Samak finds food and politics don't mix Former Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej died yesterd

Samak finds food and politics don't mix

Former Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej died yesterday. He succumbed to liver cancer in Bangkok’s Bumrungrad Hospital, aged 74.

Samak was PM when I moved to Thailand in April last year. He was quite a character and his presence – along with the movements of his rivals and his interactions with the press – could at times be quite comic, if not downright farcical. Before Thai politics turned sour with mob protests, airports seiges and coups, it could even be quite fun to read about Samak’s exploits.

He was the first of three PMs in my time here (three leaders in 19 months in itself is an indictment of the state of Thai politics) and by far the most memorable. He was nowhere near as photogenic as current PM Abhisit Vejjajiva, nor was he anything like as polite as his successor, Somchai Wongsawat, but that is precisely why he made his mark. He behaved aggressively, he was beligerent to the media, he sulked in public, he was unafraid to belittle people if he felt they deserved it, he was stoic in the face of political pressure – and his hardened appearance matched these, ahem, qualities.

In deeply-divided Thailand, he certainly had his critics and enemies. It was his very presence as PM – and the fact that he was an open supporter of Thaksin Shinawatra and his ideology – that sparked the “yellow shirt” protests of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), who laid seige to the grounds of Government House for weeks while Samak was in charge, and which ultimately – under Somchai’s premiership – led to deaths and the one-week closure of Bangkok’s two airports, causing untold damage to the nation’s economy and reputation.

But I respected Samak’s single-mindedness in the face of such pressure, with not only the PAD but also significant political commentators calling for his head. Not for him the weak attempts to appease all of successor Somchai, whose two and a half months in office were among the more forgettable even in a country known for the transciency of its leaders. Nor for him the squeaky clean, ever-smiling PR profile of Abhisit, who was surely appointed (notice I didn’t say elected) more for his appearance and undoubted charisma than for any heavyweight political credentials.

No, Samak told it the way he saw it, and while that of course didn’t mean he was always right, it did at least show he had the courage of his convictions, and to express himself publicly without first needing a spin doctor to polish his words.

Now, as stated before, I’m not a political analyst. This is not my area of strength, although like most people I have my own political opinions. But the news of Samak’s passing gave me cause to remember some of his more colourful moments.

Cake-eating cat

First of all, before the squabbling erupted into violent demonstrations, there was the usual tit-for-tat name-calling in Government House, with one opposition politician (I forget her name) bringing Samak to task for his choice of cafeteria food. As a man in his seventies, she said it was inappropriate for him to choose a piece of cake for lunch, washed down with a glass of bright red soft drink. She suggested Samak seek psychological help, because Adolf Hitler was known to have similarly immature tastes.

Now, even within the realms of political cat-calling, which often amounts to no more than childish spats along the lines of “You smell!” “Yeah? Well, you smell worse!”, this was adorably convoluted. Never mind education, employment and crime – “Prime Minister, would you care to justify buying that cake? Because I’m rather worried it is a sign you may be a tyrant in the making, capable of ordering the slaughter of millions.”

Samak, as was his wont, barely dignified the comment, choosing instead to fix her with a customary silent staredown.

But Samak’s finest hour would not have looked out of place in an episode of Fawlty Towers, such was the level of high farce.

Pursued on motorbikes by a press pack from Government House to Chatuchak Market, Samak sought refuge in a public toilet. Not wishing to speak to the media, he remained in a cubicle, but unfortunately for him the journalists proved even more stubborn than he. More than an hour later, Samak could no longer stand the heat, moisture, smell and mosquitoes (I have been to the toilets at Chatuchak Market and they’re no place for a dignitary, let me tell you), and emerged, furious and doused with sweat.

He ignored the reporters’ questions (surely the fact he spent an hour inside a toilet cubicle would have told them he was in no mood to speak?), instead bearing down on them with a fuming glare of which Charles Bronson would have been proud. After staring them into silence, he set about berating them and their conduct, and labelling them “disgusting” no less than a dozen times.

Reaction to this incident depended, of course, on which side you were on – either Samak was rightly defending himself against media intrusion, or he showed an arrogant disrespect towards the free press, who were just doing their job in the public interest.

There’s a bit of truth to both sides, but the bigger picture for me at the time was the fun factor of living in a country where the PM is forced to flee halfway across a city as hungry hacks literally chase him into a stinking, mosquito-blown long-drop. Add to that the picture of the nation’s leader stewing there for over an hour, followed by his ultimate outburst, and clearly you can see Samak Sundaravej was not your average politican.

And his eventual dismissal from office in September 2008, after just eight and a half months, was also unorthodox, if not comic for its irony. While the country’s leading industries of tourism, exports and foreign investment were taking near-death blows from the effects of the protracted demonstrations, and while the spectre of corruption hung over everything Thaksin and his allies did, it was none of these concerns which spelled the end for Samak. No, he was booted out because he had twice appeared on a TV cooking show. Innocent enough, except politicians are not allowed to accept money for working with private enterprises. Samak’s fee was nominal and his appearance of no bearing whatsoever to his political standing, but this was a conflict of interest. Not quite along the lines of Thaksin using his position to allow his then-wife Potjaman na Pombejra to purchase multi-million-baht swathes of land, but still, rules are rules…

Ultimately, it may have been a face-saving move. As pathetic a reason it may have seemed for removing a democratically elected PM, Thailand was at the time being virtually held hostage by protesters, with the international news coverage doing the country no favours. There were far bigger concerns than the PM’s appearance on a cookery show, but Samak was steadfast in his refusal to stand down or dissolve the cabinet, the two main demands of the PAD, despite the presence of 30,000 protesters camping out on the lawns of his workplace.

So while the cookery show controversy was of negligible importance, by following the law to the letter, the courts could remove him from office legitimately. And with that removal came a lull – as temporary was it was – in the tensions. The PAD had not been placated, as the Thaksin-backed People Power Party was still in charge, but tempers were nevertheless calmed, and at a critical time.

It also proved timely for Samak himself. Despite being disqualified from the premiership, he had the opportunity to return to power if voted back in, but instead he accepted the judgement and retreated from politics. It seemed strange for such a combative man to slip away from the spotlight so quickly and readily.

But then news came less than a month later that he had been diagnosed with liver cancer, and it all made sense. It’s unknown how long he’d been sick. Indeed, it’s likely he was running the country while ill. Considering how stressful a task that must have been in the late summer of 2008, that shows either remarkable devotion or unwavering stubborness. In Samak’s case, it was probably a bit of both.

He flew to the US for treatment in the new year, returning to Bangkok and continuing to be treated at Bumrungrad, one of the country’s best hospitals. After roughly a year battling the disease, he passed away at 8:48am yesterday morning.

I en intervju med E24 sade talmannen följande;

När Anders Borg skulle förklara varför regeringen delade ut hela budgeten redan på söndagen presenterade hela budgeten för media lät han som sin egen spin doctor;

It used to drive me crazy when my reporter friends called me a “spin doctor”. To them I had crossed

It used to drive me crazy when my reporter friends called me a “spin doctor”.

To them I had crossed over to the dark side. I had gone from being a keeper of the flame to selling secrets to the enemy. I was revealing to the world the secret handshake and it was not only disloyal, it was downright dangerous. How could reporters do their jobs if everyone knew their tricks?

Reporting is a tough job with incredible pressure but many stories fall into a pattern and are pre-written before the interview even takes place. Reporters decide what they want you to say before they arrive for the interview.

If you haven’t thought about your message or if you think you’ll just answer the questions then you are more likely to be drawn into the pre-determined story. People who have been media trained have a clear idea of what their message is and a very clear idea of what they want to say about the topic.

The reporter’s agenda is to get a good story. The agenda of anyone being interviewed should be to get a message out in an accurate, concise and honest way. In the best of worlds, those agendas mesh and everyone, including the audience, wins.

A reporter has to work harder to interview someone who has been media trained. Cheap tricks don’t intimidate them and a superficial knowledge of the subject won’t trick them. The reporter has to do his or her homework, keep an open mind and not jump to conclusions. Media training makes better reporters.

The job of anyone being interviewed is to provide as much clarity as possible and that can only be done by strategically planning out what you want to say before the interview begins and then practising how you’re going to say it.

Many reporters actually like to interview people who have been media trained because it increases the likelihood that they will have a well-defined, articulate and succinct point of view. Of course, if a reporter specializes in sensational stories that make people appear guilty or evasive, media training is seen as more of a hindrance than a help.

Over the years I’ve become more thick-skinned about comments from my reporter friends. Maybe it’s because I’ve media trained more than a thousand people and less than a handful of them ever looked forward to a media interview. Their biggest fear is usually that the media will get it wrong.

Spin doctor? I suppose so, but the spin that has worked best for my clients is one that might surprise some reporters. It’s the basis of any message and the quickest way out of trouble – tell the truth.

The trick is to tell it well.

Mike Huckabee, the former Governor of Arkansas and Republican presidential candidate, complained to

Mike Huckabee, the former Governor of Arkansas and Republican presidential candidate, complained to Politico Tuesday that journalism is dead in America. Huckabee’s outrage came several weeks after much of the national media scolded him for remarks made on his radio show regarding the potential fate of Sen. Ted Kennedy under the proposed Obama healthcare plan.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee

In his interview, Huckabee claimed that journalists today rely on “spin-doctor spoon feeding,” and that they rarely go directly to the source for quotes. He even went as far as to accuse Newsweek of fabricating quotes.

Poor Huck. Right? Not really.

The truth of the matter is that Newsweek’s quotes contain the exact wording from the Aug. 27 edition of “The Huckabee Report”. Don’t believe it? \”The Huckabee Report\” from Aug. 27

Huckabee has also complained that his statements about Kennedy and health care were taken out of context by the media. He defended his comments on his weekly television show, “Huckabee”, which airs on Fox News. During the program, Huckabee used footage from a June 23 ABC town hall meeting with President Obama. In the footage Obama tells Jane Sturm, the daughter and primary caregiver to her 105-year-old mother, that in some cases the best option for our nation’s elderly may be to set aside surgeries with little chance of success. Huckabee associated the President’s remarks with the death panel accusations that Republicans have made throughout the ongoing healthcare debate.

What Huckabee does not take into consideration, is that he too is part of the media, and that he too takes quotes out of context. Huckabee’s show left out vital portions of Obama’s conversation that put the Sturm comment in context. Obama did not coldheartedly tell Sturm to let her elderly mother die. Obama said, “ultimately [end of life decisions] are going to be between physicians and patients.”

Nearing end of life surgeries are simply health care costs that President Obama wants patients and doctors to consider. Obama never told Sturm’s mother to “give up on life, and go home to take pain pills, and die,” the way that Huckabee had described “Obamacare” in his radio show regarding Sen. Kennedy. Obama simply told Sturm that Americans need to weigh the cost-benefits of some operations.

Face it Huck, you’re part of the same media problem that you denounce. Keep spinning ‘em Huck!

Former Quebec lieutenant-governor Lise Thibault will face six criminal charges in connection with her expense accounts. Not surprised at all… they should audit every single expense claim by people in such positions. Most civil and public servants do it but some do it on a larger scale. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2009/09/25/thibault-charges.html

The Federal public servants at Transport Canada are routinely filing millions of dollars in expenses – including overtime, salaries and computers – toward a construction project that doesn’t exist. The Mackenzie Valley pipeline remains a mega-project that is perpetually on the horizon –The project seemed closer at hand when a fund was set up at Transport Canada six years ago so that the department could oversee the expected increase in air traffic and other transportation needs. Though the pipeline remains in limbo, the department has kept the fund alive year after year, using it to cover millions in expenses that have nothing to do with the pipeline. Documents released through access-to-information requests list the expenses, which total $10.7-million since 2004. Expenses continued to be billed to the pipeline project this year. ” So, when you consider that Chuck Guite (Sr. Public servant) and Paul Coffin (ad exec) started running their fake ad invoice scam during the Mulroney administration, it appears that the Liberals inherited AdScam from the Conservatives, does it not? ” ”This is why our taxes are so high. Take this and the Gold that vanished at the Mint and the tab is through the roof. Anyone want to bet the Mint millions gets swept under the carpet?” “ Too much time spent electioneering and not enough time spent runnin’ things. ” http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/transport-canada-fictitiously-expensing-millions/article1286306/

There’s something deeply ironic about all of this, and previous federal governments; they know that the cities, provinces that suppossedly drive the economy they know they also do steal a lot of the money too.. Premier’s Letter To The Ontario Public Service

No such thing as a little bit pregnant, what other wrongs, thefts are the civil and public servants doing and falsely covering up now? And now still all this being done while most Canadians now do live from paycheque to paycheque. Majority of Canadian employees living paycheque to paycheque, survey shows

Is this how the rest of the federal economic stimulation money will be now abused as well? Right under the federal Conservative Minister’s noses now as well?

HOW MUCH OF THE CANADIAN FEDERAL CONSERVATIVE RECESSION STIMULATION MONEY IS BUDGETED THIS YEAR ALONE, AND HOW MUCH HAS ACTUALLY BEEN ISSUED, AND HOW MANY REAL , NEW JOBS WERE ACTUALLY NOW CREATED AS A RESULT? NONE, AND THE MONEY IS ALL GONE?

The Conservative federal government is an unacceptably very poor manager of the taxpayer’s money now as well. The Federal Transfer payments make up a very large part of federal expenditures. The federal government is a tax collector, money expediter and an useless money administrator too, while the federal government’s own regular operating expenses for fiscal 2009-2010 will be only about a quarter of its total spending all the taxpayer’s money expenditures still needs to be supervised, yes held accountable for now as well.

Flaherty had said the government would clean up its books by restraining the growth in federal program spending over several years. That spending, now $241 billion a year, has been growing on average at a rapid 7 per cent annual rate since Harper took office. We can see why too.. the liars also all keep on allowing the taxpayer’s money to be stolen..

The Conservative federal Government expenditures since Harper came into office, his government expenditures have ballooned by over 30 per cent. They rather had increased spending by three times the rate of inflation in the three budgets before the recession hit, and now spend $40 billion more annually than the last Liberal government. Consultants. Harper government spent nearly a billion dollars on consultants in its first two years in office: a 42-per-cent increase over the amount the previous Liberal government spent between 2004 and 2006 on consultants (Toronto Star, December 8, 2008). Ministerial expenses. Despite promising to tighten their belts, a Toronto Star analysis found that Conservative ministers are spending more than Liberals ever did in government (The Toronto Star, November 22, 2008), while Harper’s expansion of the federal cabinet last fall will cost taxpayers an additional $3.9 million in salaries alone for the extra ministers and their staff. Polling. In 2007, the Harper government commissioned more than two polls per business day which totalled $31 million in the government’s first year of government. Prime Minister’s Office. Last week it was revealed that spending in Prime Minister Harper’s own office soared by 14 per cent in a single year – the tune of a whopping $20 million. (Canwest News Service, September 4, 2009). http://www.liberal.ca/en/newsroom/media-releases/16292_when-pigs-fly-more-huffing-and-puffing-from-harpers-55-billion-man

Where is PM Stephen Harper’s promised restraint, accountability now as well?

Conservative Ministers merely like to do all the talking but seem to bring no real, viable acts, actions on the issues still too. Unacceptable.

And why is it that their only solution to any problem in Canada seems to involve a tax increase? Because sadly that even the Conservatives undeniably too really are not better economic managers over the past Liberals..

The essential needed way to save our taxpayer’s money is still to look at how all of these public services are delivered - and no one can tell me that there are no cost-cutting savings to be achieved. Compare say a city like Montreal or Toronto where exorbitant rates too now are also paid for useless civil and public servants with their rather unskilled services – sadly this same phenomena can be seen in many federal ministries.

For a start all Ministers supervising better all of their expenditures, and bringing all of the subordinates salaries and wages in line with the private sector would enable us firstly to continue delivering public services at the same level, or more! It is the still the too often abusive civil and public servants spending that now also determines the still abusive personal taxes.

The sad unacceptable fact is that this type of taxpayer’s money abuse, practice is not an isolated case, but rather repeats itself often, Canada wide at the federal, provincial, municipal levels undeniably too.. Money allotted is not used where it was originally supposed to be but often is transferred to some other department, account.. and how is it the auditor generals did not pick it up for 10 years too? or refuse too?

Any Abuse of any taxpayers finds should be a criminal offence fully prosecutable by law, and should mean the immediate dismissal of all involved too, after all it is stealing the taxpayer’s money. Police, judges, supervisors don’t tend to enforce it cause they do the same thing? All Unacceptable still

We need better Policing and “Tougher penalties for sure!” You will get a longer jail sentence for robbing a convenience store of $50 than fleecing investors for millions (billions) or stealing any of the tax payer’s money. “Also, put an end to double credit for pre-sentence incarceration!!” Put all of the criminals in jail, and their bad supervisors now too, where they belong, and always do take way from them all that they have stolen now as well.. and do start with the bad civil and public servants now as well.

The province said it is also planning to increase the number of random audits it carries out on the province’s agencies, boards and commissions. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2009/09/14/ont-expenses.html and about time now too!

Quebec says it is intensifying police efforts to tackle corruption and financial fraud in the province amid a growing public furor over white-collar crime. The Charest government says a squad of about 20 provincial police investigators will be assigned to probe potential corruption – including the infiltration of organized crime – in the construction industry and municipal affairs. It will also bolster its police presence to track fraud with Quebec’s securities regulator, the Autorité des marchés financiers. Meanwhile, with Montrealers going to the polls this fall, city hall is under a cloud for allegations of fraud, kickbacks and the inappropriate awarding of contracts. Multiple police investigations have been launched. Last week, a senior civil servant and a computer consultant were charged with defrauding the city of millions in a bogus billing scheme in the city’s computer division. While Quebec rejigs its police manpower, some have called for a public commission into the province’s construction industry and possible ties to organized crime. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/quebec-cracks-down-or-corruption-white-collar-crime/article1286432/

Quebec “coming after” white collar criminals.. I hope they catch Chretien and Martin… I hope the measures will also include effective tools to get the embezzled money back…. People like Vincent Lacroix and Earl Jones should also spend the rest of their lives making restitution to the people they stole from. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2009/09/14/quebec-fraudsters-white-collar-criminals.html

and why did it take so long to deal with white collared crimes that have been clearly ongoing even in Quebec too now for decades, not just in all of Canada. I don’t think that drugs is the only thing we have to worry about. Also What ought to be of far greater concern for all Canadians is the entry of illegal weapons into Canada. Perhaps the money wasted on arming our border guards could have been better spent trying to prevent these weapons from getting onto the streets of our cities.. it amazes me as to how much attention is given to taxpayers in arrears, and almost none given to canadian security.why are we paying these elected bufoons so much money, and allowing them huge pensions after so little time in office?expense accounts, vehicles, perks, and they cant even manage a railyard?theres better security at a rock concert! i wish they would work as hard for those of us who voted them in,as they do trying to get re-elected,,it makes ya wonder who the idiots are us or the politicians we voted form, what a mess. Regular citizens are getting worked over like never before and always without a smile! “Never worry, never fear” etc etc. Not to mention the really top-notch work done by all Harper’s tough-on-crime policies and accountability… [this was a sarcastic comment for those who missed it] http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/09/14/border-railway-inspect-train-drug.html

Ontario Premier McGuinty announced that expenses for cabinet ministers, political aides, top mandarins, and all senior executives at Ontario’s 22 largest agencies will be posted on the Internet as of next April 1. “We’re going to shine a light on all expenses so Ontarians will know who, exactly, is spending what, exactly,” the premier told reporters. The premier is girding for an onslaught of opposition attacks stemming from controversy over expenses and perks at the OLG and eHealth Ontario. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said voters are tired of an “arrogant” government that seems to make things harder on taxpayers and easier for insiders. The waste of precious tax dollars on these scandals is unacceptable .. people are telling me they are fed up with a government not able to focus on putting the dollars where they belong,” ”the Liberals’ “culture of entitlement.” http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/695359

GREAT EXAMPLE OF THE TYPICAL LIE BY PM HARPER TOO…the prime minister has two messages – one for the public and one for Conservative supporters. B.C. Liberal MP Ujjal Dosanjh said the Tory government hasn’t changed its ways and Harper is still “a bully and will be a bully tomorrow.” Stephen Harper’s Conservatives ignore Canada’s multicultural heritage, have little pride in the country’s health-care system, and ignore Canadian cultural workers. Harper also told the Sault Ste. Marie crowd, “Imagine how different things would be if the Liberals were still in power. Imagine how many left-wing ideologues they would be putting in the courts, federal institutions and agencies.”

NOW ABOUT THE TOO MANY CONTROVERSIAL POLLS, WE SEEM TO KNOW THAT POLLS SELL NEWS PAPERS, BUT HOW REALLY ACCURATE ARE THEY? FOR EXAMPLE WE ALL SEEM TO ALSO KNOW HOW POLLS CAN BE MADE TO LIE, CAN BE BOUGHT BY THE HIGHEST BIDDERS IT SEEMS AND CONTRADICT THE REALITY especially depending on what part of the country it was taken.. Election time is when the Biggest liars escalate what they have been doing all year now anyway

1 Liberal support softening, poll suggests ” The federal Liberals appear to be losing some ground in popularity, a new poll suggests, with the Tories taking a slight overall lead.” “Not so sure about this poll, I think public opinion is a better barometer of the political climate. And from what I’ve seen on this and other message boards, everyone is pretty much fed up with the status quo. If there was a vote held today, I wonder which way it would go: “

Liberal = Agree  842     Conservative = Disagree 464

Doer has not given a date for his departure, but the NDP leadership convention is set for Oct. 16-17. As ambassador-designate, Doer is in a “clear conflict of interest” by staying on as premier, said Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard. Doer’s new job means his boss is now Harper, not the people of Manitoba, Gerrard said. “It impacts, for example, the ability of the premier to stand forcefully up against the federal government when the interests of the hog industry are not being well supported or when the interests of people who’ve been flooded in the Interlake are not supported well, or when Tembec workers are locked out,” he said. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2009/09/15/mb-doer-conflict-gerrard-manitoba.html

5: The far right itself, THE cANADIAN cONSERVATIVES TOO, often still coerces others who do not go along with them by “Borking” them. ”Taiwanizing” means calumniating, ostracizing, excluding and hopefully ultimately de-legitimizing a country. Doing the same thing to a person is called “Borking”. Borking is “to attack a person’s reputation and views unfairly,” includes the concerted attack on the challenger’s character, background and philosophy.. Example to fire an honest government official in an attempt to prevent embarrassment to and exposure of a dishonest government officeholder who has conspired to commit high crimes, the 1973 unacceptable firing, massacre of Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox by Solicitor General Robert Bork, orchestrated by both Bork and President Richard Nixon . Conservative activists have been making the same action over and over again in regard to the so called liberals, leftists, news media reporters: The borked opponents aren’t debated but merely shut down, censored, their free speech denied, and often next immediately they are forcibly removed, kicked out, never allowed to be discussed again too by anyone, and hopefully insuring their person and his views being totally excluded from the rest of the local group, community. The fact this is too often practiced in too many evangelical churches of all places is astounding. The real Irony and hypocrisy is the right wing often claim they rather now are being Borked BY THE LIBERALS even while they are Borking the others. NOW why is SOME pastors so ready not to talk with others now too? so ready to smite them, to kick them out of church? If you have love for someone you are willing to talk with them, but if you do not have love for them, especially if, when you know they do not support you, do not agree with your presentation, do not agree with your point of view, you as a pastor too no can personally can instead refuse to love them, you refuse to talk to them, you find any excuse to reject, ostracize, divorce them basically to deny, to cover up the unacceptable reality that you yourself the pastor actually do not have any love for them. http://postedat.wordpress.com/2009/08/31/get-real-now/

Majority government in reach: Harper Prime Minister Stephen Harper believes a majority government “is in reach” for the Conservative party the next time Canadians go to the polls for a federal election. Majority government Steve? Only if you have Elections Afghanistan running your campaign… Consolation: this is the same guy who last time around didn’t see the recession coming, nor did he think a deficit was in the stars… He needs another crystal ball! AND WE NEED another PM!.. Harper, you have worn out your welcome, just please leave. A minority, government will be good for Canada, although, the optimum would be the NDP to rule, with a Liberal opposition. Then we would see the middle and lower class Canadians being put first, instead of Corporations and oil companies. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/09/09/prime-minister-stephen-harper-video-marjority.html

Conservative Prime Minister Harper damages public perception with partisanship with his majority emphasis “it only exacerbates the concerns some Canadians have with the prime minister — the very concerns that have precluded Mr. Harper from getting the majority he so clearly desires.” “ it creates the impression that Mr. Harper does have a hidden agenda he isn’t ready to share with all voters, and for voters to give the Conservatives a majority just could unleash a lot of other policies the party has shelved from its Reform and Alliance incarnations. ” The StarPhoenix

“There have always been two Harpers,” Ignatieff told a news conference Thursday. “The real Harper always comes out when he thinks he can’t be heard.” He said the true Harper is contemptuous of other political parties, the justice system, and the social institutions Canadians hold dear. Ignatieff also scoffed at the closed-door rallying cry for a majority. He said he’s toured the country this summer and met jobless Canadians – who would “laugh in your face” if asked whether Harper deserves a majority. He said it’s no longer possible to work with a man so contemptuous of basic Canadian values, and reiterated his plan to bring down the Conservative government. “(Harper’s) already lost the confidence of the House once,” Ignatieff said, referring to the attempted coalition takedown of the Tories last year. “He’s about to lose it a second time.” http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5iR0p08b5Dvq1t7rAD-_6YGDLOEbA

“It’s this kind of hyper-partisan description of every adversary as an enemy that makes it difficult to make Parliament work,” offered Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff, indicative of the PM’s “spiteful attitude” toward the courts and the “institutions which guarantee our freedom.”

Prime Minister Harper how you can get a majority government when Quebec clearly and rightfully rejects you is beyond most of us… A disenchanted Tory adviser in Quebec is now in talks with the Bloc Quebecois about running for the separatist party. The loss of Pierre Brien is yet another blow to declining Tory fortunes in the province, and a potential new weapon for the separatists in any coming election. Brien sat as a Bloc Quebecois MP until 2003, when he left the party to run for the Action Democratique du Quebec (ADQ). He was working on contract as an adviser to Public Works Minister Christian Paradis — Stephen Harper’s Quebec lieutenant — until last month. Brien confirmed Thursday that he is in preliminary talks with the Bloc. His departure is another sign, say Conservative insiders, of a malaise they just can’t shake in the province. Many are concerned about holding on to the party’s 10 seats in Quebec amid flagging polling numbers “The situation in Quebec leaves much to be desired and is worse than last year,” one senior Tory conceded. Quebec’s Le Devoir newspaper reported Thursday that an internal analysis recently commissioned for the party in the province predicted the Conservatives might lose six of their seats in a federal election. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics/2009/09/10/10827031-cp.html

“It doesn’t have to be true. It just has to be plausible.” said Tom Flanagan, Conservative Prime Minister Harper’s former adviser, so more lies, damned lies, and , the lies include scare tactics, as “ he’ll do anything that could get a majority ” , Conservative Prime Minister Harper in desperation, to maintain power, tries to consolidate his base outside of Quebec and to try to scare enough undecided voters in the rest of Canada to not vote Liberal. The Gazette (Montreal)

And speaking of personal delusions too sadly.. During last year’s election campaign, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada would not suffer an economic recession and the federal government would not run a budget deficit. In the budget, Flaherty had predicted that the government would begin running budget surpluses again in 2013-14 but he now says there will be an $11.2 billion defict that year, followed by another deficit of $5.2 billion the following year. He said the deficit this year will hit $55.9 billion, up from the $33.7 billion shortfall predicted in January. And next year’s deficit will hit $45.3 billion, up from the January prediction of $30 billion.

Meanwhile Police raid ends jetliner hijacking in Mexico. Five Canadians were among the passengers caught up in a bizarre hijacking in Mexico. Right winged ‘Religious fanatic preacher’ hijacked Mexican plane. Christ is coming soon,” he added, smiling. Jose Flores, a 44-year-old Bolivian preacher. ex self confessed drug addict, who lives in Mexico, said he had gotten the word from God that he had to warn Mexicans of an impending disaster — an earthquake “like none there has ever been,” so he hijacked a plane to tell his message directly to the Mexican president. “He said he had tried to speak to the president for three months and since there hadn’t been an answer he decided to use these type of threats with an airline,” The jet had been flying between the eastern city of Cancun and the capital Mexico City when it was seized. Jose Flores Pereira, had threatened to blow up the plane unless he was able to speak to the Mexican president Felipe Calderon. Mr Flores, next said he had used a can of juice to look like a bomb when he attempted the hijacking. He said he had acted on Wednesday, as the date, September 9th 2009, represented the number 9/9/9/ – the inverse of 6/6/6 the “number of the beast”. Mr Flores had had a “revelation that Mexico was facing a great danger and was threatened by an earthquake”. A total of 112 people were onboard the AeroMexico Flight 576 including Mexicans, Americans and French. They have been freed by police after the plane in which they were travelling was hijacked in Mexico landed safely. Mexican officials claim no-one was hurt during the incident. His wife, Elizabeth Melgar, said that Flores “always told me that he was looking for a way to attract the attention of the media … he always told me that he was waiting for a signal from God to do something.” Good thing he wasn’t trying to hijack the federal government now too. Federal votes were to be held every four years after that. Federal justice department lawyers, acting for Prime Minister Harper, told the court that the prime minister doesn’t call an election; rather the Governor General does. And nothing in the fixed election date law restricts the Governor General’s actions nor does it say anything about the advice the prime minister is allowed to give to others. Democracy Watch says Harper’s opportunistic move broke the spirit if not the letter of the legislation – The prime minister’s diversion to the Governor General is merely a distortion, another of the prime minister’s many lies. Harper still lies too often. It’s now up to a judge to decide whether Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s snap election call a year ago was not just politically self-serving but also illegal.

Justice Pierre Blais, who served in several portfolios in the cabinet of former prime minister Brian Mulroney, takes over from Justice John Richard, who retired in June. Blais, a 11-year-veteran of the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal, receives his promotion at a time when the two courts are under increasing scrutiny for their enhanced role of adjudicating high-profile cases involving national security and terrorism. The Conservatives have recently lost several cases in the two courts, including a high-profile defeat last month when the appeal court upheld an order for the Harper Conservatives to seek the repatriation of Canadian terror suspect Omar Khadr from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/Harper+names+former+Tory+minister+head+appeals+court/1979619/story.html

Harper also described how their party was keeping leftists from being appointed to public institutions – including the courts. The Bloc says it’s particularly bothered by that comment about the judiciary. Leader Gilles Duceppe says, behind closed doors, Harper sounds like a member of the radical fringe of the U.S. Republican party. The NDP calls the remarks low politics that undermine Canada’s justice system.

Stephen Harper, Canadian prime minister has appointed another chief justice of the B.C. Supreme Court. Robert Bauman, who formerly sat on the B.C. Court of Appeal. Bauman’s appointment takes effect immediately, Perhaps the more important issue isn’t whether or not Bauman is soft on drunk drivers or excessively eager to uphold the interests of powerful institutions. It’s the fact that he was appointed by the prime minister and not elected by his peers on the bench of the B.C. Supreme Court. As chief justice, Bauman has enormous power. He has sole authority over assigning cases to judges in his court. Bauman can grant requests for early trial dates and ask for meetings with other judges. He can decide who will hear applications concerning the validity of search warrants or whether the information to obtain these search warrants should be sealed from public scrutiny. In a 1995 book called Judicial Conduct and Accountability, Ontario judge T. David Marshall claimed that the biggest threat to the independence of the judiciary in Canada is the chief justices themselves. They deal directly with provincial governments on securing financial resources to administer justice in their courts. Marshall also criticized the practice of elevating judges from one level of court to another, suggesting that this created an incentive for some to tailor their rulings to enhance the likelihood of a promotion. Harper likes to talk a lot about accountability, but his insistence on retaining sole authority over the appointment of chief justices of the superior courts demonstrates that his actions don’t always match his words. http://www.straight.com/article-256725/stephen-harper-chief-justice-frank-bauman-and-judicial-accountability

The other day in leafy Georgetown, a French historian – and, alas!, soon to be economist – made a remarkable observation. Unaware that I recently abandoned my obsession with difference for an obsession with similarity, he claimed that Washington DC in 2009 must resemble fin de siècle Vienna. I pounced.

His argument – my recollection of which is smudged by several bottles of wine that followed his exposé – is that contemporary DC and imperial Vienna share far-reaching delusions of grandeur. Größenwahn, in Kaiserlingo.

The parallel is compelling. Vienna’s fin de siècle Hofräte, K&K confectioners and psychoanalysts are DC’s hill staffers, spin doctors and fitness gurus. (For a great film on DC fitness gurus, watch Burn After Reading. For more on spin doctoring watch the same film or watch out for my blog on Campaign Management classes, coming soon).

Vienna had 8-horse coaches; DC has 500-horsepower SUVs. The Pestsäule am Graben is an ornate and less phallic Washington Memorial. Here and there, neoclassical columns are ubiquitous, as are large avenues named after important states, such as Pennsylvania Avenue or Kärtner Straße. In both imperial hubs, regal government officials pranced about deploying troops to discipline unruly minorities or borders. The Naturhistorische Museum had Steller’s sea cow , the Aerospace museum has spaceships and unmanned battle drones. That is just the surface!

The extinct Sea Cow (Hydrodamalis gigas)

MQ-9 Reaper, a hunter-killer surveillance UAV used by US and UK in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Größenwahn, of course, goes much deeper. It lives in the heads of policymakers who can pull the plug on millions, and in the heads of their eager disciples, who hope to do the same one day. It lives in the curt frowns of waiters who are used to serving Chateau Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 1986, not the cheapest bottled Bud please. Quite frankly, it resides in the mere possibility of wielding absolute power.

Of course, delusions of grandeur are still delusions, and so my brief postulation begs the question whether Americans will fall from grace, just like the Austrians did? This is where I disagree with my French friend. I don’t think so – and in fact I don’t think the analogy carries very far at all – if only because I am better at spotting difference than its reverse.

Spin doctor.
