Brickset has a very interesting article posted via Legobloggen.

“In June 2010, Lego will launch a new collectors series with only minifigs. The figures will be of various types, but is reportedly not being those from current themes. They could be anything from cowboys to ninjas or adventurers, etc. The first wave will appear in stores in June, reportedly contain 16 different characters. These will then be replaced by 16 other figures in August.

“Figures will be sold in opaque polybags, so it is chance that determines which figure you get. This is the same approach as in the example trading cards. The bag with the figure will cost 25 SEK. May seem much given to impulse setter costs only £ 5 more and then there is also the accessories. But I suspect that the high price is because the characters will be unique to this collector series and that they will only be produced in two months (at least the first wave).” (thanks et314 for the news and translation)

On Brickjournal.com we get an even better view of some of the figures.

If this is true it is possibly the coolest thing coming out next year!

Think collectible cards meets LEGO. I’m rather excited by the concept. Although to be fair Playmobile has been doing that sort of thing for years.

The only difference is the “unknown” factor. But from the look of the figures available even if you do get multiples it would be okay because these are all pretty neat looking and I can see lots of uses for the figures and their respective parts.

No word on if these will be available in the States. In fact there is very little info on these at all. As soon as I know anything I’ll let you know.

Queridos!

“It started with a low light, Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed; And then they took

“It started with a low light,
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed;
And then they took my blood type,
they left a strange impression in my head.”

Love for me started slowly. In fact, my first crush was hardly anything compared to what I have now. >_>;; Then, I entered middle school, and BAM–! That was huge. *is slapped for sounding perverted* From that point on, all my crushes were pretty much huge and overwhelming.

“You know that I was hoping,
That I could leave this star-crossed world behind;
But when they cut me open,
I guess I changed my mind.”

This actually refers to my high school entrance, or whatever you call it. I was hoping I could leave stupid middle school guys and meaningless love behind. I wanted a boyfriend who I could trust and who made me feel good about myself. I met this guy at band camp, fell pretty hard for him, and a few weeks later, I realized he was a player. Which is really ironic because he’s extremely geeky. Oxymoronic. Anyway, I stopped wanting to fall for people when he pretty much tore my heart in half.

“And you know I might
Have just flown too far from the floor this time,
’cause they calling me by my name!
And the zipping white light beams
disregarding bombs and satellites!”

Aha, back to the present. I think I might have just put too much of myself into an unattainable guy. He’s way too familiar to me. And I’m kind of lost.

“That was the turning point;
That was one lonely night!”

How did I realize this, you ask? Well… I saw him with his best girl SPACE friend, and I got really angry and sad. And I knew I couldn’t feel heartbroken about a guy I’d never even be able to hug.

“The star maker says, “It ain’t so bad”
The dream maker’s gonna make you mad
The spaceman says, “Everybody look down!
Its all in your mind!”

The starmaker, in other words, the popular guy, is going to trick you into thinking things are fine. The dreammaker, the one you feel passionately about (for lack of a better explanation), is just going to enrage you when you see him with another girl. And the spaceman, your friend, is going to tell you you’re just imagining everything.

“Well now I’m back at home and-
I’m looking forward to this life I live;
You know it’s gonna haunt me,
So hesitation to this life I give.”

When I get back home, I feel sane. I can give up the player, or the heartbreaker. Easy, right? Wrong. Once I wake up in the morning, I’ve lost all logic. And every time I give a guy up, my day loses some of its zing. I go to class and go home. And there’s no one giving me such a rush. School isn’t as exciting.

“You think you might cross over,
You caught between the devil and the deep blue sea;
You better look it over,
Before you make that leap!”

Sure, you say, I can get rid of guys forever. Who needs them, right? Psh!

Wrong.

You think you can give them up forever, but then someone else sneaks into your head. You’re caught, then, between falling for them, and having a boring day. But you’d better think carefully before you jump into anything.

“And you know I’m fine, but I hear those voices at night
sometimes… they justify my claim,
and the public don’t dwell on my transmission
’cause it wasn’t televised…”

I’m fine with guys. Usually. But occasionally, I’ll get some doubt. Or pain. And I’ll wonder if it’s all worth it. Maybe. But then I just wake up again, and we all know where that gets me.

Full disclosure: I live in New York City.

Some of you had probably already gleaned that from previous blog posts (like the one with a fuzzy camera phone photo of Jay-Z, taken near a subway stop that I frequently use), and some of you know from our interactions on Twitter or email. The fact that I live approximately 2,600 miles away from the 206 puts me at a major disadvantage when it comes to getting a proper and accurate feel for all of this recent Town movement. I miss all of the shows. I never get to interact with any of the artists in person. I have a hard time copping the latest releases — sometimes I practically have to beg rappers to send me their new sh*t. (Which reminds me: I owe a huge THANK YOU to all of those folks who’ve provided me with music. You will never know how much I appreciate it. And by the way, keep it coming please!)

On the other hand, living in NY does give me an interesting perspective when it comes to how Seattle’s hip-hop community compares to other cities. For example, not surprisingly the hip-hop scene in New York is incredibly vast and wide. You can’t even begin to absorb all of it, especially if your desire is to actually feel it. (Okay, I’m speaking for myself. I’m a true fan of the music, but I’m like most normal folks, my nine-to-five is not associated with hip-hop and the time I spend listening to music is in constant competition with the time I want to spend reading a book, or going to the movies, or a museum, or doing one of the millions of things there are to do in this city.) A hip-hop head in New York really has to pick and choose what specific artists and styles to pay attention to. It’s intimidating and, to be honest, I’ve mostly ignored it. I’m too busy with Seattle sh*t. There’s enough going on in our humble little town to satisfy the most carnivorous of listeners. Plus it keeps me connected to the city where my heart truly lies.

The irony of all this is that when I’m out visiting family and friends in the Northwest — as I was last week — those are the moments when I’m paying the least amount of attention to hip-hop. Time is so scarce during those short visits. Aside from having it on constant rotation on my iPod (as is the case no matter where my feet touch the ground), I didn’t have time to catch any shows and, as you probably noticed, didn’t write even a single post during the seven days I was in town. It’s kinda messed up, really. And so, I think the universe was trying to tell me something when it just so happened that, on Tuesday, I ended up on the same airporter shuttle bus from the Anacortes ferry terminal to Seatac, with none other than the homie Vitamin D who, like me, was also heading back to The Six after a weekend in the San Juan Islands. (Vita: I shoulda hollered at you, dude! Next time, I promise!) Now this may sound particularly corny, but it meant a lot to me for two reasons: (1) Vita is one of the true OGs of Seattle hip-hop. He’s been a trendsetter, a waymaker, and any other appropriately hyperbolic adjective one can find to describe his influence on rap and r&b in the 206. He deserves the props and anyone who knows anything about Town music would agree. Which is why (2) I found it particularly dope that he had been spending time in the San Juans, the place where I grew up, came of age, and, through interesting twists of musical fate, came to love hip-hop music. (See, I told you I was gonna get corny! Whatever, I could give a f*ck what you think, ha!)

Running into Vita in a seemingly totally random place like that brought me back around to what I think is the greatest thing about the current movement in Seattle. It’s so small. Tight-knit. Intimate, even. A real community. I’ve said before that Seattle is a great place to be a rapper these days because it’s one of the least-marginalized hip-hop communities in the country. From the constant collaborations, diversity of acts at the shows, to the online Twitter chatter (it’s like a virtual fraternity house). I’m sure that beef exists (Geo: “In a town not big enough for egos to breathe…Twisted, crab-in-a-barrel existence…”), but for the most part, it seems to be all L.O.V.E.

New York is the birthplace and eternal capital city of hip-hop. Have you ever paid attention to the little monologue Spaceman gives on the joint with J. Pinder (“SXSW/CMJ”) where he talks about how overwhelming it was to be an up-and-coming rapper from the 206, standing in the famous club, SOB’s, during CMJ? That’s how culturally ingrained hip-hop is in New York. It’s one of the city’s many touchstones. An institution. A feeling, even. There’s no other city where you can go see The Roots perform every f*cking Tuesday night! Or go to a random free screening of an independently-produced hip-hop documentary at Columbia University and end up standing at a urinal next to Talib Kweli (that sh*t happened to me!). I saw motherf*cking Jay-Z shooting a clip for “Empire State of Mind,” guerrilla-style, on my way to the subway! Through pure chance, I even ended up working at a non-profit organization that helped landmark 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the South Bronx as “The Birthplace of Hip-Hop” (see here and here). Hip-hop is the musical heartbeat of daily life in NY, and from a cultural standpoint, it will never be matched. But Seattle, man. DAMN. Our movement is young. Fresh. As optimistic as a box of baby rabbits. We still don’t know how high these artists will fly. Keep doin’ your thing. I’m looking forward to the day I come back and get to participate on an even deeper level.

I was listening to the Dave Matthews Band’s new album “Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux Kin

I was listening to the Dave Matthews Band’s new album “Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King” recently and noticed that one of the songs is called “Spaceman.” Hey, that’s the title of a song on The Killers’ “Day & Age,” I thought.

As these sorts of things are wont to do, pretty soon this observation led to the idea of imagining a space-themed album. I started jotting down the space-themed songs I was aware of, coming up with seven.

I talked to my brother a few minutes ago. He hosts a radio show on a college radio station and tends to like to theme his shows. I asked him if he knew any space-themed songs and got him hooked on finding songs for me. He rattled off a bunch, including many I hadn’t heard of, and one that should have been totally obvious to me.

He suggested I do some research on allmusic.com, which I did, plus I googled “songs about space.” Turns out there’s been quite a bit of work done on listing space-themed songs. An especially good list is at HobbySpace.com.

Here’s my list for an album I’d call “Out of This World”:

1. “Space Oddity” by David Bowie

2. “Major Tom (Coming Home)” by Peter Schilling

3. “Spaceman” by The Killers

4. “Spaceman” by Dave Matthews Band (the Spaceman only gets a mention)

5. “Satellite” by Dave Matthews Band

6. “Astronaut Dreams” by Peter Mayer

7. “Camping by the Sun” by Peter Mayer

8. “One More Circle” by Peter Mayer

9. “Planet Earth” by Duran Duran (This is the song that should have been obvious to me ’cause I was a Duranie in my youth.)

10. “Rocket Man” by Elton John

11. “Interplanet Janet” by Lynn Ahrens (Schoolhouse Rock rocks!)

12. “Rapture” by Blondie

Got any favorite space-themed songs you’d add to this album? (It could be a multiple disc set, you know.)

Whilst I definately feel like I am improving I still see a huge gap in my capabilities compared to the proficient users of these programs – I guess with time it will work out.

Below is a something I thought of which I thought was kind of a funny idea, I don’t think it really works as a shirt but we will see – either way I feel pretty happy with the progress I am making. It’s not finished yet as I want to put in a starry background and fix some things like his hand so if anyone has any ideas or other criticism etc let me know.

I found it really hard to project the expression of the surprise seeing as you can’t see his face.

Over at Gizmodo, Wilson Rothman has a fascinating article on a new book of photography, highlighting the creative process of Norman Rockwell, edited and compiled by Ron Schtick. Rothman was a sublime artist with the uncanny ability to reimagine countless images with his kitsch signature style

Wilson calls Rockwell “the original king of Photoshop,” despite the fact that Rockwell’s Saturday Evening Post covers were being gawped at long before Adobe (or indeed any image software) had been conceived. Heres a little snippet,

The book is not about painting. Rockwell’s oil-on-canvas work feels like an afterthought for Schick, who mostly documents Rockwell’s photography and art direction. Throughout the book, you see a painting, then you see the photographs he took to make that painting. In most cases, many shots comprise the different elements, and are joined together only in paint. It’s almost sad: Vivid interactions between people, remembered jointly in the country’s collective consciousness, may never have taken place. Even people facing each other at point blank range were photographed separately, and might never have even met.

Here’s the link for the book, other suppliers are available.

Lost Transmission by the Spaceman

There are killers who sleep peacefully among us, unaware of the pain they will one day inflict upon another. I am not so lucky. I have a timer counting down to the moment I will destroy all existence in this world. In its last moment, I think about the darkness before my time. I ask myself, “was my life truly a conception or a consequence of mankind?”

I looked upon this tiny round world and considered the hideous life forms that inhabited it. I used to live among them, but now I just looked. Little do they suspect that the one they sent out to explore the universe around them would turn around to explore them.

She would never believe me if I said that the mysterious creatures on Planet X abducted my spacecraft, turning it into a weapon of mass destruction, and myself into a robotic spaceman without the capability of rational thought. And that I only escaped because they thought I was some sort of messenger from God when they saw what I’d stolen from a playground when I was a little child.

When I was a young, my desires came in the form of peace and unity, but now in the form of something else, or someone else rather. She couldn’t possibly still love me if she knew of my transformation. How can you love a robotic spaceman without the capability of rational thought? It didn’t matter now. There was only one thing left for me to do.

Saturday at Austin City Limits the rain came down and drenched Zilker Park. Festival goers went undeterred as the puddles turned into seas of mud. The first band I saw was Mute Math, who played a mean version of
”Spotlight.” MUTE MATH mashes electronica and hard rock. These New Orleans musicians are excellent entertainers putting on quite the show. Lead singer and keyboardist Paul Meany literally did flips while playing his keys. Also MUTE MATH has a wonderful collection of interesting instruments from space-age synthesizers to wild effects pedal boards. Following Mute Math, I caught part of Canadian singer-songwriter Sam Roberts’s set under the tent. I heard someone describe Sam Roberts as the Canadian Bruce Springsteen and certainly the comparison seemed apt.

The rain really started to fall as Citizen Cope took the main stage. Despite the rain Citizen Cope served up some spectacular music. His laid back flip-flop rock lightened the mood with “Back Together“
 and
 ”107°.” And a mean version of the protest song “Bullet And A Target” brought energy to the wet crowd.
 Clarence Greenwood aka Citizen Cope capped the set with the ballad ”Sideways.”

Next Jamaican reggae superstar Eek-A-Mouse filled the Wildflower tent with reggae lovers and good vibes. This unique singjay performed his smash hit ”Ganja Smuggling” to a most appreciative audience. Interesting enough the Mouse also performed a cover of Dolly Parton’s classic country song
 “Jolene.” It was amazing. The Mouse soaked up the Texas outlaw sound dropping gun-slinging rhymes and rawhide whips.
 Eek-A-Mouse is quite the entertainer demanding crowd participation and ensuring sweet reggae grooves. With the crowd shouting “Irie” the Mouse dropped the reggae classic ”Wa-Do-Dem” and closed with ”Sensi Party.”

The Brooklyn rapper also covered one of Bobby Brown’s love songs “Roni.” The smooth voice and bass heavy beats of this young rhyme sayer leaves fans bobbing their heads.

In fact, I consider Devotchka to be the nicest surprise at the festival this year. I knew certain bands would kick ass. But I wasn’t even planning on seeing Devotchka until some of my friends talked me into seeing them. The Denver-based band of gypsies rocked and rollicked. One amazing performing burlesque artist glided above stage on a giant red curtain. Devotchka includes multi-instrumentalists Nick Urata (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Tom Hagerman (violin, accordion), Jeanie Schroder (sousaphone, bass), and percussionist Shawn King. I highly recommend seeing this band. You will not be let down. Their music is beautiful and fun. One of my friends said she liked to listen to this band when she cleaned. I can see why. It doesn’t matter if your are cleaning or standing in the mud Devotchka deserves a listen.
