In Senegal and in most of the West Africa countries I have been to there is a lively obsession with the occult. Even though its not accepted in the muslim religion or christian (in Mali, only like 5% Christian in Senegal), the Senegalese and the Malians seem to fit it in somehow. The Senegalese often wear special jewelry that brings them good luck or health or money or love… they call it “gris gris” (not sure on spelling, pronounced gree-gree). One of the most common sites is a ring they wear which has a small chamber on top filled with a prayer and something. They have bracelets around their wrists and arms with prayers wrapped up in special leathers or animal hides. They have belts of sorts with prayers interwoven everywhere. Most of these special things are made by the Marabous, the religious leaders who wield great influence over the senegalese, their visages stickered and painted on almost every car, bus and scooter in the country and sometimes worn from a lanyard around their necks. They still run the country more or less, but I think a few of them have lost their way as the country has become more wealthy all their contributors have given them a veritable fortune which then in turn diminishes their credibility a little when they roll around in fancy 4×4 (IMO).

The most interesting part about the gris gris, and I have no idea what they call it in Mali as I wasn’t there long enough, are the markets where they sell all the medicinal and occult materials. Here you will find endangered animal hides, dried bats, teeth, dried animal heads and pelts and pieces of everything from lions to hyenas to furry animals which definitely don’t come from the desert climate. There are powders of ground up horns and many inexplicable smells and substances. See below for your viewing pleasure. For myself, I bought a special shell that acts as a guardian, preventing thieves from robbing me and also preventing road accidents, for 2,000 cfa or $4 I figured I could make this strange man’s day, have a nice shell and possibly some protection.

The Senegalese are also very superstitious, the grandfather of a close friend sacrifices no less than 40 animals each year, letting their blood around the 4 corners of Dakar and putting all the animals in the sea, none are eaten. This is a serious fortune in Dakar, we are talking cows, goats and rams.

I also visited a village in the mountains of Burkina today where the locals return every year to do their sacrifice, you are allowed in part of the village but part is reserved. More on that later.
