On my first visit to Twigs, I got the impression of an upscale boutique with a bright, insanely chic, New York City feel. I was enticed by the artistic chandeliers made from branches (twigs!) and the crisp structure of the store’s setup. Jewelry is displayed elegantly in glass cases and designer handbags are placed on shelves above the garments.

Ironically enough, Twigs owner Jen Van Wart and I grew up in the same town…small world! After chatting for a bit, she was kind enough to answer some questions I was anxious to ask…

BRAVA: What is one piece of advice for transitioning from fall into winter?
Jen: I highly recommend tights and boots. Also, be sure to layer with cardigans and jackets…think cashmere.

BRAVA: What is a cold weather favorite you have this season?
Jen: The infinity scarves for only $26!

BRAVA: When shopping at Twigs, what kind of mood do you want the store to set for  your customers?
Jen: Put simply, Twigs is like a bigger, better version of all our closets. There’s truly a bit of everything and definitely something for everyone. Ultimately, it’s a super-edited, family-owned boutique. We love helping our customers find just the right thing. We even keep dog treats and toy bins at the ready for our smallest of visitors!

Coincidentally, I also attended the launch of a new line for Twigs, called Emu Australia, and I was able to chat briefly with director of sales Lea Kalani about the new line.

BRAVA: What is the philosophy behind the brand?
Lea: Surf and Sheep. EMU’s materials are all derived right out of Australia. Most people don’t know this but EMU was the original “UGG” brand. The word “UGG” came from the original term, ugly…which is how Australians described the first sheepskin footwear. EMU is about the brand heritage and representing the “Naturally Australian” quality sheepskin and wool.

BRAVA: What can we expect out of the fall/winter 2009 clothing line?
Lea: The women’s clothing division is the newest addition to the company. The pieces are still luxurious, made from the finest merino wool, but are also machine washable and very durable. Unlike itchy wool, our Merino wool is extremely soft, versatile and, in some cases, lightweight. We’re previewing our spring collection here at Twigs, including a black tank that’s made from wool. You would never guess it’s wool, but it is!

BRAVA: What is your favorite piece right now?

As you may have gathered from my previous articles, I am a shopaholic.  Even if I have no money, I can’t help but scour the internet for deals at the online sample sales (seriously, check out Ideeli, it’s amazing).  And even though I can’t always buy sustainable products, I still try to buy in sustainable ways.

Here are my favorite shopping tips to don’t just save the environment, but they can also save you money.

Read on, my fellow “Frugalista” (thank you, Target.)

Shop in stores.  Preferably ones you can walk or carpool to.  Retailers get their shipments in bulk, which decreases the amount of packaging material used to deliver the products.  When you shop online, shipping costs (and all that wasted paper and cardboard) can add up quickly, so spare yourself and hit the local mall (with your reusable tote!). Be sure to try on before you buy so you can avoid the extra gas needed to return something to the store.

Look for local labels.  Try to buy from companies that are based in the your state to cut down on energy needed for transportation.  If that’s not possible, look for brands that produce their products within the United States.  American Apparel, C&C Cailfornia, Splendid, J.Crew, Lucky Jeans, Joe’s Jeans, True Religion, Juicy Couture, 7 For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, and Rock and Republic (just to name a few) all manufacture their clothing in the U.S.

Shop smart online.  If you’re going to shop online, be sure you do it in an ecologically responsible manner by using the following tips.

Buy in bulk. Wait until you have a large order before ordering online or combine with friends to save on the environmental and financial costs of shipping.

Ditch the rush order stress. Plan ahead so you don’t have to choose expedited shipping over standard shipping rates.  This also gives the Postal Service a chance to fill up their trucks with packages before shipping them out.  More packages = fewer cross-country trips = a happy planet.

Choose your delivery address wisely. Be sure to have your packages delivered to a convenient address.  If you have them delivered to your apartment, for example, be sure that your roommates will be around to pick it up for you.  If they aren’t available, leave a note on the door telling the postman that he can just leave the package on the doorstep without a signature.  This avoids the annoying and fuel-guzzling trips back and forth to the Post Office.

Switch to Paperless Statements. Once all your earth-friendly shopping is done, you’re going to have to pay that credit card bill. But make Mother Earth proud and do it all online. No more 5-page bills coming to you in the mail. No more wasted paper (and money!) on mailing that check back to the company. It’s the greenest way to pay.

Er jeg den eneste, der er begyndt at småfryse gevaldigt på de efterhånden temmelig kølige efterårsaftener? Vi er kun lige gået ind i oktober, og jeg har allerede flere gange overvejet at tænde for varmen i min lejlighed. Jeg har dog fundet tre skønne striktrøjer og cardigans, som kan holde mig varm lidt tid endnu – i yndlingsfarverne blå, grå og sort.

Whether you’re a designer denim expert or a newbie just breaking in your first pair, we have a few tips for you to get the most out of your favorite, fabulous jeans.

Buying Designer Denim:

1. Between Sizes? ALWAYS size down to the smaller stretch. No matter the denim or the marketing:) your designer denim will always stretch 1/2 to a full size.

2. Hemming. If you are perfectly 5′8″ with gorgeous gazelle legs you don’t need to read this and yes, we all dislike you a little bit right now, but if not take note. Hemming is privilege. You get the opportunity to personalize your jeans to fit you just perfectly. So, original hem or basic, the debate begins. Well, there really isn’t any debate at all.

Original Hem

Any denim with any kind of distressing or change in coloration below the hem should be hemmed with the original hem, where a good seamstress will cut off the original hem and reattach it immaculately.

Basic Hem

The basic hem works for all over super dark denim and is made even better with a good seamstress who will make it her passion to match the stitching perfectly.

3. Washing vs. Dry Cleaning: A lot of denim is now being sold with care tags that list dry cleaning as the preferred option for cleaning your denim. I, personally, am notorious for washing and drying my jeans and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. In fact, when denim has stretched out I need for it to shrink back. You also have the option to hang to dry.

In my opinion, dry cleaning is a way for designer denim companies to cover their bums. Dry cleaning can actually be far more damaging to your clothes in the long run than some good old fashioned water. I do recommend washing inside out to maintain color and washing on a gentle cycle. Do NOT wash you jeans after every wear, it is not necessary.

As for dry cleaning. Do it if you are a little anal and think it’s a must do and because a lot of your jeans are now telling you to do it. But, please don’t do it often for the sake of that beautiful indigo cotton.

Final note on natural indigo dye. It will rub off on clothes, shoes, couches, etc. Make sure you wash it alone or with other dark denim in its first wash to deal with some of the left over dye. After that, be aware that some denim will leave a residue so don’t wear them with your favorite suede shoes while skipping through the rain (I have some fucshia suede heels that will tell you quite the sob story)

Last (I swear this is the last thing): Enjoy your designer denim, love it, admire it and check out your bum often in it just because it looks that good.

I love love loooove this skirt from Parisian designer Tara Jarmon. I found it several years ago at a boutique in Tulsa on drastic sale. When I was a student in Paris, I loved to go into the TJ shops and ooh and aah over the pretty, girlish clothes. Isn’t the pin detail on the skirt adorable? It serves no function – just pretty!

Up until recently, I knew exactly where my life was headed. What exactly I’d be doing in a few days or even months. But now, I don’t know. And I think, I like not expecting the expected. It’s a change of pace.
