Female Siberian husky, exactly like the one I found today

I

Today was somewhat laid-back. I took my dog for a walk and suddenly, I came upon a beautiful Siberian husky with clear blue eyes. He was docile and playful, and his leash was still on him. He followed us around a bit and Spike quite liked him. I looked around for an owner, but none materialized. This dog was not fixed, but seemed to have been well taken care of. I couldn’t see any sores, scars, or marks on him. He was also extremely friendly.

I took his leash and not knowing exactly what to do, took him with me. I tried dropping him off at a friend’s place. They had four dogs before, two of them huskies, but now they have only 3. I thought that they could do something, but they weren’t home. Chad’s girlfriend Kate is Taiwanese and knows the area well, so she’d be able to phone people around to find out who his owner was.

Having struck out, I left the dog wander around and brought my own dog home. I left him outside. He wandered back to the dog park. I decided to get a Slurpee. I then went back to the park to check up on the dog. He was at the border of a park trying to make friends with another dog. The owner was leaving and our husky was left alone again. I took him home for real this time. He was very excited.

I gave him food and water. I had to leave him on the patio for two reasons. My cat Yoda¹ had never seen a big dog before and she obviously didn’t like him. She had her back all curled up and was emitting strange growling noises. I had never heard her do those noises before. They didn’t let up, even with the husky on the porch. The husky didn’t eat, but drank. After half an hour, he started yelping. I couldn’t have that. I took him back out to try and find his owners. I came upon a sort of temple right in front of our apartment. I’ve been told that these house temples are a sort of cover for local gangsters. Anyway, this older man with rotted out betel nut teeth knew exactly what was going on after I explained it a bit with gestures and my limited Mandarin. He brought me down the street to a place where old women were dancing. He gave the dog to the woman. I don’t think that she was the owner, since she didn’t greet him as much, but my guess is that she either knew the owner or would be able to find him a lot quicker than I would.

It’s a bit sad though. I’ve wanted to get a bigger dog for a while, but I can’t. I don’t have the time nor the place in my apartment for a bigger dog. As I watched him, I knew I couldn’t keep him. He was a cutie, but another dog would have been too much for right now. I barely have enough time for Spike. It made me realize how little work Spike is. He needs two walks a day and some play time inside. He doesn’t bark, yelp, nor destroy stuff. He’s also well trained and fixed. I’m sure that I could have trained the Siberian husky, but it wasn’t meant to be. At least I rescued him from the park, that’s what’s important. He won’t become another of Taipei’s strays.

I wonder what Jo will say to all this. We are leaving Taiwan in about two years. Having two pets is already a burden. Shipping them to the US will be expensive. Luckily, they won’t be in quarantine.

[¹]: My cat Yoda is a rescue. I rescued her as a kitten in July 2008. She was between 7 and 10 days old. I had to bottle feed her milk every four hours. She’s a bit feral, but mellowed up quite a bit since then.

The #8 “video game bug that made the game better” on that page is the Grand Theft Auto 4 swingset glitch that I posted about last August, along with a link to my post about it (“In GTA4, there’s a location where you can leave a car and it’ll promptly explode…”). The next Monday (11/23), I received 746 hits for that page alone. Damn!

Of course, the next day, it went down to its normal number of views. Still pretty cool, though. =)

But they also have to be good. Why is it so difficult to come up with a name that doesn’t sound like a blender full of semi-familiar syllabic grunts? It’s true that you can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs, but nor can you make one out of a liquorice bootlace and half a furry throat lozenge. Infinite monkeys and typewriters in this case wouldn’t help. They’d just throw up the same calamity of un-names I’ve already evacuated myself. Here are a few: Wallace Turner, Fraser Banks, Michael Eustace. Doubtless the quiche will flow freely when that triumvirate next throws a party.

6.50: Today has delivered by far smallest return of words since this began. Hardly surprising, it’s because the inevitable has arrived, and the sex has to be written. This isn’t easy, I’m telling you. Beth’s suggestion (“do it in French”), while probably sensible, is about as practicable as if she’d said “why not act it out in an extravagant mime routine, a la Marcel Marceau?” or “how about rendering it in a series of life-size matchstick models?”

I take my hat off to the nominees for this year’s Bad Sex awards that I was blathering on about on Day 19. I even take my hat off to Jonathan Lethem for this:

“At two that same morning he’d had Georgina swinging in a rope chair she’d had installed at his whimsical suggestion, hung from a bolted hook on her ceiling, her legs spilling over the sides of the mesh seat in which her splendid bottom lay helpless to his savage ministrations. The situation was wildly odd and erotic.”

At least they all took a deep breath, a swig of whisky, and forged ahead. Sometimes it seems to be all you can do.

A kids movie for the Whole Foods generation? There certainly is a fundamentally organic feel to Where the Wild Things Are. No matter the scene, every frame feels pieced together from scratch, whether a messily orchestrated, doomed-from-the-start snowball fight or an intimate, get-to-know-you conversation about eating one’s family. Still, perhaps such a fundamentally successful collaboration shouldn’t be surprising, since all but the most basic narrative of the movie required writer and director to partner on an almost uni-cellular, pre-embryonic level to ensure the heart of this enduring story adapted successfully to the screen. A fitting metaphor might be the scene quite a ways into the film where a conception of sorts occurs, followed by an appropriately symbolic rebirth, complete with the requisite bit of goo.

Needless to say, this isn’t your Mother’s kids film. While the best modern children’s films (like the Pixar oeuvre, most noticeably) often provide a few sly winks to the parents sprinkled amidst kid-friendly slapstick, Wild Things does just the opposite — it’s an adult film with a few winks to the kids just to keep them from becoming too antsy in their seats. Most of the film deals with quite weighty themes like, anger, alienation, and forgiveness. It’s not hard to believe that Freud or Jung would have had a field day with this one. You get the feeling it might have been tempting, even easier, to create an r-rated film tackling the same ideas, rather than to package the product in a pg-rated bow that ensure the kids and their dollars come along for the rather adult ride.

The acting is outstanding. My favorite moment was early in the film, when mother and son write a story together, and then share a glance almost too private, too wondrous, and too bittersweet to have been put to film. I’ll take that scene with me to the Oscars, even if the film is snubbed at nomination time.

And it might be. For although I loved the film, understood its message and marveled at its originality, I left the theater feeling as though there was something missing, and it took me a while to figure out what left me feeling unsatisfied — I was hoping for a misty eye. This is the guy who balled like a baby after watching Cameron’s Titanic — multiple times. Today, I needed some catharsis. I wanted to leave the theater feeling as though Jonze and Sendak managed to get a piece of me up on that screen. I wanted to feel like a bit of the boy in me was in the boy on the screen.

But somehow, I didn’t. Whether or not my experience is anomalous or the norm, I can’t help but recommend this movie with at least some reservation. Sure, the ending is moving, the goodbyes and the hellos poignant as much as they are expected, but I didn’t dwell on this film. My thoughts had moved on to lunch at Five Guys before I was 100 feet from the movie theater.

While Where the Wild Things are may feel organic in the best possible way,for me it’s still missing some vital ingredient that I need to call this movie great, rather than merely very good.

The other day, I watched disc 3 of season 4 of Buffy.  I was so engaged.  The three episodes – “Something Blue,” “Hush,” “Doomed” – make a great mix.  “Hush” is, of course, one of Whedon’s star episodes.  Combined, this disc brings us a full sense of Whedon’s great sense of humor and masterful drama.

“Something Blue” has got to one of Whedon’s best comedy episodes.  I love the fact that Buffy thinks she was the only one unaffected by Willow’s spell.  Of course her sudden engagement to Spike makes perfect sense!    The way she rambles about Spike to Riley and then manages to convince him she was only kidding is priceless.  Xander’s curse as a magnet for monsters is all too fitting with his past and his future (think of season five’s “Dracula” and his unwilling role as the prince’s “butt monkey”).  Xander does humor so well, especially when he is the “butt” of the joke.  And, of course, Giles’ loss of sight is fitting for one who depends so great on books, and there’s great humor that he can’t see Buffy & Spike, but they drive him crazy nonetheless.  Essentially, I think Buffy & Spike are the most humorous part of this episode.  Spike is a wonderful neutered-bad-guy.
On a serious note, my heart breaks for Willow.  We all know that feeling of just wanting to move through the pain.  And, it’s just so sucky that the rest of The Scoobies are tired of hearing her pain.  But, hey, at least she’s dealing!  Or, trying.  It’s not like she had to run to LA and change her name first or anything.  I’m just saying.  Willow’s facing her problems the best she can, and if her friends would have cut her a little more slack, maybe she wouldn’t have done the misfire spell in the first place.  (That’s probably one of the only times you’ll hear me criticize The Scoobies one bit!)

What can I say about “Hush” that hasn’t already been said?  It’s absolutely, incredibly, stunningly brilliant.  The Gentlemen are extremely creepy.  One of my childhood fears was not being able to scream, and I think that’s something that resonates with everyone.  Whedon’s ability to demonstrate the importance of communication and language and move through the bulk of the episode without dialogue is, well, did I already say masterful?  My 2 favorite parts – Buffy & Riley finally kiss when they don’t have voices; they stop getting in their own way!  Buffy & Riley finally learn each other’s secret identity and need to talk and get their voices back… and have no clue what to say!!

“Doomed” is great.  First of all, it shows us a glimpse of the deterioration of The Scoobies that Spike will take advantage of in “The Yoko Factor.”  But, really, the best part of “Doomed”?  Spike!  A neutered vampire trying to stake himself – great comedy.  Willow’s comforting words to Spike that their might be an apocalypse – hilarious!  And, of course, having all this happen in Xander’s colorful wardrobe instead of Spike’s usual drab attire drives the humor up yet another notch.  The best moment, though – when Spike learns he can still fight other demons.  Spike’s rallying speech at the end is priceless – “Come on!  Vampires!  Grrr!  Nasty!  Let’s annihilate them.  For justice – and for – the safety of puppies – and Christmas, right?”  He’s so wonderfully misguided.  It’s not too often you get to say “bad guys” doing the right thing for the wrong reasons!

A brief teaser for a new Tron game has been released over at GameTrailers, with the game’s world premiere coming to the Spike TV Video Game Awards on December 12.

The teaser – being a teaser – reveals next to nothing, but there are flashes of both light cycles and disc throwing. Tron Legacy, the new movie, has been set for a December 17, 2010 release in the United States, and will be presented in 3D.

A number of Tron games, both official and otherwise, have been made in the past, but it seems likely from what minuscule amount of information we have that this will be the most high-budget production yet.

This week brings us week 2 of the quarter finals.  Our scheduled fight is Brenden Schaub and Jon Madsen.

However, the bigger news seems to be the ongoing soap opera of Matt “Meathead” Mitrione.  Mitrione finally returns to the training center with a story of his brain swelling as the cause of his recent absence.  BS is called by the coaches and several castmates.

Meanwhile, the speculation continues as to who will replace Mitrione if he does drop out.

The prohibitive favorite seems to be Kimbo Slice, but that train may have gone off the rails this week.  Kimbo is having pain in his knee.  An MRI reveals missing cartilage in his knee that may require surgery.

Scott Junk still looks like hell from his fight with Mitrione.  Maybe he wouldn’t be as good a choice as I suggested last week.

The less said about the beach volleyball “coaches’ challenge” the better.  We’re obviously padding.  Of course, Evans does manage to pad his wallet and the wallets of his team by winning the thing, but still.

Rashad Evans calls Mitrione aside for a heart-to-heart.  He asks Meathead straight up if he wants to fight and only gets another evasive answer.  Fed up, Evans puts in a call to Dana White.  The president of the UFC calls all the fighters together and gives them his version of a pep talk…

You want fame?  Well, fame costs.  And right here is where you start paying.  With sweat.

Wait.  That’s not right.

For those of you keeping track at home, that’s two Fame references on GonzoGeek this week.

We really are gonna live forever.

White’s speech talks about fighters getting hurt, fighters fighting hurt and how nobody is forcing the contestants to fight.  The entire time he was talking all I could here was Debbie Allen’s Fame speech.

He doesn’t single out Mitrione, but the implication is there.

Then its on to the fight.

Schaub and Madsen have a good first round.  Its a back and forth fight.  Things change dramatically in the second round when Schaub uses his reach advantage to simply knock Madsen the hell out.  The punch was solid and it sent Jensen to the mat hard.

Schaub joins Big Country in the semi-finals.
