Recently, I got to work as a security volunteer for Splash. Splash is an put on by the MIT Educational Studies Program (ESP) where undergraduates teach anything they want to middle and high school students over a weekend.

When I volunteered, I had really no idea what security actually did and was only in it for a fun morning and a free top hat. When I got there, I was put to work helping lost students find there way to registration and then working as a general odd-jobs person. However, I soon got recruited to help answer the security hotline, and soon I was assigned to be assistant to the girl who was head of security. That was a lot of fun. I got to help run logistics and handle relative emergencies for and event with over 2,300 attendees. I left on Saturday afternoon to go study chem with the resolve to come back the next day.

When I got there Sunday morning, I promptly reported for duty. When the security director saw me, she immediately said, “Oh, you’re here. I’m putting you in charge.” So until 12:30, I was in the security headquarters running logistics, fielding phone calls, and helping coordinate things.

One of the weirdest requests I fielded was a call from a teacher in the middle of a class asking us to buy sushi fish. The second oddest event was when we discovered that one of our teachers knew nothing about Splash and that he had been signed up as a practical joke!

It was a really fun weekend, and if ESP ever need security again, I’ll definitely volunteer.

El Splash es una representación tridimensional del impacto de una gota de agua contra el suelo. Diseñado por el equipo Program Collective,  se construyó con motivo de la Exposición Internacional de Zaragoza 2008 y se ubicó -como puede verse en las imágenes, tomadas hace algo más de un año- en el diáfano y enorme interior de la Torre del Agua, convirtiéndose pronto en uno de los iconos de la Exposición.

Los contenidos de la Torre del Agua como espacio expositivo se cedieron a la CAI (Caja de Ahorros de la Inmaculada) que, rápidamente, ordenó el desmantelamiento y desalojo del Splash (seguro que pensando en la compra e instalación de alguna escultura de tamaño similar de autores de mayor renombre…). En fin, el Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, aplicando su particular concepción de los términos gasto y ahorro, ha decidido almacenar la obra a la espera de su futura reubicación, no se sabe muy bien dónde, ni se sabe muy bien cuándo. Por lo menos no la van a fundir y ceder el metal a la CAI para que construya tres o cuatro plantas intermedias en la Torre del Agua dedicadas a clientela VIP… 

It is designed by Adam Turecek / Aaad Academy Of Art Architecture And Design Prague. This project was from Prague. I am interested in industrial design but not much. I really found itself creative and elegant. Also, the splash have a different tune in a good way.

Archie the dachshund apparently loves his pool.

Lap after lap, round and round he goes.

The rhythmic splashing sounds he produces while making his steady laps around this kiddie wading pool are soothing to me for some reason.

It’s a week for mixing water and animals apparently. To see another animal enjoying splashing around, check out my this post from earlier in the week of an elk calf playing in a mud puddle.

During the Summer I got to do some photography with the South Connections Carnival Mas Band based in Oval, London.

One of my close mates has been dancing with them for many years and has been to many Carnivals throughout the years. This year I asked if I could come around with them and do some Photography after hearing one of their usuals had left.

They welcomed me with open arms and invited me to many events including Carnival Splash (pictured above) at Alexandra Palace. This is where all the Carnival Mas Bands get together and showcase their new costumes to a panel of judges before Notting Hill Carnival Itself. I had great fun watching all the Bands set up all their costumes and photograph the members of South Connections getting ready, rehersing, performing and relaxing after the long day.

We were then treated to an after event performance from some of the top names in the Soca world.

Hi guys, just a quick, but hopefully very useful message… I’ve found a repository which holds Bootsplash patches for every 2.6 kernel currently in existence! No longer will you have to trawl the Internet for hours trying to find a suitable patch!

And in unrelated news, I have to admit that it wasn’t until the Kanye/Swift rift took place that I even knew who Taylor Swift was. Again, I wondered if I was reading about a man? Or perhaps some sort of cartoon character like Jimmy Neutron? Then Kanye decided he’a let her finish, and now the entire world knows who TS is. Which is nice, because now I also know the difference between TS and Colbie Caillat, since- to my ears- they too sound the damn-same! Upon further investigation, I found that not only do these girls sound alike, they also look like other famous folks. Alas, poor Miley Cyrus will  only always look like Billy Ray minus mullet (for now), plus boobies.

PS- why does it look like Taylor Swift has already had some form of eye lift surgery? Isn’t she only like, 17?

This was shot last Sunday at Prayag ghat along the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).
I believe that it was the last very hot day of the year here and many people came to river in order to find a way to feel fresh.
This woman was pouring the holy water on her, I took several pictures as the colours were coming so well.

I’ve decided to shoot some splash shots using milk as a reference for an upcoming Illustration assignment I have to do soon. I didnt really get the exact shot I was hoping for but definitely came up with some good ones. Good enough to use as reference separately.
This specific shot you see above was my first shot and came out so well. I poured the milk a bit too late but it definitely turned out to be a beautiful accident.

Vigilantism is not encouraged by most of Western society. Which is odd considering how well movies about vigilantes (i.e. “The Dark Knight”) rake at the box office.

Who is “The Sea Shepherd Society”? Nothing more than a group of concerned citizens that has waged a jihad (“Now batting for Allah, Gaia!”) against Japanese whalers.

One of the vigilantes activists is none other than Daryl Hannah who I guess is just getting back to her roots (right)?

Whaling is part of Japanese culture. How integral? I don’t know, but who are we to tell them what they can or can’t do in international waters?

Incidents between the “Sea Shepherds” and Japanese whalers in the past have resulted in people getting hurt.

These Hollywood types are really something else. They seem to pontificate about how there is no right and wrong, yet there are plenty of things they seem to find “wrong”. So much so that they take extreme measures to battle whatever they deem as “wrong”, multiculturalism be damned.

Much closer to home, why aren’t they protesting the ritual slaughter of lambs by Muslims and Jews? You wouldn’t need a bulletproof Bat Boat to do it either, but for sure it’d upset the apple cart much more than protesting a distant nation’s customs.

To paraphrase a fictional Politburo member: “Where are the cultural relativists here!?!”
