BIG NEWS! (fast news?)

Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern near Geneva are celebrating a major milestone after the machine broke energy records overnight to become the most powerful particle accelerator in the world.

At 12.44am this morning, the LHC accelerated beams of subatomic particles to higher energies than any achieved before in a collider.

The machine, which occupies a 27km circular tunnel that straddles the French-Swiss border, was restarted 10 days ago after being shut down for more than a year while engineers repaired damage caused by a helium leak when it was first switched on in September last year.

“The machine is working like a dream,” Lyn Evans, project manager of the LHC, told the Guardian. “It’s brilliant. By the end of the week we should be really moving.”

Inside the particle accelerator, two counter-rotating beams of hydrogen nuclei are whipped up to more than 99.99% the speed of light. At four points around the machine the beams are crossed, steering the particles into high-energy smash-ups. The collisions recreate in microcosm the conditions that existed moments after the big bang.

According to Einstein’s famous equation E = mc2, the energy released by the collisions can create matter in the form of particles that appear in the collider’s detectors.

Scientists hope that when they sift through the subatomic debris they will find particles that are new to physics, such as the Higgs boson, which gives mass to elementary particles, and possibly particles of dark matter, an elusive substance that clusters around galaxies and accounts for most of the mass in the universe.

At 9.48pm last night, engineers at Cern accelerated one beam of particles to 1.05 trillion electronvolts. Three hours later, both beams were hurtling around the machine, each with an energy of 1.18 trillion electronvolts. The energies are greater than any achieved at what is now the second most powerful collider in the world, the Tevatron at Fermilab on the outskirts of Chicago.

“For me, it’s not so much the energy record that matters, it’s that we’ve got through the start of the acceleration process where things are changing rapidly,” Evans said. As the beams are accelerated, eddy currents build up in the enormous superconducting magnets inside the machine and produce erratic magnetic fields that affect how the beams behave.

In the next few days, Cern managers will decide whether to start colliding particles at even greater energy, or run for a short time at lower energies. Scientists will use the first collisions to calibrate their detectors, ensuring they pick up any particles that might be produced under the known laws of physics.

“We’re about to move into a new energy regime, and when we do that, we can start to see new things,” Evans said.

“We are still coming to terms with just how smoothly the LHC commissioning is going. It is fantastic,” said Rolf Heuer, Cern’s director general. “We are continuing to take it step by step, and there is still a lot to do before we start physics in 2010. I’m keeping my champagne on ice until then.”

Over the next week, engineers will increase the beam intensity to a level that is expected, before Christmas, to reveal new physics at work. The first extended series of high-energy collisions is expected to start in January or February next year, when each beam will be accelerated to 3.5 trillion electronvolts.

“I was here 20 years ago when we switched on Cern’s last major particle accelerator, LEP,” said Steve Myers, Cern’s director of accelerators and technology, referring to the Large Electron Positron collider, which smashed electrons into their antimatter counterparts, positrons.

“I thought that was a great machine to operate, but this is something else. What took us days or weeks with LEP we’re doing in hours with the LHC. So far, it all augurs well for a great research programme.”

yeah, bo-ring. how about some corny science jokes?!

So an infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar.
The first one orders a beer. The second orders half a beer. The third, a quarter of a beer. The bartender says “I hate you guys” and pours two beers.

A Large Hadron Collider walks into a bar. The bartender says “Hey, we don’t serve large hadron colliders in here.”
The Large Hadron Collider says, “That’s OK. I’m broke, anyway.”

Heisenberg gets stopped on the motorway by the police.
Cop: Do you know how fast you were going sir?
Heisenberg: No, but I know exactly where I am.

A photon checks into a hotel. The bell hop asks him ” Can I help you with your luggage?” To which the photon replies, “I don’t have any. I’m traveling light.”

A neutron goes into a bar and orders a beer. As the neutron is reaching for its wallet, the bartender looks at it and says, “Oh, for you–no charge.

a bar of gold walks into a bar, the bartender turns and yells “A, u” …

you may lose friends if you say these out loud. but between you and me, its been a riot.

Each spiral forms a single pulse. The frequency rate between each pulse of physical matter creates a measurement for both Time and for the speed of Light.[i]

Before the Earth became a planet of duality, it was encompassed by a non-duality firmament. There were two elliptical bands that arched around it; one was electrical in nature, the other was magnetic. The two were unified to form an oscillating Crystalline shield. The tone that was emitted from the pulsing of this Crystalline sphere was the frequency of OM.

Light

The study of light has fascinated physicists throughout the ages. Newton believed that light was made up of particles whereas Young demonstrated that light has wave-like properties.
The study of light developed independently until 1865 when James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), by a purely theoretical argument based upon a missing symmetry in the known laws of electricity and magnetism, added a term to the equations and predicted a form of electromagnetic wave that travels with a speed exactly equal to the then-known speed of light (3 × 108 meters/second). In one swoop he consolidated light, electricity and magnetism, as well as other forms of electromagnetic waves, many of which were yet unknown.

Light is an electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is visible to the human eye (about 400-700nm), which means that light is simply a name for a range of electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the human eye. This wave has amplitude, which is the brightness of the light, wavelength, which is the color of the light, and an angle at which it is vibrating, called polarization. This was the classical interpretation, crystallized in Maxwell’s Equations, which held sway until Planck, Einstein and others came along with quantum theory.

Light exhibits certain behaviors which are characteristic of any wave and would be difficult to explain with a purely particle-view. Light reflects in the same manner that any wave would reflect. Light refracts in the same manner that any wave would refract. Light diffracts in the same manner that any wave would diffract. Light undergoes interference in the same manner that any wave would interfere. And light exhibits the Doppler effect just as any wave would exhibit the Doppler effect. Light behaves in a way that is consistent with our conceptual and mathematical understanding of waves. Since light behaves like a wave, one would have good reason to believe that it might be a wave.

Although light is a form of wave, in many instances, its behavior can only be understood by resorting to a particle description. The photoelectric effect is one such event. Experimental measurements demonstrated that the energy of individual ejected electrons was proportional to the frequency, rather than the intensity, of the light. Furthermore, below a certain minimum frequency, which depended on the particular metal, no current would flow regardless of the intensity. These observations clearly contradicted the wave theory, and for years physicists tried in vain to find an explanation.

By Columnist Harry Trunckles The other day, I was talking to my wife Anna about that no good asshole

By Columnist Harry Trunckles

The other day, I was talking to my wife Anna about that no good asshole she left me for and she said “He’s light years beyond you Harry, don’t even compare yourself to him!”

I just slapped her face right there. First of all, anyone who thinks that light years are a unit of measurement for how poor of a husband I am clearly doesn’t understand the basics of physics. Light years describe how time is relative to light. This is similar to using “dog years” to describe your beloved pet’s rapid decrepidation. And a light year is roughly the length of time it takes for the universe to begin and then end. Kind of a useless measurement for us humans in my opinion.

Particle Physicists (More like particle suckacists! Zing!) have debated about the nature of light for the last few years. Is it a particle or is it a wave? Since this question isn’t being hotly debated by wave physicists, I am going to assume that the particle physicists are a bunch of biased bastards. There has actually been a number of rigorous studies done to determine this. Some indicated it was a wave. Some indicated it was a particle. The lazy conclusion they came to was that light was both a particle AND a wave. Ok, before you call them all idiots for arriving at such a counterintuitive notion, let me tell you about how they found this out. You’ll laugh even harder.

Anyway, let me go into the detail of this horrible Freudian-projected nightmare. The scientist would tell you that if you have a photon entering two slits, then it could theoretically interfere with itself if you do not observe it. If you do observe it, then the photon will not interfere with itself. This is all just some bullshit fantasy that if your wife doesn’t observe you having sex with two other women, it’s okay, since there’s some kind of penile (represented by photons) interference. Jeez scientists, grow up!

Its so patently obvious that this is the Freudian expression of the scientist’s desire for an adulterous threesome. One in which his penis interferes with itself. Guess what science guys, I tried that excuse, but my wife still won’t return my calls. Kind of punches a hole in your logic, don’t you think?

Back in the day, scientists wanted to know if there was this luminiferous ether that light travelled through. They never found the luminiferous ether! No shit, you particle dumbassicists! Didn’t you read Genesis chapter 1? God spoke and He bespoke light. Clearly light is supernatural in origin. You dipshiticists. However, to be fair, science was right about there needing to be a medium for light to travel through. You see, sound can’t travel in a vacuum. And since light is composed of God Voice Particles (GVP), any over-arching theory of cosmology has to include something like deity air (not some stupid ether!) for the sound particles to travel through.

My colleagues, occasionally secular godless science can be right. One thing physicists got right was when they said that at the speed of light (you know, 9,999 miles per hour), time does not pass, so light experiences no aging just like God. So clearly light could have only originated from God. My goodness, what do these jerks at MIT do all day not to realize that ageless particles prove their own origin – their own origin being that of God!

Speaking of time coming to a stop, there’s this stupid theory called Relativation Theory (you’d think it would be about relatives or something) that says that time slows down as you approach the speed of light. Let me tell you, I tried driving really fast in my car, and not only did time not slow down, but it actually seemed to pass faster as it didn’t take as long to get to my work. I was 20 minutes early! Wow, who came up with such a terrible theory?

Another claim by physicists is that light can’t escape a black hole. How absurd! Being the natural skeptic that I am, I went into my backyard where there are plenty of holes. I tossed a mirror down one and shone my flashlight into the hole. The beam of photons bounced right back out. Maybe the scientist that came up with this theory fell down a crevasse as a kid or was just really scared of the dark. Seems like astronomy might be a bad field to work in for you guys.

Light is actually not as complex as people think it is. The mainstream opinion is that humans only percieve a limited spectrum of light known as the “visible” and that there is also “Infrared”, “Ultraviolet,” “Radio,” “X-Rays,” and a bunch of other satanic beams of light rays. The truth is that scientists saw their funding drying up after they discovered Red through Purple and went ahead and made up some new kinds of light.

Let me conclude on this note. A particle physicist once asked me if a cat in some box was dead or alive due to some quantum mechanical mumbo jumbo aptly named Schumaker’s Cat. What a stupid question. I kill my neighbor’s cats routinely by boxing them up and tossing them into a river. So I’m fairly certain that most of the time when a cat is in a box, it is dead. Especially after I run it over with my Ford truck! In the interest of testing this ridiculous claim, I took the litter of kittens my neighbor was trying to find a home for and put them all in a box. Well, big disappointment. They took a whole day and a half to die, and no matter how many times I observed them they never came back to life.

Do you really want to believe a bunch of eggheads who are afraid of the dark, like to cheat on their wives, think cats can come back to life literally, and ask you stupid riddles about dead cats?

The possibility of parallel universes hinted by modern physics is always fascinating to think about.

The possibility of parallel universes hinted by modern physics is always fascinating to think about.

Needless to say, it is difficult to imagine a “parallel” universe ( If our universe has no limits, then how can there be another space-time in parallel ! )

We need an approach to put all these together in such a way that our analytical mind can make a meaning of such possibilities.

Now what if we keep aside the concept of space-time framework for some time, and bring in our very famous exception-handling methodology of java, we see that in concept, different universes can exist in parallel.
Let us have a look at the code snippet below.

if(entity.level == 3)
{
try
{
//(this is universe at 3rd higher level )
// space-time based on dC, the limiting speed for events in this universe
(like : E = m dC^2)

// — other rules
if(entity.level == 2)
{
try
{
//(universe at 2nd higher level)
// space-time based on pC,the limiting speed for events in this universe
like : (E = m pC2)
//– other rules
if(entity.level == 1)
{
try
{
//(Universe at our level)
// space-time rules based on c, speed of light.
like   E = mc2)
// — other rules of physics.
}catch(SpeedOfLocalEventAchievedException)
{
throw new DivineEntityDetected(e);
}
catch(InsideSingularityException)
{
throw new EntityAtTransit(e);
}
}

/*—- similar code for higher universes — */

What if each of us are inside one of these try blocks, following these rules in a seperate thread called our life ? what if at some point of time, we will move over to the next universe ?

Also such an approach can explain what happens to an object when it achieves speed faster than the speed of light (which is the limiting speed of our universe). Such a case is clearly an exception (as it doest not go well with physical laws at our level) the handling for which may exist at a higher level universe. So if one imagines that a traveler who moves at a speed higher than speed of light reaches another universe, well, may be he is very much correct !

Interestingly, Hindu mythology also speaks of different universes with different time-spans for the entities in each of them (like
Manushya Loka, Pitru Loka, Deva Loka, Brahma Loka and the Timeless Vishnu Loka) . And considering the fact the ancient sages were simply too great to write anything out of fantasy, well, may be they knew how to move between the “divine code blocks”…

Do you ever look out at the world and think, “How could it be that any effectively generated formal theory in which all arithmetic truths can be proved is inconsistent”? Or, “That is one hokey looking tree; no way that is real…. They could have put a little more time into that one, jeesh!”

I call that that questionable reality realiquanto, a combination of “reality” and “aliquanto,” which is latin for “somewhat.”

A lot of what we see we take for granted without having the slightest idea of how it works. The rest of what we see we take for granted believing that we understand it, when in realiquanto we have only a rudimentary understanding of its true nature.

I have the following questions about the universe. Feel free to enlighten me with your rudimentary explanations:

1.

First of all, it occurs to me that time & space do not exist. To define time, one must refer to time. The same is true of space. It might take some dictionaries a while to get there, but inevitably they will have to refer to time in defining time and space in defining space. In the immediate definitions, dictionaries will indirectly refer to those terms by using words that rely on time or space for their meanings.

For example, on dictionary.com, time is defined as “the system of those sequential relations that any event has to any other, as past, present, or future.” To understand this, one must know what the word sequential means. Dictionary.com defines sequential as, “characterized by regular sequence of parts.” But what is a sequence? Again, Dictionary.com: “the following of one thing after another.” To understand this, however, one must know what following means. The same source defines it as, “that which comes immediately after.” So, what does after mean? Dictionary.com: “later in time than.” Ha! Did you catch that? They probably thought no one would bother following the trail all the way back to its beginning. It is as if fleeble were defined as “that which is fleeble,” or “fleeble is the fleeble between things.”

If a concept can not be defined without referring back to itself, it has no objective reality. And because everything – all matter and energy – exists in time and space, it follows that nothing exists. Now, you might be thinking that I have wasted a lot of space writing all of this and you have wasted considerable time reading it. However, as I have just demonstrated, neither one of us have wasted anything. And in any case, neither of us exists.

2.

Probiotics are all the rage. They are supposed to replenish the natural beneficial fauna in your body. But if you eat a probiotic yogurt or pill or whatever, won’t it be digested by your stomach acids? How could it possibly survive your digestive system to set up shop in your body?

3.

If the farther away an astronomical object the older the light, and we are looking back in time to near the start of the universe, how come that light hasn’t past us already? I mean, we started from the same Big Bang & the light from that explosion is traveling at, well, the speed of light. So, when we look toward the center of the universe, it seems like that light should have long since passed by us, since we have to be traveling away from the center slower than the speed of light.

4.

In the subjective reality of “The Secret,” what if two people who were experts at “the Secret” came to an intersection at the same time from different directions & both believed that there would be a green light for them – would they pass harmlessly though each other?

5.

And finally, if it is wrong to eat people, why do they taste so good? (Just kidding. Really.)

The title of this journal references a curiosity I’ve had since I was a child, when I learned that the speed of light was 186,000 miles per second. I could logically figure that if something was traveling at any given speed, that meant it was leaving one place, and arriving at another. So, since elementary school, I’ve always been fascinated with the darkness that is left behind as the light travels. This is my attempt to start making sense of the questions and curiosities that have filled my five pound sack of a mind with ten pounds of question marks.

I don’t often talk about my life on the internet, but it may come up on occasion. My primary focus here is for my intangible cognitive and emotional flotsam and jetsam to ride the currents and possibly get shipwrecked here on the calm beach of my computer screen, to be combed through at my, and your, leisure.

Before I get started, let me highlight that this post is going to be very theoretical and hence not

Before I get started, let me highlight that this post is going to be very theoretical and hence not very well-thought-out.

In your n number of years alive, where n is a positive real number, your brother or any physics geek has at least told you that the speed of light, c is the greatest speed achievable in this Universe.

The geek is right. The speed of light is the pesky, theoretical speed barrier of physical bodies.

But the geek is wrong, too. The speed of light is not the greatest speed achievable.

How can the geek be right and wrong, then?

I will have to remind you that speed is the change in distance per unit time. Anything that travels a distance in a given time can be said to have, well, traveled. And I’m gonna remind you, anything, not just physical bodies, is qualified to use the verb ‘travel.’

Information can in fact travel faster than the speed of light. The very important remark here is that, information is carried by physical bodies like cables, or maybe pulses or electromagnetic waves, like light. The physics Nazi would now say, “Aha! The fastest medium of transport, light, travels at the speed of light! You are clearly wrong.”

Welcome to the microscopic world. I’m going to use a very crude analogy first, before bringing in the essence of the discussion. This analogy is not thought by me, of course, but it works so well that it is always fun using it.

Imagine that you have a spinning coin in a box. You place this box deep in the Pacific Ocean. Don’t ask why is it spinning or what is keeping it spinning! I already said that it is not a well-thought-out story. It’s just spinning, okay. Suppose you have another identical box with a spinning coin. You place it on a moon 23 light-years away. (I said don’t ask how!)

Suppose that the first coin comes down heads. Instantaneously the second coin, separated by a distance of 23 light years, comes down tails.

It happens as though information has traveled 23 light years in a fraction of a second. Except that it really did travel at a speed greater than c!

Spin is a property of electrons. We designate clockwise and anticlockwise spins to electrons. For a pair of electrons, the sum of the spins must always be zero. Now we have the two electrons separated by a sufficiently great distance and we do not know their individual spin. Now we open the “box” and observe the spin of the first electron. You see it and it’s clockwise. Almost without a delay, the spin of the second electron would be anticlockwise.

We say that the first electron is entangled with the second electron. They are in fact dependent of one another. They are one entity. Changing one property would instantaneously change the property of the other. In this sense, we have traveled at a speed greater than the speed of light.

This property can be exploited to teleport objects. Teleportation is simple, really. There are several ways to teleport, but we’ll only look at teleporting from entanglement today.

Say we transmit information in bits and we assign “0″ and “1″ to these bits. If we have entity A and B and we code “0″ into A, then B would spit out “1″ in no time. We have managed to transmit “1″ to the other end of the universe. If this process is repeated many times, you can send the message “Physics is Rubbish” or “The Geek is Lame” to a faraway civilization in a very short time. That’s the theoretical foundation of this form of teleportation. And physics is not rubbish.

That’s it for now. Before that I would like to clarify one thing. The geek is not wrong! The speed of light is indeed the barrier and physical objects cannot travel faster than that. And the clever use of entanglement as above has not been entirely workable because of the almighty Uncertainty Principle. It’s theoretically correct but good old Uncertainty Principle once again defends nature. We can, of course, try to outsmart* it. What I’ve shown here is just the basic style of communication of this sort. And by now if any of you are curious of the mechanism behind this peculiar event, I’ll have to defer you to the core idea of quantum theory, which I suspect you already know.

Noel H. Wan

*By outsmarting the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle is by no means working against it. No one, I repeat, no one has ever found a way to defeat this powerful principle. But we can devise strategies as to make use of the principle to circumvent around the principle itself.

P/s : I find this topic very interesting. Also, Many key ideas have not been explored. I might return to some key ideas discussed/missed out in this post.

“How about we play around with DNA and actually create a superhuman being”?

Yes, it’s been contemplated widely, but then it’s never been possible with ‘ethics’ cropping its officious little head and turning the idea to stone. So I’ve been trying to think up an ethical way to bring superheroes out of the pages of comic books and have them walk/fly/crawl among us.

The way I see it, gene manipulation is the only way to go. Unlike the half-baked theory we’ve read in comic books in which most superheroes were either blessed/ cursed with their extraordinary powers after being exposed to radiation by some means.

Take Marvel’s friendly neighbourhood Spiderman who got his arachnid powers when a radioactive spider gored its pincers into his hand or Daredevil who was sauced with nuclear waste. Back here in the real world, mutations of this sort aren’t likely in the least.

Chances of radioactivity altering your entire genetic make-up instantly giving you the ability to shoot sticky webbing through your wrist, scale walls with protrusible hairs made up of steel-like keratin or gaining ‘spider-senses’, are as likely as you seeing Punisher pirouetting in a pink tutu (apologises for any mild trauma that description might have caused). And in the case of Daredevil, if you were deluged in nuclear waste, the reaction with your cells will have you sooner floating to heaven than kicking Kingpin butt with the use of your echolocation powers.

That rules out radioactivity mutating cells to give people abilities that defy nature. Which leaves us with GENE MANIPULATION!

Now the legendary method of genetic engineering requires identifying and isolating the gene you want switched- using restriction enzymes, and then filling the vacant spot with the new gene. Sounds simple? Far from it. And then there’s rejection of the new gene to worry about… But it’s been proved to work in the making of a Frankenstein chicken! Alright, not exactly “Frankenstein” although I’d like the bolt of lightning scenario, it’s a lot more dramatic. But the chicken did have its moment, as scientists waited with bated breath, purple in the face and about to pass out– for a tweet. No, it wasn’t a geeky chicken that was ’social network’ savvy, it was a chicken with the vocal chords of a quail.

What’s brilliant about this method is that the switch is made at a very early embryonic stage. So all we need is a few eggs and sperm (of which there’s plenty), have them fertilized and allow the embryos to develop in a laboratory. Of course this is a bit of a trial and error method and we’re going to have quite a few anomalous and abominable looking animals before we create a chimp that can defy gravity and whiz through the air…

And this is the bit where I can’t seem to think of a way around that hulking nemesis ‘ethics’. Standing rigid with folded arms in our way it’s going to be tough but just think, “what if”? What if we had our very own clone army with super powers?

Of course there are more obstacles that stand in our way. The next problem hurled at us, is what will these superpowers be?

Sadly, choice is limited. Taking into consideration the forces in the laws of physics that keep our good planet Earth from floating aimlessly through the vast expanse of the cosmos, we are restricted to certain superpowers.

Here’s why (for convenience of reference let’s name our superhero Bandu), Bandu won’t be able to have Flash’s power to travel faster than the speed of light because E=m0/-1√v/c2!

According to a concept proposed by none other than the wire haired physicist, Einstein:

If an object is already travelling near the speed of light, it can’t move much faster, no matter how much energy it absorbs. Its momentum and energy continue to increase, but its speed approaches a constant value—the speed of light. This means that in relativity the momentum of an object cannot be a constant times the velocity, nor is the kinetic energy given by 1⁄2mv2.

So Bandu will just keep getting heavier as he runs a nice groove around the planet, deeper and deeper, until he finally hits magma! And Bandu is toast.

But what we can do is add on specific genes from other animals. Gills are a bit complex… but we could try. Webbed feet? Organutan arms? Think of the possibilities…

So if you’ve got any suggestions as to how this can be achieved ethically do feel free to share your ideas. I’ll be sure to credit you in my acceptance speech when I’m awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Every day I check the statistics on my blog. Just the total visitors. After all I am not a fanatic.

Much.

But occasionally I look at the other statistics WordPress provides. It is interesting (to me) to see what brings people to my blog.

So here are the ten most viewed articles on the archive over the past 30 days.

Pornography, Censorship and Art. Same old, Same old!

The Best Camel Toe Picture Ever Taken

Nude Gymnastics and Swimming

Second Best Camel Toe Picture Ever Taken

Shaving Her Beaver

Nine Inch Nails Meets Harry Potter

The Seven Dwarves

Blonde Chick with a Nice Pussy

What Is The Speed Of Light?

It is fascinating that top of the list is a serious article although I realise it has only gained popularity because Google decided to use the image of a young girl from that post as their top image for a search on “Bill Henson”.

I’m not sure just why an image lifted from “Looks Just Like” has jumped up into sixth spot or why three innocuous cartoons are in the list.

The entry which leaves me shaking my head is at number 10. Out of 3,399 posts on the archive (this is post No. 3,400) a serious – well, sort of - post on science rates this highly. It doesn’t seem to fit with the other nine which could be grouped as “Sex, Celebrity and Censorship”.
