As the weather turns colder and bikers begin to hibernate for the winter, there are some simple tips

As the weather turns colder and bikers begin to hibernate for the winter, there are some simple tips you can do to keep your bike in good working order so when pull it back out in the spring you don’t have a headache on your hands.

Most importantly, store your bike in somewhat of a climate controlled environment. A garage or basement is perfect. If you never want to ride your bike again, go ahead and leave it by the side of the house and let snow pile up on it.

If you want to try to prevent some cable stretch, set your gears so you are in first gear in the front and the largest number gear in the rear. (7th, 8th, 9th or 10th.) The shift cables are at their least tension in these positions. You can also do the same for the brake cables by releasing the brakes.

It is also a good idea to give the chain one last good lube. This will give the chain a little bit more protection as it sits for a few months. It is also important to remember that your tubes WILL go flat during the winter. This is natural and DOES NOT mean you need new tubes in the spring. Rubber isn’t a completely solid substance and air will leak out over time. But if you are worried about this, put some air in your tires once every week or so to keep them up.

Follow these simple tips and you and your bike will be happy in the spring. Happy Thanksgiving everybody and LiveStrong.

Hola! I am online and settled in. We are staying with friends we met last year, a local Specialize

Hola!

I am online and settled in. We are staying with friends we met last year, a local Specialized sponsored rider and his wife. We’ve got a sweet view of Quito out our window, and it’s a very comfortable place with bikes and gear all over the place. Reminds me of our house at home actually. The Panaderia (fresh bread bakery) is about a 2 minute walk away and the bike shop, Cikla is about 1 minute away. The Parque Metropolitano is about a 2 minute ride away and has tons of kilometers of single track riding, with a bunch of jumps, logs and skill areas to practice on. It’s right on the edge of the city, but nestled in a dense Eucalyptus forest. It’s hard to believe we’re one the edge of a giant city. We slept late yesterday, it’s amazing how trashed a 14 hour travel day can make me feel. The ride yesterday felt really fun, but a bit hard to shake the cobwebs out of my legs, I felt better towards the end than at the beginning. Which is probably due to that travel thing again, sitting for 14 hours doesn’t keep the blood flowing.

We had a personal escort from Daniel, the race director, owner of Cikla bike shop and the Ecuador distributor for Specialized. He’s a busy guy, but sort of like the mayor of all cycling related activities in this country. He is a ripping rider and it was awesome to ride with him on his home trails. Today is an acclimatization day. The town of Quito is at about 2800 meters. For those of you Americans out there, I’m working in kilometers and meters over here! The race takes place between about 3200 and 4200 meters. Last year, the altitude was a killer and Greg got really sick from it. This year, we have a little better plan to get up high this week before the race. You can take bikes up on the Teleferiqo tram just near Quito to the top of Pichincha Volcano at 4100 meters. From there you can get off the tram and ascend even higher to 4600 meters. The best part is that you can ride your bike on single track all the way down the mountain and back to the bottom. We plan to hit the Teleferiqo at least two times this week if possible to get up into the thin air. If that doesn’t work, at least we’ll have enjoyed ourselves on the huge descent!

Wednesday, I am running a women’s only ride in the early morning at the Parque Metropolitano with Amanda, a strong local female racer. There have not been many women’s clinics here, so I am motivated to ride with some of the locals and work on some riding techniques. Here’s the flyer and info about the clinic (in Spanish!) The shop has already been getting a few complaints from some male riders wondering why they cannot come to the riding clinic!

Morning,

Grabbing some internet here at the hotel in Quito after what seemed like a weeklong flight. I highly recommend not flying with bikes, but sometimes duty calls. Greg and I took both the S-Works 29er and my S-Works Era down to the race, but we are also doing some riding clinics at various Specialized dealers. Cuenca is one of the main riding destinations in Ecuador and that is where we will be doing both riding clinics. Then it is off to the Vuelta al Cotopaxi, the largest MTB race in Ecuador. It is a two day stage race, with each day averaging 70km. The hardest part is dealing with the altitude since the course is between 10,000 and 14,000 feet. Needless to say, your power output is a little lower here. At least when I get home I will feel like a champion at 6,000 feet!

I am excited to see some old friends from last year, Daniel from Cikla Bike Shop gave us the best riding tour ever, and we met one of the closest knit cycling communities I have ever seen. I will keep you posted throughout my trip along with some pictures, Ecuador has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Cheers

For generations, most people never sought specialized knowledge after completing school. What they learned about business, managing, selling, or their profession was acquired on an accidental hit-or-miss basis.

Now that’s changed. Today there are seminars, workshops, short courses, and conferences where you can learn the latest techniques and knowledge about anything you need to know. These sources of specialized knowledge have three advantages over conventional education. They are taught by experts, not be people whose only qualification is a degree. Second, the subject matter relates directly to your needs. Irrelevant information is avoided. And third, you’ll acquire as much useful information from other attendees as you do from the instructors. Specialized learning meetings attract only sharp people eager to make more money and enjoy greater success.

To most people the idea of cycling the gruelling yet iconic 874 miles route between Lands End and John O’Groats is a major achievement. While it was exactly that, for me cycling the length of the UK is warm up for a challenge on an altogether bigger scale. My plan in a nutshell is in March 2012 to Cycle Around the World in 100 Days, this means pedalling a minimum of 18,000 miles in all and approaching 200 miles per day.

To give you some comparison the current record stands at 176 days and I think the average daily mileage was about 110-120 miles. So why do I think I can almost cut this record in half? It is built on my philosophy; You can Achieve anything if you are willing to mind to it. When I say this I don’t mean positive thinking, I mean specific level headed planning, preparation and precise execution.

With this challenge I want to spark peoples imagination, expand what they think they are capable of, provoke there thoughts and belief’s about themselves, push themselves further and this is not just on a physical level but on a mental, financial, social, vocational, spiritual and familial level.

Are you the type of cyclist that dreads the site of a hill loaming in the distance? I was, sometimes I still find myself dreading the upcoming hill, but as I read and learn about the art and skill of climbing hills this dread has become less and less.

I now become curious about what they might hold, how long will they be? How steep will they get? How long can I stay in the saddle?

Asking these types of questions for me builds an excitement, they challenge me to push myself a little further, to experiment with my riding style and find out if what I have been reading or watching will work for me.

Here are a few more ideas about how climb hills, some might work some might not, but anyway here they are. These ideas are from a book I have been reading a book Elite Performance Cycling, Successful Sportives by Garry Palmer and Richard Allen.

They start by mentioning that getting out of the saddle and powering up can deplete your energy and cause you to suffer from fatigue much earlier in the ride. They continue to say however, that if powering up means staying with a fast group of riders this could benefit you in the long run because riding in a group can result in major energy savings in the long run.

Longer climbs they say can be best dealt with by spinning at a cadence of 85-95 rpm in a gear that feels relatively easy, sustain this cadence and adjust your gears according to the gradient.

Becoming a skilful climber isn’t about fitness it’s more about teaching yourself how to pace your climbs, find a gear and pace you can maintain, don’t go at someone else’s pace as you may stick with them for the first few kilometres but if you blow up you can slip down the field very fast.

Finally do your homework on the climbs you will be up against, this will give you an idea of how to prepare in training and how to ride the event as a whole.

Not so fast, says Brother Fran!

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has signed a contract to ride Specialized bikes for the coming season.

That would now appear to be news to Contador’s brother, mechanic and financial advisor, Fran. “That’s incredible. It has nothing to do with reality. I don’t know what’s behind this leak,” he said. “It surprised me that this news made it into a lot of important media outlets without any foundation at all.”

Specialized, Trek, Colnago and Pinarello have all confirmed making bike offers to Contador. The latest rumor making the rounds has Schwinn raising the stakes even higher with a plan to supply the Spaniard with vintage 70’s yellow Schwinn Varsitys.

The famous Schwinn 10 speeds were stored in a warehouse in Mississippi and are in perfect working condition according to a source who has inspected them. “They look like they could still fly — them tires need pumping though,” said Elmer Wilkins, a former warehouse employee.

“Indeed, this proposal has been made,” said Contador’s brother. “It is a rather appealing offer. We will examine it carefully from a sporting perspective. If Alberto wins the tour again on a 35 year old bike, there will be no question who is the champion.”

Particularly if you own a property in an urban area or near a university or center of business, many

Particularly if you own a property in an urban area or near a university or center of business, many specialized tenant markets are just waiting to be captured. Specialized property management may be just the solution you’ve been looking for to decrease vacancies and guarantee steady rental income. When considering just a few of your options below, be sure that you take your property, location, property management style, and goals into consideration.

Section 8 and low-income housing
Essentially, the Section 8 program provides low-income individuals with government-assisted rent. Generally, tenants pay approximately 30 percent of a unit’s rent and the government pays the remaining balance directly to the tenant’s landlord. In such a scenario, the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) will determine the unit’s fair market rate (FMR) and the landlord is not allowed to charge the tenant anything over this amount. While it is up to you to choose whether or not to participate in Section 8, keep the following points in mind:

You will be subject to property inspection to ensure you meet HUD’s Housing Quality Standards.

You will not be able to charge a Section 8 tenant more than FMR.

Regardless of your state’s laws, you cannot evict a Section 8 tenant without judicial action for eviction.

While there may be some similarities, low-income housing is not the same as Section 8. Rather than receiving rental income from the government, property owners who run low-income properties are eligible for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC). But it’s important to bear in mind that these tax credits apply only if you adhere to the rules and regulations that determine who can live in your building and how much they can be charged. Not abiding by the rules that are set forth can result in a whole lot of headaches, not to mention economic loss. Despite the red tape that can come with low-income housing property management, there is a large pool of renters in need of low-income housing. If your property is in an appropriate situation, low-income property management may be a good solution for you.

Student housing
College students can be a landlord’s best friend or worst enemy. The problems with renting to students are fairly straightforward. Generally speaking, you’re dealing with younger renters (many of whom may be living on their own for the first time). With this in mind, you may be more likely to experience noise and upkeep issues. Because of the school schedule, you may also find yourself turning apartments over annually or having to deal with sub-lets during the summer months.

But there are some very real positives when it comes to renting to students as well, most of which are financial. If you are living in an area that houses a college or university, chances are you will have a more dense renting population than you would otherwise. This means that—for at least nine months out of the year—students offer a very real way to keep your vacancy levels low. Also, while students may not inherently have a lot of income (or any at all), when a parent or guardian co-signs the lease, in most cases that monthly check is just as reliable as it would be under any other circumstances.

Sure, you may have to be a bit more hands-on than you would otherwise be when it comes to running student housing. But the bottom line is, they offer a nice steady flow of income.

Corporate housing
More likely than not, managing corporate housing is fairly different from any other kind of property management you’ve done to date. First of all, you’ll be dealing with a company rather than an individual tenant. In most corporate housing situations, a company will rent out one or more rooms in a property, with the understanding that one or more of their employees or clients will occupy this space over the duration of the rental term. The way this actually works out may vary from having one stable tenant for a year at a time to having a cast of different tenants in and out on as little as a daily or weekly basis.

The good news here is that signing a lease with a corporate entity allows property managers to feel relatively secure that payment issues will be avoided. There are not necessarily downsides to this scenario, just things to consider that make this situation different from renting to an individual such as: assuming the responsibility for furnishing the unit; the potential inability to build a relationship with the tenant or screen for undesirable tenant behavior; and, in some cases, the knowledge that you will not necessarily have a tenant occupying the unit at all times to immediately alert you when repair and upkeep issues crop up.

If you are looking for ways to decrease vacancy rates and generate more income, remember: There are always ways to think outside of the box when it comes to property management. Before you undertake one of these (or any other) specialized property management endeavors, just make sure you have carefully thought out the pros and cons and are well versed on any specific tax considerations or rules and regulations that may apply.

We finished assembly on a bike not too long ago that was pretty cool, so we thought we’d share it with you. We’ve got lots of photos too! Here’s the details on the build:

-Frameset: 2010 Specialized S-Works Roubaix SL2 & S-Works Pave’ seatpost
-Wheelset: Shimano Dura Ace 7850-c24-cl
-Tires: Continental Gran Prix 4000s
-Group: Shimano Dura Ace 7900 (w/ Ultegra 6700 STI & f. derailleur)
-Handlebar: Ritchey SuperLogic Carbon
-Bar Tape: Specialized Roubaix EVA
-Stem: S-Works Pro-Set
-Saddle: Selle Italia Max Flite Gel Flow

Stuart loves his new wheels too – but I guess we could have expected that.

Enjoy the ride!

Matt.
