A couple weeks ago I tried to dye my hair purple using Special Effects, which is usually a pretty good brand. It didn’t take very well, although I got some highlights. I felt a bit like a My Little Pony. In a good way!

I feel even more like a My Little Pony right now. A slightly hung over My Little Pony.

Coffee goooood. (Okay, I’m not actually hung over. But I’m a mess anyway.)

I came to the USA for my mom’s birthday party, and my faded Pony hair just wasn’t going to cut it, especially as the party was hippie-themed and everyone was going to be in tie-dye. Plus I had an awesome dress. So I stopped by Ricky’s and picked up a box of Splat in the shade ‘Lusty Lavender’. I”d never heard of this brand so I kind of expected it to be crud. I was wrong.

Holy cow, this stuff is strong. The bleach that came with it was much better than the stuff I’ve found in actual bleaching kits, possibly because those are aimed at wannabe-blondes while this is for freaks like me who want their hair white before we put on funky colors. Hurt so good.

The dye itself was also freakishly strong. I don’t normally bother to vaseline my hairline, but I did with this stuff. I kept accidentally touching the nozzle of the bottle with exposed skin and then spending five minutes scrubbing the purple stain off, even though I caught it immediately. The back of my neck is going to be purple for a couple more showers, I’m sure.

It didn’t come out like the color on the box – I have a ton of pink! But I think this is the result of how it reacted with the bleach and the dye I already had on. And I love it. I think this is my favorite dye job yet.

The only negative comment I have is that I really didn’t like how the different ingredients were packaged. For the bleach, you need to pour some powder into a bottle of liquid. But the opening on the bottle is quite small, and the powder just comes in a rip-open paper sachet, and doesn’t pour out smoothly. It’s practically impossible to pour it in without spilling some over the place, and these are harsh chemicals we’re talking about. On a related note, I don’t think I’ll bleach my hair in bare feet again, especially when I’ve got a big cut on my toe.

Overall, taking the risk on an unknown brand – definitely worth it. I’d totally try some other colors of Splat. Wonder if I can get it in the UK.
