Quick intro: So we’ve done 100 years of fashion at uni, and now on Monday 3oth November 2009 we have to dress up. We’ve all been given a decade- and as you may have guessed from the title- I’ve been given the 90s. (For the record I’m going grunge) Was hoping of the 70s but oh well, here goes; I hope I do it justice.

 First let’s get the ego part out my system; the best thing about the 90s was me being born in the middle of 1990. I know being a 90s child I should like it, but I don’t. I look back on photos and wonder what on earth I was thinking.

The best fashion moments from this decade are hard to pick and I only have to choose three. It was all about minimising and looking back. There where so many different trends, it really was the start of being an individual. I managed to pick three though and those are: Grunge, Brit Pop and Punk. It’s my blog therefore I can choose what to write on, you may think about hip-hop, the start of sports wear as fashion and all those other things, but I don’t. I shudder at the memory of jelly shoes and a union jack dress and I still feel track suits should be for the gym and that showing off your stomach for your holidays.

Grunge was really a less political version of punk. Charity shop buys was the way forward. Like punk it was a lifestyle not just a fashion and I think that is what draws me to all three. You’re not just making fashion choices, your making a lifestyle statement. The effortless, comfortable feel makes this one of the best things about the 90s. Mixing a floral dress with a men’s baggy checked flannel shirt, add Converse on the bottom and you where dressed. Music came along and joined with bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Who needed the hype of the Take That and dare I say it, the Spice Girls?

Brit-pop or a cheaper Mod you make the decision. Like grunge this had a music scene. Bands like Oasis, Blur and Pulp bought Brit-pop to the mainstream. If you look at photos of Mod’s then look at a photo of Brit-pop don’t you see something similar? Smart straight leg jeans, short jackets, baby t’s and a pair of Chelsea boots. Seriously if you add the scooter and a parker you’d get a Mod. Looking back and changing it to fit the current time really get’s proven here.

Skip to the late 90s and we start to see punk emerging. Admittedly not 70s punk, there was nothing political about it. It was just youths dying and spiking their hair, adorning themselves with body piercings, band t-shirts and black jeans. Both sexes would wear black make-up, bringing back the ‘goth’ look.  Compare this to today’s fashion and I think we call it emo.

Como buen fan, el que tuvo retuvo, y aunque pasen los años y uno ya esté mas cerca de la treintena que un suspirico, dentro de mi sigue habiendo resquicios del adolescente fanático que antaño fuí.

Mi casa está encasillada en rojo, negro y blanco. Algún resquicio se escapa del circulo vicioso en el que yo mismo me he metido, pero es complicado salirse de los tonos. Pero a partir de poco (cuando consiga agenciarme un super taladro) mis paredes van a estar adornadas por lo que hace unos doce años decoraron éstas mismas paredes.

Individuo las Vegas, allá por diciembre de 2007, tras asistir al concierto que siempre deseé asistir y nunca pude, aparecio con un super poster que me había comprado para que recordara ese día. El concierto era de Spice Girls. Después de diez años esperando el concierto, pude ir a Madrid y ver de nuevo juntas y probablemente por última vez (quien sabe), a las que en su día hicieron que empapelara mi habitación. Dentro de poco, un nuevo “cuadro” colgará de nuevo en la que en aquel entonces era mi habitación. El poster ahora está customizado, metido bajo un cristal, con la entrada de aquel día, y con los recuerdos de aquel fin de semana. Por cierto, gracias Las Vegas.

Años después y siguiendo la racha de conciertos, hice las maletas y me fuí a París a otro concierto, y ésta vez por partida doble. Madonna aterrizaba en París, e Individuo Castro y yo tambien. Ésta vez fui yo mismo el que como recuerdo de aquellas dos noches increibles y acordandome de mi pared vacía, me compré un nuevo poster de aquella gira. La cosa no quedó solo en esos dos conciertos, ya que al año siguiente, Las Vegas y un menda, nos liamos la manta a la cabeza y terminamos en Zaragoza viendo de nuevo ese mismo concierto. Tres conciertos, tres entradas y un poster que después de haber sufrido alguna modificación, pasará a formar parte de esa pared de mi cuarto rojo.

Una pared que me recuerda que he estado horas y horas haciendo colas en las puertas de estadios de futbol, plazas de toros, etc. Horas de sufrimiento hasta casi el desmayo y hacerme pis encima en el concierto de Spice Girls en Madrid debido a la mala organización en la entrada. Horas de risas y nuevas amistades en la cola de París mientras Castro volvía al hotel porque se olvidó la entrada en la habitación.

De estos dos tengo recuerdos a modo de nueva decoración. De otros como el de Christina Aguilera en Barcelona, o el de Shakira en Pamplona, solo quedan recuerdos en mi cabeza. Igual de horas esperando, y con la misma ilusión en cada uno de ellos.

Bueno, no, por supuesto muchísimo mas en Spice. Siempre seré un Spice Boy. Soy así, el que me conoce lo sabe, y creo que a estas alturas ya no cambiaré. El niño-chico-adolescente-joven-casi treintañero, sigue siendo un fan, y ahora tengo cosas en casa que lo atestiguan.

Uma noite mágica cheia de emoções fortes!! Tocar depois do Bonde do Rolê foi uma experiencia única. Nunca tive um publico tão enlouquecido!!! Espero ter conseguido passar na gravação o que senti no momento de tocar!!

Kirjoitukseni bnth-osuuden aion kuitata lyhyesti. Eilen olivat kansantaloustieteilijöiden vuosijuhlien (50 wee, TERVE) jatkot ja varmaan jotkut juhlatkin ennen sitä. Omissa silmissäni bileet tosin alkavat vasta kotkien laskeuduttua tanssilattialle. Kotkaedustamassa eilen olivat Antsa sekä allekirjoittanut (en oikeasti allekirjoita näitä postauksia), Lede oli mummolassa.

Juhlat olivat Pohjanhovissa enkä ole koskaan tanssinut yhtä paljon. Itse asiassa olen niin väsynyt, etten raportoi tapahtumia enempää. Voin kuitenkin vakuuttaa, että urpoilurimaani on nostettu taas hieman! Ja urpoilulla KOTKA MEININGISSÄ tarkoitetaan isoa linjaa sekä hauskoja juttuja. Jatkot olivat “Minä sain tunteen” -Emmillä, joka asuu jatkostrategisesti kiusallisen keskeisellä paikalla.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a short story for an academic scholarship prize. It made the short list, and the short list was then sent to Ian Rankin to decide a winner. I didn’t win, but I remain immensely proud that my weak attempt at fiction has been read by one of the UK’s top authors. So here it is:

The rise of

COSMIC GRAFFITI

Joe strummed lazily at his Gibson before trying out a few chords then the first few bars of Smoke on the Water. He was vaguely aware of the indistinct chatter of the 3 other members of Cosmic Graffiti behind him. He yawned, stretching out as far back as the cold plastic chair would allow. Joe hated these uncomfortable chairs, they reminded him of school. He looked around him. The room, apart from the three other members of the band and the hall’s caretaker, was empty.

John, the bassist, approached him tentatively knowing how bad a mood Joe would be in by now. The rubber of his trainers squeaked loudly on the varnished wood of the floor and the sound echoed around the desolate hall.

“’Mon mate, no one has shown up so far and I doubt they will now”

“Just five more minutes” Joe snapped “plenty of folk could still come and we’d be halfway to dismantling the rig, how would that look?”

“We’ve been here for two hours now as it is. If anyone was coming they’d be here already” John reasoned.

Joe gave a theatrical sigh and heaved his considerable frame from the seat. It creaked in protest. He ambled towards his amplifier, muttering oaths under his breath.

This was bad; this was the third gig in four weeks where no one had turned up. Last week, three old dears sat through the entire first set before asking, what had happened to the flower arranging class? Turns out they had come a week early and they went away grumbling about how they had wasted almost an entire hour of their night.

Like it mattered Joe thought to himself. What were they going to do instead? Sit in their own piss, surrounded by cats and watching crap TV game shows while smoking endless El Cheapo fags?

Joe’s disgust for the elderly stemmed from his own fear of growing old. He might be on the wrong side of 45 but he liked to think of himself as young and trendy. He still sported the same long hair as he had as a teenager, even if it was thinning a bit on top, and he could still fit in the same pair of jeans that he bought in 1974, that is if he left the button and fly undone. He still liked the same music too, which was why he had formed the band from a selection of old school friends. He didn’t think they were that bad but obviously the general public disagreed.

Joe made to remove his guitar lead from the amp. As his fingers closed round the end he knew something was wrong. His arms and hands spasmed and his fist clenched up on the maple neck of the guitar. He felt an excruciating pulling sensation that made him feel as if the back of his head was coming off and he was shaking violently. It felt as though some one had tried to ram a knitting needle up each nostril straight into his brain, without anaesthetic. It seemed to last an eternity, and then it was over. Joe was lying on his back, the faces of John, Jim and Jack swimming languidly in and out of focus. They were yelling something; Joe caught the word “ambulance”. He opened his mouth to say he didn’t need one but no sound came out. “Stop making such a fuss”, he thought grumpily. To his astonishment everyone started to ignore him and went back to dismantling their kit. Not only did that annoy Joe, it unnerved him as well; they had all done exactly as he had wanted them to do at the exact moment he had thought it.

“Coincidence. It must be.” he thought, but then they had left him on his own after a serious electric shock which is not something most sane people would do. Joe picked himself up, dusting himself off and feeling the sparks and hearing the crackle of static electricity under his fingertips as he did so. That would be excellent; if he really could influence other people and their actions. “World Domination, here we’d come! Wayhey.” he mused, “onward and upward, we’d all have it made.”

Cosmic Graffiti would rival The Spice Girls and Take That in the popularity stakes if Joe were to have his way, every gig would be sold out with touts reselling the tickets to the numptie who would pay the most. He mentally listed what he would put on his hospitality rider and started imagining a queue of birds a mile long waiting outside his dressing room. Good looking ones mind, absolutely no mingers allowed.

Joe indulged in his fantasy for a while; he was in no hurry to help with lifting the heavy gear out to the band’s waiting van but, eventually, he decided he’d better help out or, shock or no shock, there’d be hell to pay and to be frank he couldn’t really be arsed with that.

He began lugging his amp outside, wishing in the process that it had wheels, and huffed and puffed his way to the van. Jack was loading his last high hat into the back. He slammed the van door and made his way back towards the hall, ignoring Joe in the process. Joe was too red in the face to protest but he swore mentally. “You git! Open the bloody door again, or is that too much to ask”, he muttered. Jack suddenly did a pirouette that would have shamed even the most proficient Prima ballerina and rushed to the van door, holding it open like some sort of butler/hobo doorman. Joe grunted in acknowledgement and thanks while at the same time feeling rather scared. Twice, that was twice other people had done what he wanted them to do!

He had to make sure if his hunch was right. Across the road, he spotted an old biddy walking one of these awful shoe-brush style dogs they seem to adore so much, the ones done up with ribbons in their over-long, ratty fur. This was his chance; the woman had to be in her eighties at least. He watched as the woman picked up her dog, her handbag swinging wildly from her elbow, and drop kicked the mangy furball over the trees.

“Three points” thought Joe, a slow and evil smile creeping across his face; this was going to be fun.

• Depuis quelques jours, j’écoute en boucle le dernier titre de Lady Gaga, Bad Romance. Si vous lisez ce blog depuis ses débuts, vous savez déjà que Lady Gaga est mon ennemie, et que rien ne me fait tant jubiler que de taper sur cette créature contrefaite et scandaleusement convenue. Et pour son nouveau single, la dinde a mis le paquet: production apocalyptique, vocodeur déréglé, grognements de truie, onomatopées consternantes (Gaga Oulala?), et, forcément, clip destiné a faire tourner de l’oeil même les drag-queens les plus exigeantes. Mais allez savoir pourquoi, ce morceau dégoulinant de nullité me réjouit complètement, et je l’écoute à m’en faire péter les tympans à toute heure du jour et de la nuit, à mon grand désespoir.
• Sur ma photo de profil Facebook, je suis sur un bateau, avec la mer derrière, les cheveux au vent, juste à côté d’un mec canon. Le prototype de la photo pathétique qui signifie regardez-comme-ma-vie-est-géniale-enviez-moi-s’il-vous-plaît-moi-et-mon-bonheur-tellement-parfait-que-je-n’ai-rien-d’autre-à-foutre-que-de-le-mettre-en-scène-pour-350-connards-dont-j’ai-à-peu-près-rien-à-foutre-et-qui-me-le-rendent-bien.
• J’ai vu Batman Forever 6 fois au cinéma. Oui, celui avec Jim Carrey. Et là, vous vous dites, ça aurait pu être pire. C’est mauvais, mais il aurait pu voir six fois Batman & Robin, le film le plus mauvais, le plus ridicule, le plus abyssal de tous les temps. Celui avec Geogre Clooney en Batman et Arnold Schwarzenegger en Mr. Freeze. Ah oui, et aussi Alicia Silverstone en Batgirl. Et bien, euh, comment dire… Je l’ai vu six fois aussi. Oui oui, six fois au cinéma. Voilà, c’est dit. Pour ma défense, je me suis beaucoup repenti.
• La chanson la plus écoutée de ma bibliothèque iTunes est Viva La Vida, de Coldplay. Je suis incapable d’expliquer ma passion pour cette hymne emphatique noyé dans un torrent de cordes gluantes, chanté mollement par l’endive braisée qui sert de mari à Gwyneth Paltrow. J’ai essayé de me rassurer en me rappelant à moi-même que le titre à été co-produit par Brian Eno, mais il me faut regarder les choses en face: j’ai écouté des centaines de fois cette année une chanson écrite par un type qui a appelé sa fille Apple. Et j’ai aimé ça.
• Je n’ai jamais vu King Kong. Le vrai, celui de 1933. Ce qui admettons-le, pour un cinéphile, craint. Et si j’ajoute que je n’ai jamais rien vu d’Eisenstein, de Tarkovski, et d’Ozu, là, je perds toute ma crédibilité. D’autant que Voyage à Tokyo attend patiemment sur une de mes étagères depuis quelques années.
• J’ai assisté à un concert de Spice Girls. Certes, j’étais invité, mais j’étais tout de même ravi d’y aller. J’avais d’ailleurs, à l’époque de mon adolescence, une grande passion pour les cinq pintades peinturlurées, et je peux même me targuer d’avoir vu leur “film” au cinéma. Z’avez vu, quand je m’auto-balance, je fais pas semblant.
• J’aime bien écouter Mika. Non pas que je n’ai pas envie de le gifler, avec sa voix de crécelle, ses tenues qui font mal aux yeux et sa gestuelle de lombric hyperactif, mais j’ai acheté son premier album. Oui, acheté physiquement avec de l’argent dans un magasin. C’est dire. Et le pire, c’est que je ne me suis pas arrêté là: il y a quelques jour, j’ai même été jusqu’à télécharger quelques titres de son nouveau. Très plouc, mais un grand bonheur à écouter sous la douche. Etrangement, Mika et le bruit de l’eau vont très bien ensemble. Entre parenthèses, j’aurais un peu moins honte d’apprécier ses sucrettes musicales s’il arrêtait de noyer le poisson sur sa sexualité avec des déclarations bande-mou du genre “Je ne me suis jamais imposé de limite dans ma vie, je n’ai jamais mis de restriction sur les personnes avec qui je couche… Alors je ne sais pas. Appelez-moi comme vous voulez. Appelez-moi bisexuel si vous avez besoin d’un terme pour moi… C’est l’étiquette dont je pourrais être le plus proche.” Parce que, sans déconner, quand on fait des clips qui ressemblent à ÇA, pourquoi faire sa mijaurée en interview?
• Je connais tous les James Bond par coeur. Même Moonraker. Aimer les premiers avec Sean Connery, cela va de soi. Aimer les derniers grâce à Daniel Craig, c’est la nouvelle tendance. Aimer l’unique essai de George Lazenby, c’est un mini-snobisme. Mais aimer Roger Moore, Thimothy Dalton et MÊME Pierce Brosnan, c’est de l’inconscience. Et c’est dans cet aveuglement que je me suis vautré toute ma vie. Les blagues salaces et pas drôles, le racisme abject de Vivre et Laisser Mourir, la doublure omniprésente de Papi Roger Moore et son lifting dans Dangereusement Votre, la voiture invisible de Meurs un autre jour, même SOPHIE MARCEAU dans Le Monde ne suffit pas, avec son air affecté et son oreille arrachée, j’arrive à la trouver sublime! PRIEZ POUR MON AME!

another dwindled dawn

I want you to like it because, let’s be honest, I crave attention and validation. Plus I keep drawing all these tiny pictures that mean weird stuff to me and I’ve got to do something with them. I’m going to try to update every day. This should be eeeee-zay.

So this sickness I’ve been fighting off has been really courteous and has allowed me to feel only marginally ill on very brief occasion at night instead of making me actually sick so that I miss work or whatever. But I think it’s maxed out its agreeability because my nose is just not cooperating.

But the point to blogging today? Music. I had to do a little overhaul on my iPod because there was some unseemly stuff on there and while I did I actually got a look at what was going on. I almost always listen to it on shuffle, but I think there is a method to the iPod madness because the same songs from albums come up (always fucking “House of Wolves”–WHY???).

I have loved some really shitty music. Well, actually, it’s not shitty, but most people would think so and that’s fine because, since it’s an art form, it’s subjective anyway. We might all agree, though, there isn’t a whole lot of substance to, say, a Spice Girl’s song, but that kind of music really shaped who I am now, so it still affects me when I hear it. All that poppy music in the form of girl bands and female solo acts, they are the driving force behind my feminism now. That’s completely crazy, isn’t it? It’s laughable. But to a ten year old who was really looking for something to identify with, the Spice Girls offered me something that no other thing could ever replace. Okay, laugh, it’s fine. I’ll stand by that, though, til I die.

(Those girl groups are also the reason why I squeak when I sing loudly or quickly because I’m an imitator, I have no sound of my own, and they all did that…ugh.)

The Spice Girls taught me “girl power.” And they said it in British accents so it made the concept even more believable and desirable. Now when I listen to their songs I kind of hear it in their lyrics through this insane, take-charge sexual stance. Not that it’s insane to take charge, but it was kind of insane that those lyrics were marketed to preteens. But however prepackaged or inappropriate their image was, and however superficially they presented the girl power concept, to the girl I was then, seeing the relationships that I did in my real life, it was the entire world. It was something greater than I thought I could ever hope to be. Something to really aspire to. There are plenty of women in America who are very unmoved by feminist sentiment which is understandable because we’ve got it pretty good compared to the rest of the world (and we’re blind to the rest of the world to boot) or we’ve been led to believe that “feminist” is code for “bitch” and that inequality doesn’t exist in this country because there are words in some document that say so. Sometimes I think that, without the Spice Girls, I would be like this too. Which is kind of nuts. And pretty sweet.

I hope this wasn’t true for just me, but even if it was, it’s still sweet.

And it’s also sweet because it led me to this other music that was feminist like TLC. When Lisa Lopes died that was the first time I ever was affected by the death of a celebrity. And the last. I know, it’s really odd to feel for someone dying that you didn’t know, but her life was tumultuous and I always felt the anger in her lyrics even if I couldn’t understand the racial or economic concepts behind them, so when she died, I don’t know. I was 15. I don’t know, but I mean, geez, she wore a condom as an eye patch! Who can’t love that? And my left eye is lazy and too small and her left eye is too big. It’s kind of nuts.

Anyway, the point is, I love music. I know that doesn’t seem like the point of this post, but it was supposed to be. But more on that some other day when I don’t have work the next morning…which is pretty much everyday.

Actually, I think the bigger point is that the Spice Girls told me I could be and do anything that I wanted to be–anything at all–and I believed them.  And I still do.

This idea just sprung to my mind when I was staring at the TED logo and I immediately started to collect all the logos/icons which somehow had an influence on my life (at least for one year), be it a commercial brand, an institution, a tv series, a band, a software or a website. I spent a whole day searching, scanning, editing, sometimes recreating these things, and it was a strange experience full of surprises and nostalgia. It made me smile when I saw the chronological connections between some icons that I had not thought of before.

The final surprise to me was to see how good icons are at defining a person, and I’m not talking blunt capitalism here (the piece on its own takes care of that job plainly without any need for my blabbers). For one thing, just the commercial products wouldn’t be enough. And although I am fully aware of a more interesting definition of capitalism which includes all the modern mythologies from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Harry Potter, I think that there are icons there that you still can’t fit in that definition and without which this piece wouldn’t be strong enough; strong enough to make me want to look at this thing for hours like a vain girl looking at a mirror – this may sound weird, but you probably would understand what I feel if you were to look at your own version of this. It is also worth noting that towards 2009 appear some items that I myself created as a designer, which in turn started to define me – like the icon of my band or the logo of our design collective Fevkalade.

Some of the old items – like Cicibebe, Nutella or Remeron – are still wholly present in my life, by the way. I placed those things according to where they first made appearance. There are some old items I’m still looking for, so this is not the final version. I also plan to update it as years go by.

Increíble, pero cierto. El gobierno británico quiere convencer a las chicas picantes para ser las estrellas principales en la inauguración de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres del año 2012.

Simon Fuller, ex manager de las Spice Girls, aseguró al diario que el grupo cantaría en la fiesta de apertura: “Tienen un lugar en la historia de la música británica y no puedo pensar en una mejor oportunidad para ellas de reunirse”.

Nadie lo puede negar. Las chicas picantes fueron todo un fenómeno entre los jóvenes hace ya unos cuantos años. Sin embargo, cuando las chicas del “Wannabe” comenzaban a hacerse notar dentro de su mundo, el príncipe Carlos de Inglaterra pidió a los jóvenes británicos que retardaran su primera relación sexual, ¿alguien le hizo caso?.

No lo sé, pero desde luego el mismo príncipe Carlos se vio anonadado por las cinco chicas. Guapas, simpáticas y extrovertidas llegaron a tomar el té por invitación del propio príncipe de Inglaterra e, incluso, en una ocasión se entrevistaron con el ex presidente de Suráfrica Nelson Mandela.

Así que no es de extrañar que el mundo británico quiera volver a contar con ellas para sus juegos olímpicos. Sin embargo, las Spice Girls todavía tienen un poco de sentido común y aún no están muy convencidas sobre si reunirse en el evento. Es lógico, no quieren verse sobre un escenario cantando canciones de adolescentes cuando todas han entrado ya en una edad madura.

Sin embargo, el ex-manager afirma que verán como se puede lograr actuar en los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012 sin hacer el ridículo para contentar a todos los que piden su vuelta.

Espera, ¿verán como se puede lograr?… ¿y no hay grupos británicos de alta relevancia que hay que intentar convencerlas? ¿dónde está el brit pop? ¿porqué no intentan que Oasis se vuelva a juntar para el evento? ¿qué fue de Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Blur y del largo etcétera de grupos británicos?

Okay it’s time to let loose tonight, I’ve been working my butt off these past two weeks, writing up a storm and I still have 2,000 more words to go.

I’m going to listen to some music to get my body feeling groovy, then I’ll tap into that imagination of mine and come up with an ending for my 50,000 word count novel for Nanowrimo called The Calamity Girl!

I’ve also created a separate website for The Calamity Girl on WordPress and two sites on Squidoo.

I’m having fun creating my new characters, plots and settings.

So I decided to play the music I used to dance to in the bars about 10 years ago, when I was single, a cougar and out on the prowl.

This will give me some inspiration to write my CHIC LIT.

There are all kinds of rumors flying around after the Spice Girls Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, and Melanie Chisholm had dinner last week. The theory is that another reunion is in the works, and more and more that seems to be accurate.

Recently, Geri was on a British talk show and confirmed that the girls were chatting about some “future plans”.

Now Mel B. has Tweeted about the rumors, confirming them!!!!

She says:

“World cup! wow the press are soo silly no I am not getting the girls together for the world cup!!! We are getting together for other reasons!”

What reasons?! Don’t leave us hanging like that!!!

If it is another tour, they need to hurry up and do it!

Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell et Melanie C ont attisé les rumeurs de leur réunion lorsque quatre des cinq membres de la troupe ont partagé un souper dans un restaurant de Londres, le 21 septembre dernier.

Au lendemain de leur rencontre qui devait demeurer secrète, Geri Halliwell racontait à un animateur d’une émission britannique qu’elle et ses acolytes étaient toujours à la recherche de projets artistiques intéressants: «Pour l’instant, nous échangeons des idées pour une possible réunion, mais nous ne voulons pas partager la nouvelle avec le monde entier jusqu’à ce que nos plans se concrétisent…»

Plusieurs rumeurs avaient alors émergé racontant que les filles allaient donner une prestation lors du match final de la Coupe du monde de soccer qui se déroulera en Afrique du Sud, en juillet prochain.

Mercredi matin, Mel B s’est chargée de mettre les pendules à l’heure sur sa page Twitter: «Wow les rumeurs se propagent vite! Nous n’irons pas à la Coupe du monde. Il y aura bel et bien une réunion, mais pour une tout autre occasion!»

Les membres des Spice Girls ont interrompu leur dernière tournée mondiale en février 2008 en expliquant que des engagements familiaux les empêchaient de se rendre à Pékin, Hong Kong, Sydney, Cape Town et Buenos Aires, comme prévu à leur calendrier de spectacles.

Des sources proches des chanteuses me racontent qu’elles débuteront bel et bien une toute nouvelle série de spectacles dans les villes où elles ont manqué leur dernier rendez-vous, et ce, dès juin 2010.

Music is probably the most important thing in my life, has been for years. Some may think it’s a bit silly but everyone’s different. Theatre is the most important thing to some people, film is the same with others. It really just depends what you’re into & what can give value to you like nothing else.

This leads to associating specific songs or genres with moments & events that have happened in your life. A few examples, displayed in a convenient timeline:

1997 : Wannabe by the Spice Girls.

- This song was really popular in 1997 & it’s when girls my age first learned about what it is to be a “girl”. If you wannabe my lover, you gotta get with my friends. Sparkles & skirts & boob tubes followed by impromptu lip syncing performances in front of my peers. Yep. Great childhood right there.

2000 : Daphne & Celeste

- Don’t even remember the songs they sung BUT I remember a friend’s birthday party where someone bought her the cd & she played it & everyone sung along. Another girly group talking about what it means to be a girl but more about looks. OH! I just remembered. U.G.L.Y. God, what a horrible song.

2005 : 48May/My Chemical Romance

- Emo/pop punk phase. Obsession with tattoos & piercings began. Frank Iero. ‘Nuff said.

2007 : Umbrella by Rihanna

- Basically, this song was the song of my final year at high school. Everyone loved this song & sung it all the time. We played it on repeat in Media Studies. We all bonded because of it. Cheesy, but fantastic memories.

2008 : Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon
– First year of uni/2008 in general. Plus it was the biggest song of the year & everyone loved it.

2009 :
a) 808s & Heartbreak by Kanye West

- I was extremely depressed for about two months & this album was all I listened to. I can’t really listen to some tracks off it anymore because it brings too much of the emotions back about that period of my life. Songs like Say You Will, Street Lights & Bad News are REALLY quite truly ‘bad news’ to me. I can handle Paranoid & Robocop but nothing else.

b) Moving Mountains by Usher

- Yet another “depressed” song. Ick.

c) I Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles

- A month or so ago, this song played whilst on shuffle & that was it. It was on repeat for a solid two days & then I took a leap of faith & dived into The Beatles Anthology. In less than a month, I listened to The Beatles 1000+ times & it represents a really happy & empowering time in my life. I got through exams & managed to grow up a lot & make a lot of important choices, both in my social life & in my academic/employment life.

What songs/genres do you associate with things? It really interests me what people see as important songs or memories associated with songs.

Llevamos un tiempo viendo como grupos veteranos de gran calado volvían a anunciar su unión en detrimento de toda esa nueva generación de promesas que salen de los concursos. Les hacen sombra, no se puede negar y es que la fama, a pesar de ser desagradecida, siempre queda en el recuerdo nostálgico.

Grupos que dieron el pelotazo en su época como Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys o la posible reunión aún no confirmada de Take That ponen de relieve este hecho. Sin embargo, no solo bandas a las que muchos podrían considerar oportunistas se quieren reunir, también otras que tuvieron un auténtico gran éxito como Queen (una reunión que de vuelta casi solo tiene el nombre, por cierto), The Police o Blur.

Sin embargo, a las alegrías, penas.

Pulp ya confirmó que no iban a reunirse mediante Jarvis Jocker (ex líder) quien negó que Pulp, uno de los grupos más conocidos de la década dorada del brit pop de los 90, fuera a reunirse.

El último grupo que ha tenido que desmentir la supuesta unión, han sido los legendarios Led Zeppelin. El grupo se reunió varias veces para ensayar sus viejos temas sin la presencia del cantante. Seguramente, también nostálgicos, llegaron a revivir sentimientos de una época que acabó marcando a varias generaciones hasta el punto de surgir la idea de retomar la formación.

Pero el cantante no estaba; Robert Plant estaba sumergido en su aventura musical con Alison Krauss (cantante de Bluegrass) y no quería volver con Led Zeppelin para ninguna gira a pesar del éxito de su última unión sobre los escenarios en el O2 de Londres.

Embriagados por la ilusión buscaron durante un año un nuevo cantante. Finalmente, será John Paul Jones quien desmentirá la posible unión. Claro que al estar sumergido de lleno en el proyectoThem Crooked Vultures (del que ya os hemos hablado) seguro que le ha roto la ilusión, pero no las ganas de triunfar.

One of my boys was feeling down last night, so I went with him and some friends to Karaoke to cheer him up. Naturally, I can’t sing, or dance that well, so I was the world’s greatest audience member (as usual).

I said I was going home after he sang his song with a friend of his, but I just couldn’t help but stay an extra few minutes to watch these kids jump around to the Spice Girls’ hit song, “Wannabe.” Sometimes I think there’s a white girl in all of us….
