And I thought I was at a serious cultural place. I thought this stuff was meant to matter, be above, be beyond, be untouched.

Each photograph we stand before leaves us with nothing but contrived emptiness. Yeah, how do you contrive emptiness? Not to worry, these people are on the ball. They can fill baths with emptiness. They can fill churches. Empty, enough for you?

And for something about pictures, it is all about words. There’s something wrong there.  There is skill, somewhere. But in each picture you see the lens. You can feel it there. And it’s exploiting. Them. You. Us. There’s no shared experience. Nothing is being said.

Empty.

There’s a dark architect. Five whales in speedos, bronzed. A goggle-eyed kid. And… well, you know I can’t remember! Just them stay out of what, 40? 50? More?

I used to think the National Photographic Portrait Prize meant something, acknolwedged something, was something.

wo schaut man hin? laut der durex-studie von 2004 ist der po weltweit das körperteil, welches die meisten blicke auf sich zieht. erkannt hat das die werbung ja schon länger und setzt entsprechendes bildmaterial, meist aus der frauenwelt, in den kampagnen ein.

schwieriger ist es dann schon, eine entsprechende erklärung dafür zu finden. da führt der bericht “schimpansen erkennen ihre artgenossen am po” über die studie des verhaltensforschers frans de waal etwas in die irre. die tiere müssen nämlich das entsprechende gesicht kennen, damit sie ihn am hintern erkennen können:

der berühmte schimpansenforscher frans de waal und seine kollegen zeigten den menschenaffen fotos von schimpansen-hintern inklusive geschlechtsteilen. kurz darauf sahen die tiere fotos von gesichtern mehrerer artgenossen. die versuchstiere konnten signifikant häufig den gesehenen po dem dazugehörigen affen zuordnen. die voraussetzung dafür was aber, dass die schimpansen die abgebildeten tiere auch persönlich kannten.

was also hat es dann mit dem blickpunkt po auf sich? eine these dazu geht davon aus, dass die fixierung auf das hinterteil noch auf die zeit zurückgeht, als sich unsere vorfahren noch auf vier beinen fortbewegten. durch diese körperhaltung war der po eine sexuelle reiz-zone, auf die wir uns scheinbar auch heute noch fixieren.

also ist es ganz klar: wenn du etwas mitteilen willst, schreib’ es auf deinen po: egal ob durch die werbebadehose oder auf andere weise.

und mit etwas geschick kann man sich noch ein nebeneinkommen verdienen. wie? ganz einfach: “werbefläche zu vermieten”

Now, I have missed the dust storm but this is too much to miss. Bondi got “flipped”…

Aparrently, this is a new surfing phenomenon which was started today and is called “Towel Surfing” !?!?!? According to the poster of the video below over 200 people joined in synchronous dance on their towels in a perfectly choreographed routine that amazed onlookers. Have a look:

1 2 3 breathe! That’s what I repeat to myself as I swim laps and am struggling for air.

Oh, I haven’t mentioned swimming before? That’s because it’s a new activity in our lives. John and I started swimming laps at the beginning of last week. Last night I swam 100m freestyle without stopping. That’s fairly decent progress for me during the past two weeks. Our first workout was 400m. Last night, we either did 600 or 650m. We lost count. I never thought I would enjoy swimming laps, but I do!

The pros to swimming:

• It’s low impact, so it doesn’t hurt my knees.
• Better yet, it does not hurt John’s knees. (If we haven’t mentioned before, he has pretty bad knees.) 
• Both John and I enjoy it, and it’s something we can do together.
• We don’t have to get drenched in sweat or endure extremely hot or cold outdoor temperatures to do the exercise.
• It’s a great whole body exercise that works cardio as well as many muscle groups.

Forseeable cons:

• The only downside that I can think of is the incredibly expensive pool membership fees. So far we haven’t gotten a pool membership and continue to pay the entrance fee (3 Euro each, or about $4.50). That won’t last long, though.

We also ordered some new swim gear last week. We’re waiting on new Speedo swim suits, goggles, ear plugs and swim caps for each of us. And guess what? We got all of that – including shipping – for $75! That’s a definite win in my book.
