so after 9 years of working for myself and out of the home (with a year or too of outside office time intermingled), i’ve moved my office outta the house to make room for our future baby. for the most part, i’ve been just fine with the transition. the new office building i’m planting myself in now, has a one restriction that i’m not too thrilled about – no Comcast, only Qwest for internet.

i probably wouldn’t have even realized that there was a significant difference between the too or even cared for that matter had i not had a minor issue this morning when i was setting up my new router. at the house, i’ve set up a media server for us to watch movies and stream content directly to our TV from Hulu.com and Netflix and so we have a pretty fast connection – and we love it! in fact we dropped cable TV because we can get all the content we want online!

when i started surfing my morning blogs and sites today after getting the router set up, i started really getting frustrated at the serious lack of performance. now, i realize that i’m a nerd and for most people it wouldn’t be a huge deal – but if i’m paying $80 a month for 7Mbps service, i expect that speed to come damn close! (as a side note, i hafta pay for business line here at the office where as i get residential service at the house at about half the price.)

anyway, so i call the wife and ask her to do a speedtest for me from her iMac so i could compare the too as well as arm myself with some information before i call tech support. to my surprise, not only was the connection higher at the house – it was WAY higher!

so trying not to sound angry when calling, i navigated my way through what seems like and endless Choose Your Own Adventure route in order to speak with a customer service rep at Qwest. she was very polite and after a couple of quick things we got it all sorted. the new speed was definitely higher and an acceptable percentage of what i was hoping to get based on the service agreement i signed.

but seeing the two numbers side by side made me really curious. why was that such a big difference in speeds? i tried to get some information out of the CSR but she couldn’t really offer much. not surprising – what company is going to really have a good answer for why their service is so much different from a competitors?!! now i’m not advocating for either company – frankly i think it’s all a scam – but sometimes, we just gotta deal with what what we’ve got…

so, i go on with my morning, sipping Stumptown from my new “We are happy to serve you” mug and land on Gizmodo and one of their current headlines reads:

This awesome infographic shows the internet costs and speeds around the world for the top 20 nations in the ITIF Broadband Rankings. Unsurprisingly, we don’t compare too well.

Number one is, predictably, Japan, where the average broadband speed is 60mbps and they pay $0.27 per 1mbps. We, in comparison, average 4.8mbps and pay $3.33 per 1mbps, putting us at #15. Be sure to click the above image to see it in its full glory. [Zach Klein]

i guess i never really thought about how expensive/cheap it is in other places. happy to know that we’re not at the very bottom of the list, but geeze – i think we could do better than #15. if the ISP and the technology nerds don’t get that price down, how will they ever expect Americans to move into this new future. i guess everything takes time… Japan seems to be doing alright, tho!

anyway, just a quick bitch… now back to work!

Yes indeed it has been a while since my last post. Was I too lazy to write something? Partly yes, partly no. I’m having quite a bit of technical problems with my internet connection these days. After having 3 mechanics failing to solve the problem and calling my internet provider Telenet about 10 times I’m losing faith. I will present this as some sort of case hoping that someone knows what to do.

So what’s the problem? Well it’s kind of a strange story actually. Since April last year I became a customer of Telenet. A Belgian internet provider with a monopoly when it comes to providing internet via the cable in Belgium. It’s quite an expensive internet provider but we really like their digital tv and the speed of the internet they provide. But about 3 weeks ago things started to go really wrong for me. Out of nowhere my internet totally slowed down without any reason but got back on speed by itself after some time. This happened a few times a day and made me believe that Telenet was having some temporary technical problems. But most of the time I still had internet at full speed. The following days the problem of this sort of fading internet still kept repeating itself. When having these problems my download could get 10x slower, my upload 20x slower and my ping could rise from about 20ms to about 3000-5000ms (yes really!). This high ping really makes visiting websites miserable. And now since a few days ago there are no more enjoyable periods where the internet works just fine so that makes me writing this while measuring a ping of 3873ms on http://www.speedtest.net/. My download seems to be fine at the moment but this is only temporary. I’ll get into more details with a timeline.

Timeline:

April 2009 – Became customer of Telenet

August 2009 – After a few days of slow internet I contacted Telenet via e-mail but magically the internet got normal again shortly afterwards. No idea if there is any connection.

End of November 2009 – The internet gets really really slow but I didn’t look into it because I thought I had downloaded too much which would have put me on small band. Afterwards this appeared to be a false assumption.

Begin of October 2009 – Starts with a few days with really slow internet followed by some good days.  The problem keeps coming back however making me think that there is a problem with my laptop. But then I notice something strange: my pc has the same problem at the same time! My laptop and my pc (with both another ‘cabled’ connection) get slow at the same time but also regain their speed at the same time. So this way I could exclude technical problems on my laptop / pc as the cause of the problem.

Middle of October 2009 – I called to the helpcentre of Telenet about 10 times. Each time I spoke to another person which made me explaining my problem as many times. Everyone had a slightly different approach when trying to help me but in the end it all came down to this: “ Can you try our speedtest sir and tell me the results?” I did this over and over again. But in the mean time a Mechanic from Telenet came to my house to fix the problem. He replaced my modem with a new one and also replaced the Switch. Because the problem was not present at the time he was at my house (my internet had a good moment…) he could only see perfect scores on all the tests that he did. Later that day however, when he was gone, my internet slowed down again for a long time. I also tried the speedtest when connecting my laptop directly with my modem. At first it seemed that there was no problem to be found here because I always seemed to get good results when doing this. But then on a day that I needed to download something and my internet was too slow to do the job I tried this trick again… but this time it didn’t work. So I even got bad download, upload and ping results when connected directly with my (new!) modem. When I reset the modem my internet will regain it’s speed but mostly that only lasts a minute or so. Sometimes this helps for a longer period tough. That’s why I called Telenet again (one of those 10 times…) and they send me once more a mechanic to solve the problem. He replaced the only devices from Telenet that weren’t replaced the first time. Again the mechanic could not see my problem because the internet was behaving normal when he was in my house. A day later I called Telenet again to report that the problem still existed which they could measure for the first time themselves at that time. They send me a mechanic from Infrax to check if the signals I received from outside my house were all right and to make sure no cables were broken. As you can guess everything turned out to completely normal according to Infrax. They even told me they had data for the last 2 months and could not see any abnormalities. So I called Telenet again (a couple of times) and now they are putting a special task force on the matter to solve ‘my case’. This task force is specialized in solving the weirdest cases and this appears to be such a case.

As you can see here the results got a lot worse in only 7 minutes time. I didn’t turn off my modem or anything so these numbers are measured without me interfering with my own network at all.

Just another proof of my slow internet. I measured about a 100 of these during the last 3 weeks.

Here you see the same problem as discribed above. In 4 minutes my ping rises from 22ms to 2664ms. Only to get back to back to normal values today while writing tis post.

So now my question for you: Does anyone have any idea what could cause this strange problem?

Oh and by the way. By the time I got to the end of this post my internet is back to normal again but that will probably not last for long I guess.

Caranya ketik REG HARIAN / REG MINGGUAN kirim ke 2255. setalah itu anda akan mendapat konfirmasi username, password dan nomor dial. INGAT ..!! apabila anda menggunakan username dan password biasanya yaitu telkomnet@flexi maka otomatis yang terpotong adalah pulsa reguler, walaupun register flexinet unlimited anda sudah ada konfirmasi berhasil.

Soal kecepatan, Payah….. untuk download cuma dapat 3 kbps dan langsung drop ke 1 kbps. Hasil speedtest dari speedtest.net nggak ada, lha gimana mau ngecek kecepatannya, untuk membuka halaman speedtest.net saja nggak bisa. Akhirya pake milik sijiwae.net/speedtest. Dengan hasil kecepatan 14 kbps. Buka facebook dan yahoo harus puas dengan versi mobile di m.fcebook.com / m.yahoo.com

Sebenarnya saya pertama langsung milih flexi karena berpikir bahwa itu milik PT. Telkom yang mana tentu jaringan dan layanannya pasti lebih bagus. Tapi ternayata flexinet nasibnya sama denga telkom flash yang banyak di cacimaki pelanggan. Mengenaskan nasib telkom ini.

saya menggunakan kartu smart yang ada gratisan satu gigi perbulan. Dengan hasil cukup lumayan. Lebih cepat dari flexi. Ohya maaf nggak bisa ngasih hasil speedtestnya, karena kartunya keburu di pinjam sama yang punya. Xixixixi.

Kartunya saya dapat ketika membeli usb modem cdma merk Speedup di HI Tech mall atau yang lebih terkenal dengan THR MALL surabaya dengan harga Rp.3.87.500,- pertama kali tidak saya daftarkan mobi unlimited, tapi pakai pulsa regular. Ternyata puas. Langsung cabut ke konter pulsa tetangga rumah beli pulsa fren 50 rb dan dapat pulsa tambahan 25 rb. Kalau dla brosurnya disebutkan 100 rb untuk internetan tiga bulan non stop. Cara daftarnya, ketik REG MAX50 SPEEDUP kirim ke 777 (ini sama persis seperti petunjuk dari brosurnya speedup) dan hanya berlaku untuk kartu fren sobat. Lalu akan dapat balasan konfirmasi tentang user name dan password nya. Dan sekali lagi awas…..! gunakan password dan username yang baru diberikan lewat sms jangan pakai m8.

percobaan ini didasarkan atas thread di kaskus yang ingin menunjukkan kecepatan koneksi dari internetnya. sebenarnya ga begitu tertarik sih. tapi jadi pengen tau, berapa ya speed test inet yang biasa aku gunakan. (baca :di kampus)

setelah masuk situs speedtest.net, akhirnya didapat juga hasil pengujian. FYI,pengujian dilakukan pada pukul 16.00, dimana kata administrator FTP UGM (kampusku), setelah pukul 16.00, koneksinya di loss kan. entah maksudnya gmn, tapi inilah hasilnya :

kok aneh ya??? download speed lebih lambat dari uploadnya.. hahaha….

dan ini pengujian pada pukul 16.06, dengan server jakarta.

I’ve lost track of the number of times ISPs have lied to us about the download speeds they offer us. Novice users can also get confused about the difference between Mbps, Kbps, MBps and KBps (for the record, Mbps is mega bits per second, and MBps with a capital B is mega bytes per second. Mega bits has a value eight times that of mega bytes per second).

Speedtest.net is a funky place to know your true speed. It calculates ping time(in milliseconds), upload speed and download speed (in Mbps).

Just visit the site, and wait till Speedtest.net automatically detects your nearest server. Click on the yellow pyramid to start the test. The coolest part of the test has to be the speedometer.

Also, something really great is that based on the download speed, you also have an idea about the time it will take to download a particular movie or song. Also, you can copy some direct links (to images) and forum links (for embedding) to boast about your download speeds, especially if you have an internet backbone connection (whoever’s got that, I envy you. Just wait till you see my download speed).

I just received a unit of Celcom Wireless Broadband today. An installation was OK even though none of the installation manual is provided. It’s simple and easy to setup. As FYI, this is 3.6Mbps aka RM98 package. 3.6Mbps is a best effort a telco can provide and at certain area where the network congestion is low, the speed capable of reaching that specific target. But as for now, only 0.49Mbps.

Gerek blogu kurma amacım gerek de kişiliğimden biraz uzacak ama bugün bunu anlamaya çalışırkenki izlenimlerimi de yazmak istedim.

Öncelikle bildiğiniz gibi temmuz itibariyle ülkemiz de (dünyada 121. olarak(acaba dünyada kaç cep telefonu olan ülke vardır? 121 mi?)) 3g teknolojisine geçti. Reklamlarda çok gösterilmemiş olsa da 3gnin asıl işi hızlı bağlantı-internet.

Ben de çok ihtiyaç duyacağımdan 3g destekli telefon ve 4gblik internet paketi ile 3gye geçmiş bulundum.; ancak bu iddialı teknolojinin de hızını merak ediyordum. Lafı uzatmayalım, bugün annemin evinde karşılaştırma fırsatı buldum. Rakamsal veriler için speedtest.net i kullandım, bunun dışında yazın belek-side ve antalya-konya-ankara güzergahı boyunca bağlanma çabalarım da bu teknolojinin kullanışlılığı konusunda beni bilgi sahibi etti.

Rakamsal verilerde 3g genel olarak 1,95-2,25 mbps (megabayt bölü saniye) hız(indirme hızı) veriyordu. yani 800 mblik bir filmi indirmek 45-50 dakka sürerdi.

ADSL ise(bildiğimiz 3gb kotalı ucuz türk telekom adsl) 1,8-1,9 mbps hızlar verdi. Aradaki fark 1gb lik dosyalar için 5-10 dk civarında, yani 45 dk ya da 55 dk bekliyorsunuz. Bu çok büyük bir fark değil bence ve bu yüzden karşılaştırmayı daha çok  kullanışlılığa göre yapmanın doğru olacağını düşündüm.

Kullandığım telefon bir PDA, yani bir cep bilgisayarı olan HTC TyTN II, ya da Kaiser. Turkcell’den alınmış ve Windows kullanıyor. VINN modeme ihtiyacım yoktu çünkü telefon da aynı işi görüyordu bu yüzden VINN almadım.

İLk kullanım yerim Antalya Belek’ti. Lüks golf otellerinin de yardımıyla iyi bir 3g bağlantısı alıyordum; ama en büyük sıkıntım, telefonun 3g olmasına rağmen bir anda edge’e geçip bana işkence etmesiydi. Bu durum özellikle Side’de can sıkıcı olmaya başladı ve sonunda internete girmekten vazgeçtim. Antalya-Konya-Ankara arasında dağlarda gitse de genellikle iyi bir bağlantı vardı ve pek sıkıntı çekmedim. Ankara’da ise kesintisiz 3g var.

Sonuca gelirsek 3g hem az daha hızlı, hem de her yerde az çok var. Size önerebileceğim 1gblik pakettir gene de.

Walaupun hasil yang tidak terlalu akurat, tetapi website http://www.speedtest.net sering dijadikan acuan untuk mengukur kinerja dari penyedia layanan Internet di Indonesia.

Sayangnya hasil yang diberikan dengan skala pengukuran megabits/second sehingga kadang membingungkan pengguna sehingga menimbulkan pertanyaan kenapa terdapat perbedaan yang cukup berarti antara hasil dari http://speedtest.net dengan saat pengguna sedang mengunduh berkas.

Sebenarnya hal itu cuma beda pada penggunaan satuaan saja jika saat melakukan speedtest di http://speedtest.net menggunakan megabits/second sedangkan saat mengunduh berkas menggunakan kilobytes/second.

Bagaimana supaya kita tidak bingung dan dapat tahu kecepatan nyata/real yang kita dapatkan saat mengunduh berkas dengan pengukuran melalu speedtest.net ? Caranya gampang saja, cukup ubah satuan pengukuran saat menggunakan speedtest.net. Caranya :

1. Buka http://speedtest.net, klik setting

2. Lakukan perubahan pada speed measurement di konfigurasi setting tersebut, pilih kilobytes agar sama dengan kecepatan yang digunakan saat mengunduh.

3. Setelah diubah jangan lupa klik save untuk menyimpan perubahan yang kita lakukan.

It’s difficult to find sites that are capable of truly testing high speed Internet connections.  Speedtest.net is de facto for tests in this area of the US, but test results are often finickly.  There’s a whole slew of problems with this service: 1> web servers were designed to serve, not receive; 2> the host provider may be an ISP that’s oversold; 3> you may be testing during the ISP’s peak time; 4> the testing server may not be tweaked for high TCP performance.

So, I’ve been using Internet2’s list of NDT servers that use the customized Web100 kernel which been tweaked for 100Mbps+ throughput.  When your system is tweaked properly, you’ll find much more accurate results than what you’ll see from Speedtest.net’s servers.

Below is the result of a test from a Windows 2008 R2 RC box with tweaked TCP parameters for high throughput:

PS – FWIW, Verizon has built their speed test site using the same userland client as the Internet2 NDT servers, but I’ve always had trouble getting upload to scale beyond 4Mbps on a Windows box no matter how it’s tweaked.  YMMV

Hola amig@s, hoy en Twitter, Twittee una app para ver la velocidad de nuestra conexión 3G. Pero en esta primera ocasión realice el test con una App que se llama Speed Check, la cual solo comprueba la velocidad de Descarga y no la de Subida.

Después la Twittera @Irarle, comento que si sabíamos de alguna App que ademas de la velocidad de Descarga (download) midiese también la de subida (upload).

Pues mirando de nuevo por la AppStore encontré esta nueva App que cumple esos dos requisitos. Medir la velocidad de subida y Descarga.

La App es SpeedTest.net y esta desarrollada por la compañía Ookla.

Una de las opciones que me a gustado de SpeedTest es el poder seleccionar la distancia del servidor, esto esta bien para comparar resultados.

Ademas de esta opción puedes configurara desde SETTING el modo en que quieres ver los resultados por Kbits o Mbits:

This cost me about MYR17 to do this speed test. By the way this is DiGi EDGE. Download speed is 14.65kB/s while Upload speed is 6.1kB/s.

Just moved house and got the internet connection going. My router mustn’t be ADSL2 capable like I thought, but at least we’re running at the max speed for ADSL1:

ทีนี้ซื้อมายังไม่ได้ลองประสิทธิภาพของ aircard เลยว่ารองรับเครือข่าย 3G ได้ดีแค่ไหน พอ Dtac หมด 6 เดือนเลยคิดว่าจะลอง truemove ดูบ้าง ด้วย EDGE/GPRS unlimited package เหมาจ่าย 250 บาท (รวม vat แล้ว 267.50 บาท) จัดการซื้อซิมว้าว truemove มาในราคา 10 บาท โดยมีโบนัสค่าโทร 5 บาท พร้อมกับใช้งานได้ถึง 21/07/2552 หลังจากศึกษาเรื่องการเติมเงินแล้ว ตัดสินใจว่าจะเติมเงินผ่านตู้ ATM โดยเติมครั้งละ 90 บาท ทั้งหมด 3 ครั้ง เป็นจำนวนเงิน 270 บาท ได้วันเพิ่มอีก 27 วัน ใช้งานได้ถึง 17/08/2552 นั่นเอง

31/07/2552 ด้วยความไม่รู้ ก็เลยโทรไปสมัครแพ็คเกจ EDGE/GPRS เลยที่เบอร์ *9000 กด 2 กด 1 แล้วกด 1 อีกครั้งเพื่อยืนยัน อ้าว!!! บ๊ะแล้ว ลืมโทรไปสมัครเปิดใช้บริการ GPRS ก่อนที่เบอร์ 9779 ทำไงดีหว่า??? ก็เลยโทรไปเปิดบริการ แล้วทีนี้ไอ้ที่เราไปสมัครแพ็คเกจนี่มันก็ส่ง sms กลับมาประมาณว่า เรายังไม่ได้เปิดใช้บริการ GPRS ให้โทรไปที่ 9779 ก่อน จนสามารถใช้งาน GPRS ได้แล้วค่อยโทรกลับมาสมัครแพ็คเกจใหม่ ทำไปทำมาเกือบสิบรอบ มันก็ sms มานะว่าเราเปิดใช้บริการได้แล้ว แต่มันก็ยังไม่ให้สมัครอยู่ดี จนหมดปัญญา กะว่าจะโทรไปถาม 1331 ว่าทำไมสมัครไม่ได้…

จนวันรุ่งขึ้น 01/08/2552 มาลองสมัครอีกที ทำตามขั้นตอน ที่นี่ อีกครั้งแล้วโทรไปที่ *9000 ก็สมัครได้สำเร็จซะที (สงสัยครั้งแรกระบบมันจะรวน) เช็คยอดเงินเหลือแค่ 6 บาท 43 สตางค์เอง เอาหล่ะ…ทีนี้คงจะเล่นได้ซะที ก็ลองต่อจาก aircard ทันที  (เคยสำรวจสัญญาณแล้วในห้องทำงานชั้น 3 สำนักงานใหญ่ของธนาคารย่านสีลม connect ได้แค่ EDGE  ถ้าจะรับสัญญาณจากเครือข่าย HSUPA ได้ต้องออกไปด้านนอกเท่านั้น) ก็ไม่ได้คาดหวังจาก EDGE ของ truemove สักเท่าไหร่ เพราะได้ยินเค้าบ่นกัน แต่พอเจอกับตัวเอง truemove มันช่างห้วยจริง ๆ ถ้า truemove สามารถปรับปรุงให้มันเร็วกว่านี้จะดีมากครับ ผลทดสอบความเร็ว EDGE by truemove ตามรูปเลยครับ

ส่วน 3G by truemove นั้นความเร็วถึงว่าไม่ได้ดีมากนัก ทดสอบความเร็ว download ประมาณ 1.5Mbps แต่เวลา download จริงความเร็วจะ swing มาก ซึ่ง average อาจจะไม่ถึง 1Mbps ก็ได้ (ใน EDGE ความเร็วก็ขึ้น ๆ ลง ๆ เหมือนกันครับ) ส่วนความเร็ว upload นี่ถือว่าทำให้ประหลาดใจพอสมควร เพราะเห็นบางคนทดสอบได้น้อยมากประมาณไม่ถึง 100kbps เอง

การทดสอบด้วยการโหลดบิต ได้ความเร็วประมาณ 200-237 kB/s ซึ่งค่อนข้างสูงมาก เทียบกับที่บ้าน net 2M ของ TOT ยังโหลดได้แค่ 15x kB/s เอง นับว่าเป็นสิ่งที่ทำให้ประหลาดใจอีกอย่างนึง

ส่วนตัวคิดว่า 3G ของ truemove ยังไม่นิ่งเท่าไหร่ แต่กับราคาเท่านี้ที่เค้าให้ใช้ฟรีรวมกับ EDGE/GPRS ก็ถือว่าโอมั่ก ๆ แล้วครับ
