Apart from being the greatest title ever conceived by man, The Men Who Stare at Goats also has an ensemble of genuine Hollywood talent which should see it opening strong at the box office next week. The Coenesque film is an adaptation of Jon Ronson’s book covering ‘the apparent madness at the heart of U.S. military intelligence’ and merges quick-wit satire with military operandi. This is the liberal movie of the year with a post-modern stamp of ironic approval.

Kas gasdina tai antras filmas iš eilės apie šios profesijos žmogų (The Wackness), kuriame psichologas rūko žolytę ir gan artimai bendrauja su žolytės prekeiviu.

Kas gan stipriai padeda filmui nebūti tokiu jau blogu, tai Kevin Spacey. Jau ne pirmas filmas ir ne pirmas vaidmuo, kuriame Spacey labai gerai atrodo ( American Beauty, K-pax ), bet šiaip pagalvojau, kad vaidmenys gan panašus. Tai pasimetęs turintis psichologinių problemų vyras, tai vyras apsimetantis, kad jis ateivis vien tam, kad neatsiminti praeities, o štai dabar ir psichologas pats turintis daugiau problemų nei jo klientai. Tai va čia turbūt vienintelis geras dalykas iš šito filmo.

O šiaip tai gan banalus filmiukštis nors ir gan lengvai susižiūrėjo, bet laukiau daugiau, kad kas nors pasikeis atsiras netikėtas posūkis. Įdomus personažai ganėtinai ir tokios pusiau nesusijusios jų istorijos ir atrodo tikrai buvo galima kažką daugiau iš viso šito išspaust, bet deja.

Plot:

In the midst of an elaborate conspiracy, an expert negotiator is driven to the edge when he’s framed for the murder of his partner, as well as embezzling money from his department’s pension fund. His only chance to prove his innocence is to take hostages himself, acquire the services of another expert negotiator, and find out who’s running the conspiracy before it’s too late.

Review:

Great movie, saw it yesterday for the 4th or 5th time, and it just gets better. First up, the casting. I personally am a fan of Kevin Spacey, so always glad to have him in the picture. Kevin is best in a role of expertise. In a movie where his character knows how to achieve what has to be achieved, and this is such a role. He plays Chris Sabian, who has to talk down his fellow negotiator Danny Roman, played by Samuel L. Jackson. There was nobody who could have played that part better than him, I think. A great actor in a great role, makes it seem as natural as possible.

The film is full of quotes and contains humor aside of the drama. I think this is an important aspect in making a film bearable. Only drama would not have been good enough. It’s not a lot, just enough to make the film that much better.

The great thing about the website is that it offers several links per film, and that films that are still in theaters are also often on it. The quality then is less because it is filmed in a cinema, but the site does give you the opportunity to watch them. Often for my reviews, where I placed a free to watch link, this is my source.

I will still offer you more per film with my reviews, but that website might still be of good use to you. I hope it is.

Good day, everyone. Recently, I took one of my older designs and did something new with it. I took the StingRays and decided to place them in a circular arrangement. Here’s a few pics to show you what I mean. Hope you like it!

I would like to begin this post with these simple words: Bravo Sam Rockwell. Rockwell turned in one of his best performances to date in Moon, the best independent Sci-Fi in quite some time.

Rockwell plays the likeable Sam Bell, an astronaut contracted for 3 years to mine Helium 3, a powerful energy source found on the moon’s surface. Alone on the face of the man in the moon, Bell has only recorded video messages and the helpful A.I. machine, Gerty, voiced by Kevin Spacey, to keep him company.

All’s going well as Sam enters the final two weeks of his long contract, until he begins seeing things that aren’t there. During one such hallucination, Sam accidentally crashes the lunar rover he’s operating and incapacitates himself outside the base.

When he wakes up inside the base in the infirmary, Sam has no memory of the crash. Gerty assures him that he suffered some brain damage, which accounts for the memory loss. After discovering that one of the harvesters had stalled, Sam expresses his interest in doing his job and fixing it, only to find that Gerty has blocked his exit from the base. Somehow, that doesn’t sit well with Sam, and his curiosity gets the best of him, leading him eventually to the crash site where he finds someone else injured inside the rover. Somone that looks and sounds just like him.

With an intriguing storyline that poses questions on scientific ethics, corporate responsibility, sacrifice, and the human condition, Moon provides an interesting and rewarding experience. I would definitely recommend seeing this one on the big screen, as the cinematography and art direction is gorgeous. You couldn’t get closer to seeing the moon if you were Neil Armstrong.

One thing to watch for is the subtle use of biblical referrences throughout the film: listen for a certain group of four gentlemen whose names may be familiar.

When your entire cast fits in one, static screen-shot during the credits, you have to rely on some serious performances from your principal actors. Sam Rockwell does an amazing job at bringing two distinct, individual characters in Sam Bell- one you don’t want to miss.

Center for Responsive Politics Releases Preliminary Analysis of Second Quarter Lobbying Figures
Lobbyists were paid at least $349.2 million for their services between April and June, according to a partial analysis of their quarterly reports filed with the Senate Office of Public Records on Monday.
Although this overall expenditure appears to be a decrease from the first quarter, when lobbyists brought in $807.3 million, the Center for Responsive Politics expects to receive and process at least 7,700 more filings in the next week.

So while the $349.2 million will likely increase, we’re not sure yet by how much. But we will report on any increase next week.

Last year, lobbying expenditures increased 3.4 percent between the first and second quarters, from $798.1 million to $825.3 million.

If that trend holds true this year, too, clients would have paid out about $834.7 million between April and June. In the past six months lobbyists have been busy with a number of major legislative initiatives, including health care reform, financial regulation and climate change.

In all, 19,251 lobbying contracts were active for this year’s first quarter. To date, CRP has processed 11,482 contracts for the second quarter, although this number is also expected to increase significantly in coming days.

Next week, when we have more of the reports in, we’ll provide an update on these numbers. We’ll also be adding the new numbers to our lobbying database and blogging about industries and interests as we code and calculate that data. source

GOLDEN! SPREAD

This is Congressman Alan Grayson questioning Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on $550B of loans to foreigners (or ‘central liquidity swaps’ in Federal Reserve-ese’).

Which financial institutions received this money? Bernanke’s answer: I don’t know.

As the Fed was lending this money, the dollar increased by 30% in value. Grayson asks, was this a coincidence? Bernanke’s answer: yes.

Bernanke Fights Audit Threat To The Fed

Central bank chief argues more review would compromise independence, seeking to deny legislative victory for one of Fed’s biggest opponents.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke faced a grilling in Congress on Tuesday about the role of the Fed, and spoke out strongly against a legislative proposal to audit the central bank.

Speaking to the House Financial Services Committee, Bernanke tempered optimism that the economy is improving, noting that, “despite these positive signs, the rate of job loss remains high and the unemployment rate has continued its steep rise.” He added the Fed expects inflation to remain subdued over the next two years.

He discussed the Federal Reserve’s strategy to extricate itself from the outsized role it’s taken in the economy to avert financial disaster. He reminded Congress about the need to get the budget deficit fixed: If not, “we risk having neither financial stability nor durable economic growth,” he said.

Bernanke also came out in strong opposition to legislation proposed by Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, to audit the Federal Reserve.

Since its introduction in February, the bill has attracted 275 co-sponsors, enough to gain passage in the House of Representatives. In the Senate, the prospects are unclear. Fourteen Republicans, three Democrats and one Independent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who votes with Democrats, have signed on to the bill. The legislation simply calls for a Government Accountability Office audit of the Federal Reserve.

RE: Spacey On Letterman
Twitter is a way to advertise or network – what the folks at twitter need to offer is an options that allows users to easily bulk accept or reject people who want to follow – blocking is too much work and only encourages spam; which is what wastes most of the bandwidth. Spammers will still try, but it would be a deterrent.

Kevin Spacey may have 800k followers, but how many of those followers are SPAMMERS!?

My guess, at least one-third.

They don’t count.

Further, anyone who has a high number of followers are using twitter to advertise or stay relevant with their base, which is okay, but it’s not actually social networking unless you follow back.

I’m thinking of instituting the 30 day rule of relevance: If I follow you, tweet you with at least three pieces of wisdom, help or a laugh and you don’t respond in kind or acknowledge my presence I will un-follow.

I don’t partake, but I’ve heard enough evidence that it works well for people who are suffering from the ill effects of chemo and other detrimental maladies. I  don’t believe that the expressed confidence in this plant by so many random people would say it works just to get a buzz. I’m convinced, therefore this plant should be made legals and controlled by the FDA for distribution and allowed to be grown, within legal limits,  in the garden.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon Donates Serious Cash to Democrats
Dimon and his wife, Judy, have donated more than a half-million dollars to Democratic candidates and committees since 1989, according to a Center for Responsive Politics analysis of his donations. That is nearly 12 times what the couple has given the GOP.
Dimon seems to exert considerable influence within Democratic circles at a time when JPMorgan and other banks still owe the federal government billions of dollars after last year’s bailouts.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was scheduled to attend JPMorgan board meeting this week. He declined to attend after the New York Times profiled Dimon and mentioned the invitation prominently. more

Apple’s Image May Be Tarnished By Poor Factory Conditions
Following an investigation on Tuesday into many Chinese companies violating recent labor laws, it’s now known through Apple’s 2009 responsibility progress report that 45 of the 83 factories that built iPhones and iPods in 2008 weren’t paying valid overtime rates for those workers that qualified, while 23 of these weren’t even paying some of their workers China’s minimum wage.

A deeper look at Apple’s findings found that about 25 of the 83 also discriminated to some degree against people based on ethnicity, biological issues like disabilities, or political leanings. 22 didn’t meet environmental standards, while almost exactly a fifth also had problems with on-site living conditions and safety.

In a few extreme cases, seven factories had been caught having at least at one time hired underage workers, though were weren’t more than 25 people involved. Some workers at six factories also had to enter debt to a recruitment agency just to start work and were effectively forced to work to pay off their recruiters.apple insider

Long anticipated Indie Sci-Fi ‘Moon’, burst onto UK Screens on Friday, July 17th – coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landings. Helmed by Duncan Jones, ‘Moon’ sees protagonist Sam [Sam Rockwell, of Choke & Green Mile fame] battle with an isolated position on a Moon energy farm.

The aesthetic quality of ‘Moon’ is reminiscent of the likes of Alien and Total Recall; whilst conveying a contemporary feeling, I couldn’t help become a little nostalgic with the subtle stylised 1980’s feel to the whole thing.

Jones is Captain of this ship, and it sails eloquently. Without giving too much away, Rockwell’s ‘Sam’ encounters himself and has numerous stand-offs with his ‘double’. Jones cheekily and very subtly denounces the classic and mostly figured cinematographic ‘two-way’ exchanges of past cinema [Nic Cage in Adaptation, Mike Myers in the Austin Powers Franchise & not to mention numerous Python escapades], giving two fingers to audience expectations of the traditional split-screen method.

In my favorite scene, wherein Rockwell plays ping-pong with himself – Jones teases us, with an almost symmetrical shot in which, it’s going to seem very easy to pop a little CGI ping-pong ball in there – but no. The exchanges between Rockwell & Rockwell are very impressive. At one point, Rockwell stands smack in the middle of the shot, defying the rules and putting a smile on my face, at least. Watch out for a wayward ping-pong bat too!

I had thought Kevin Spacey’s Robot ‘GERTY’, who is brilliantly reminiscent of Hal 9000 [Kubrick], to speak a little too ‘fluidly’ at times. However, upon consideration of this – the technology and Artificial Intelligence is being outlined by Spacey’s vocal portrayal. The Robot’s warmth and obvious compassion towards Sam, albeit sometimes questionable in terms of the underlying motives, clearly portrays that this is a technology of vast superiority.

Clint Mansell, scorer to many greats including one of my all-time favorites ‘Requiem for a Dream’, along with ‘The Hole’ and more recently ‘The Wrestler’. The score is fantastic and just beautifully compliments Jones’ visuals. Shot on a tight budget, and within a London Studio in the rough space of One Month – Duncan Jones has not only established himself as a Film Director – but a great and reputable one at that.

‘Moon’ is visually, a treat. The story, dynamic and wonderfully sombre. The music, perfect. The talent, unsurpassable. ‘Moon’ is Rockwell’s isolated mindfuck, and shows a very harrowing, yet endearing emotional journey.

I’m not going to patronise anyone by awarding this film a classification, mark etc. I’m just going to tell you to go see ‘Moon’, at any given opportunity. It’s a beautiful vision, complimented greatly by all of the hands on board.

I greatly look forward to Duncan Jones’ very prospective career in film. An absolute visionary, and gentleman.

Mein alter Schwede ! Da staunste Bauklötzer !

Gucke ich doch letztens meinen Freundschaftsanfragen-Ordner bei MySpace durch (meist mit Verdruss, welche Tittenmaus mir schon wieder auf die Nerven gehen will oder aber Gabber Dj’s, die ganz viel Wert auf meine Meinung legen O.o ) und finde eine Band namens “Rigna Folk” darunter. Ich weiß jetzt auf die Schnelle gar nicht mehr, was sie geschrieben hatten, aber bestimmt sowas wie “deutscher Indierock, hör mal rein” oder “Indie, ne !?” Da ich auch bei MySpace ein sehr toleranter Mensch bin, hab ich mir also auch diese Anfrage vorgenommen, die Profilseite geöffnet und mit Erschrecken festgestellt, dass die Typen irgendwie aussehen wie Silbermond, das Markenzeichen von A Perfect Circle auf billigste Art und Weise mit einem ollen Bleistift reingemalt haben und dann auch noch von mir gehört werden wollen. Trotz anfänglich negativer Grundstimmung wurde ich dennoch ins Abyssal gesogen und bis dato auch nicht so recht freigelassen!

Was die Herren (und seit neuestem auch eine schnuckelige Dame an den Tasten) aus Ulm da zaubern, ist wirklich Musik auf sehr hohem Niveau.

Der Opener “Sade” plätschert sich langsam in ein gewabertes Synthieabenteuer, was sich letztlich in echobeladenen Gitarren versenkt und durch ein sehr präzises triphop lastiges Schlagzeug begleitet wird. Synthies………und weiter. Irgendwie verregneter Tag in einer großen Stadt, gute Laune, ordentlich Adrenalin im Kreislauf und auch irgendwas zu tun. So klingt der Regen-Spätnachmittag-Beat deutscher Großstädte. Im Hintergrund immer wieder wage Stadtgeräusche…eine Bahn? .. Ich sitze drin.

“The Modernist” pumpt abrupt los, wie ein ungeduldiger Industrialschüler Trent Reznor’s und entblößt seine Nervösität in Indie-Gitarren  und zeigt uns nun endlich das ganze Potential dieser Band. Große Melodien, vertrackte Rythmen und eine Stimme, die zwischen Radiohead und Placebo seinen eigenen Platz besetzt.

“Mercury Falls” versucht so eine Art Aussöhnung mit der Popmusik der 90er Jahre, so  scheint es mir fast, einzuleiten und dann irgendwie Depeche Mode lastig in “Adorable Addiction” zu gleiten. Klangteppiche à la God Is An Astronaut, bildhafte Musik; und doch gleitet wohl auch der ungeschulte Hörer heimlich hinweg in seine eigenen Traumwelten. Bei “Irony” darf er sich dann auch satte 5 Minuten in eben jenen ausleben. Ein Interlude; Streicheleinheiten für Kopf und Seele!

Pumpender punkesker Bass rüttelt alle Mitreisende wieder wach und Sänger Viktor stellt klar: ” I’m not here, I am somewhere.”

“Thin Ice” macht einen weiteren Ausflug in andere Gefilde. Bevorzugt Island wird hier angesteuert. Am Vergleich mit Sigur Ros komme ich hier nicht vorbei. Doch irgendwie auch egal. Passt.

Auch wenn ich manchmal kein Land mehr gesehen habe, so ist doch irgendwie alles klar, wenn der Hidden Song nach “Jupiter Rain” ein melancholisches Drum n Bass Stück in weite Sphären vorfliegt und mich komplett überwältigt zurück lässt.

Vielleicht nicht die beste Platte 2008, aber doch sehr innovativ, riskant und ganz tief in meinem Herzen!

We all alt-tab. Or rather, many of us do. Whether it’s during raid explanations or even boss fights, many of us are guilty of leaving the game to look at something else, for whatever reason. Most classes can get away with it–except for healers. Because it’s very obvious when the tank dies.

I  was in normal CoS tonight on Prialeson, healing, and was VERY bored. So I alt-tabbed for just a few seconds. Then I alt-tabbed back. Tank at 78%. Ok, fine, I’ll toss a Holy Shock. Wait, how are you at 55%? Flash of Light. Flash of LIGHT! I said FLASH OF LIGHT! ZOMFG HOLY LIGHT! *tank dies* The tank goes “No heals?” and I go “I kept pressing the button but nothing happened!”

>.> What seems to have happened was that I alt-tabbed back, but smart Vista didn’t set me inside the screen (I play windowed) and so my commands seem to not have registered…luckily the mob had 8% health left, and evasion tanking by rogues still works, so I just rezzed him before the boss, and paid extra close attention to him during the boss fight. I’ll be damned if I let him go down below 80%. I don’t want a bad rep. People talk about you in trade. And by “you” I mean right now mostly Cefka, Pernod, and Scrye, but I didn’t feel like getting added to that list.

Careful when you alt-tab, you just might die.

David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones (formerly Zowie Bowie), has directed a new sci-fi flick called Moon starring Sam Rockwell as an astronaut who is assigned to extract fuel for Earth, there’s something about Kevin Spacey as a talking computer and what not. And apparently it’s produced by Sting’s wife, anyway here’s the trailer.
