A short post tonight. I’m so happy it’s Thursday and I have a long weekend! It is chilly here, I’m tired and sore. The family is out at a Christmas party. I just finished drinking my veggie tea with spirulina and hemp oil.

I got up on time today (barely) and the power was on (novel). I drank my MSM + Lemon Juice in water, attended to my enema and did a full round of skin brushing. Freezing the whole time!!! I juiced bunches of stuff this morning: red leafed lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, spinach, beets, apple and lemon. I filled two quarts with that stuff. I also juiced oranges and filled a 16 oz. bottle with that. I used rose hip powder, kelp powder and reishi again in my juices.

I actually finished all of my juice today at work and ate a lot of Jarrah Bee Pollen. I had tea & coconut oil with my breakfast and also put some warm tea in a water bottle with MSM & stevia and drank that all at work as well. My appetite is definitely increasing a bit. I got some new stuff like grapes and dandelion greens to juice tomorrow so that should be nice.

Its early but I’m tired, as I’ve been all day. I’m going to take a hot bath, drink some tea and have a little raw goats milk again I’m sure. I got some Intestinal Movement Formula today as well and plan on starting that tonight.

Spirulina is a deep blue-green fresh water alga–actually, a form of bacteria which contains 60% prot

Spirulina is a deep blue-green fresh water alga–actually, a form of bacteria which contains 60% protein. It also contains a powerful combination of important vitamins and Minerals such as iron, vitamin E, zinc, B-complex, copper, calcium, and magnesuim. It is also a rich source of the antioxidant beta-carotene and the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA).

This “super” algae is a deep blue-green color because of the chlorophyll and phycocyanin. The green pigment is caused by chlorophyll, which is sometimes called “green blood” because it is so similar to hemoglobin. Chlorophyll is thought to soothe inflammation and normalize the secretion of digestive acids. The pigment that gives spirulina its blue cast is phycocyanin, which is related to the human pigment Bilirubin. Bilirubin is important to healthy liver function and the digestion of amino acids. These natural pigments are both easy-to-digest, so the human body can absorb the nutrients quickly. Spirulina is gaining in popularity with environmentalists because this aquatic plant can be grown efficiently without destroying valuable resources.

It’s hard to believe that a concentrated source of nutrients such as spirulina isn’t full of calories, fats, and starches. Amazingly, it is only seven percent fat, and most of that is in the form of essential fatty acids. These essential fatty acids help break up cholesterol in the bloodstream and affect the health of hair, skin, and nails.

Spirulina also contains very little calories, sugar, or starch. The average 500 mg tablet of spirulina contains only one to two calories. It does offer some carbohydrates in the form of rhamnose and glycogn, both of which are easily absorbed by the human body. Thus, the sugars found in spirulina can provide a quick, healthy energy boost.

There has been so much in the news about the pros and cons of innoculations for the flu virusH1N1. I

There has been so much in the news about the pros and cons of innoculations for the flu virusH1N1.

I for one will NOT be getting a shot of a virus to encourage my immune system to build up an immunity.

I keep my immune system strong all year long — and add a bit extra during the cold weather when so many are coughing and sneezing and spreading their “bugs”!

What nutritionals do I take? I take bioavailable nutritionals that I’ve been privileged to use for many years. I trust and respect the pharmaceutical quality of the Inner Care nutritional products. My choices are several: 1) Foundation: a multivitamin-multimineral-antioxidant; 2) Joint Support: at the age of 73 I do have a touch of arthritis in my hands; and in addition I take Spirulina, “Gift from Nature” – an ancient species designed by nature 3.5 billion years ago. With a strong life force, this blue-green algae lives naturally in saline water with a high pH level.

Spirulina contains more than 40 kinds of nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, protein, etc. including phycocyanin, and various nutrients such as Vitamin B12, glycogen (not commonly found in plant food) and significantly higher amount of beta-carotene and gamma-linolenic acid. The cell wall of Spirulina is made of soft easily digestible material while the Chlorella cell wall is made of indigestible cellulose.

Natural cleansing to address dioxin exposure is another major reason why I take Spirulina daily. Dioxin is a common toxin from inescapable sources such as agricultural pesticides, polluted air, water and animal fats — toxins which can accumulate in the body. Dioxin has been linked to premature aging, cancer, birth effects, and other lifestyle-related diseases. Nutrients rich in chlorophyll and dietary fibers also help to accelerate the elimination of dioxins.

When you choose your Spirulina, you want to be conscious of the source and safety of the product, which is determined by a highly standardized toxicity test. Noevir’s Spirulina Maximus has received COAA-Organic Food Factory Certificate, GMP-Food Certificate, and ISP 14001 Certification on the manufacturing process in Taiwan. This Spirulina, free of heavy metals and contaminants, is assured highest quality because of a process called ‘cleaning incubation’ which guarantees cultivation.

Everyone can benefit from taking the highest quality, pure Spirulina, but especially those who have irregular eating and lifestyle habits with an unbalanced diet, are concerned about food safety or lifestyle diseases, those who are on a weight loss program, or those who lack energy or are under stress. Do you fit into one of those categories?

If you want the very best, most effective product, just contact me at: noevirmjg@yahoo.com or go to my website: www.noevirusa.com/margaretgrant My mission is to help people be more healthy.. why not you? Spirulina_06

Green vegetables are legendary for their importance in maintaining good health thanks to substantial

Green vegetables are legendary for their importance in maintaining good health thanks to substantial levels of chlorophyll, naturally occurring vitamins, and minerals. With the Smoothie Essentials Green Blend, you can serve up a quick and easy dose of the most powerful greens.

Chlorophyll and lutein are natural antioxidants that are important in maintaining healthy cell integrity.

Wheatgrass refers to the young grass of the common wheat plant. As many green vegetables do, it provides a source for trace amounts of chlorophyll, minerals, and vitamins. Some consumers grow and juice wheatgrass in their homes but it’s more common for consumers to get their wheatgrass benefits at health food stores and juice stores. The benefit of Smoothie Essentials Green Blend is that it comes in powdered form and can be added to the drink of choice.

Spirulina is believed to have been a food source for the Aztecs and other Mesoamericans until the16th-century. Spirulina occurs naturally in certain tropical and subtropical lakes. It adds to the levels of protein, minerals, essential fatty acids and vitamins.

Before WWII drug stores throughout the country sold tablets of dried barley grass as a primitive form of vitamin supplement. Barley grass acts as a free radical scavenger that assists in the reduction of inflammation and pain.

Chlorella is a component of phytoplankton, which is a very small free-floating aquatic plant found in plankton. Although not commonly recognized in the United States, chlorella is a supplement used extensively in the Orient. Among its many benefits are that it helps stimulate the immune system function and helps detoxify the body.

Alfalfa is an Arabic word which means “Father of all foods.” Historical records reference alfalfa as a dietary supplement across many cultures and with many benefits. Alfalfa is a great source for many vitamins and minerals.

Flax is a tall, green plant that has seeds that are small and brown, similar in appearance to apple seeds. The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine claims that it is “funding studies on flaxseed. Recent studies have looked at the effects of flaxseed on high cholesterol levels, as well as its possible role in preventing conditions such as heart disease and osteoporosis.”

For centuries, the rice bran that encapsulates the white rice within has been used in India to treat various ills among the people. Over two-thirds of the kernel’s nutrients are found in the bran.

Pumpkin Seeds are a natural source for many vitamins and minerals. They are a common treat in many cultures, and the Chinese use pumpkin seeds as a treatment for depression.

With the Smoothie Essentials Green Blend, you can serve up a quick and easy dose of many sources that will boost a healthy diet.

U m u r : 36 tahun
Alamat : Sukabumi
Keluhan : Hepatitis B

Q: Are blue-green algae supplements a good way to get extra nutrients? Dr. David Klein’s response: B

Q: Are blue-green algae supplements a good way to get extra nutrients?

Dr. David Klein’s response:
Blue-green algae supplementation is a serious mistake, especially for those with inflammatory bowel conditions. The supplements come in powder, tablet and frozen liquid form. They are praised for their high quantities of nutrients, including protein and all essential trace minerals, some of which are typically scant in even organically-grown fruit and vegetables. Are these products really suitable for ingestion by humans? After examining the facts, the answer is a resounding “no.” Here are four major reasons why:

1. B12 Analogues
Most researchers concur that the use of inactive vitamin B12 analogues (“fake” B12, or “pseudo vitamin B12”) found in multivitamin supplements containing vitamin B12 as well as spirulina, chlorella and blue green algae, can deplete, destroy and interfere with active (true) vitamin B12 by competing for the same cell receptor sites. (Analogues, as defined by Dorland’s Medical Dictionary 27th Edition, are chemical compounds with a structure similar to that of another but differing from it in respect to a certain component; it may have a similar or opposite metabolic action). In our quest for truth, it is important to differentiate between what is similar and what is authentic.

(Extracted from the Living Nutrition vol. no. 19 article, “Vitamin B12 Deficiency,” by Paul Fanny, H.D., Ph.D.)

2. Phycocyanin
Although some research has shown that blue-green algae contains ample, active vitamin B12 that is usable by the human body, the blue chromoprotein component which contains phycocyanin (an emetic), listed by James Duke in his Handbook of Biologically Active Phytochemicals and Their Activities, is a protoplasmic poison
and should not be ingested.

(Extracted from the Living Nutrition vol. no. 19 article, “Vitamin B12 Deficiency,” by Paul Fanny, H.D., Ph.D.)

3. Salt
Commercially-grown, powderized and tabletized blue-green algae products (e.g., spirulina and chlorella) are cultured in aqueous tanks which are fertilized with raw mineral salts. The mature algae organisms are rinsed with clear water, filtered then heat-flash dried (typically at temperatures near 400 degrees Fahrenheit, rendering them “cooked,” rather than “raw,” products). However, rinsing cannot completely remove all the inorganic minerals salts (including sodium chloride) which adhere to the outer algae cell walls. The resultant algae powder products contain high amounts of toxic salt. Excessive ingestion of these salty products causes internal irritation, swelling of the intestines and other bodily tissues, exacerbation of inflammation and ulcerations, malabsorption, water retention, hypertension, and the other commonly-known associated disease risks concomitant with table salt ingestion.

4. Stimulation
Blue-green algaes typically contain 60% to 70% protein by weight, as well as high concentrations of a host of other nutrients, plus the aforementioned salt. Such high percentages of nutrients and non-nutritious salts are not found in any of human’s natural dietary fare. As such, the products, if taken in quantities exceeding what I’ll loosely characterize as “minute,” will produce toxifying and stimulating effects. The stimulation may manifest as a “high” which typically leads the user into a false sense of wellness. This in turn often leads to an addiction to the supplement(s) as well as disordered eating (alternating cravings for high-protein supplements, salty fare, concentrated sweets, etc.), hyperactivity, neglect of the health-promoting practices essential for true health and, eventually, adrenal exhaustion, enervation and illness.

Avoid blue-green algaes at all cost!

Most people are concerned about money right now. I am in need of an IV drip connected to a money bag

Most people are concerned about money right now.

I am in need of an IV drip connected to a money bag myself. The place where I bartend is only scheduling me for 3-4 shifts a week, and like many restaurants, is struggling.

So one part of determining if raw food eating is “worth” it is the dollars spent. I’ll do my best to give a dollars & cents breakdown on what eating this way is costing me and how it compares to when I ate a “normal” American diet.

Another price to pay for eating raw is taking an honest look at the things you give up to do so. Pizza delivery and cheap beer. Pitchers of mojitos to wash down some gourmet Cuban cuisine. Street food (especially TACO TRUCKS!) BBQ joints…did I mention Taco Trucks?

I knew my moto was back in Cali when I came across this taco truck on a cold night just south of the border. The Oregon border!

Finally, anytime you examine somethings true cost you have to figure out just what the hell you’re getting out of it. AKA…what are the benefits?

So is it worth it? I’m no expert and I can’t answer this (or any other question) for you. But let you inside my abnormally large head and show you exactly how I feel at this juncture about the costs of eating raw…

Today (part 1) will focus on the monetary cost. Tomorrow (part 2) will look at the cost of giving up things you love and are used to…like taco trucks. And in (part 3) I’ll wrap it up with a snazzy cost/benefits analysis (sorry no charts or Excel spreadsheets) that attempts to explore the sometimes measurable, sometimes intangible benefits of a raw food life.

Part One

IS EATING RAW MORE EXPENSIVE THAN COOKED?

First few times you walk over to the raw “section” at the health food store (you know you’ve become a radical marginal member of society when you are shopping in a specialized section of a specialty store) two things will probably jump to your attention…

My first thought was “This is a really tiny section. Not really a section actually, more like an end-cap.”

My second thought was, “Holy shit! $14 for peanut butter!?”

Bulk Items

To make matters worse, a lot of the things you “need” to get started are bulk items. These types of items will probably last you a month, but they require payment in full today.

As an example, I bought a big bottle of spirulina for $43. Two weeks later I’m only halfway through it. But when I

Spirulina bringing someone else back from the dead...

was standing there in the store trying to imagine how bad something that grows on top of a swamp might taste, and ruminating on the sad fact that lately I don’t even make $43 some nights, well lets just say it wasn’t easy to hand over the green required to buy the green. (Spirulinas really more blue-green).

My conclusion? These items aren’t in actuality expensive and can actually make raw eating more economical in some instances. At $1.4o per serving, roughly the price of a Coke, instead of corn syrup, chemicals, and an ingredient list that reads more like toilet bowl cleaner than beverage; you get the most concentrated bio-available protein on the planet.

So, score one for the spirulina and other bulk raw items you might want like cacao nibs, hemp oil, and raw honey.

Pre-packaged stuff VS. Produce

When you are new and trying to “adjust” to raw for the first time you will naturally gravitate to the expensive pre-packaged raw items because they sorta look like what you think foods supposed to look like.

I stood there having a Homer Simpson style conversation with myself that went something like this… “Ahhhh…crackers! I know what crackers are! This is a peculiarly small little bag with only 6 crackers in it…not exactly a Costco size box of Wheat Thins…but it says here…sun-dried tomato crackers…mmm…sounds yummy…and they are only…let me just turn this little package over and find the price….$9! WTF!”

I bought them anyways. Because I was scared of not having what I refer to as “food-food.” And you know what allows you to psychologically pay NINE BUCKS for SIX CRACKERS? The little sticker on the package that says “raw.” And do you know what those crackers taste like, I’ll give you a hint…it’s a 4 letter word…start’s with an “S”…and it’s not sun dried tomatoes!

I’ve been reading a lot of other raw foodists blogs and watching their You Tube channels and tweeting with them and I’m starting to get the feeling that the longer one eats raw, the more likely they are to do almost all of their shopping at a Farmer’s Market, or in a good organic produce section.

My conclusion? Go ahead and buy the pre-packaged stuff. Try it. See what you like and what you don’t. Soon you will save the dehydrated breads and little $4 baggies of superfood trail mix for when you need the convenience or the comfort. Spend the bulk of your dough on fruits & veggies that are pound for pound, yes even at organic prices, the best value for your food dollar.

11/14 UPDATE! Went to Farmer’s Market today and loaded up on fresh veggies/greens/and fruit. I even bought a big jar of raw wildflower honey. Grand Total = $40 Because I’m 100% raw I also got “free” breakfast out of the deal just walking around enjoying all the samples being handed out. When I came home I took everything out and put it on the table so I could see what all I bought. I had to take a picture…amazing isn’t it? The honey will last a couple weeks and I’m sharing this with my girlfriend, so the real cost to me for the week I estimate to be closer to$25!!!

How Much Are You NOT Spending?

This is really fair question to ask, and the one that pushed me over the edge on the money issue. Do this little exercise yourself, and be brutally honest about it.

I added up what I spent each week on:

Coffee. Up to 2 weeks ago I was spending over $6 per day at Starbucks.

Booze. I’m talking drinks out (w/ tips), drinks in, wine, beer, all of it! For me drinking on the cheap was still costing me over $70 per week. And that’s with a job where I can have a drink or two for free.

Cooked food groceries. I love to cook. Shop pretty smart at Trader Joe’s. My share of weekly groceries is about $40 per week.

Eating out. Make sure you include any fast food, lunches out, frozen yogurts, movie popcorn, brunch, all that! I had really cut back lately. In the past my girlfriend and I would grab sushi or Mexican food at least 3x per week. But due to lack of work and recently moving, I’m gonna say I was spending about $25 per week eating out.

Cigarettes. I don’t smoke cigarettes, so this wasn’t an issue with me. But if you do smoke, we’re talking big bucks here, and you ARE going to stop smoking if you go 100% raw. Maybe not immediately, but soon.

Other drugs including prescriptions. In one way or another, to quote Weezer, “We are ALL on drugs.” I like to party, and think recreational substances have their place. But for arguments sake assume you won’t be spending money on that after you get hooked up to nature’s crack–raw food. Also include most (not all, like I don’t think eating raw is going to do anything in the contraceptive department) pharmaceuticals. Especially meds for cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, acid reflux (my GERD is 100% GONE), etc.

So for me…about $200 per week. What’s your total?

So that’s $200 per week that I can apply to eating 100% raw food, drinking fresh-squeezed vibrant juices, and even eating out every so often in a little raw cafe or gourmet raw eatery. $200 is A LOT of vegetables and fruit.

Another aspect of how much it really costs to eat raw vegan organic foods that I hadn’t thought of until I read Derek Markham’s blog today…is all the money not spent at the Doctors office. In his case he acknowledges that as a father he chooses to spend a large portion of his families income on fresh organic food. Derek says, “Our kids deserve the best fuel for their minds and bodies, and eating this way is our ‘health insurance’.” That blew me away.

What I’m NOT suggesting is that you cancel your health insurance (if you have health insurance) and count that as potential savings if you go raw. But imagine the money you, your family, and the country would save by having less sick days, co-pays, depression, and chronic illness…

My conclusion? Money should have nothing to do with whether or not someone chooses to go raw. If anything, I am spending a little less money each week to give my body an abundance of nutrients and delicious food.

Tune in tomorrow if you want to read about some of my misgivings about going (and staying raw long-term), as well as a candid lament about things I’m not sure I can live without (or want to).

Anyone who follows a raw an living food diet inevitably gets the question, ‘Where do you get your protein?’ I just came across this great blog post 20 Raw Vegan Foods to Build Muscle and Lose Fat which outlines some of the best protein sources for people trying to follow a living food diet.

Some of my favorite protein sources include:

Protein powder – Hemp Protein or Sun Warrior Protein

Green superfoods – spirulina, blue-green algae (E3Live) and chlorella

Bee pollen

Hemp seeds

Green leafy vegetables

Avocados

Green superfood powder (all in one concentrate) such as Vitamineral Green

Chia seeds

Almonds, almond butter, almond milk

Soy sprouts

I learned about the benefits of these foods over time and gradually have incorporated them into my diet. Now it is automatic for me to throw some green vegetables and avocado into a blender, make a smoothie with bee pollen, hemp seed and protein powder or mix chlorella or green powder into a juice.

Sampler Package

Awhile ago I got the opportunity to sample a variety of Betty Lou’s snacks. I’m sure some of you have seen some their all-natural snacks at your local grocery store. I can tell you as a college student, pre-packaged snacks are a must for me. I have time to make meals, but what I eat in between is usually something I don’t whip up in the kitchen. Moreover, I usually opt for foods that will keep my energy levels up and going. Which is where these snacks come in the picture.

If you go to their site and see what they have available, you’ll notice they cater to plenty of specialty-diets (wheat corn and dairy-free, no cholesterol, organic, vegan, etc.). On top of that they’ve got a wide array of snacks to choose from. Another interesting thing to note: nothing is made with refined sugar; Perhaps why energy levels don’t crash. I guarantee you’ll find something that’ll spark your interest.

Krispy Bites

First thought? It resembled a Rice Krispy bar, but it’s gluten-free and vegan. Wow! I could taste the peanut butter right off the bat. As a peanut butter lover there are no complaints here. This was an unexpected surprise. Then I read the ingredients and saw that peanut butter was on the list. I actually did a double take at how short the list was. I also love how flavor is bold and delicious and definitely lingers – just makes the goodness last longer once you’re done enjoying this little treat. I just wish it were a bit bigger.

Aside from the awesome packaging, the whiff I got upon opening the wrapper was so comforting – I think it comes from the maple sugar. I knew I was in for a treat. You could eat this on it’s own, but I can also imagine it would be great crumbled on some yogurt. The cranberry’s tartness helped keep this bar from verging on too sweet. It really did taste like I was eating some kind of dessert. The apple one didn’t have too strong of an apple flavor, just a hint of it. It tasted good nonetheless, and it was bit chewier than the other one. And to make everyone happy, both are vegan!

Jumbo Apricot Fruit Bar

This reminded me a of a fig Newton. I could tell there were real chunks of apricot in there as well because it was very chewy, moist, and dense. This bar is also quite tart.

This bar wasn’t too sweet or tart, but it tasted like I was biting into a blueberry slice of deliciousness. I loved how it wasn’t super gooey even after I heated it up.

Don’t be thrown off by the green color of the Spirulina Ginseng Nut Butter Ball. This was good but I don’t know what to compare it to as far as flavors go. Oh! And those are bits of almonds coating it. I love how the nut butter ball has bits of almonds around it the delicious glob of almond butter. It’s not messy at all, and if you like almonds, then this is for you. It’s like those candies you get that have goodness on the inside and out! This is how bursts of energy come – wabam! I enjoyed the Cashew Pecan one while I was at the airport waiting for my flight. I absolutely love the texture of these Nut Butter Balls! I think these are the most common Betty Lou’s products I’ve seen in stores. You should check out the other flavors like Coconut Macadamia! There’s even a high-protein Almond Butter Ball!

I’d like to thank the people at Betty Lou’s for sending me such a great sampler package. I thoroughly enjoyed tasting my way through all the snacks, and I wish I could share the goodness with you all. I guess giving my opinion is the best I can do for right now. So next time you’re out and you see one of many Betty Lou’s snacks – try one!

So, since being home for the past month on my con-leave, I decided to restart my usage of Spirulina.

So, since being home for the past month on my con-leave, I decided to restart my usage of Spirulina. I saw a great sale going on at Swanson, so I got 2 bottles of 180 pills. It came up (with shipping) to around $9.

So far, I’ve been taking it for 4 days now. The first 2 days I was taking 2 pills (1gram) 3x a day. So, I was getting in my 3 grams. From my research, that isn’t much..but basically a dietary supplement. Yesterday, I started taking 3 pills, 2x a day. Same result. I even talked my boyfriend into taking 3pills lol…

Today was a different story. I was doing additional research on spirulina and dosage. I wanted to know how much exactly I should be taking per day. I found alot of information, but basically it all said the same..my little 3g a day wasn’t going to do much for me.

I copy/pasted the following information from this blog about spirulina: http://blog.watershed.net/2009/05/15/spirulina-chlorella-first-foods-of-the-earth-and-the-foundation-of-nutrition-of-great-health/

Best before a meal to aid with digestion.
Spirulina: A maintenance dosage of Spirulina is 3 — 5 grams per day. Although their nutritional profile may appear to be quite similar, Spirulina and Chlorella are completely different foods. Spirulina is great before a physical workout. I take 5 – 6 grams religiously before any kind of physical training. Stamina, endurance and recovery are significantly improved with Spirulina. After a strenuous workout where the body is pushed to its limits, an additional 10 – 20 grams should be taken during the following 24 hours to rebuild the body and muscle tissue that has been torn down.

Spirulina should also be taken 15 – 30 minutes before a meal to help prepare the stomach for proper digestion since it also helps accelerate the reproductive rate of probiotics.

Maintenance Dosage: 3 – 5 grams/day
Significant Part of the Diet: 6 – 10 grams/day
Immune System Builder: 11 – 14 grams/day
Primary Source of Protein : 12 – 19 grams/day
Healing Purposes: 20 – 25+ grams/day

Also great before a workout.

Wow, what great info! There was alot more beneficial stuff that could help someone else (info on spirulina and weight loss).

So, by the time I had read this blog, I had already taken my 3pills 2x for the day. So, before the night is over (it’s 7:30pm now) I plan to take 8 more pills! That way, I’ll have my 7g in! Once I get back to BCT I hope they’ll let me keep my Spirulina. I mean, technically it is an algae/food and not a vitamin supplement (which we cannot have)

I have 1 week left before I return to training. I’ll be tracking my progress for the next week to see how I do!

30 years ago, it was called the ‘food of the future’

Three decades ago, the first algae entrepreneurs were building growing ponds in countries like Mexico, India, Israel, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and the USA.

The first algae food supplements were introduced in the US natural food market in 1979. Growing food with 20 times the productivity as conventional crops, algae promised to become the ‘food of the future’.

The dominant technology for commercial algae production for food and supplements has been open ponds in warm, sunny climates. Over time, some specialty algae products have been cultivated in closed or fermentation systems.

But production costs have remained high due to these factors: using agricultural land, fresh water, clean nutrients, skilled personnel, servicing big investments for pond systems, harvesting and drying infrastructure, and complying with food and quality regulations.

With production costs over $10 per kilo, growing algae is ten times the cost of many commercial foods and feeds. Annual world microalgae output may have reached 10,000 tons of spirulina, chlorella, dunaliella and hematoccocus. Even big commercial algae farms are relatively small, less than 100 hectares in size. Nevertheless, over the years, the number and variety of high value food and specialty products from algae has flourished.

Most people have no idea how many everyday products contain algae.

Algae is an ingredient in thousands of products for food, feed, colors, nutraceuticals, medicinals, cosmetics and personal care, biofertilizers and fine chemicals. Even more innovative algae based products are coming.

The drive for cheap biofuel will make algae the food of the future.

To become the “food of the future”, and compete with conventional human foods and animal feeds, algae production costs must be ten times lower.

Lower costs will deliver healthy algae omega 3 oils and protein food and feed products, rebalancing our diets. We’ll see algae based resins, biopolymers, bioplastics and a range of specialty chemicals replacing today’s fossil fuel chemical products.

The big algae energy investment underway may take a decade to reach commercial biofuels. Algae food and bio-plastic products are likely to arrive earlier, since fuel is one of the least valuable end products. To deliver competitive algae biofuel, companies will need to crush costs to $1/kg or less!

How will algae production costs come down? Biomimicry.

Numerous ventures have now successfully raised a combined billion dollars for algae biofuel R&D and production. Innovations and technological breakthroughs will dramatically change the way algae has been produced over the past 30 years. How?

Discover better performing algae cultures. Thirty years ago, scientists used available natural strains such as spirulina and chlorella. Today, backed by R&D budgets, scientists screen, identify and engineer strains of algae with superior and enhanced properties, faster growth rates, and abilities to grow in conditions such as low light and temperature and high saline, brackish or ocean water.

Develop simpler, less costly design and technology. Rethink, redesign and reengineer the entire growing system, harvesting, processing and drying sequence to reduce capital costs for equipment, operating costs and power consumption.

Use marginal land and water just like nature. To grow algae on the large scale needed to produce biofuels, growers should not use valuable fertile agricultural land and scarce fresh water. Rather, find remnant flat land and ocean, saline, brackish or waste water located near nutrient resources.

Use waste nutrients just like nature. To lower costs, future algae growing systems will have to follow principals of biomimicry. Recycle waste CO2 effluent, animal and plant wastes, which are costly problems today. Ferment agricultural, animal, industrial and waste streams into carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace nutrients to feed the algae. Or grow algae by cleaning up municipal waste.

Use all the algae biomass just like nature. Sell ALL of the algae. Start with the end product and work backwards. What are the products that can be sold, and for how much, and how will markets be developed for those products?

Create multiple revenue streams to offset costs. Environmental services may include CO2 and pollution mitigation, wastewater treatment, biomass and waste heat for generating electricity and even carbon offsets.

Non-fuel algae products may represent the 70% of the algae biomass. Potential revenue streams include algae oil and lipid supplementation in animal and human feed, like healthy omega 3 oils, animal feedstocks and supplements, biofertilizers, fine chemicals and bio-plastics, extracts for pigments nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and medicinals.

Get big. Scale up to thousands of hectares. Algae farms are going to be very large, allowing economies of scale. Along the way, demonstration farms to prove out the technologies will generate revenue streams from non-fuel products for smaller markets.

Exploit the unexpected – carpe diem. Investment drives innovation, creates serendipity and breakthroughs. Who knows what will unfold that we haven’t thought of yet.

So get use to life from the base of the food chain. The dazzling array of eco-products coming from algae will be healthy for you and our planet.

Day 10

**See below for what I ate today and a few more thoughts about raw food.

But today I’m dying to blog about this rabbit hole I fell into less than two weeks ago called “blogging” and the even bigger humungojumbo rabbit hole I fell into a couple nights ago called Twitter.

Jesus! Twitter is like a Bizzaro World vortex, a place with great meaning & a place so banal and meaningless. All wrapped into one supposedly “social” space. I love it! But it is also so crazy self-promoting and weird, you know?

Like me. I turned to Twitter because I thought it would be a good way to expose myself, er, my blog. So after a few crazy cracked out of my mind “don’t bother me here I’m trying to Tweet!” hours I start to see that only people with persona’s and a high level of inter-connectivity sophistication have anyone at all reading their tweets or posts. Makes sense I guess, but to a new blogger/tweeter its also a mix of daunting & depressing.

And then my blog…It sucked! Maybe it still does? So I spent a long sleepless night giving it a makeover: Adding Twitter to it, putting up a cool dinosaur header, posting photos of myself & obligatory cute kitten photos… But it still looks and feels so texty compared to other blogs I’ve been finding which are more sexy.

And for what? It @#$%’s with your head. Why do I care?!? And I think that’s a good question. If you have the answer, PLEASE tweet at me or comment on my blog or introduce me to some other new wild rabbit hole of communication I haven’t had the pleasure of falling into yet…

What I ate today:

Watermelon juice

Smoothie: Strawberries, banana, spirulina, honey

6 superfoods for age-defying beauty:

1) Goji Berries

Goji berries, hollywoods hottest new food, are one of the most nutritionally dense foods on earth and house a staggering concentration of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, phytochemicals and essential fatty acids. With such an awesome constitution it is not surprising they are reputed anti-aging marvels. Originating in Tibet and greatly favoured in traditional medicine these dried berries have many noted health benefits including boosting immunity, lowering cholesterol, enhancing vision, fighting cancer cells, relieving depression and aiding weight loss.

Goji berries contain 500 times more vitamin C than oranges by weight and more beta-carotene than carrots making them a superb source of vitamin A. Together with vitamin E and essential fatty acids, these berries are ideal for any anti-aging and beauty regime. They also contain polysaccharides, one of which has been found to stimulate the secretion of the rejuvenating human growth hormone by the pituitary gland, as well as B vitamins, 21 minerals and 18 amino acids.

The most well documented case of longevity is that of Li Qing Yuen, who lived to the age of 252. Born in 1678, he is said to have married 14 times with 11 generations of posterity before his death in 1930. Li Qing Yuen reportedly consumed goji berries daily.

A study cited in Dr. Mindell’s book ‘Goji: The Himalayan Health Secret’, observed that 67 per cent of elderly people that were given a daily dose of the berries for 3 weeks experienced dramatic immune system enhancement and a significant improvement in spirit and optimism.

2) Aloe Vera

Foget botox, Aloe vera increases collagen production 100% naturally for a youthful, wrinkle-free complexion and plump, beautiful skin. The ultimate botox alternative!

The inner gel of the aloe vera leaf contains around 200 active compounds with over 75 nutrients. These include 20 minerals, 18 amino acids and 12 vitamins (even vitamin B12 – one of the very few plant sources of this vitamin). Aloe vera also has anti-microbial properties fighting fungi and bacteria and houses anti-inflammatory plant steroids and enzymes. Aloe vera is known to aid digestion and elimination, boost the immune system, and be highly effective at healing, moisturizing and rejuvianting the skin, naturally stimulating the production of collagen.

Aloe vera is best eaten fresh when possible (you can order large aloe vera leaves which last a few weeks refridgerated). Scrape out the inside gel, avoiding the outside of the leaf which is a strong laxative, and blend with fruit for the ultimate beautifying smoothie. Aloe vera has a mild flavour though a slight bitter edge, hence is best combined with fruit.

3) Avocados

Avocados are smoothing and softening for the skin and easily absorbed; compared with almond, corn, olive, and soybean oils, avocado oil has the highest skin penetration rate.

Avocado also contains vitamin E (excellent for the skin), antioxidant carotenoids and the master antioxidant glutathione that is exceptionally powerful and has anti-carcinogenic potential. High levels of glutathione are found in the liver where the elimination of toxic materials takes place.

Glutathione is effective against pollutants such as cigarette smoke and exhaust fumes as well as ultra-violet radiation. Research is currently exploring the potential benefits of glutathione for numerous conditions including cancer, heart disease, memory loss, arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, eczema, liver disorders, heavy metal poisoning and AIDS.

4) Chlorella

The nucleic acids RNA and DNA in Chlorella (one of the highest known sources of such) direct cellular growth and repair and enable our bodies to utilize nutrients more effectively, eliminate toxins and avoid disease. The production of nucleic acids in the body declines progressively as we age, which is no doubt why their intake is recommended by Dr. Benjamin Frank in ‘The No-Aging Diet’. Paul Pitchford in ‘Healing With Whole Foods’ writes that ‘insufficient nucleic acid causes premature aging as well as weakened immunity’, Research at the Medical College of Kanazawa in Japan found that mice that were fed chlorella had a 30 per cent increase in life span. Replenishing RNA and DNA can be key to overall health, immunity and longevity.

In addition to nucleic acids, chlorella is jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and amino acids, making it an incredibly rejuvinating and health-promoting superfood. Spirulina is a virtuous equivalent.

5) Bee pollen

When it comes to young and beautiful skin, bee pollen has outstanding gifts. Swedish dermatologist Dr. Lars-Erik Essen uses bee pollen to successfully treat acne and other skin conditions and observes it’s beautifying and anti-aging effects. He reports that bee pollen ‘seems to prevent premature aging of the cells and stimulates growth of new skin tissue. It offers effective protection against dehydration and injects new life into dry cells. It smoothes away wrinkles and stimulates a life-giving blood supply to all skin cells.’ He believes it’s skin rejuvintoin properties are due to its high concentration of nucleic acids RNA and DNA, as well as its natural antibiotic action. Bee pollen has a host of other health-promoting benefits that include fighting infections, lowering cholesterol, strengthening the blood, Boosting the immune system, increasing physical strength and stamina, aiding longevity and enhancing libido! It has been called a ‘prefect food’ because it is so nutritionally complete.

6) Coconut oil

Coconut oil speeds up your metabolism and can actually help you loose weight. It is also incredibly beautifying and moisturizing for the skin and has antioxidant properties which protect against free-radical damage, keeping the skin youthful and healthy. Taken internally or externally coconut oil is a great ally for any beauty skin care regime. It also contains lauric acid, an anti-microbial fatty acid that kills bacteria, viruses and fungi.

I love fall. I don’t know if it’s because my birthday lands on the autumn equinox, appointing me the

I love fall. I don’t know if it’s because my birthday lands on the autumn equinox, appointing me the autumn angel, but I simply love fall. Come October, Sonoma County is graced with wispy, low, early morning fog, headless horseman weather. Through the feathered haze, one can see orange globes, the jewels of the pumpkin patches, dotted across the earth, waiting to be plucked and carved. Clear, blue skies adorn the afternoons, crisply kissing my cheeks. I am reminded winter is around the corner, for the temperature sinks, inspiring me to cuddle up, seeking warmth. The trees shimmer in amber, gold and crimson. They shutter, and it snows dried leaves, littering lawns and streets. Fireplaces are filled; wood is lit, infusing night air with a forest spice. I inhale the nostalgia. The promise of the nearing holidays sooth my soul on a primitive level. I am still that child that loves to dress up for Hallows Eve. I want to be thrilled, chilled and tempted by mystery and sweet treats.

Halloween crept up and rested on a Saturday this year. I spent the day puttering around the house, allowing my domestic whims and the day’s hours to sweep me into early evening.

There is something so pure about a woman who toils in the home, polishing and primping her sanctuary, her nest. She is considered plain to the metropolitan eye. No make-up, hair pulled back, barefoot, wearing jeans and a thin t-shirt, she is dressed perfectly for the occasion. If she finds her work fulfilling, as I do, she glows. She is beautiful in her simplicity, hiding nothing, fanning her true colors like a rainbow across the sky. Her spirit is expansive, and her home fills with her heart. Anyone who walks in will feel it, smell it and be nurtured by it. This was me on Hallows Eve before my witching hour.

Before picture on Hallows Eve

This is me on any given homey afternoon. But, Saturday, October 31, was no ordinary afternoon. Knowing I would go out to see what haunts the holiday had in store, I began my meticulous transformation. I love dressing up, impersonating a fantasy. This year I pieced my costume together partly from my own closet and partly from my Halloween costume collection. I was unsure the outcome; but, I was sure if I followed my soul’s desires, I would create a look that I would find enchanting. I was inspired by a black Parisian gown, my new bindi and a recent interest to decorate myself in henna. The result- I evolved into a French fortune teller named Madame Crystal.

After picture on Hallows Eve

Madame Crystal

Madame Crystal in costume

The evening was visited by many characters. Tricksters and players wondered the darkness, giggling, admiring and delighting. I, myself, sunk deep into the night. The hours clicked by without notice. Before I realized, 3am snuck up and nipped at my ankles. It was time to wash off the evening energies, the thick, black eyeliner and crawl snuggly between my sheets. This little pumpkin head needed to rest.

7am rolled by and parked its carriage next to my bed, waiting to carry me away from slumber. I awoke, thinking how grateful I am that I am RAW. I imagined most of the witches and goblins of Hallows Eve rose to sugar or alcohol induced headaches and sleep filled eyes, but not I. I popped up and met All Saints Day as it greeted me in return with that early morning, low lingering fog I adore. The morning was quiet, for many of the city’s inhabitants were sleeping off the witchy spells of the preceding night. I rolled out of bed and up to my laptop, checking my email first thing. I received a message from We Like it Raw. In it was a link to a Youtube video of Tim Van Orden and Courtney Pool. I watched the 3 minute video titled Spirulina Salad with Courtney Pool. I was immediately motivated to spend my morning gobbling up greens, staining my teeth in an emerald brilliance. How ghoulish, I thought as I chuckled to myself, knowing that I would be one of the few in town who would awake on the morning after Halloween craving sprouts and algae.

The early hours ticked on. I never did get to that salad; though, it is on my list of recipes to make this week. Instead, I filled my morning with errands that kept me out of the kitchen. By 10am, hunger tugged at my stomach. My green salad craving needed attention, calling me into action. Remembering that Café Gratitude opens at 10am on Sundays, I pointed my car towards Healdsburg.

There is something so wonderful about having delicious raw foods made for me. Often, I am the one creating such dishes. When I have the opportunity to relish in such wholesome culinary offerings, I do so with pure graciousness and love. I ordered an entrée called, “I am Fulfilled,” a large salad chock full of greens, sprouts, tomato, cucumber, carrots, beets and avocado, tossed in a creamy, raw, vegan caesar dressing and garnished with a flax cracker.

I am Fulfilled

I felt so at peace while I dined. I gave thanks for my life and the treasures within it. I blessed the season. I blessed the day, World Vegan Day. I blessed my food, and I blessed myself as I slowly ate. I giggled to myself as I enjoyed my abundant salad, thinking it was an odd breakfast choice for the average person. It was a breakfast of champions, a breakfast of raw girls like me. And, what do raw girls like me do after nibbling up a robust salad? Well, they order dessert, of course!

raw cacao hazelnut pie

Featured here is Café Gratitude’s raw cacao hazelnut pie. It was divine. I can happily report, I have embraced autumn and the first festive holiday of the season without a single piece of commercial candy. Fresh raw desserts are my treat of choice. I sat in the restaurant, delighting in the raw chocolate goodness, grateful for its availability. Pure bliss was gobbed on the end of my fork; and as I slipped each bite of the rich chocolate between my lips, I could think of little more than how wonderful is life.

I love fall and everything it represents.

Cherish your life. Everything is a gift. Treasure it all. Honor your inner child. Play. Love. Celebrate.

Day 4 Almost Halloween…working in the service industry blows…you are always worki

Day 4

Almost Halloween…working in the service industry blows…you are always working when the other 90% of the world is partying. Friend from L.A. called today asking if I could come do the West Hollywood Halloween party thing…had to give the “I’m working all weekend” depressing answer.

And, unfortunately this year I’m bartending the whole weekend in a rather geriatric setting–an old school Italian restaurant/piano bar where the patrons sing the same Frank Sinatra type melodies over and over and over…like groundhog day with gin & meatballs. The old piano player is cool though. He gets hammered and is anything but “PC” with his Obama jokes as he reaches up the old ladies dresses when they stand next to the piano to sing.

Woke up today at 1pm–felt shitty & cold. No other way to put it. Didn’t feel like eating anything, especially cold raw food. Picked up a book and fell back asleep.

At 2pm I had my first meal, and my first experience with spirulina. Talk about Halloween ghoulish! The coolest, strangest, blue-green stuff I’ve ever seen in a blender. Wild. The label on the glass container it comes in says “Spirulina is a HARD-CORE superfood.” I will go so far to say spirulina is XXX! I’m pretty adventurous with food and I was afraid to drink it. My girlfriend screamed and ran away. I blended a heaping tbs with a whole banana, a tbs of raw honey, a tbs of cacao nibs, and a tbs of almond butter (with water and ice). All I can say after drinking it…I think I finally met God…and Her name is Spirulina…

Here is a spirulina link to a web page that goes into great detail about the science and evolution of spirulina, it’s only one page (so you should read it) and makes me want to ingest a lot more of this stuff…was it the “manna” from God those wandering Israelites never stopped complaining about having to eat?

What I ate today:

Spirulina Smoothie!

Pear

Lara Bar

Apple

Giant Salad: Spinach, Lettuce, heirloom tomatoes, avocado, Greek olives, olive oil, lemon, black pepper, mustard, rawmesean.

Brownie smoothie: This one turned out amazing…1tbs raw cacao powder, 1 tbs raw honey, 1 tbs raw almond butter, small handful raw walnuts, 1 tsp coconut oil, 3 figs, ice & water. Like fudge!

One note. It was chilly tonight and very difficult on my bike ride home from work to wrap my head around not having hot food. It also wasn’t easy skipping the normal routine of sitting down after my shift and making myself and the people I work with a nice stiff drink…they all seemed a little hurt when I told them I was going to have to skip it.

We had a whole plan for getting the word out about this delicious product but the buzz has been growing so fast we haven’t had a chance! You can even see a great video by Renegade Health Show about them. Despite all the buzz I thought it would still be great to have a detailed post dedicated to these crunchy bits.
Spirulina Crunchies, like traditional powdered or tablet spirulina, is a pure, natural, nutrient dense, microscopic, edible, blue-green algae packed with complete and
absorbable protein, chlorophyll, antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals. It is a balanced whole food that contains over 100 synergistic nutrients that are easily assimilated. It is literally at the bottom of the food chain – a concentrated “nutrient soup” from which all life can be nourished.

So what makes Spirulina Crunchies so different?
Well, lots actually.
1.	It is crunchy! – this makes it so much more fun to eat. Try sprinkling it on your salad. It stays crunchy and adds a savory flavor (kinda like bacon bits). No gloppy green salad blues that you may get when putting powder on your salad.
2.	It is a Spiral – Spirulina derives its name from its microscopic spiral structure. Because of the manual, additive-free process of creating Spirulina Crunchies, its inherent spiral structure stays intact. Spirulina Crunchies are the only Spirulina that is not pulverized which compromises spirulina’s delicate structure.
3.	It is Vital – Spirulina Crunchies are low-temperature heat dried to keep bacteria levels in check and to preserve the vital nutrients. Did you know that the leading brand selling their Spirulina as “raw” actually plummet the temperature below 0 degrees C in order to preserve it? Such an extreme temperature certainly affects the nutrients.
4.	Savory Flavor – Spirulina Crunchies are more mild in flavor. They taste fresh and yummy. (Never again will you have to hold your nose and endure a slightly fishy flavor)
5.	Did we mention its CRUNCHY! – you gotta experience it! Spirulina in a whole new way. No-additives. Pure Green Goodness!

Daily feed for your discus should contain different and varied types of food source to ensure best g

Daily feed for your discus should contain different and varied types of food source to ensure best growth and proper color development. Depending on where you live, searching for constant supply of clean feed such as bloodworms is very important. Avoid getting supply of food that is bred in contaminated water because that will cause your fish to be sick and infected with unwanted aquarium disease. I’ve known some serious breeders who actually keep and cultivate their own supply of bloodworm so that they don’t run out of food for their fish.

Other than bloodworms, you can also consider mosquito larva and daphnia to be part of the diet schedule. Your discus will love them but the only problem with that is about getting enough supply to feed all your fish. Usually what you can do is that if you have ponds nearby where you live, you can easily source and collect it everyday. If not, you can also create an artificial culture tank outside your garden so that you can collect the food. However, be forewarned about the dangers lurking because cultivating mosquito larva means you are potentially exposing yourself to mosquito bite and without constant maintenance, it could instead turn into pest breeding ground.

Besides the list that I’ve mentioned, spirulina supplement is also perfect if you have intention to breed champion discus fish. Spirulina can be found by purchasing in boxes sold in aquarium pet stores in powder or flake form. When fed to your pets, the fish will exhibit bright coloration and prolonged use can greatly enhance the alertness and overall activity of the fish. Another form of Spirulina is sold together as addition mixed into some fish pellets and I would recommend getting this kind of food as it can be easily ingested.

Finally, with all the rich food that you put into the tank, make sure that the water stays clean all the time. If this is not followed through with proper water change and filter washing, benefits of having the right food will just go to waste.

With a name like Amazing Grass, I expected these energy bars to taste like dry lawn clippings pressed into the familiar rectangle I associate with flavorless meals-to-go. Luckily, I was wrong! These too-healthy-to-be-tasty sounding bars are amazingly good.
