The Span family of California, whose 7 month-old-son, Zachary, has SMA Type 1, have created a truly unique  and exciting fundraiser — and it sounds fantastic! Here is what Dave says about it:

I am a professional skydiver and my wife skydives as well (though just for fun). We will be holding a Raffle and Silent Auction on Saturday, Nov. 28th at Perris Valley Skydiving in Perris, California. The dropzone has graciously donated a tandem and through my contacts in the industry, we have accumulated a substantial list of prizes.  The total value of these prizes is in excess of $6500!

We will also be having a Bake Sale that day, Dinner that night at Bombshelter Restaurant (on the DZ), and Bingo and Texas Hold-Em Tournament that night as well.  Should be a good time.  You don’t have to be a jumper to enjoy the evening, so we would love to see anyone that wants to come out. People will want to come out during the day as well as there will be jumping all day (weather permitting) and it is the DZ annual 4-way team building weekend.

E’ una domanda che ognuno di noi si è posto almeno una volta nella vita, invidiando la vista a raggi x di Superman.

Joey Wilson, ricercatore presso la University of Utah, e il suo faculty advisor Neil Patwari, entrambi in attività presso lo SPAN laboratory della principale università di Salt Lake City, hanno provato a dare una risposta grazie all’immagine tomografica radio (RTI) basata sulla varianza, e i risultati dei loro studi dovrebbero presto essere pubblicati anche sull’IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.

Ricordando che la forza di un segnale in ciascun punto di una rete è data dalla somma dei contributi di tutti i cammini che le onde radio possono percorrere per arrivare al ricevitore, l’idea alla base della tecnica proposta dai due ricercatori è che ogni variazione nel volume di spazio attraverso cui i segnali si propagano, come quella che può essere causata dal movimento di una persona, provoca una variazione della forza stessa del segnale nel punto di osservazione. Perciò, interrogando il volume in esame attraverso più segnali, raccolti da più ricevitori, è possibile ricostruire un’immagine del movimento al suo interno.

A differenza di quanto succede nelle applicazioni RADAR, in cui la posizione e la velocità di spostamento di un oggetto sono rilevate grazie all’eco di ritorno dei segnali radio che vi “urtano” contro, l’immagine tomografica radio misura le “ombre” nelle onde radio che si creano quando esse passano attraverso un corpo, e in questo senso è affine alle omonime tomografia assiale computerizzata e tomografia sismica.

Un vantaggio non da poco rispetto a sistemi di immaging ottici o a infrarossi è dato dall’utilizzo di segnali a radio frequenza, in grado di passare attraverso ostacoli, come muri, alberi e fumo.
Inoltre l’immagine tomografica radio non solo può sopperire alle basse prestazioni dei sistemi video in condizioni di scarsa illuminazione ma li può sostituire laddove non sono implementabili per motivi di privacy, visto che l’RTI consente solo di individuare la posizione di una persona, non di identificarla.

Wilson e Patwari hanno testato la loro tecnica attraverso una LR-WPAN (Low Rate – Wireless Personal Area Network, standard IEEE 802.15.4) a 34 nodi al di fuori di un soggiorno tipo, ottenendo risultati attendibili nel raggio di un metro circa.
Questo evidenzia gli attuali limiti di copertura, ma rassicura anche sull’eventuale rischio da bombardamento di onde radio per la salute, in quanto la potenza dei segnali utilizzati è di circa 500 volte inferiore a quella di un cellulare tipo.

I shouldn’t neglect to mention that Adam and several of the Queen band members (oxford graduates) will be with us in Spain.

Sarah Palin is once again weighing in on the health reform debate, this time echoing the insurance industry's argument that the individual mandate contained in the Senate Finance bill will prove unworkable as young and healthy Americans conclude that they are better off paying a small fine than purchasing costly insurance.

“Even factoring in government subsidies, the cost of purchasing a plan is much more than $750,” Palin writes in her latest Facebook message. “The result: many people, especially the young and healthy, will simply not buy coverage, choosing to pay the fine instead.

“They'll wait until they're sick to buy health insurance,” she adds, “confident in the knowledge that insurance companies can't deny them coverage, such a scenario is a perfect storm for increasing the cost of health care and creating an unsustainable mandate program.”

The former Republican vice presidential candidate, whose book, “Going Rogue,” is set to be released on Nov. 17, is keeping people guessing about her political future. Some top Republicans expect her to become a candidate for president in 2012. Others, including some top Republicans with ties to her, think that she wants to be influential on issues of concern to her without undergoing the rigor of a White House run.

Palin's critique of the weakened individual mandate echoes concerns about the Finance bill that were raised last week by America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the lobbying arm of the health insurance industry.

After spending months at the table with the Obama administration and Democratic lawmakers pushing for a strong individual mandate, AHIP turned against the Senate Finance bill last week just two days before the measure came to a vote. AHIP's campaign against the Finance bill has thus far included a widely criticized report by PriceWaterhouseCoopers warning about higher premium costs and a television ad blitz warning seniors about proposed cuts to Medicare Advantage.

Even though the Finance Committee approved an amendment reducing the individual mandate penalty, the Congressional Budget Office did not change its estimate that the percentage of legal nonelderly U.S. residents with insurance coverage would rise from the current 83 percent to 94 percent over the next decade.

In addition to targeting the “unsustainable” individual mandate penalty, Palin uses her Facebook post to try to drive a wedge between President Obama and some traditional Democratic allies by criticizing the Finance bill for proposing to tax the “so-called 'Cadillac' health care plans enjoyed by many union members.” The union-funded Health Care for America for Now group launched an ad on Thursday blasting the proposed tax on high-cost insurance plans.

When it comes to the process being used to develop health-care policy, Palin criticizes Obama for not sticking by his sweeping campaign promise to broadcast health-care negotiations on C-SPAN.

Obama brought cameras into the White House at the beginning of the reform effort for a made-for-TV event, but the most consequential negotiations have taken place behind closed doors as they have in previous administrations.

Palin is also pushing Obama to live by a promise on his campaign web site not to sign “any nonemergency bill” without giving the American public “an opportunity to review and comment on the White House web site for five days.”

She concludes her post by reiterating her free-market prescription for health reform.

Palin does not support an individual mandate requiring all Americans to purchase health insurance. Instead, she favors (1) allowing individuals to purchase slimmed down, mandate-free health insurance policies across state lines; (2) giving individuals who purchase their own health care the same tax benefits as those who receive coverage from their employer; and (3) converting Medicare from an open-ended entitlement into a voucher system that provides seniors with a fixed sum of money to purchase private health insurance.

Market share is the ratio of the competitor’s annual sales to the total annual sales of competitive products in the market being served by the competitors. It is usually measured by dividing the  competitor’s sales in dollars by the total sales volume in dollars for the industry. Dollars are used in the calculation because monetary value is usually easy to obtain.

As may be seen from the dimensions describing the horizontal axis of the economic experience curve. It would make more sense to measure the market share in units sold during the year. Dollar volume does not double when volume in units shipped doubles if price decreases with experience.

The dimensions of the experience curve are fully allocated unit expense in constant dollars and cumulative number of units produced. The reference to doubling sales is measured in units shipped. Because this kind of measure could be counted off on the horizontal axis of the curve, it is possible to relate the growth in shipments to fully allocated expense in constant dollards, a reasonable profit margin, and the resulting dollar volume of sales.

The difficulty in obtaining the information needed to calculate market shares in terms of units shipped is often resolved by trade association data, which reports in both units and dollars. Still the associations may not include every possible competitor among their membership. In almost all cases, however, the non-members are not big enough to be significant. Even without the non-member data, the trade association information is a good approximation to the actual figures.

Given that sufficient data is available, it is not entirely necessary to know a competitor’s exact market share. The information most meaningful to a manager is market share compared to that of the nearest competitor. This gives rise to the concept of a market share ratio.

Market Share of Your Biggest Competitor

The interesting result of defining the ratio this way is that only one competitor has a ratio greater than one. All the others have functional ratios, less than one. For instance, if you the largest market share your biggest competitor will have a smaller share than you, and your ratio will be a number greater than one. If your biggest competitor has a market share larger than yours, your ratio will be less than one.

Because only one competitor has market share ratio greater than unity, the dominant competitor is identified by a number greater than one. Also, the degree of the biggest competitor’s dominance is indicated by the size of the number.

Typically, when a new business concept arises that can be represented by an economic experience curve, several competitors enter the marketplace within a very short span of time. There is an initial market penetratiuon in which market shares are established. Managers have learned how difficult it is to change the market share of the competitors once they have been established. Market shares among suppliers who are competing forcefully tend to remain reasonably constant. Cummulative experience relative to other competitors tends to be aligned with the market share ratios.

This Sunday we had a long 3 hour meeting to finish the mission models. Boy, was I impressed when they were done! We finished everything except the bridge, it’s length was longer than one of the kids arm span! After that we unrolled the mat. The only thing they were interested in was smelling it! We decided we had enough building for one day, so we got to work on our research project. We had lots of ideas to discuss. The kids decided to do it on the basis that if in orbit you move an inch in space and then land on Earth, you’ve moved 5 miles! We all thought that was a good idea until some one pointed out that it would take a lot of fuel to get into orbit. That set us to thinking. When the meeting was over we thought of, drumroll… Nothing! That gives us what we have to do at the next meeting.

The post-season officially gets underway tomorrow, but not before Detroit and Minnesota hook up at the Metrodome this afternoon for Game 163 to decide the AL Central. The Twins made a nice little run to reach this point, winning 16 of their final 20 games without Justin Morneau to erase a seven-game September deficit. A bit of a choke show on the part of the Tigers? Minnesota’s Denard Span would have you think so, and I don’t beg to differ.

Of course, the big news surrounding Detroit’s collapse was that of Miguel Cabrera’s dust-up with his wife early Saturday after a night of partying with an unnamed Chicago White Sox player. Cabrera reportedly came home drunk around six AM and woke up his daughter by talking too loud into his cellphone, which his wife took a bit of offense to. Having lived in student houses, I’ve been woken up under these circumstances on several occasions, so I feel her pain. Anyway, she called the cops, Cabrera was taken in and no charges were pressed. He then proceeded to go 0-for-7 in the Tigers’ two biggest games of the season, perhaps while still drunk.

A bit of an interesting sidenote on Cabrera, by the way: Apparently in August he made threats to a man and heckled a fat teenage kid at the same bar he was at Friday night before threatening to murder them. Nice guy, that Miguel Cabrera. Here’s hoping all your playoff dreams come true…
