’re all over the place. See for example http://www.space-invaders.com/sominv.html for a worldwide map and http://www.flickr.com/photos/tofz4u/sets/72157604468532120/ for pictures of others in Bangkok.

They’re a lot more inventive than the BNE graffiti.

Viewed from the bathroom window, these flags are looking more like a Space Invader every day.

El actor y escritor Justin Theroux está haciendo un guión para hacer la cinta de “Space Invader”, una comedia romántica para la FOX.

Según el Hollywood Reporter, Mike Lisbe y Nate Reger ya vendieron el proyecto que trata de un hombre que decide irse al espacio después de que sospecha de que su novia de toda la vida, lo está engañando con otro astronauta. El Actor Will Arnett será uno de los que la protagonicen.

El rumor está en que es muy posible que Theroux sea el director de esta cinta también.

Y todavía no nos cuentan cuando la van a comenzar a filmar.

On May, 28 I blogged about Space Invaders in Rotterdam. (http://wp.me/punIp-5o)  Today I have to blog about it again, and the reason is not because I want to, I just have to! Emotions such as anger and sadness rival to be the reason for this blog. Why? I found out that the blue mosaic of the Space Invader at the Koninginnebrug has been removed! Who would do such a thing? Space Invader mosaics are  part of the cityscape in various cities around the world. They are well accepted for years so regarding the Rotterdam Space Invaders I say hands off!!!

Orbi and the gang over at Space Invader HQ have been pretty busy lately, after droppping the ‘Hello, My Game Is…’ prints in two different colour ways just last week and this week, out of no where BAM!! We have the next release of the the Invasion Series kits, this one here is IK#11 aka ‘Blue’ and boy o boy I am amped add another one to my collection? Yes sir!! So, the signed version SOLD OUT lickety split and there are a few still left of the unsigned version. Theses 8.6 x 6.3 cm tile kits have an edition size of 150(unsigned) and price is €160 each and the edition size of 30(signed) and they cost €300 each. Ouch!

Depuis 1998, Invader sème ses mosaïques dans les villes du monde entier, incognito, car l’artiste français ne souhaite pas se démasquer…Bangkok,Londres, New York… mais d’abord Paris, la ville où il a le plus sévi.

Les mosaïques de cet artiste représentent des personnages d’un célèbre jeu vidéo de la fin des années 1970, Space Invaders. Du fait de la technologie élémentaire de l’époque, ils sont très pixellisés et donc reproductibles en mosaïque. Un pixel est assigné à un carré. De plus, c’est un matériau difficilement altérable, qui résiste très bien aux ravages du temps. Ces Space Invaders sont cimentés sur les murs de la ville dans les endroits les plus inattendus. Tous sont indexés, photographiés et situés, sur des cartes par leur auteur. Certaines d’entre elles, les plus achevées, ont été produites en plusieurs milliers d’exemplaires à l’aide de sponsors locaux, et distribuées gratuitement dans les villes touchées. Aujourd’hui certaines sont disponibles, à la vente cette fois, sur le site officiel (*).

La démarche de l’artiste est multiple : la contamination de l’espace visuel et public, la rencontre entre le pixel et la mosaïque, et la transposition d’un jeu vidéo dans la réalité.

This catalog has been released for the Space Invader solo show “Low Fidelity” at Lazarides gallery in London.
It features the exhibited works and some pictures of the last space invaders put in the streets of London.
