and work… urg.

The 26th at 6pm starts my wonderful career back at my 12 hour job. is about how it feels.

Tonight I wrote a chapter re-write. YES, right? kinda. Got to the end of it and realized that I didn’t want to ditch as much of the original concept for it. It starts out with someone going back to work. Who knew. I didn’t plan it either. So not too hard to write. It was to have an eating section and start out at the job area. The re-write took it to the girl’s room, ditched the eating and went to the job at the end of it. I decided I want to keep the eating scene as it shows some important details and it makes sense. I now have to go back again….. and splice the two together. I am thinking of re-writing the eating scene which should make the splicing easier. I want to keep a lot of what I wrote tonight. I might re word it a bit or give it more detail but overall want the idea/concept to stay.

So tomorrow if I can get up early enough without feeling too overwhelmed, I might write before work. I probably won’t write the next day but luckily I have the weekend off and I am thinking part of next week off due to the New Year. That should help to keep me on schedule.

hmmmm…. or maybe I’ll just do the scene over before bed so I can at least not worry about it for a while and start on the next chapter. ………………………………………..

Yep, drafts are endless.

How to be a movie extra – secrets finally revealed as a movie extra? This is an issue that involves a multitude of activities relating to development of the entire career action. But in order to develop a career, you need to prepare for future auditions. As you may already know, preparing for tests mainly include building a large portfolio, which should include an abstract and your best photos and videos possible. Just like you have a wonderful portfolio, you should start looking for extras needed. Yeh Salli Zindagi movie review Besides being a well-made film Hazaaron Khwahishen AISI once great seriousness attached “Sudhir Mishra Film A”, but the high subsequent another story. Yeh Saali Latest Mishra Zindagi is a messy job cutting that makes you wonder if half decade offering Mishra is a seminal time in life. Among a million characters and locations Yeh Saali Zindagi that represent the film is about desperate people in desperate times or something. Rags to Riches Movie Stars – how they got their big break and became successful Halle Berry was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1966, a mother and became the first woman of African American descent to get the best actress award. It is one of the largest paid actresses in Hollywood, and a spokesman for Revlon and has been for more than ten years. After graduating school Halle Berry worked in the children’s department in a department store. Movie Extras – The ups and downs of a movie extra is an actor who appears in the background of the film. This background actor appears insignificant capacity as a face in the crowd scenes, busy street, and so on. This role requires very little acting experience if any. Why posters modern cinema not as good as B movie classic posters from the past? Modern movie posters are rubbish! They have no pretensions life, color, inventiveness, or artistic work, they just have a job to do and that is clear and concise view movie format typical poster to advertise the fact that he is showing in a cinema near you, now or in the near future. Endpoint. Period. Bored!
Now you can insult the church and rape nature at the same time from the comfort of your home. How cool is that?

Dr. Mario VS God is a puzzle game by Cipher Prime in which you have a limited amount of moves to splice cells in order to meet a predetermined pattern.

That’s it, really.

The puzzles get harder and harder, while some new cells appear that react differently to every splicing action. It’s a pretty comfortable puzzler, actually, since you can scroll back and forward in time from the last place you screwed up. With all its sleekness and relaxing environment, you’d think this is a pretty laid back game.

Well, it isn’t.

Cellbots, assemble!

The logic of the splicing isn’t easy to get, and even when you do, the subsequent combination of results is as easy to predict as the weather on Mars. This splits the gameplay of My Little Mutation into careful thought patterns and I’ll keep wasting dead baby stem cells by screwing up over and over until I randomly get it right.

Dain Saint provides a soundtrack that is both fitting and cliché, reminding me of the more sober kind of genius-at-work montages. Pretty, enveloping, discretely ominous, but still a pain to have to rewind along with the game when you want to go back a move or two. I understand the effect, but if the music is supposed to help concentration by easing one’s mind into the game’s pace and tough challenges, making it WHURRZIP every time you need to undo something gets tiresome quite quickly.

I’m planning to spend most of this week digesting, and frankly, that gets in the way of long, rambling, and expletive-filled reviews. Fortunately, in the two years Now Fear This has been alive and well, I’ve written thirty-two long, rambling, and expletive-filled reviews. So this Thanksgiving weekend, if you’re looking for something terrifying to watch that maybe you haven’t heard of, browse through this list of (mostly) horror gems.

Attack the Block: Aliens attack a London slum, and it’s up to an embryonic street gang to save the day.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon: A mockumentary on the making of a supernatural serial killer in the tradition of Jason, Freddy, and Michael.

Breakdown: Kurt Russell misplaces his wife in the middle of the desert, and it’s up to him to take her back from a group of late ‘90s character actors.

The Brood: Having kids never seemed so fun and easy in this Cronenberg classic!

Brotherhood of the Wolf: Possibly the finest horror romance period piece kung fu action flick ever made.

Bubba Ho-Tep: Elvis and JFK fight a mummy in a Texas rest home.

Centurion: Extremely sexy people battle it out in Iron Age Scotland.

Chillerama: Highly offensive and extremely funny horror comedy anthology.

The Company of Wolves: Neil Jordan’s fairy tale phantasmagoria that’s probably his way of dealing with sexual abuse.

The Descent: A modern classic of survival horror so scary it barely even needs its monsters.

Dog Soldiers: Werewolves hunt British soldiers through the Scottish highlands.

The Ghost and the Darkness: Building a bridge is tough when you’re dealing with two of the worst serial killers in history who also happen to be lions.

The Gift: A creepy Southern Gothic gem from the minds of Sam Raimi and Billy Bob Thornton.

Ginger Snaps: Lycanthrophy serves as a metaphor for puberty for a pair of gothy Irish twins.

Insidious: An eerie gore-free ghost story from the guys behind Saw.

Joe Versus the Volcano: A sweet romantic fantasy about the importance of dreaming big.

The Mist: Though adapted from a Stephen King novella, this is one of the best Lovecraft movies ever made.

Mute Witness: Hitchcockian yarn about a mute woman targeted for death by Russian snuff film makers.

My Boyfriend’s Back: It’s a one joke picture, but you gotta admit the joke is pretty funny.

Predators: Basically an episode of Deadliest Warrior with fucking Predators.

Session 9: This whole goddamn movie is haunted.

Splice: Why you should never use metaphor with your mutant.

The Strangers: Lock the doors, bar the windows. Doesn’t matter. They’re already in the house.

Trollhunter: The best found footage movie ever made.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil: Ingenious hicksploitation parody that gives us The Texas Chain Saw Massacre from Leatherface’s point of view.

28 Weeks Later: A lesser film than its predecessor, though it still has plenty to recommend it.

Nice!

Great product! The Jet Black and fire iridium goggles are awesome! The lenses look great and the viewing angle is very wide, no more blind spots. They seem very well put together and the fire iridium coating is a step above the competition! Only two cons (very minimal) scratches kind of easy and it does, at least for me, put a little more pressure on the bridge of my nose then I’m used to. Overall a great buy. 5/5 And one more thing to add is the carrying bag that it comes w/… It’s a small sof

Here’s a sweet picture to linger on to for a while. Awesome capture of some fabulous work.

Here’s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, five tiny, tiny mariners in the process of making an eye splice on a 4″ inch rope. They seem quite jolly even though under the watchful eyes of a well dressed officer who has his smooth hands conveniently tucked behind his back.

Ok. The real capture is like this:
The year is 1941 and workers in HMC Dockyard is splicing a 20″ hemp cable.
(Library and Archives Canada)

Yes, hemp, this wonderful natural fiber that sailed the seas, clothed(ships and people), nourished and lightened as well as enlightened people and their homes for thousands of years, before being recklessly banned by the US government in 1937 and by the UN who was forced to follow in 1961.

This plant is enormously versatile and can be used to produce over thousand of products, many of which today are petroleum based. Which is also a big reason why it was banned, of course.

Hemp is real nice to sail and to work with. There ain’t nothing like it, actually. To feel the tension of the smooth, tarred rigging stretching and living while you’re running up there to take a reef is a spectacular feeling of being a part of a big living creature, that surges over the wild sea, which is indeed living too.

Right now you might be thinking that this sounds a lot like what you have felt on a ship with petroleum-based rigging, which is probably true…. I kind of got of on a tangent there.
But hemp is amazing. To work with a running and standing rigging in hemp has a special feeling and you have to learn how it acts and reacts and when you do you get the feeling that it is indeed working with you to tackle every situation the best way.
And when you think about the craftmanship being put into the making of the rope, and even try some rope making yourself, every strand and every single yarn is needed in that special place and in that precise condition for this one purpose, it is pretty stupendous.

The past few weeks we’ve been studying prefixes for verbs, in particular, a lot of everyday ve

The past few weeks we’ve been studying prefixes for verbs, in particular, a lot of everyday verbs, such as all the verbs of motion: Russian has a specific verb for pretty much every way to ‘go’ somewhere. As well as words like strike, break, chop, combine, pour, lift, wipe, cut, tear, sew, cross…etc. Our teacher calls them ‘household’ verbs. Adding prefixes to these exponentially increases your vocabulary, because then you can say ‘pour in, pour out, pour around, pour together, pour into a new container, pour away, etc…Not to mention new abstract meanings added to verbs like ‘think’ ‘talk’ and ‘give’.

I encountered another fantastic linguistic connection with the word плести/ples-ti. Unprefixed, I’d had trouble remembering what it meant: to weave or braid. It’s the verb used to talk about making lace or baskets etc. (Interesting side note: wiktionary also lists a figurative meaning, to lie. None of the other online dictionaries nor my oxford ‘pocket’ dictionary lists this as a meaning. Need to check with a Russian, but I like the idea that плести could be used to describe the process of lying, like weaving a tale…)

Last week we were covering the various meanings for the prefix ‘С’ (pronounced like an s), one of which is ‘together’ or ‘with’. This creates the verb сплести/sples-ti, with the meaning: to weave/braid together. And the /sples/ sound went burrowing back into my brain and turned around and came out my mouth with “Oh! Like splice. To splice together.”

Sples/splice.

So my question is, did these words come from the same root somewhere in latin/greek, or are they so similar by chance?

Thanks to my Uchicago link to the online oxford english dictionary, I was able to look up the etymology of the english word:

Etymology: < Middle Dutch splissen, of doubtful origin, but perhaps related to split v.; in the Continental languages now represented by Dutch dialect, Low German and German splissen, West Frisian splisse, North Frisian splesse, splasse, Swedishsplissa; also German spleissen, splitsen, Dutch splitsen, Swedish splitsa, Danish splidse. The Dutch word is also the source of French épisser (†épicer), whence épissoir splicing-iron, and épissure a splice.

Here’s what I found for the Russian word:

From Proto-Slavic, cognate with Bulgarian плета, Serbo-Croatian плести/plesti, Slovene plesti, Slovak pliesť. Non-Slavic cognates include German flechten, Latin plecto, Ancient Greek πλέκω (“to plait”). (wiktionary)

I find it interesting that the etymology for the Russian word goes back to Latin and Ancient Greek, while the list for the English word does not. Have I just not found it? Maybe splice does not come to english from the latin ‘plecto’, (my first assumption was that the Russian and English were related through latin or greek). Is it possible that these verbs for such a specific action developed independently to have similar sound and meaning? I guess I don’t know enough about the development of Germanic/Dutch languages and their relationship to latin and ancient greek…

*shuffles through the internet*

Here’s what I’ve found so far:

To be sure there were Latin influences on ancient German. The trade of ancient times, the technical knowledge and the political influence the Romans had, brought a number of Roman words into German, even in ancient times. Also certain areas of today’s German peoples had been conquered by Rome and through those areas a good deal of Latin came into German.

But German, like Latin itself, is an ancient language, about as old in its origins as Latin. Actually the ancient languages (German, Latin, Greek, Slavic) all came from a common mother tongue called Indo-European. At some time around 3,500 years BC the common language of Europe seems to have started to split and develop into separate language families. Linguists think that by about 750 BC there was a well developed and distinct Germanic language in Northern Europe.

So, possibly the word is very very ancient, with origins in Indo-European, or, it developed independently in multiple languages. It came to English through Germanic languages, and to Russian through Latin/Greek.

In other news, here is one of my favorite paintings that I saw in the Tretyakov gallery in Moscow:

Побеждённые. Панихида.

1878-1879. Oil on canvas.

If you don’t see it right at first (I didn’t, even standing in front of the painting, which is very large, maybe 4 ft tall and 8 or 9 feet wide), here:

If you don’t live under a rock, like I do, you’ve probably already heard of the Mumble Grumble. Basically, it’s a pack of six games for Android 4, Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, for which you can pay anything you like (although they do tell you the average price of the whole thing is “around $119″). If you’re rich enough to pay at least one dollar, you get “a Steam key* in addition to DRM-free direct downloads.” Notice the asterisk. Go over there to read more, I’m busy telling the news.

The games are Splice, Eufloria, Waking Mars, Machinarium, Crayon Physics Deluxe, and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP, of which the first I intend to play soon. Machinarium can only be unlocked if you pay more than the current average of around six bucks. Clever girl.

What I find interesting in this deal isn’t that we’re supporting charity and developers, but that we actually control how much of the money goes to what.

I shit you not.

Again, it might be because of my secluded nature (I’m typing from atop a sequoia right now, somewhere in the woods, and I’m almost out of Maltesers), but I find this to be new and interesting. I mean, wouldn’t it be grand if you could decide how much of the money you spend on groceries would actually go to the bloke who grew the damn lettuce in the first place? Before you accuse me of Marxist undertones, what I mean is that I find it healthy when versatile choices are allowed in what concerns money. In a time where a lot of us see our pockets being emptied by attempts to correct decades of economical mismanagement, which isn’t even our fault to begin with, this is refreshing and comfortable. To each his own decision, no questions asked.

If you think a lot of charity today never actually reaches its ultimate target, make that slice 0%. If you think none of this would have existed without the developers and everything else is a bloody parasite, make that slice 100%. If you hate tipping, give that slice 0%. The choice is yours, and unless my calculations are incorrect, you have 2.799786e+158 choices available. This amount of possibility dwarfs Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, and possibly even Noctis IV. Oompa Loompa is, therefore, the ultimate infinite game. Fuck storylines, graphics, and soundtracks. Look at the sleek GUI! Minimalism at its best.

Seriously, though, be nice, so evil bastards don’t have to.

The best deal in gaming is back with its fourth Android-focused offering.

The Humble Bundle for Android 4 features five indie games for whatever price you choose to pay and a sixth if you pay more than the average, which presently hovers around $5.85. This bundle includes microbial puzzler Splice, real-time sci-fi strategy title Eufloria, “action gardening” sim Waking Mars, physics-based puzzle game Crayon Physics Deluxe, and point-and-click adventurer Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP. The beat-the-average game is robotic adventure game Machinarium.

All of these are compatible with Android, but you’ll also get PC, Mac, and Linux versions.

As usual, all of the money is split between the developers, charity, and the Humble Bundle organizers. As with previous promotions in this series, the charities are Child’s Play, which provides toys to sick kids, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which lobbies on behalf of technology.

The Humble Bundle for Android 4 is special because each game (except for Machinarium) is making its debut on the Google mobile operating system. In the case of Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, this is a game that the developer said it would probably never release on Android.

So, if you have a Galaxy S III, an HTC One X, or whatever, then you should probably go give your money to Humble Bundle, since it’s doing a better job of getting games on Android than Google is.

…A friend of mine shows up at my place of work with a look of worry in her eyes. I was under the impression that she had gone to Costa Rica for the week, but apparently something went wrong, and she found herself back in town a little earlier than planned. She convinces me to take an early smoke break, and we head out back to talk. I had let her borrow my car to get to the airport, but as I view its current condition, I realize that she had nearly totaled it before even arriving. She wants to go for a ride, and for some strange reason, I agree, letting her take the wheel. On the road, I give her directions, but she has some serious difficulty understanding them. “Left!” I yell, but she turns around. “No! Straight!” I continue, but before I know it, we’re lost and she has already changed the subject. “Don’t I look great?” she asks, posing while steering our off-course vessel. “No, not really.” I reply with a touch of concern. She looks horribly thin and sick; nothing like I remember her before she left for her short-lived trip. In fact, she hardly looked herself, possessing something odd within her very core. Shifting topics again, she returns with, “Oh, you can crash at my place tonight. It’s at least a couch and my girlfriend’s not home…she’s in the hospital from the crash…”Don’t ask me why, but I decide to stay…

…I now find myself in a dingy, old cellar. No light was on, but there was a particular glow about the room. It was if a scaled-down moon lit the stage from the back right-corner baseboard. Looking around, I notice a single sink on the wall to my right, with a mirror hanging just above it. I walk over to it, grab my toothbrush and start bushing my teeth, yet a terrifying feeling quickly creeps under my skin. I suddenly lose hold of the toothbrush, as something else is now brushing my teeth for me. I glare into the mirror, overwhelmed with both fear and amazement, as some sort of entity is attempting to consume my mind. I watch my face begin to glitch in and out of focus, as I wrestle with the “demon”, doing all that I’m able to avert the splice. The battle grows too close to call, so with a touch of concentration and extreme trepidation, I decide it’d be best to wake up…

…It’s 3:30 am…

Sheridan, Annie Smith Arts Centre Mezzanine
Joyce Cutler-Shaw works in a range of media including drawings, installations, public commissions and artist’s books. Drawing is Cutler-Shaw’s primary language, and this has several manifestations including two-dimensional pen and ink works on paper as well as their sculptural translations and original calligraphies, such as her award winning and widely published book and wall texts Alphabet of Bones. Since 1992, Cutler-Shaw has explored the human life cycle in an ongoing work titled The Anatomy Lesson. This evolving project investigates the physical self, and new technologies for its visualization. As the first visual artist to be appointed Artist-In-Residence as a Visiting Scholar at the School of Medicine of the University of California San Diego (1992-present) — and the first nationally in such a role — she has been pursuing this independent investigation of the human body in a medical school setting. Drawing is at the heart of this work, as a way of knowing, as a mode of inquiry, as an act of empathy.
Cutler-Shaw believes that how we see, represent and interpret the body, reveals the way we see and understand ourselves. To this end, she has been investigating and documenting the history of anatomy at medical/anatomical museums and libraries internationally including Europe, China and Japan. She has exhibited internationally since 1972 with her works represented in both museum and library special collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Center for Photography and the Moving Image in New York, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the Wellcome Institute and the Tate Library in London, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution Library in Washington, D.C. and in California the Getty Library and Special Collections of the University of California Los Angeles and San Diego among others.

Written by Greg B

Elvis (Erlend Nervold) and Leo (Jon Sigve Skard) are two clean-up guys. Not the kind of cleaners who scrub toilets or wipe windows for a living, but the cats that have to use a pair of long nose pliers to yank some guys teeth out of the ceiling after the poor bastard blows his brains out with a shotgun. When the guys take a jaunt out into the woods for what initially seems to be a bog standard clean-up-the-bloody-puddle-that-used-to-be-a-man-job they find more than they bargained for. While exploring the shed, Elvis stumbles across a set of steps that lead to a room that looks like something between a makeshift lab and a torture chamber. After Leo tells Elvis not to touch anything in the room, Elvis goes ahead and presses play on a tape recorder, and before you can shout ‘deadite!’ a creepy old voice begins emanating from the recorder, speaking messages that seem to be for a child of some kind. Soon after, a naked woman (Silje Reinamo) violently erupts from a bath tub in the room. She displays feral behaviour to begin with, but after the duo feed and clothe her she becomes more sedate. Who is this broad? Is she human? And who are the lanky, hairy black mutants from the woods that are circling the cottage?

(‘Forensic clean-up’ Not the most glamorous of professions it seems..)

There isn’t much too Thale and I found it to be quite a perplexing movie. On the one hand, the plot feels like it would have been better suited to a short film format and the appearance of some gun-toting government meanies seemed kinda redundant in terms of plot development. Whereas, on the other hand, the film crams in a lot of set pieces in order to bolster its running time. I mean slow motion murder sequences are great for the DP’s showreel and all but they aren’t that scary after you’ve seen five or six of them in about two minutes. Also we learn that Elvis and Leo have been friends since childhood, but havent been that close of late. Elvis is the clumsy novice who can’t stop puking at work and perpetually denies reality by cancelling calls from his estranged girlfriend, while Leo is the no-bullshit, hardworking, tough guy. Early in the flick we learn that Elvis has a five year old daughter that he never bothered to tell Leo about.

This lets the audience know that Elvis and Leo’s relationship hasn’t been the healthiest of late which is fine and dandy. It’s just that this little narrative seed doesn’t grow into anything, we don’t learn any further important info about the buddies except that Leo has a potentially terminal illness that he didn’t bother telling Elvis about. Basically this revelation has little or no impact, as the audience simply hasn’t been given enough reasons to care. And so hearing Elvis shout in terror for his buddy while the military have them both hooded and tied to chairs in the forest, with Elvis being interrogated by a jaded scientist who brandishes a gun, wasn’t heart wrenching or upsetting, it was just a part of another boring, functional set piece.

(Now what would Freud make of that one?)

The creepy tape recordings of the weird old man are effectively sinister, especially the first one we hear during the film’s cold open. But the dodgy flashbacks that show us Thale and the arm of her flannel shirt wearing foster dad removes any sense of mystery that existed in previous plays of the crackly cassette recordings. Thale is also a confusing character. We learn that her carer /foster dad /Kidnapper snipped her tail and shoved it into a freezer so she could be controlled and wouldn’t be too attracted to the skinny creatures who prowl around the backwoods. When the fellas first release her from her milky bath, she is scared (sure she chokes Elvis but Leo coaxes her off him without too much difficulty) and meek, like a lost kid. However when the military boot boys make their entrance she metamorphoses into a naked badass. We are told to be wary of her peachy exterior and that it is merely a cover for some uber dangerous mythological powers. This peaks expectations, but when she finally lets loose and lashes out it’s as predictable as Splice and frankly not scary in the least.

After a genuinely spooky and promising first act, Thale veers off course and starts to fragment all over the place. In fact it ends up being quite a sentimental, gloopy film about the power of friendship and how it’s never too late to fix broken ties in some form or another. Now while this may be accused of stinking of cheese to the highest degree, I think that there is nothing inherently wrong with a happy ending in a horror flick. It’s just that Thale’s narrative is a bit of a mess, in that the film relishes in its earlier scenes of gory violence and tacking a downright corny, high-key ending onto what is supposed to be a tense, scare filled chiller, just seems incongruous.

(Oh dear, it even looks like the scourge of meth has reached rural Norway..)

This movie starts with a lot of brooding menace and narrative potential, but within twenty minutes you feel like you know exactly where the plot is headed (and I ain’t even versed in Norse mythology or nuthin’), and overall I thought this was a wasted opportunity to spin what could have been a nifty little horror tale. I mean this isn’t to say that Thale doesn’t look and sound great. Aleksander Nordaas shoots, edits and directs and does a fantastic job (at least in the first two capacities). The cramped cabin and forest setting effectively adds to the feeling that the characters are truly in the middle of nowhere and therefore very vulnerable. The art direction (by Alen Grujic) is also worthy of a nod, as one can almost smell the rotting food and feel the sticky surfaces within Thales hideous living quarters. However the high quality of the technical aspects of the film are not enough to save it from being ultimately, kinda forgettable.

(Actor’s motivation for the bulk of this flick: stare apathetically at the gross thing)

Shauncastic 110

Week 2 of the Long Halloween is up and running! So you know how I said that I wouldn’t be participating in this event in the show proper because I spent the better part of my younger years being a pansy? After saying that, my brain started a list of scary-ish movies that I’ve seen. While still small compared to most of you freakazoids (I say that with love), it’s a respectable size long enough from which to pick and choose. I want to share with you my list of other movies I didn’t get a chance to talk about because I think they’re also worthy enough for a Halloween sit-down. Now, I accidentally deleted my original list but was able to recall most of it:

Candyman (Tony Todd is a sweet man, but he still scares the crap out of me because of this movie)

Arachnophobia (two words: John Goodman)

The Witches (Angelica Houston is devilishly superb)

Death Becomes Her (Bruce Willis, Meryl Streep, and Goldie Hawn are hilarious)

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (admittedly, I remember the cartoon better than I remember this movie)

Slither (Capt. Tightpants is in it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have watched it)

Mimic (It’s bad, I know. But big ass cockroaches taking human form to eat your face? No thank you.)

Let the Right One In/Let Me In (either movie is great. ‘Let Me In’ tends to be more violent than its foreign predecessor)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie)

Bubba Ho-Tep (It’s got Bruce Campbell. The End)

Splice (It’s more freakishly messed up than scary)

Thirst (from the director of ‘Oldboy’)

Dead Snow (Nazi Zombies. Need I say more?)

Pan’s Labyrinth (If fairy tales were told in their original grim format…and in Spanish)

The Orphanage (Ghost kids. Creepy)

Devil’s Backbone (Again…ghost kid. Still creepy)

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil (The name alone should get you to watch this)

And this week in Intro to Geek, I take a look at one of sci-fi’s classics, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. There isn’t much more to say about how much I have come to appreciate this movie — especially now after I’m slightly more versed in the science fiction, space exploration category, and in the explanation you’ll hear in the podcast. All those Khan references make sense to me, even ones I didn’t KNOW were from the movie (“Can I cook, or can’t I?” comes to mind). If you’ve seen J.J. Abram’s Star Trek, the Kobayashi Maru test scene is merely the window of how awesome and tricksy Kirk becomes as he gets older.

And let’s not forget the unforgettable scene even non-Trekkers know about: Spock’s heart-wrenching death scene. I teared up a little as I watched his scene in its entirety for the first time ever.

This is a definite must-see for anyone who loves movies in general. Star Trek has a way of bringing home the classics in literature and ideas. In this case, we see and hear throwbacks to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.

The Best Scary Movies You Haven’t Seen Lately: 24:45

Unfortunately there is no Spears and Crumpets this week due to Ms. Jenna Busch workin’ the New York Comic Con last weekend like a boss. But! Here’s some nice filler for you until next week:

Note!!!
I mentioned THE UNKNOWN at the end of the podcast. It truly is messed up, freakishly good miniseries. It stars Dominic Monaghan as a blogger trying to get behind some mysterious, supernatural occurrences happening all over the country. It’s a great little anthology series brought to you by Crackle.com and the producers of SONS OF ANARCHY and CLONES WARS. It’s no longer available on the website, nor can I play an episode on Crackle’s YouTube channel. It is, however, available at a Red Box near you! So get out there and rent it! WARNING: Not for the faint of heart.
