• Dos cargas que equivalen a dos juegazos completamente distintos
• Jugabilidad tremenda

CONTRAS

• Dificultad ENORME, apto solo para verdaderos jugones
• La respuesta a los controles podría ser algo más precisa
• Aterrizar el helicóptero es MUY DIFICIL

CONCLUSIÓN

“Army Moves” es uno de los ejemplos más claros de que no es necesario utilizar un hardware de potencia desmedida ni un equipo de 500 personas para realizar un videojuego redondo, tanto en el aspecto técnico como en la parte jugable. A pesar de que acaba de cumplir 23 años sigue conservándose igual de bien que el primer día, con una jugabilidad que te invita a echar una partida más para ver si en esta ocasión puedes superar aquel salto tan difícil.

Si su dificultad hubiera sido algo más ajustada estaríamos ante un título de éxito mundial. Aun así, “Army Moves” es uno de los mejores arcades de acción aparecidos en 8 bits, un juego que no hubiera desentonado (salvando las diferencias técnicas, claro) en cualquier salón recreativo de la época y que demuestra que en los 80 España estaba a la cabeza en lo que a desarrollo de videojuegos se refiere.No en vano, este juego fue el que situó internacionalmente a Dinamic, llegando a ser exportado al Reino Unido (distribuido por Ocean/Imagine)  y reversionado para otras plataformas no tan populares en España (Commodore 64, Atari y Amiga).

En resumen , “Army moves” es un título absolutamente recomendable para todo aquel que le gusten los videojuegos. Si no lo habéis probado todavía ya estáis tardando…

NOTA: Como no he podido encontrar un video de la versión de Spectrum, os dejo aquí un par de videos de la versión Amstrad (es el mismo juego pero con mejores gráficos gracias a un magnífico uso del color). Recordad que la clave para poder jugar la segunda parte es : 26362

The Federal Communications Commission said today it’s soliciting proposals from those looking to become administrators for TV band database managers, moving one step closer toward making white space broadband available on the unused airwaves that exist between digital TV channels.

White spaces are increasingly seen as a way to provide broadband service to underserved markets and to spur innovation and competition in a mobile arena dominated by a few major players. While white space broadband has its detractors — including those who use wireless microphones in their performances — they are increasingly seen as a way to allocate spectrum to wireless broadband that may not be dominated by tier-one mobile carriers.

While the solicitation of proposals is not unexpected — FCC Chair Julius Genachowski has continuously spoken out in favor of “the creative use of spectrum” — the move was applauded by Public Knowledge,  a tech-centric public interest group based in Washington.

“Selecting an administrator for the white spaces database is a crucial step toward bringing consumers another choice in a restrictive broadband marketplace,” said Harold Feld, director of Public Knowledge. “We expect that use of the white spaces spectrum will foster innovation and create jobs as new devices and services become available.”

Proposals for those looking to become administrators for the white spaces database are due by June 4, 2010, and the FCC will invite comments on the proposals until Feb. 3. The commission did not set a date for naming the administrators.

With Jim Hobert and Vivekananda Roy, we have just completed an arxived paper on the finer convergence properties of two data augmentation algorithms. Every reversible Markov chain defines a functional operator over an space whose spectrum encodes the convergence properties of the chain. When the state space of the chain is finite, the spectrum is just the set of eigenvalues of the corresponding Markov transition matrix. However, when the state space is infinite, the spectrum may be uncountable, and is nearly always impossible to calculate. This is the case for most applications of the data augmentation (DA) algorithm, where the state space of the DA Markov chain is infinite. However, we show in this paper that, under regularity conditions that include the finiteness of the augmented space, the operators defined by the DA chain and by Hobert and Marchev’s (2008) alternative chain are both compact, and the corresponding spectra are both finite subsets of [0; 1). The main result in the paper is that the spectrum of Hobert and Marchev’s (2008) chain dominates the spectrum of the DA chain in the sense that the ordered elements of the former are all less than or equal to the corresponding elements of the latter. As a concrete example, we study a widely used DA algorithm for the exploration of posterior densities associated with standard mixture models,  introduced in an earlier paper of mine’s with Jean Diebolt (Diebolt and Robert, 1994). In particular, we compare this mixture DA algorithm with an alternative algorithm proposed by Sylvia Frühwirth-Schnatter (2001) that is based on random label switching. I am very glad to be part of this paper as it provides an exact assessment of the convergence speed of the DA algorithm for normal mixtures, a problem I discussed at length with Richard Tweedie when I visited him in Colorado in 1993…

The above graph shows how the dominant eigenvalue—the one that drives convergence—moves with the number of observations in the case of a Bernoulli mixture for different values of the Bernoulli probabilities. As expected, the convergence speed quickly decreases with the sample size, even in this toy example.The gain resulting from using the second scheme of Sylvia Frühwirth-Schnatter is obvious in the above graph, obtained for a normal mixture.

I got a little something in the mail today. It was a copy of the latest Spectrum book. This book is now in it’s 16th edition and is an annual showcase of the best of the best as far as fantasy art and illustration coming out today. I’ve been fortunate to be in it for the past five years. This year was a little different because I received a silver award for editorial illustration. The piece of mine which won wasn’t really done as an editorial illustration but rather as a piece for one of my gallery shows but I had to fit it into a category. It has been printed in magazines so there you have it. In any event… this year a got an award and the trophy to prove it. It’s this pyramid design which has various dragon eyes on all four sides (mechanical eye shown). It’s no big deal but when you reach that point where you no longer get little league baseball trophies or you aren’t Tiger Woods…  it becomes cool again. Ok, I’ll shut up now.

They’re listed on their myspace as being rock/punk/alternative; isn’t every band? (apart from those ridiculously precise genres that are invented on the spot like “industrial four dimensional nerdcore!!!!”. This band whole-heartedly lives up to its description if you think ‘rock’ means ‘Fallout Boy’, ‘punk’ means ‘Green Day’ and ‘alternative’ means ‘Panic At The Motherfucking Disco’. Methinks they’re actually an ordinary EMO band. Fast synth melody, chugging rhythm guitar and bass, whiney lyrics about how they broke a nail and their life isn’t worth living anymore, it ain’t my cup of tea coz I don’t lie shit in my tea.
