Thomas Gabriel Fischer kończąc działalność swojej grupy Hellhammer nie zamierzał wcale zrywać z muzyką. Przyświecał mu cel grania ambitniejszego i o lepszej produkcji, stąd też zdecydował się na powołanie do życia tworu o nazwie Celtic Frost. I choć wielu słuchaczy myślało ówcześnie, że to po prostu inkarnacja Hellhammer pod odmiennym szyldem, rzeczywistość była inna. Jak wspominał później Tom, jego poprzednia formacja była przez długi czas przekleństwem nowego projektu i niemalże go nie przekreśliła. Na szczęście, szwajcarski Celtic Frost przetrwał, otwierając nowy rozdział w historii ciężkiego grania, z czasem stając się też źródłem inspiracji dla wielu zespołów.

Potępieńcze wycie umęczonych dusz otwiera płytę, a zarazem także kompozycję “Into The Crypt Of Rays”, opowiadającą o średniowiecznym seryjnym mordercy i okultyście, Gillesie de Rais. Dynamiczny utwór z rzężącymi, aczkolwiek czytelnie brzmiącymi gitarami i chrapliwym nieco głosem Warriora dobrze oddaje, jak zabrzmi cały album. Od razu słychać, że Celtic Frost lepiej wyprodukowano, niż dziełka Hellhammer czy też Venom, którego echa w muzyce Fischera gdzieś się odbijają. Słychać też zresztą inspirację Black Sabbath (ociężałe, mocne riffy) i Motörhead (charakterystyczne przyspieszenia). Przede wszystkim, choć nie jest to grzeczna muzyka, zdecydowanie więcej tu swoistej elegancji i ogłady, niż chociażby u wspomnianej angielskiej grupy dowodzonej przez Cronosa. Nadal jednak pozostaje agresywnym graniem na styku thrashu, heavy i dopiero rodzącego się black metalu – chociaż na takim, swoją drogą kapitalnym, “Procreation (Of The Wicked)” pewnie uczyła się grać niejedna doom metalowa kapela, a tytułowy kawałek mógł być inspiracją dla deathmetalowców. Fischer nie zdecydował się na “Morbid Tales” zbytnio eksperymentować, wszystkie utwory mają takie samo, chropawe brzmienie gitar i podobną motorykę, co sprawia, że przy pierwszych przesłuchaniach nie jest tak łatwo odróżnić od siebie większość z nich. Warto też nadmienić, że muzycy lubią zmieniać znienacka tempo, jak chociażby w “Visions Of Mortality”. Najbardziej awangardowym elementem albumu jest z pewnością instrumentalny “Danse Macabre”, pełen dziwacznych, schizoidalnych dźwięków. Pewną nowalijką jest też krótka żeńska deklamacja w “Return To The Eve” – ten patent podejrzy w przyszłości niejedna black metalowa banda, choć trzeba pamiętać, że wcześniej wykorzystał go już Venom.

Celtic Frost wjazd na metalową scenę mieli bezkompromisowy, ale prawdziwy przełom, dokonany za sprawą “To Mega Therion” i “Into The Pandemonium”, dopiero ich – i światek ciężkiego grania – czekał.

For the time being, there’s a new tour hitting the road next winter… Megadeth, Slayer and special guests Testament! Holy cow!!! Hellhound to formacja pochodząca z Kraju Kwitnącej Wiśni. Istnieją już od 2002 roku i od tej pory regularnie co dwa lata uraczają nas kolejnymi krążkami, co prawda na pierwszy rzut poszła epka zatytułowana Welcome To Metal Zone, ale że materiał dorby i konkretny to postanowiłem naskrobać parę słów korzystając z dnia wolnego. Tak więc zapraszam a recenzje dwóch długograjów niebawem

Jako iż jest to ep, to wiele materiału tu nie będzie i tak tez jest. Całe 20 minut muzyki, ale za to jakiej zajebistej. Słucham juz któryś raz z rzędu tego materiału i nie nudzi mi się ani odrobinę. Już po pierwszym obrocie nie mogłem usiedzieć w miejscu i sam nie wiem jak udało mi się napisać ten tekst. Przecież w tym jest tyle muzyki Exciter i heavy metalu podanej w najlepszy z możliwych sposobów że w głowie mi się to nie mieści. I nie musi, liczy się sama radość z grania a ta wycieka stąd hektolitrami. Te pięć numerów niszczy wioski, trzy z nich to rozpędzone killery nie nie biorące jeńców i pozostawiające same zgliszcza. Metal Zone to opener taki jaki powinien być, idealnie nastraja do całego materiału. Flight Of The Demon nieco zwalnia, gdyż jest utrzymany w średnim tempie co nie znaczy że jest słaby. Wręcz przeciwnie, słucha się go zajebiście, a refren już przy pierwszym odsłuchu zapada w pamięć (tak jak każdy tutaj na dobrą sprawę). Jednak jeśli tak jak ja wolicie pędzące na złamanie karku pociski to ucieszą was na pewno następne dwa kawałki, mianowicie Deathrider oraz Stormtrooper, kolejno 3 i 4 minuty muzyki Exciter jak się patrzy. A jako iż Exciter to jeden z moich ulubionych zespołów to tym bardziej mnie cieszy że Hellhound czerpie garściami z twórczości Kanadyjczków. Na zakończenie pozostaje jeszcze Heavy Metal Generation. Pomijam fakt że takie coś pewnie jebie kiczem na kilometr, ale ta muzyka ma w sobie coś i po dwóch browarach aż chce się krzyczeć na całe gardło tytułowe słowa.

Welcome To Metal Zone to dopiero wstęp do muzyki Hellhound. Warto się z nimi zapoznać, może nie zawojują świata ani nic w tym stylu, ale muzykę grają przednią i to się liczy. We are Heavy Metal Generations.

10 Questions From The King: Fantasy Opus

After having the pleasure of reviewing their debut album, Beyond Eternity (here), Fantasy Opus was nice enough to take some time and answer a few questions for the King. In the interview, bassist Nilson Santágueda and lead guitarist Marcos Carvalho discuss the struggles of the Portugal metal scene, where power metal got its cheese, the concept behind the debut album and the band’s brand-new record contract. Read on for the details and make sure pick up a copy on the debut.

King Cripple: For those who are unfamiliar with Fantasy Opus, please provide a brief history regarding the band? How did you guys end up forming a band together? What have some of the highlights been?

Nilson: When I was invited into Fantasy Opus, it was already a project traced by Marcos Carvalho, yet in an embrionic stage. Marcos Carvalho and Paulo Santos already played together and presented me a brilliant power metal demo in 2001 with a lot of neoclassic influences, a kind of sound I had never listened from any Portuguese band. It was a project that thrilled me completely.

The journey of this band, has not been, at all, easy, and the great merit of this band was to stand tall before all the adversities, from constant change of lineup, to personal difficulties of each of us, so it reminds me of some words spoken by the Producer of “Beyond Eternity”, Luís Barros, who said once, “Most of the time, the bands that make it are not the best, but the ones that persist”. We see bands come and go with great potential, but the bands that slowly build up a fanbase, after a reasonable amount of time, get worldwide recognition sooner or later.

The Highest point of the band so far was to be in a top notch studio recording Beyond Eternity in the Portuguese City of Valadares, directed by Luis Barros. It was a learning experience for the band, and we all have great memories from those days. Luís Barros is the drummer of a legendary metal Portuguese band called Tarantula, which he had already the honour of sharing the stage with, and that was another highlight for us as well.

KC: Fantasy Opus has been around since 1999, which is a surprisingly long time given the fact the band has only produced a demo and now the full-length. What was the reason for such a lengthy delay between material?

Nilson: Like I’ve stated earlier, the path of Fantasy Opus has not been easy, a lot of line up changes and each time that happens, the band has to find another one and teach him the songs. The most difficult of all was to find a lead singer. Portugal’s scene regarding lead singers of the caliber of Pedro Arroja is very poor, and the ones that are in the scene have already their own bands. All of that took its toll also in the moral of the band, so all contributed to delay things.

Just so you have an idea, here’s a “shocker”: The instrumental parts of album were all recorded in 2004! Meaning we spent 3 years looking for a lead singer, with an album completely recorded! I’d say that 99% of the bands in our country would quit, but we didnt and that makes me appreciate the current lineup we have. I look around me on stage when we are playing live and I think “holy shit – I have the top musicians in Portuguse metal around me” – thats a great feeling. Besides that we are all great friends, so I’d say persistence has payed off!!!

KC: How did the band go about writing material for the album? Do the members come together with whole songs or only fragments? Is it a band wide collaboration or completed by only some members?

Nilson: In all thruth, the mastermind behind Fantasy Opus is Marcos Carvalho. He’s the one that traces the main guidelines of the songs, presenting ideas and riffs on which we brainstorm, experiment, and hopefully those ideas evolve into something amazing. Each member of the band has the responsability to contribute with his best “game”, into each and every song. We try to make the end result surprising even for ourselves.

KC: Portugal is not exactly a huge metal hotbed, let alone a power metal one. In quickly browsing a list of bands from Portugal, the King only recognized Daemogorgon and took note of Booby Trap only because it seems rather un-metal to have the word booby in your name. What is the metal scene like in Portugal? Are there any trends as it concerns certain metal genres?

Nilson: I completely agree, this is definately not a hotbed for metal bands, especially power metal bands. The scene here is filled witha lot of metal bands, most of them beeing death metal bands, black metal bands, and hardcore/new metal bands. My sincere idea is that the underground scene is very limited as opposed as countries such as the USA, the technical level of the garage musicians here is fairly low, and we are latins so there are a lot of egos here, so all those factors contribute to the fact that almost all metal bands tend to come and go without having produced anything relevant. It’s very hard to get a lineup where all the members row in sync to the same side, sacrifices that have to be made, responsabilities shared, it’s a lot of work and fight! Only when all interests are converging within a band, the possbilities arise and something positive emanates.

KC: The full-length album, Beyond Eternity, has the medieval fantasy inspired lyrics typical to power metal. The King was having a little trouble trying to determine whether the entire album was structured around a concept or only the “Warrior’s Call” suite of songs. Can you talk a little bit about what type of concepts and imagery are involved with the lyrical content and how those are reflected in the storyline?

Marcos: Sure.The whole album is conceptual. It starts with the “Mystic Messenger” dying to warn people that an ‘age of pain’ – as vague as that might be – will begin soon. The following songs depict various stages of the “journey”, “odyssey”, whatever you want to call it, until the final battle and the resolution.

Although this medieval/fantasy imagery is very common in bands like us, we see our lyrics like a metaphors and not at all literally. That’s why there are no character’s names, and I try to be slightly vague in some points of the plot and about the characters. The lyrics are however, pretty clear on values and intents, like, for example, in “The Sacred Trilogy”. Thats one point of our approach that I think is different.

KC: Power metal gets sort of beat up here in the US compared to its treatment overseas. Part of this is due to the fact classical-based music is generally more palatable overseas, but the genre is also seen as being rather cheesy. The Fantasy Opus brand is certainly power metal with some classical leanings, though it is also slightly more aggressive than most by incorporating moments of speed metal into the fold. What types of albums and musicians do these influences come from?

Marcos: In all honesty, in my personal opinion, I think the cheesyness of power metal is partly deserved. There was a boom of the genre in the 90’s and early 00’s, especially here in Europe, that saturated the market.

In that time, the essence of power metal, which is nothing but melodic speed metal, was “refined” to be more and more commercial, which, in my opinion, became the scene ‘too soft’ and tainted the essence of what this type of sound is, if you know what I mean. Having said that, we do have classical and progressive leanings, and that comes from our influences, but I personally think we identify our sound like bands such Symphony X, Malmsteen, Gamma Ray, Angra, old Megadeth, rather than those, “softer-ultra-commercial-3-minutelalasong” bands.

Regarding influences, we all have different ones. I’ll try to be brief, but we have so many different ones….

Nilson, Paulo Santos and Pedro Arroja are more into traditional heavy/speed metal bands like Iron Maiden, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Queensryche, Angra, Dio.

Claudio’s into those bands, but also thrash and death bands from the 80’s and 90’s, like Death, Decapitated, and Carcass.

Myself… I hear too many to mention, but most of the styles I listen to are metal, prog rock, classical music and fusion stuff, so i’ll state a bunch of names like Symphony X, Cynic, Sieges Even, Dream Theater, Enchant, Gamma Ray, Angra, Megadeth, Rimsky Korsakov, Rachmaninoff, Jason Becker, Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Spastik Ink, Pain of Salvation, Arch Enemy, Ralph Towner, Raul Midon, Diana Krall, Cacophony, Foo Fighters, Manowar, I could go on for ages…

KC: The King understands Fantasy Opus recently inked a new contract with a record label. Congrats! Tell everybody about the label, how the contract came to be and what everyone can expect now that a deal has been reached.

Marcos: Well Thanks!!… We had a bunch of offers before the offer of “Highway 36″, but none was really serious in the sense the conditions were not reasonable in our opinion. The music market is not very well as we all know, and so labels do not want to invest on new up-and-coming bands, simple as that.

Highway 36 made a good offer, with some basic but very solid and reliable conditions. Due to this record deal, the credibility of the band has risen, instead of us beeing just one more unsigned band with “potential”. Also we will have worldwide promotion including key markets like the US, South America and Japan. We will try to “spread the word” and show people what we do. After that, every listener is sovereign in his/her choice.

KC: With the support of a record label, has the band started working on new material yet? What plans does the band have in place for continuing support of the full-length? Any tours or festivals currently planned or in the works?

Nilson: Even before we were signed to “Highway 36″, we where working on new material. At this point we have one song almost completed and some basic structures on about 3 more. To support the album we have been gigging in our homecountry with astounding and flattering reactions. Our manager Santagueda has received some proposals to play outside our home country, but with some dubious conditions, that would prevent the band to perform at it’s best, so we rather not play in those cases.

I know there have been some contacts for us to play in Japan and the USA, but nothing solid yet. So, we are working and open to promoters that are interested in booking us worldwide on decent conditions. So, if you’re a promoter check us out and book us if you like *wink*

KC: The King also understands guitarist Marcos Carvalho is recording a solo album. What can fans expect from the album: something along the line of Fantasy Opus or something in a slightly different direction? Being a member of one metal band already, what was your need for doing a solo album?

Marcos: Well, it will be completely different from Fantasy Opus, and that by itself justifies the need to do it. Like I’ve stated earlier, I listen to a lotttt of different stuff and that inevitably translates in some of the music I write. What I can say is that I was careful to surround myself with some of the most capable musicians on earth; the drummer will be Mr Bobby Jarzombek and the Bass player will be Mr David Santos. It will have much less classical inclination than Fantasy Opus, and much more a progressive bite to it in the line of bands like Spastic Ink and Cacophony. It will also have a lot of fusion -type influences with some abundant clean electric and acoutic guitars, really introspective sound. The main key is here will be the diversity. It will be a very diverse album, in which each song depicts a marking episode or period in the life of a character, but it’s much more mundane, nothing to do with swords and dragons.

KC: Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer these questions. Of all the songs on the album, what one song best represents exactly what Fantasy Opus has to offer the crowded power metal scene? Why? How can someone pick up a copy of the album? Is there anything else you would like to say to those reading?

Nilson: First of all, our Thanks, King, for the oportunity to show your readers what Fantasy Opus is all about. All the songs represent Fantasy Opus, but I think the Warrior’s Call Saga is a very complete song, with a lot of mood changes, and it develops like a roller coaster of emotions and musical styles. I think Fantasy Opus tries to maintain the essence of melodic speed metal with some twists and turns and different elements not very common in most power metal bands, and we all strive to present something that emanates great musicianship overall, and that’s what I think we have to offer.

Album Review: Fantasy Opus - Beyond Eternity

The King really only chooses to skim the surface of the power metal genre whereas he gladly dives considerably deeper into the cesspools of death and black metal. This is because of all the metal subgenres, power metal seems to have the highest percentage of completely and thoroughly boring material. That is why those few bands who actually make an album worth revisiting should be celebrated. The King has such an album to share with all of you lucky sons of bitches – now grovel before him and swear your undying allegiance.

Fantasy Opus play a style rooted in UK power metal mixed with speed metal and occasional classical-styled leads. The Portuguese troupe is currently promoting its debut full-length, Beyond Eternity. The debut album has everything one would expect from a power metal band: Bruce Dickinson-esque vocals, prolonged sections of solos, arpeggio-based leads, loads of double bass, fantasy inspired tales of warriors and battles, so on and so forth. The most refreshing aspect of the band, however, are their minimal use of keyboards.

There is a slight use of keyboards for atmosphere on a couple songs and some piano on the requisite ballads “Higher State Of Mind” and “Chapter I – The Lament”, but the majority of the material is without the melodic contributions of the instrument – a welcomed refrain. Large keyboard atmospheres always seem to carry an extra bit of cheese with them, so their limited use here not only makes the keyboards come across as more tasteful but much more impactful as well.

The album opens with “Mystic Messenger”, an effective concoction of Helloween-esque blistering melodies and a huge vocal hook. “Sacred Trilogy” and “Path Of Destiny” have a slight classical bent bringing to mind Rhapsody Of Fire, minus the symphonic elements of course, before the ballad “Higher State Of Mind” slows things down. The ballad starts off shaky with piano and a slow, forced vibrato but works out the kinks as the song builds in layers and speed. Do not take the name dropping as a lack of identity or originality, as these songs have plenty to offer albeit in a similar vein to those bands mentioned.

The second half of the album is a four song, six movement suite collectively titled “Warrior’s Call”. The whole album seems to concern a warrior seeking to achieve freedom for his people, but the concept really only comes across during those last four songs where the emotion and the separate movements are felt. “Chapter I – The Lament” starts with an elegant string, piano and acoustic guitar arrangement that gradually builds into the following song “Chapter II – Warriors Call”, another Helloween-inspired offering.

The highlight of the album and probably the best power metal song the King has heard in some time is “Chapter III – The Gathering/The Battle/Liberation”. How the razor-sharp melodies are honed from the gorgeous, serene opening as the song moves through its various movements is perfect. Fantasy Opus work wonders with the bass on this song, too. The bass performance throughout the album is neither overly dynamic nor technical, typically matching the rhythm guitar stride for stride, yet the band uses its presence to add just enough grit to give the song the necessary “battle” feel as the bass strings snap and rumble beneath the surface. The way the song reaches its climax and gradually recedes into “Chapter IV – New Dawn” creates a serviceable conclusion, though it is tough to forget its predecessor.

Fantasy Opus is really not bringing any innovation to the genre, yet quality power metal is difficult enough to achieve, so the band should be commended for the material here. Beyond Eternity is definitely an album power metal enthusiast would be well served to pick up, as it has a lot of replay value and is a great example of what the genre can deliver when done right.

Banda Americana de Power/Speed Metal formada em 1982 e que se separou alguns anos depois, deixando um total de 3 discos, sendo este Burn To My Touch seu segundo, com grande influencia do Iron Maiden da época de Paul Di’ Anno, inclusive em seu vocal.

Então, quem curte essa fase do Maiden, mas com pitadas mais Speed Metal, confiram principalmente as faixas Cast Out e Portrait Of Despair

Helloween is a very well respected band in the power metal community, but I’ve had a hard time getting into them. From what I’ve heard, they seem like a campy and lighter version of Iron Maiden. But…

I’m a sucker for power ballads and Helloween has done two of the best power ballads I’ve ever heard with “In The Middle Of A Heartbeat” and “Forever And One (Neverland)”. They were the two main reasons I bought this compilation album (which features remixes and remasters), though I also wanted to give the band another chance after disappointing me a few years earlier with Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II.

After listening to this album, I have a greater appreciation for the band, but I’m completely content with owning this compilation and not delving into the band’s catalog unless I get an extremely strong recommend from someone.

A limited edition box set was also released featuring a third CD showcasing the band’s B-sides.

Puh, war das ein langer Tag!

Wie angekündigt begab ich mich gestern Nachmittag von Hildesheim direkt nach Wolfsburg, wo mich FE beim

lesen des vierten Bandes “Mach´s gut und Danke für den Fisch” der “Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis”-”Trilogie in fünf Teilen” unterbrach, um mit mir am Abend nach Hannover zu reisen und das Kulturzentrum zu besuchen. Warum? Natürlich weil in der “60er Jahre – Halle” Dragonforce auftreten würde!

Der weg mit Auto, Bahn, S-Bahn und zu Fuß dorthin war kurz vor dem Ziel etwas ziellos, aber durch hilfreiche Tipps der Anwohner konnte wir den Ort des Geschehens schließlich doch im dunkeln finden.

Die Location war überraschend klein, aber dafür konnte man den Protagonisten auch sehr nahe kommen und beinahe die Hand schütteln. Nach der mittelmäßigen Vorband aus Würzburg und der Umbaupause wurde es dann auch voll (ich schätze 196 schwarzgekleidete männliche und 4 schwarzgekleidete weibliche Metalfans + eine in Leder gehüllte Metaloma!) und die sechköpfige Truppe von Dragonforce kamen auf die Bühne. Der Drummer natürlich eingesperrt in seinem Schlagzeugkäfig und der

Keyboarder mit eigenwilliger Hiphop-Kleidung sprangen dabei ebenso ins Auge wie das ständige “Fuck you motherfuckers” ins Ohr, das der Frontmann liebevoll ins Mikro brüllte, um das Publikum anzuheizen (oder einfach zu beleidigen).

Wasserflasche und beglückte alle Nicht-Headbanger mit einer kleinen Erfrischung.

Der Sound war übrigens wirklich laut und damit meine ich LAUT, für meinen Geschmack (und an der Quadratmeterzahl der Halle gemessen) schon zu laut. Vorallem beim Einsatz der Hi Hats und hohen Tönen rasselten einem die Ohren. Aber die Musik war dafür nicht schlecht, ich (er)kannte zwar nur ein einziges Lied, aber war etwas neidisch auf den Keyboarder, der neben einer (wahrscheinlich sauteuren) KeyTAR auch noch ein fettes (und wahrscheinlich sauteures) KeyBOARD und so eine (megasauteure) Antenne, die ein elektromagnetisches Feld zur Soundmodulation erzeugt, als Arbeitsgerät zur Verfügung hatte.

Lustig anzusehen waren die kleinen gespielten Rangeleien der beiden Gitarristen und dem Bassisten sowie deren Grimassen.

Das ganze war dann gegen 23.30 Uhr vorbei und FE und ich verpassten leider unseren Zug um 23.59 Uhr, woraufhin wir ganze 5 Stunden und 46 Minuten (!) auf dem geisterhaft leeren Bahnhof die Nacht verbringen mussten. An richtigen Schlaf war ohne richtige Schlafmöglichkeit nicht zu denken und für ein 4 Sterne-Hotel oder ein“Stundenhotel für Pärchen” mangelte es uns

leider an Geld / der richtigen sexuellen Orientierung und so saßen wir in einem Warteraum in ekligen gelben und blauen Licht und spielten Mario Kart, guckten Videos auf dem Handy und versuchten irgendwie einzuschlafen (was nur begrenzt klappte.)

Jedenfalls waren wir dann gegen 6.30 Uhr oder so wieder bei Andreas zu Hause, ich ließ mich ins Bett fallen und schlief erstmal bis 14 Uhr.

ladies & gentlemen i give you: METALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

2 subgenres in particular, power metal & viking metal. viking metal is self-explanatory, and power metal is basically the child of thrash and speed metal, infused with lyrical obsession of all things that got you beat up in high school: dungeons & dragons, lord of the rings (before it was cool), fantasy novels, and the like, sung typically very highly (i.e. “ahhhhhhhhAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”). power metal has been around for a while, but got a little bit of mainstream attention with the success (relatively speaking, they’re far from platinum!) of dragonforce, based highly on their being featured in guitar hero. dragonforce get some flack from the hardcore fanbase of the scene, they’ve been called “nintendo metal” based on the video game sound of their guitars & keyboards, but i think they pwn. then again, metal is not my passion, so perhaps that’s why either way, here’s a hilarious yet awesome (3 words that go together very well when talking about power metal videos & lyrics) video, “operation ground & pound”.

onto the viking metal! this subgenre has its roots in the same place as black metal, not only in that both come from the same regional area (scandinavia) but both are credited with having their beginning with the band bathory. the band’s 1990 album hammerheart was the first viking metal record. viking metal ranges in sound much more, as the common basis for the bands isn’t the sound or style but lyrical topics that focus on norse mythology & the viking age. and now we get to celebrate with 5 videos that do thor proud. beginning with, from the faroe islands…
